simplest way to make a blog

Hacker · 2022-05-20 22:42
title. i'm attempting to create a simple personal webpage on neocities, and i'm not sure if, for the blog, i should just create separate .html files for each post or use a static website generator and feed it some .md files. i'm also looking to implement rss to the blog, but i'll look into it after i establish the blog first

its been a while since I used neocities but it does automatic index pages, right ? dumbest, simplest way would be to make a /blog with an automatic index page, and a list of text or html files held therein.

>>60099 Static site generators are the way to go. No need to use their templates, you can make your own minimalistic one. But it takes care of all the structure, tagging, and RSS feed for you.

>>60099 Use NeoCities. Also the webring thread.

>>60120 have you read my post? i'm already using neocities. i was asking specifically about how the blog should be structured

>>60099 For a blog a SSG is the easiest way to go, try finding a simple one or with sane defaults, if you don't care much about the style you could use the defaults on something like 11ty or Hugo

>>60121 >how the blog should be structured Create a blog.html that has links to blog entries inside an unordered list (add new entries at the head of the list). Call each blog entry like "blog-entry-$(date --rfc-3339=date)" You could also use GNU M4 to #include common HTML code (like header, etc). For info on M4: http://www.cs.stir.ac.uk/~kjt/research/pdf/expl-m4.pdf & https://mbreen.com/m4.html

>>60131 >Call each blog entry like "blog-entry-$(date --rfc-3339=date)" Or "blog-entry-$(date --rfc-3339=date)-$number" if you want to have multiple entries per day.

I personally write my pages in orgmode then use org-publish to turn them into HTML Good thing is that I have an index.org file where I add the links and org-publish has this neat functionality than republishes into HTML every org file that was changed, so executing (org-publish-current-project) does the needful and I only have to use magit to merge the edits

>>60099 >create separate .html files for each post Use a new HTML file for each month. You can put multiple articles on the same page and add a table of contents to the top. Navigation links using id/href will take care of the rest.

A static site generator is my vote. Hugo is easy enough. Bashblog is also good, very simple, and responsible for most of the blogs in the tildeverse. Both automatically handle RSS for you.
