HaikuOS Thread
Guthrie · 2022-01-13 21:41
>What?
Haiku is an open source copy of the old BeOS operating system written mostly from scratch, built with the intent of providing an out of this world home computing experience.
>Why?
Linux+BSDs have been in a doghshit shape for some time now. Lack of hardening, , awful ergonomics, bloat, cargo cult design, inevitable limitations of a UNIX system.
Here's the site. https://www.haiku-os.org/
Also, it has a unique desktop and folder structure that's been proven to be more ergonomic than the ancient system both windows and UNIX-likes use.
>When is R1?
When it's done.

Haiku is in beta now, correct? Glad to see that they're making progress (cough) ReactOS (cough)
Hagbard Celine · 2022-01-13 23:07
How stable is it currently?
>>55548
Why has ReactOS not progressed even after the Windows code leak? I know they have to avoid copying for legal reasons but if they do same things using a different language wouldn't they get around that issue?

It's like a brick and about as useful as one too. Tkae this info as you wish.

bricks are pretty useful in the right circumstances.

I tried to install it and didn't work. Although the project looks interesting.

Haiku is a surprisingly capable system, if I needed to I could see myself daily driving Haiku. Also OP its called Haiku, not HaikuOS, the Haiku devs make a point of that

the problem with ReactOS is not reverse engineering the Windows kernel. The problem is that WINE exists. React's main competition is WINE, and so much development went into WINE that its more valuable to invest more into WINE than continue investing in ReactOS

My house is made of bricks.

I get the impression Haiku would be nice on particularly small screens like smartphones / tablets and low end machines including retro computers. I mean if it were capable of being made to run on all that.

Not really, the UI's very much built around floating windows being driven by a proper mouse & keyboard
Six · 2022-01-14 13:45
I've heard that Haiku should not be run on bare metal because it runs everything as root is that true?

Haiku improves its ergonomic design by completely eliminating the middleman 'sudo' or 'doas', by allowing the primary user the FULL extent of their operating system's power right out the gate, no signup or login necessary!

But doesn't this open the door for exploits?
Cutter · 2022-01-14 16:05
>>55599
Windows has degraded its version of 'sudo' to a yes/no popup. Do you really think that's really that far off to how Haiku operates?
Six · 2022-01-14 19:14
>>55601
Windows being insecure isn't a good justification for HaikuOS to be insecure.

It hypothetically opens the door to exploits? But realistically doesn't seem like much of a concern to me.
Almost every piece of software for Haiku is libre, and the code ime for the system itself is readable, generally consistent, and of good quality― their review process is comparatively stringent, too.
Anything you think is dangerous (barring GUI programs) can be run as a seperate user, like the SSH daemon is by default.

The whole point of haiku is it’s a single user system with few restrictions

That's a much better justification. Thanks.

I meant a tweaking for a seporate project. The overall look has that feel to it.

You say that as if there needs to be any justification for not wanting to type out your password every time a fart blows some reeds apart.
