What have you implemented in your internet browsing habits that made it comfy? I'll start. Ad-blocking Goes without saying. Just install uBlock Origin on your browser. RSS feed reader I no longer subscribe to anything. You can get RSS feeds for most things, they are just buried beneath the surface. You can get them for regular blogs, for YouTube (inspect the source of the page), for Twitter (use nitter instead), etc. I use newsboat, but any RSS reader will do. Youtube Install an extension called SponsorBlock. It's not that well known, but basically it automatically skips the wage slave sections of videos. I haven't heard about VPN providers in ages. Also, I watch a lot of videos at 2x speed, just get to the point!

uBlock Origin Custom DNS level ad and tracker blocking via NextDNS over HTTPS (better than just uBlock, because it reduces outbound connections considerably and generally speeds up web browsing) SponsorBlock addon to block self-promotion, intros, and paid segments in YouTube videos DarkReader addon for dark mode everywhere Some GreaseMonkey scripts for specific sites, like DesuDesuTalk for Lainchan.

The Great Suspender to reduce RAM usage. Privacy Redirect extension to manage eight different redirects. KeePassXC integration. AutoControl for keyboard shortcuts. A custom new tab page for non-RSS sites, browsable with arrow keys, and 24k random backgrounds. All served in bed with an articulated monitor mount and game controller.

(Somewhat) easy way to find movies streaming links on google: -Search for the title of the movie + "streaming" on google -Go straight at the bottom of the first page -Click on the lumendatabase.org link to see the complaint -Search for your movie on the page (Ctrl + F) -Watch the "Allegedly Infringing URLs:" section -Chose a website on the list, visit it. -Search for your film on the website -??? -PROFIT This way you don't waste your time clicking on random search results and end up on fake streaming sites. If the copyright holder took time to send a complaint about the website to google, it most likely mean the website is really hosting a pirated version of the movie watchable in streaming :) Sometimes the links in the complaint are censored sadly, but most of the time they are not. I know, google, *boooo*, but hey, at least it's really quick

>>59554 Why are you suggesting streaming
The Phantom Phreak · 2022-05-04 07:08
>>59555 What do you mean? Like, why I suggest streaming over downloading ? Because it's easier when you're not a home and don't have access to your own computer. Let's say you are at your weed dealer home. The guy is weird but he has good weed. When he sees you, his face light up and he wants to talk about everything like you're his friend. You know he's lonely, so after buying your weed you ask him if you can roll one here and smoke it with him. So 2 hours later you're still at your dealer house and you're eating pizzarolls and you REALLY want to watch the movie Speed. You don't have your computer, your dealer is a bit scared about "tech stuff" and don't want to to download anything because "THE FBI WILL KICK MY DOOR DUDE". So you suggest watching it on streaming. Your dealer have a confused look on his face so you say "Like, you know, like watching it on youtube dude" and he agrees. Does it make sense now?

What has helped a lot is to create multiple 'profiles' in Firefox and then to load the appropriate Firefox browser based on what I want to do. It sounds complicated but creating a 'profile' is just creating an empty folder, it does the rest for you. When I want to open firefox with a certain profile I type in the terminal: /path/to/firefox/firefox -profile "/path/to/profile/profilename.default" I have those commands saved as text so I can run them easily, they are also saved in the terminal memory so often I just use up arrow and enter. This sounds overcomplicated but it saves me a lot of effort. What it lets me do is basically manage multiple online accounts, without anything 'overlapping' with each other. On one I can log into social media, on another I can always keep cookies and history disabled, on another I can also use the same social media sites as the first but on a completely different account. I can also open multiple instances of the browser simultaneously to be logged into multiple accounts at the same time. Where I am logged in I never log out. That way I don't have to log out and log in to another account to check something, and then log out and again and log in back to the first account. They all stay logged in. For general browsing I have another 'profile', so that means that my general browsing is never tracked and connected to my social media accounts, because cookies are separate and it is considered a separate browser in a separate instance. Since I discovered this it would be hard to go back, I strongly advise it. It's not just about simplicity and saving time with multiple accounts, but also about not being locked out of accounts. Try to log out of and log in to accounts too many times and they will start locking you out. Or you will get flagged somewhere somehow and won't be able to log in to some public facing service. Keep all of your accounts separate like this and the websites don't know where you are going or what you are doing, all they care about is that you still have the cookies saved from the last time you logged in and you look like a reliable and safe user.
The Phantom Phreak · 2022-05-07 07:32
>>59665 That's pretty cool, lainon. I would recommend Firefox Multi-Account Containers (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/multi-account-containers/) if you just want to keep logged in multiple accounts on same profile. It doesn't address the "having a profile with cookies and history disabled", so profiles are still the best option for that. You can also just do firefox -P <just profile name without full path and angle brackets> . Firefox even has tab completion for profiles.

