Chonky Palmtop

Chan Siu Ming · 2022-03-06 10:27
https://gitlab.com/norris.daniel/chonky-palmtop "It struck me to put this together when I saw how close in size the 7" touchscreen, battery cells, and crkbd folded vertically that I had sitting on my desk were. And I I needed a build that was actually functional for normal computer stuff, so this seemed like a good idea. It turns out that this is a pretty functional setup. The 7" display is okay as long as I fullscreen stuff. Alt+F11 works with a lot of stuff so far. I've been able to use onshape cad in firefox. It's a little slow, but works as long as firefox doesn't have issues with gfx acceleration. Console stuff and web browsing are great!" Looks really cool.

>>57467 If only anyone could actually get their hands on a Pi 4. Maybe you could replace it with a nuc or something.
Hong, Guil Dong · 2022-03-07 06:49
It's not a palmtop, it by definition can not be used when held in a palm of a hand and operated by fingers of another, that's what palmtops do. >chonky I can not imagine anyone but a 30-something western millennial male with stubby beard using this word to describe anything >raspberry pi Epic lainchan moment >cad in a web browser linecks desktop %current_year%

This reminds me of a 701c. It looks nice.

>>57467 The screen looks like 640x480 or even smaller I find these tinkerer's "portable pc" a little scammy since they're still using a non-x86 cpu and mostly they're always a thick rpi setup with a bunch of proprietary crap like a $30 dollar mini hdmi cable and a $200 640x480 screen. Yes, the screens are expensive, you can buy the same phone with full HD or HD IPS at $20 with good battery and flash some postmarket OS into it. Maybe you can use the proprietary kernel of that "phone" (lucky if it got open sourced) since raspberry pi uses proprietary graphics anyways, you now have a "palmtop" with a usable touch screen but probably not ready on the software side of things. If everything already costs more than ~$200, you might as well just buy the steam deck which starts around $300 >bluetooth >broadcom and built-in wifi Radios bad especially if it's broadpwn You don't even need that much USB ports if you're going mobile since it's probably gonna last an hour with your battery, the extra hdmi ports are also widely useless for portability's sake. Just buy wingtech and flash postmarketos. it also has removable battery, fits the palm, 720p and costs ~$25 on chinese shop apps, costs the same as a raspberry pi cable or case.
Switch · 2022-03-12 21:00
Looks cool as fug, but what would you actually do with it? Can a pi do anything that a rooted phone can't?
Chan Siu Ming · 2022-03-14 03:15
>>57696 yes, it can be more secure and open if you choose pi that has reverse engineered full firmware bios, other than that it's just yet another arm SoC. Like many smartphones.
Boris Grishenko · 2022-03-14 03:24
>>57696 >Can a pi do anything that a rooted phone can't? has more plugs, what looks like a bigger screen, and a mostly real keyboard. All those seem like pretty decent qualities. I'd definitly buy one of these before buying a smartphone myself.
Agent Smith · 2022-03-14 03:35
>>57727 Yea, the only downside i see is you cannot go as "flat" in thickness as smartphone unless there is posibility to order raspberry on the same PCB as your custom additions like having raspberrypi and low profile mechanical keyboard circuit on same board.
Neuromancer · 2022-03-14 03:58
>>57730 even then I don't think you could compete with smartphones on thinness. Its a different form factor, thats just what it is. People don't question whether a smartphone might not be worse than a laptop, if you want a smartphone you sort of want a smartphone, they do different things, work in different use cases.
BloodCat · 2022-03-14 16:54
Any slightly old flagship smartphone with SlimPort dock > regular PC or Pi-abominations at this point. Costs less too. I prefer my computer to fit into pocket and hand rather than not. You can dualboot Android and Linux distribution like Ubuntu/Arch/Debian on top of slightly outdated baseline kernel and run your "desktop apps" for reddit points. Other than that, a desktop mode on latest Androids is more useful since what was the last time you've seen a decent GIS on GNU/Linux or click-and-play console emulator? Right, it's either a terminal or web browser which is slightly fancier terminal, Android offers both, and for the rest of actual useful software there is 4PDA warez.
Jim Hilger · 2022-03-14 21:29
>>57733 I don't care for smartphone thinnes if I cannot operate keyboard that has any feedback. On screen keyboard only positive aspect is that it saves space. It's inferior user experience in all other aspects imaginable. I would fine it very handy if we could have a screen+keyboard+SoC combination that is not unnecessary bulky for modern technological possibilities. But we are not going to go there on own DIY level unless you own your own PCB production line.
Haruyoshi · 2022-03-14 23:14

