What is some old technology you use on a daily basis?
Hagbard Celine · 2022-05-19 17:36
Basically anything that most people would consider "obsolete". If it isn't broke, don't fix it.
For example, I've been using my BlackBerry Z10 as my main phone since it launched back in 2013. It still works even past the BB10 service shutdown date, but I'll likely have to upgrade soon as 3G on my carrier is being shut down in July and while it does have 4G, it doesn't work with "modern" 4G (if that makes sense).

Stove kettle, because I want to use more things that don't require electricity.

i dailydrive a laptop from 2007. it's so bad that a thinkpad x200 has better specs in general than this, but, you know, i don't need more. obviously i'm running linux on it.
i wouldn't consider my phone obsolete in terms of release date (~5 years old, i think?), but it is pretty soykafty. 1.5GB of ram, i think, but it's still running strong.

Lol I totally forgot electric kettles are a thing.
I'm keeping an old CRT TV for retro gaming. replaying metroid prime on the gamecube and it's great. I bought an HDMI adapter for my Wii, but nothing beats a big TV with obnoxious half-broken speakers and a tiny flawless screen.
For some godly reason my TV as a headphone that I can use (????) so I hook up my headphones to replace the speakers. the on/off button also acts like the up volume button and works 50/50.

been using a lot of knives lately where I used to use scissors. Cutting paper and cloth. Knives are obviously not obsolete but I see them used surprisingly rarely for this type of application, considering how easy and natural it is.

A laptop
Mozilla Firefox
yes these are obsolete

A biological brain. I'm just a hipster like that. I keep my 5G brain implant off and access the internet through a screen

Not a good way to be. For security reasons, you should always upgrade your devices once they reach EOL. EOL is necessary to ensure customers get the latest security since older phones no longer have firmware updates, lack the security features found in newer phones such as the Titan M chip, and are obsolete.
I do use Tor Browser which is based on Mozilla Firefox, which was made obsolete by Google Chrome a decade ago. For security reasons, using Google Chrome is preferable, but since Tor Browser is based on Firefox and using Tor Browser is required to safely access the Tor network, I use Firefox.
Older hardware is unreliable and less secure than the latest hardware. Right to repair is harmful for the safety and security of people. We need to continue disposing of old technology, replacing it when it becomes obsolete, to ensure that we have a reasonable amount of security. For your safety, you should replace your BlackBerry Z10 with a Google Pixel 6 Pro, or you can wait until the Google Pixel 7 comes out.

I know you're trolling, but not even madaidan or Daniel Micay have voiced opposition to it. Granted, they haven't voiced support either, but this has to be the lowest effort bait I have ever seen.

They wage slave newest Google Pixels which have EOL. Of course they're against product longevity.

I use a x220 daily, I basically use it as a Chromebook that can play minecraft java/1.6, and for teamviewer

Time for a data collection thread I guess.
>Laptop
I use a desktop at home. But when I travel and need a computer I take my x230. The x230 came out in 2012. Using lightweight software makes the laptop snappier than expensive modern laptops trying to accomplish the same thing.
>Phone
I still use a WileyFox Swift from 2015. The company no longer exists. They used CyanogenMod instead of stock Android. CyanogenMod was forked to become the well known LineageOS. The phone is starting to really show it's age. I've degoogled best I can but because the OS isn't getting updates there's compatibility and security issues. I've tried to make it as lightweight as possible but it still hangs some time. I will likely get a new phone in the next year and put GrapheneOS onto it. Hopefully it'll last me till 2032.
>MP3 player
MP3 players are of course considered obsolete apart from maybe a niche group of audiophiles. I'm not much of a phone user so I bought a SanDisk Sansa Clip+ last year for a really great price. I put rockbox onto it and it's such a comfy experience. As it's a single purpose device the battery lasts for so long.
>Earphones
Apple EarPods came out in 2012 and with how many AirPods I see around, I could see people considering EarPods obsolete. Apple apparently makes good hardware (I haven't really used any of their main line devices) and these earphones seem to be working really well. I mainly choose these because of the shape. All the other earphones I've tried that have various soft buds don't feel nice in my ears.
>Watch
This is probably the least obsolete one here. I use the ever so popular Casio F-91W. Not much to say about this one. It's likely some of you here use one.

i'll still be using an x220 in 2040. i don't feel at home anywhere else.

(you are anyone who has looked into it) any smartphone model/company recommendations? I'd like to get away from smartphones and possibly not have a phone number of any account requiring mobile authentication, but every year, the prospects seem to be getting more fiddly
