eink devices for pdfs

The Oracle · 2022-04-21 21:30
I've been scouting over the week whats on market and it seems almost nobody even talks about using epaper for reading pdfs. All the reviews are for scribbling and maybe manga reading. Do people simply not care because everyone sits at home anyway? Seems strange that there is no community around using eink for working with pdfs in the college and work setting. Should be much nicer on the eyes and everyone has a lot of pdfs to read through. Whats even more striking is the few devices you can find that seem targeted at professional use aren't even internationally sold. Whats your opinion on the whole topic? Also zero interest?
Jens Hansen · 2022-04-21 23:10
It's not used for PDFs, because it's a pain the ass. E-readers are only convenient for text you go through linearly(in my experience with a kindle oasis).
Tank · 2022-04-21 23:32
>>59132 Use KOReader and you'll be able to read PDFs just fine. Kobo and Amazon want you to buy their proprietary DRM-infested e-books from their stores, not sideload PDFs. The quality of the reading experience in the factory software reflects this. It might be hard to patch your Oasis to use KOReader if you have been keeping up with firmware upgrades. Remember this when it's time to buy another e-reader in the future. >>59131 > Whats your opinion on the whole topic? Also zero interest? It does seem like a niche that should be way larger. I like the idea of coding on an e-ink monitor, because the long hours staring at an LCD are starting to take a toll on my eyes.

I have a kobo ereader. Not too big and a bit old at this point, I don't keep an eye on the market very much. Performance on PDFs varies a lot. PDFs have fixed page sizes, and my reader's screen is pretty small, about 5" x 3.5", so on large page sizes with small text, this is a great pain to read. I've tried to read big paged textbook style books and its just not worth the trouble. This is partially that the controls for zooming in and navigating a zoom'd in page are clonky and inefficient. Kinda difficult on a device with a slowly updated display, not the best touch sensitivity, and a single button. Rendering images that aren't well made for it is also just bad, especially scanns that are often not great to begin with. This goes for maps, too, as well as graphs. Graphs and maps often also use hue to differentiate features, and you're not in luck on a screen like this. Now I know what colorblindness feels like. Scanned books are pretty hit or miss in general. If there's a lot of noise or garbage in a page its pretty easy for a document to be made pretty unreadible. Overall pdfs can be frustrating to deal with. Often they're ok, but often they're not or they have various issues that make them somewhere between triflingly frustrating and utterly impossible to read. If I'm looking to download a book I tend to much preffer formats like EPUB which are a bit more flexible and suited to ereaders, and only get PDFs when nothing else is availiable.

>>59133 I'll keep that in mind. Not having a keyboard or mouse still seems a lot less convenient, but I'll take your word for it.

>>59134 while scouting i found a guy showcasing kobo default and >>59133 suggestion koreader which seems to make it much easier on kobo just as he said. So would try it. That said what i was talking about are a5 and even a4 devices where you wouldn't need any zoom or scroll. Sony released way back a a4 that cost back then $1000 and now can be found at $300 and they also announced a new version that has color. Also found next month is a trade show that will showcase the next generation of screens which have been announced but not shown yet so i guess i started my research with bad timing. Gotta wait for 3 weeks and see what happens then.

I have an Onyx Boox Nova 3 which works great even for scanned PDFs with 20MB+ IIRC all their ebook readers are optimized specifically for PDFs
Cowboy · 2022-04-22 16:55
I use a kobo nia, The thing tries to make you connect to the internet and make an account, but you can circumvent that following this guide https://kobo-offline.virgulilla.com/
Drano · 2022-04-25 13:50
>>59150 looked at boox nova 3 c and air c >original had 3000mah >new model 2000mah >costs $100 more >its slim!!! >265g down to 235g >>59155 pocketbook apparently says straight telemetrics accept (what you read etc.) or you cant use it
SHODAN · 2022-04-27 01:46
I bought a reMarkable because it's linux and the pen is really good
Agent Jones · 2022-04-28 18:30
8" is the best compromise if you read mangas in addition to books/documents. The Kobo Aura One is probably the best ereader they made, too bad they discontinued it. The Sage has a big autonomy problem and the Forma has garbage backlighting. By the way, anyone tried Plato instead of KOreader? Can it open the next file when reaching the end of the current one? >>59274 No backlight, though.
Joe Bloggs · 2022-04-28 18:37
Ive just been reading a map heavy book on an ereader and its becomming very frustrating at times. "red lines indicate this. Blue indicate that." haha, its all grey(k) to me, alas.
Yuki Nagato · 2022-04-28 18:56
>>59351 Yea it even makes me wonder if oled screens are not better overall for reading as you can display colored images, maps, and spare your eyes even more at night by making the text white/gray on a 100% dark background without a backlight.
Cat Mother · 2022-04-28 22:45
>>59352 A decent compromise but still hurt eyes after hours of reading.
BloodCat · 2022-04-29 04:17
>>59131 I can not read any book without seeing 2 pages side by side as they were meant by the editor. This is why I still read fiction on paper and technical documentation published in PDF on desktop screen. However, even 4K resolution makes me zoom things around, angular pixel density is not enough for smallest elements. Ideally I want display that is high density imperceptible to sharpest human eye, at which I can look closer like a real book page and see more detail, curved for every part of it to be same distance from my eyes, wide enough to accommodate 2 or more text pages and space for marginal notes, with high refresh rate.
Aristóteles Amadópulus · 2022-04-29 13:29
>>59351 This is why i originally started this thread, they now offer color versions. Its not lcd competitive but looks sufficient to read graphs. That said as mentioned ealier next month should be next gen so shopping now makes little sense. Also on a sidenote there is rlcd (reflective) which works in sun and seems to be a good compromise - readable like eink, but fast and colors like lcd at cost of lcd battery drain. Sadly the company that came up with it is small and so the few panels in circulation are sold out with no sign of major adaption yet.
Neuromancer · 2022-04-29 15:09
>>59371 ok then mate well there's your answer, there's the possibility that some readers with highly desierable features will come out soon. Haven't yet though, so not too much interest and not too much reviews. Lets see in 3 months ehh?