>>57752 I don't need mixing computer with a phone.
Nemissa · 2022-03-15 03:10
This format is based. It's sad that they seem to have too small market to see items in that format in production more often than once in 7-10 years and for price that is insane.
Chani · 2022-03-15 08:00
Oh damn, I'd really like that.
Otto Normalverbraucher · 2022-03-15 09:43
Pretty cool, but also just not that practical for daily use. I'm not a big fan of permanently used 3D-printed enclosures as in my experience they are not that stable, but of course it is not really viable to make anything more durable for a prototype. Are there any good tablets with linux support? I could imagine that you would get down to the size of a thinkpad with a tablet and a proper mechanical keyboard, but I'm not sure if that would be worth jt >>57493 Oh we got a real smartass here! >it by definition can not be used when held in a palm of a hand So you are saying the "definition" of the chonky palmtop includes a line that says "can't be used from palm"? Could you point me to where in that repo the definition is made? please just stop acting witty and soykaf when you can't even use basic phrases correctly
Donna Hawthorne · 2022-03-15 10:57
>>57784 Palmtop as it's name suggests is supposed to be held on top of palm and operated with fingers or stylus of another one. Apple Newton is a palm-top, Psion 5 is a palm-top. You see, they made up this pointless nomenclature to advertise computer smaller than previously existing lap-tops but still not small enough to fit on one's pocket. Ironically, modern laptop manufacturers strongly advise against putting it on one's lap due to danger of air vent blocking, overheating and possible skin burns. The only recommended use of laptops is on top of a desk with most unergonomic coupling of input and output devices possible. Who am I a mere mortal to tell those mighty corporate marketing departments and enlightened redditors what to call their soykafware, right?
Trinity · 2022-03-15 11:19
>>57785 You really don't understand language yet want to be so overly correct about it huh? You wrote that the thing in the op per definition doesn't fit into a palm, which is totally different from saying a palmtop should fit into a palm per definition.

>>57467 that looks so cool.
Otto Normalverbraucher · 2022-03-19 03:42
>>57592 While I love the basic concept, it really does need some sort of knub or touch pad for using a mouse system. Perhaps some sort of fold out or slide out touch pad system. Keyboard navigation is great, but not every application supports it. Something between a laptop and a phone where you have basic IO and a keyboard, but without being as large in dimensions. calculators are a great example with their physical buttons providing better ergonomics and functionality at lower cost to battery life and durability than something like a tablet's screen
Hagbard Celine · 2022-03-19 03:52
>>57776 If you really want a decent device in that form factor, I would recommend the pine phone with the keyboard add-on. Not exactly as fast as an equivalently priced phone from other companies, but it has some cool features like decent linux support hardware switches for many of the devices normally used to spy on you like wi-fi, camera, gps, etc. Shame it does not have a touch pad for support with distros where touch screen is less supported, but what can you really expect.

Hagbard Celine · 2022-03-19 16:41
>>57949 Thanks for warning me, hoping this gets fixed in future, but this is the company that says dead pixels should be expected on brand new LCD screens, so who knows.
Bob Arctor · 2022-03-20 06:50
>>57964 If there are dead pixels to be expected it means no or almost no quality control is being done to cut down prices. Description of keyboard suggests the same for keyboards. This is a consequence of low volume production and desire to keep price low I guess. Which is not a bad thing IF consumer is WELL INFORMED about these facts.