>>59665 >>59669 It's possible to do something similar on qutebrowser with --basedir, --temp-basedir and --config-py and qute-pass for accounts. Distinguish between profiles with different colored title bars or something.
Yamaoto Toshi · 2022-05-12 07:38
>>59669 Thanks, good points. >>59670 For me it's easier using profiles because I can name them after what I use them for, and there's a limit on how many browsers you install versus creating as many profiles as you want. I was originally going to try to just have a bunch of instances of one browser saved in portable mode multiple times (or as AppImages) but this works too. On getting locked out, what I mean is if you open up your social media website of choice and start logging into a bunch of accounts one after another, some sites track that and might lock you out for it.
Bob Arctor · 2022-05-12 08:38
>>59665 This is a great tip but the only flaw with this is global passive adversarial tracking cannot be avoided. Using separate profiles with separate social/personal accounts may prevent inter-sharing of botnet that abuse DOM cache for tracking (currently not talked about) or other nefarious cache/supercookie variant but does not prevent them altogether from building up a profile based around that IP and the time correlation. Even the GPU and display size alone is enough to uniquely identify you considering you have gl graphics enabled in browser. My suggestion is using VPN or proxy of sorts atop the profiles that you don't want to link to your IP (although this is a complete joke since your ISP, and the devices/browsers/dns/apps all want to track you either way and have the tools/botnet preinstalled to do so). These are futile either way due to fingerprinting techniques which are the very reason you get "flag/lock" you out when you use many accounts or have the same pattern/speed as ones that already got derezzed/detected by automated systems. It's usually -P "profilename" and you can create a *.desktop file or a shortcut file to open them with ease. Make sure to put them in profile.ini and have a different "profilename" of the random.profilename folders >>59669 Containers are organized but futile and is a solution presented only to enable further tracking. Containers afaik don't have its own add-ons. Different profiles can have different add-ons, you can even run a profile without any privacy enhancement, but beware of the DOM cache and other sorts of problems, you sometimes have to manually delete them, it's being abused currently. >>59488 There are a bunch of lainons who probably removed microphones of smartphones but protip: there's about up to 3 microphones on your phone. Some phones even reach up to 5 or 6+ ll try to list them (ascending, more common): Main Mic (this could be stereo too!) Camcorder Mic Voice recognition (Assistant) Mic Noise cancellation Mic (loudspeaker and 'phone' speaker) Far-Field Mic (used for snooping on your bedroom while phone is at the living room, along with Near-Field on some, for near signal-noise cancellation etc.) NuHF Mic (used for Audio Content Recognition and more, long range botnet communication).

>>59522 Late to the party but I'll never know the entire post but >Adblocking, avoid them, they don't add any privacy This is somewhat true, privacy abusers are the companies themselves, adblocking does not prevent the ISP or ISP's partners/shareholders (think big tech ;^) ), non RYF-FSF devices (with botnet APIs and telemetry), from abusing your privacy. Heck they can even access your SMS via apps but they will argue "it's so the apps could fetch the SMS verification code for people of old age" but they clearly have unlimited access over your personal notifications/messages enough that it's used to track/personalize your "preferences". There's no one-button switch for privacy, it encompasses multiple companies and service providers, and devices which have anti-privacy by default. using adblock on the latest android device is absurd. >extensions have privileged access and require you to trust the developer This is a great reminder but most extensions or add-ons don't have source available >Only use the official YT website This is only a good idea in combination with a VPN, since using a non-official API like invidious violates TOS therefore they can be obliged to track you even more, also, invidious does not turn on proxy by default. >I do not use Invidious because I'd have to trust both Google and some stranger on the internet, and they might track me more than Google does. This is bait but it's probably true, I've seen shady instances, mostly Indian dataminers. Same people who have made "lineage" ports with datamining I guess (actually it's much easier to larp as one for scapegoat). >If you want to avoid sharing information to Google, use a VPN. This is true considering IP-linked profile is what makes your privacy and activity vulnerable the most aside from directly using products they've developed or devices with their products (assuming you use a trustable VPN provider or better a remote residential host).

There are also numerous other ways in which you can reduce your reliance on bloated web browsers, such as playing videos with mpv/yt-dlp and ytfzf, and streaming anime with ani-cli.

Any recommendation for a firefox extension to block websites? the one i was using just doesn't work anymore, i need the extension to: > block redirections to blacklisted website, while not taking me to some other site for example, i go to google.com i want the webpage not to load instead of redirecting me to a "hey, you know you're not supposed to be here" html page. > import/export blacklist feature

>>59488 I do the same thing with RSS for YouTube but I use sfeed with dmenu instead of newsboat now. #!/bin/sh channel=$(sfeed_plain "$HOME/.sfeed/feeds/"* | sed 's/^[ \t]*//' | awk -F ' {1,} ' '{print $2}' | uniq | dmenu -l 10 -i) url=$(sfeed_plain "$HOME/.sfeed/feeds/$channel" | dmenu -l 10 -i | \ sed -n 's@^.* \([a-zA-Z]*://\)\(.*\)$@\1\2@p') test -n "${url}" && mpv "${url}" Simply gets a list of all the channels I have feeds for, select a channel, it gives you a list of the latest videos, and then select a video to play in mpv.