Touch Taiwan 2022 just ended today and presented kaleido 3. BlackWhite same 300ppi but Color went from 100ppi to 150ppi. Looks like its really worth waiting it out. They also said its now good enough to watch videos but it does look blurry from video i saw. So good enough if you really need it but naturally not something you want for longterm use. That said if its fast like that it will be a lot more usable for moving arround while reading. Now just got to wait & see the price.
Drano · 2022-04-29 22:25
>>59131 >color e-ink What does e-ink even mean at this point? just any screen that isn't backlit?
Naomi Nascimento · 2022-04-29 23:32
>>59388 eink is a display technology like lcd and oled with its own perks. Difference to oled&lcd is image stays visible when you turn power off. Second point is what you mention - its reflective and needs no backlight like lcd so in total zero energy drain for a stable image. You only pay for image change. This means tablets with eink can last you for over a week on a single charge unlike regular tablets that die after 6h usage due screen power drain.
Pris · 2022-04-30 01:51
>>59384 So, electrophoretic garbage still at 300 PPI? Shamefur dispray. Wake me up when it reaches laser print quality of 600. >>59389 It makes sense for static displays that refresh maybe once an hour for their inconvenience not to be noticed. That sorts out every real world application but price tags in artificially lit room. You think having a static display is "great" for reading books? How much does it take you to read a page? 2-3 minutes? You then press a button and wait whole second for it to "turn". Oh, your reader has no buttons and you have to use touch swipes, what misfortune you accidentally closed your eyes or looked aside while touching your display, now your page turned, you did not do it, but it is, you're trying to find a place you've left and out of frustration start swiping left, it highlights a word instead and after a 1 second delay displays a dictionary lookup. What a great user experience! This would not happen with paper book. paper book has tactile feedback both of it's progress (instead of nonsensical virtual pages dependent on current font size or inaccurate percentage) and page turns with rigid control. You either turn page or you don't, especially if you hold the book right. You see two pages at once, and turning them takes as fast as you can possibly achieve without tearing paper. Now this could have been easily simulated on a high-refresh rate dynamic screen, which e-ink readers do not possess. Electrophoretic displays and crappy tablets that use them are garbage.
Armitage · 2022-04-30 12:19
>>59392 Whats the point of this? Dont tell me you understand this but not that people buying ereaders do it as a compromise due not having everything as a book?
Tomohisa "Tom" Kanezaki · 2022-05-11 12:46
Any chinese 10'' eink displays that you guys tried ?
Joe Bloggs · 2022-05-12 02:05
I could really use one of those. I would just need it to be the right size. I could have a math book and work on a couple pages for hours without battery drain. I could possibly mark the page, underlining or writing notes. I wouldn't have a web browser as a potential distractor (the browser is there but on those devices it's really inconvenient to use tor the most part), and though I am very used to reading on a lcd display, I've heard opaque surfaces facilitate better concentration.

>>59400 Majority of e-reader device "consumers" are women who read garbage romance novels, "detectives", harry potter tier fantasy and similar ghostwritten trash sold on Amazon. They are happy not carrying a kiloton of paperback pulp on their beach vacations. Now that's why device was called Kindle. Any person who reads technical or visual-rich literature still has to buy an actual book or arrange a stationary desktop reading setup from high resolution high refresh rate display.

>>59131 WHAT IS PINENOTE?
Neuromancer · 2022-07-05 03:56
>>59131 I do hope that e-ink becomes more relevant. I have a Kindle from a few years ago and even though it's Amazon, no other device has gotten as much use for so long. I'd love to start seeing different types of displays use it more, including something to actually work on rather than just for reading.

>>61465 I've been reading research papers on my soykafty phone screen regularly on downtime. The publication style of separating pages in two textblocks enables to get one textblock fully on screen which makes it readable. Its not as comfortable as a big screen but it works and you arent limited to sit in stuffy office. And that's the real competition for me - tablets have to be sufficient good to justify not simply using your phone. Sure a bigger screen would be nice but you also have to justify carrying it around while you already got your phone with you anyway. I can pull out my phone and read papers on downtime anywhere, it would be a bigger hassle to drag a A4 or A5 tablet with me in addition. The only thing phone lacks is readability in sun light. I think that's also why eink tablets went from just reading into note taking digital paper advertisement- they need a selling point beyond reading that phones cant do. That said there are also eink phones but i've only seen them sold from china so far. Wanted to get one color eink phone for a while now so its outdoor readable. >>59352 Oled can wreck your eyes due PMW which means pulse modulated whiteness. They pulse on/off their instead of dimming to achieve with high frequency flickering on avg the target brightness. Now lower brightness means of course longer off time which also makes flickering more visible. Eyes then try to constantly readjust to high/low brightness and get strained. That said not everyone seems to suffer from it and there are panels without PWM.
Sipho Nkosi · 2022-07-06 21:46
>>61517 Eink looks "normal white" only under direct sunlight. You move into slight shadow to avoid sunburns ant it becomes soviet toilet paper tier. This is why all high-end e-reader tablets have built-in LEDs, to compensate the outdoors light, not to read in dark. Quite ironic isn't it.
