Any Lains have experience with these higher end (ie not raspberry pi etc) ARM boards? Thoughts?

I have an older orange pi, unless you know what you are doing you'll run into problems or heavily rely on the non-existent community at some stage.
pro:
better bang for your buck
con:
not a lot of help out there
I still recommend though for any one here

I do not have any sadly but i would like some mcus for projects, so if anyone does know then please bump.

I've had my eye on them for several years now. If I get into it, I'll report back.

How realistic is the idea of building a laptop based on a single board computer, preferably the one that works fine without binary blobs?

Very realistic if you set your expectations to a realistic level. All you really need is the computer, maybe a little powersupply management board, a battery, keyboard, box and screen. Hop to it and you'll have it by the end of the month.

You most likely won't be any of the following on any given ARM board or device containing ARM processor:
- run latest kernel GNU/Linux OS one year after hardware release
- run latest Android OS one year after hardware release
- run virtual machines
This makes them both terrible general purpose personal and hobbyist computers, they are rather aimed as kits for Internet of Shit developers to be embedded into end devices as "single board" modules or when released by SoC manufacturer, as evaluation boards for any given SoC and it's supplementary chipsets.

They mostly do the same as an Rpi but better, where better = faster in general, but be prepared to decrypt mandarin if you're digging into advanced topics not covered in SDKs or using it for niche projects. ( Very loose analogy for support expectations - rpi = apple, other = android/symbian/blackberry/etc )
You might find it useful to go direct to ARM for the datasheet for the chip used, since the rest of the board could be seen as merely extras around the main course. The board is simply giving access to the features of the chip to a greater or lesser degree. You might find some boards are non-starters because they don't give access to all of a chip's features in the way you'd like, and you'd only know if you compare the chip datasheet to the features of the board it sits on.

Your post inspired me to start working on this "laptop". I just ordered Rock Pi 4A. It seems quite powerful for such a small device Present Day, Present Time! AHAHAHAHAHA!
Mario Rossi · 2022-01-25 00:01
is there any of these that are semi-powerful (can replace my t400)
that don't have their vers of intel me?
i want to build a super low power laptop

What kind of thoughts do you need?