>>59897 the problem was usually you'd have automatic cookie cleaner add ons on your browser that you want some privacy with. using profiles solves the problem that makes your cookies get removed, and logging in multiple times a day can make them think you're botting. using a browser profile where you don't need to remove anything/cookies (since the profile is exclusively for botnet service) makes it easier, also it means you don't need to install privacy add ons which makes these botnet services shadowban you for running a measly adblocker (which they try to detect in their JS). even running canvas randomizer/poisondata these days makes these botnet/bigtech think you're botting and trigger anti-fraud systems or captchalock you on your IP or account since the fraudsters also use the canvas randomizer or other privacy stuff (and probably neural net/ml learned thinks you're also one false positive due to similar patterns).

I use Google Chrome on all devices. I stay away from Firefox and browsers based on it because Firefox is not secure. I stay away from forks of Chrome too since they will always be behind upstream Chrome days each release and some of them, notably Ungoogled Chromium, do not automatically update. I avoid lesser-known browsers like Pale Moon and Qutebrowser because the developers are unknown, little security research is being done on those browsers, and by using them, I will have a unique fingerprint. You cannot have privacy or security using those browsers. Use Google Chrome (or Tor Browser if your threat model requires anonymity and you understand the risks of using Firefox-based browsers) and nothing else. I value my privacy, so I disable all telemetry in the settings. I've turned off everything under privacy/security, including "protect you and your device from dangerous sites". While I believe Google Safebrowsing is an important security feature, it also reports back the websites I visit. I also block third-party cookies and block most web permissions including location. Most of the time I browse in incognito mode to prevent Chrome from storing my history. I do not use a VPN because my threat model does not require one, but if I wanted to prevent IP-based tracking, I would use a reputable VPN such as ProtonVPN, Mullvad, or IVPN. I do not use any browser extensions for a number of reasons: they increase attack surface, have privileged access within my browser, require me to trust the developers of extensions, weaken site isolation, and make my fingerprint unique. I don't believe uBlock Origin adds any real privacy but worsens it because by blocking some trackers and allowing others, I am standing out thus reducing privacy. I do not disable JavaScript since it does not prevent fingerprinting but might worsen it since most people do not disable it, and most websites will not load without it. You might be secure in however you describe security to be but you are still Googles $5 little whore. >I do not use a VPN because my threat model does not require one If your entire privacy solution is to try and "blend in" then I doubt you ever had any real threat model to begin with.

DOS Box for those DOS games, but I figure you are using that already. And I'm sure many emulators have Linux builds. Personally I need to get around to learning modern Wine techniques since I'm still stuck in the Winetricks age. I've good things heard about Bottles.

>>59584 >>60168 Allowing outdated (really, it's same as revoked) certificates defeats the whole purpose of HTTPS. You could be using plain HTTP or Telnet instead. Solution: Install GNU/Linux, like Xubuntu. If you are unsure whether everything will work, you can use windoze disk management tools to shrink windows partition and then install GNU/Linux on the newly reclaimed space and dual-boot windoze and GNU/Linux. You can also boot SystemRescueCD and use gparted to shrink the windows partition (login as root and type startx to get GUI) I think using Windoze tools is better, but I have used gparted in the past and it has always worked without any issues) >https://xubuntu.org/download/ >https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-server/storage/disk-management/shrink-a-basic-volume or https://www.system-rescue.org/ Use Rufus (https://rufus.ie/en/) to create a bootable LiveUSB that can be used to test and install Xubuntu. You can use Xubuntu LiveUSB system to check whether everything works before installing anything on disk. Installing/using Xubuntu is easy, and you have nothing to lose, if you test Xubuntu. Nowadays Wine and Steam+Proton work. And, on Xubuntu, you will get security updates and fresh software.

I feel most comfy when I see that the advertisers and recommendation algorithms of the botnet just cannot seem to grasp my interests. They can only push me towards normal person soykaf and... chinese soap opera action scenes? I've just used the browsing tips from here: https://cyberpunked.org/ sadly don't have a VPN yet, can't afford one. So I mostly use Tor and am avoiding torrenting til I can afford Mullvad.
Netrunner · 2022-05-23 19:31
>>60171 tor is a lot more secure than any vpn. You shouldn't stop using it, even though mullvad is one of the only vpns worth paying for, it's still a direct connection with someone else computer. For torrenting it's ok but it's worth getting into a private tracker.
Hiro Protagonist · 2022-05-23 19:56
>>60177 Just learning about what a private tracker is. I'll look into getting one through my own research. Thanks for the tip in the right direction lain. I think I'll still get Mullvad, there are some things VPNs are useful for outside torrenting. Plus it is at a good deal.

>>60192 Your hardware has identifiers specifically made to be unique that browsers can read out. Any "just use popular software" approach will never work since they aren't stupid and solved the problem long ago already. Secondary what you can actually do is spoof browser data which means browser extensions let you lie and pretend you run chrome on win even if you use palemoon or whatever on linux. The best solution overall would be if people agreed on one data set and everyone spoofed with same data.
