yt-dlp

what do you use yt-dlp for, lainons? I use it to download those super long music compilations people make straight into mp3, its so comfy.
Erik Johansson · 2022-02-14 11:06
yt-dlp -youtube. -Memes(since most decent ones get taken down often enough), -music channels(copyright has been pretty prevalent) - tv shows/series uploaded on obscure channels or official 1s since again copyright or because companies could decide at anytime to take it off for whatever reason. -and whatever other unfamily friendly material youtube will eventually erase. -XXX sites youtube-dl(has been soykaf for the better part of last year) -soundcloud -bandcamp -XXX sites

>>56956 Watching videos in MPV with yt-dlp-drop-in. Downloading videos like you would using youtube-dl. I've never understood why people download music through YouTube though. It's not like Soulseek, RuTracker, Bandcamp and Discogs marketplace doesn't exist.
Technician · 2022-02-14 16:19
I found out you can download video comments. I wonder how am I supposed to display and read them later since they are downloaded as JSON file which is not human-friendly to read. Is there something like an html page generator to turn videos downloaded with yt-dlp into pages with comments?

>>56958 >I've never understood why people download music through YouTube though. It's not like Soulseek, RuTracker, Bandcamp and Discogs marketplace doesn't exist. covienence, also am not a retarded audiophile

>>56958 many people have never heard of those things, and youtube-dl is pretty popular. I made a whole script that would download mp3s off youtube and tag them/organize them before I found out about Soulseek.
Lain Iwakura · 2022-02-15 16:22
>>56985 >many people have never heard of those things Likely because they don't want to (or, in the case of Bandcamp and Discogs, because they don't care for paying for individual works or some such). Except for niche interests, that's usually where you'd be pointed to with even a cursory search at getting music in decent quality, but I guess YouTube is convenient, so most people don't bother.
muscle man · 2022-02-15 18:47
>>56956 I use it to put songs on a flash drive so I can have 1000s of songs I love and never worry that they might be taken down from a streaming platform and the radio never has what I like

I download bootleg footage from live shows people took with their mobile phones/cameras/whatever. There's some absolutely unbelievable stuff like that on yt, magical moments in time random people captured and just uploaded onto the internet. They might get taken down or disappear and I want them forever. Obviously, the sound quality is often not very good (and often shockingly good, there's some crazy processing tech in modern phones) but it doesn't matter. I'm talking about a video of Ichiko Aoba playing live on a big rock in the middle of some foggy mountains. It's magic, fairy tale stuff. Or Connan Mockasin playing the most incredible guitar solo while crowd surfing. Or some completely random high-school band covering a song I like and killing it.

>>56971 it's inconvenient and the audio quality is noticeably terrible

>>56971 >covienence, also am not a retarded audiophile If you can't hear the difference between youtube-audio quality and lossless/320ogg then I really don't know what to say to you.

>>58089 a bad case of small ears, maybe? Something that's pretty apparent is that the person in question doesnt have a stereo and hasnt listened to CD quality music, so he's probably pretty young

A couple of things. Watching age restricted videos on YouTube because fuarrrk signing into a Google account to watch soykaf. Back when i had a soykaftier laptop i would pipe youtube-dl/yt-dlp into MPV to force hardware decode for video codecs that were actually in my piece of soykaf dinosaur laptop. I also used to download copies of dead Something Awful video LPs. I'm surprised so many of them have survived on the internet for as long as they have, given their obscurity. Nowadays i mainly use it to watch free to air TV on-demand because even free to air TV requires you to sign into the fuarrrking website to watch soykaf these days.

>>56961 I could look into that. Building a basic web app with flask should be fun and not that time consuming. Going to keep you update on it.
Ivan Horvat · 2022-03-25 13:31
>>56961 A little update from the person that commented above. I created a little Python script that gets the comments from the JSON file and turns it into a HTML page. https://git.lain.church/mevon/Yamabiko/src/branch/master/ Have fun with it :)

>>56956 mostly for downloading small videos/memes that i like. would use it for music if i didn't knew about torreting and soulseek

>>58137 Send this to archivebox developers, they might be interested. It could also generate an "application" page with a script that parses the json inside a browser to save disk space from redundant data, not preprocesses it into static html (which still hotlinks the thumbnais from google's servers to display them as I noticed) Absolute post dates could be hidden behind relative ones and show when you click/hover or via toggle switch.
