I must be living under a rock, but I didn't realise that youtube-dl is back.
In the meantime, yt-dlp has been developed, and has really cool features (like using SponsorBlock's API to tag/remove shilling sections).
How does youtube-dl compare? Does it still make sense for both projects to exist?

Who knows who cares? All that matters is you can -f 22 -k all of OriginalName's videos for unyielding preservation

Youtube-dl was back for awhile now after the government declared the program the modern day equivalent of recording a TV show to a VHS tape.

This is the most recent update I could find. Are there more recent articles?

Which government?

youtube-dl went back up in November 2020, literally less than a month after it was taken down. So yeah, you've absolutely been living under a rock.

>Which government?
None, as far as I can tell (although it was American law that was involved in the first place). Github put the repo back up after the EFF sent them a letter explaining that the RIAA's DMCA notice was unfounded, but I can't find any article about this ever actually being taken to court.

Yeah, this DMCA takedown was extremely retarded. Youtube has no DRM protection. By same logic, web browsers should be took down as well, because they also download Youtube videos, although not to hard drive.

i have been using it to download stuff ever since yt-dl kicked the bucket in the arch repos.
it can grab on other sites with video and potentially on some unsupported sites as well. some sites that save video in a blob or file still don't work though.

every dmca takedown is retarded. the dmca only serves giant corporations who want to rule the world to the detriment of everyone else.
the riaa's "evidence" in this takedown was that some of youtube-dl's unit tests were of copyrighted riaa songs. youtube-dl's unit tests are a video url, the title and upload date, and an md5sum of the file that would be downloaded. even after the eff told the riaa to kill themselves and that unit tests are not copyright infringement, youtube-dl still removed those unit tests. this is the dmca in action: refrain from doing something you are legally allowed to for fear of being bullied into submission by (insert huge company)'s swarm of lawyers. this is why youtube-dl doesn't extract piracy websites, youtubers are paranoid of music, redump.org hides away dumps of recent consoles, rpcs3 bans you from their forums if you didn't dump your games yourself, and probably a whole universe of other things idk about. one of the worst unintentionally international laws ever.
