Best Alternatives to Englishnet

Miho Iwakura · 2021-12-29 20:30
I have been thinking about how locked down the English part of the internet is becoming and it makes me think: is the Japanese, Spanish, Russian, or Chinese nets any better? I used to go on Yiluta (fin board) but now it won't translate. Are there any nets or sites that provide a best of the web for non-english sites?

Okay, can't say anything chinanet or Japanet, but Russianet is up my alley. Simply said, it's a haven for mainly two types of content: >Cracked software By which I mean utility software and high-price programs meant for providing tools to businesses or even just highly demanding individuals. Things like Photoshop and Aida64 are on the lower end of the chain. >DIY instructions A lot of Russians do their sh!t themselves. Wether it be changing their engine oil, doing maintenance on a generator, designing a rain collection system for their house, or even building a whole darn tractor from scratch. And a lot of Russians decide to put that that stuff up on the internet for future reference, like someone once said: 'make cool sh!t and put it on the internet'. Of course, there is the cracked entertainment software and the ubiquitous p0rn, but that's not exclusive to the Russianet. With the coming of Yandex, zen blogs and lifestyle content has grown, but that's pretty much a trash bin and not worth sifting through. I'd recommend learning russian, it can get you extremely far, especially because Russians have that mentality of doing everything themselves, so you can learn a lot from them.

>>54978 >Japanese The Japanese net, once you understand enough to be able to navigate BBS's, Nico Nico Douga, Pixiv, Doujin for very specific fetishes (that would never be translated), is superior to anything I've found on the English net. The amount of dedication these people have, and the quality of their "taste" and style, is unmatched by anyone else. Lainchan is the only English website I go on now, mostly because most of the userbase seems to be European or something (thus not low IQ American pigs). >>55002 >Russians I would recommend learning Russian also, for the reasons that this Lainon gave. Don't learn Chinese or Spanish, there's nothing unique that you're going to find in those places that isn't done 5x better on the Japanet or Russianet.

>>55007 The Chinese I figured would be a crapshoot due to the Great Firewall and Spanish more because I want to learn it anyhow. Overall I want more content like this site as well as different perspectives on current events. Also with how Western society is going might not be a bad idea. I have been using Yandex from finding stuff and it is like how Google was 10-15 years ago, even in English. As for Japanese the layout of Yahoo Japan seemed more functional IMO. I will take a look into these and might use this covid down time to start looking into these languages. Appreciate the responses so far.

The spanish net is pure cancer. Hispachan is 4chan's even more retarded cousin, and wired7 gets lots of pointless posts in certain boards, and overall retardedness. The whole culture is a waste of time, and I am so glad I don't have to deal with that soykaf anymore. There are a few good youtube channels, like MIGALA and Cordura Artificial, but I don't know many, since I have made an effort to stay as far away as I can. There are some good memes tho, but that is true for every culture. I implore you to not waste your time in the spanish net. If you want to learn spanish, limit yourself to talking to interesting, good people, not the lost souls that wander on most of the spanish net. Learn japanese, those places seem far more interesting from what little I have consumed. I don't know any russian, but darknets are full of harmless, interesting-looking russian sites. >>55037 >>55026 Agree. Spanish is still definitely worth learning, especially for Americans. The USA has more Spanish speakers than Spain, so it makes sense to learn it as a second language. Moreover, said passel of Spanish speakers in the USA makes learning it quite easy compared to other languages due to the number of resources and speakers. Lastly, Spanish/Latin literature and music are excellent and worth consuming. On another note, any tips on learning Russian? I want to reach A2 in Russian as a 2022 goal; wondering if any lainons have any tips. Already know about basic stuff like Anki as I used it to learn Spanish. >>55043 >Thinking of buying "Beginner's Russian with Interactive Online Workbook" by Anna Kudyma--thoughts? Don't use this crap. For me, I've found that JLPT vocabulary flashcards, writing JLPT Kanji everyday, passively watching videos/listening to music, and reading everyday while crosschecking a grammar guide/dictionary when things start to make zero sense, has helped me much much more than a textbook could ever. Textbooks are boring (more boring than writing hundreds of Kanji, trust me), and the scripts that you learn can only be used in very specific circumstances. Do you want to learn and memorize thousands of scripts, or would you like to have actual insight into how the language works, and be able to fluidly access grammar/sentence constructions? It just takes longer until you can understand, and can actually talk with others, but it is worth the trouble. I've been around enough of these textbook people, and they really can't understand many basic things, and their sentences are very rigid. >>55038 >>55039 Kiwifarms was interesting to a 14 year old me, and back then the content of the site was also higher. Now that I'm an adult, I don't understand what the appeal of discussing, and dissecting the lives of "weirdo eccentrics" is. Also, the site's quality has heavily degraded, and it's becoming more and more like halfchan by the day. More and more people are posting "flat-speech" (word constructions devoid of any meaning), Twitter reaction gifs, Simpson's reactions gifs, Pepe/Wojak, etc... It's a horrible website, and these people are just a sad as any lolcow.

Spaghetti here. I just realized I don't even know if there's a spaghetti net out there. Probably not so much considering the small population of native speakers. Sometimes I feel more close to me facts that are happening in North America, thousands of kilometers away from my peninsula, than facts that are happening, idk, in North Africa At least I have a very good knowledge of the idiom of Perfidious Albion now, hopefully it will remain the Lingua Franca of the world for a few more decades. This is why Japan and Russia have such vibrant internet communities: they developed rapidly and, for the former, maintained steady development, while the latter had very accessible advanced education in the fields of science and engineering to keep pumping new life into the later geeky internet. In this regard, English language does not work as lingua franca, to learn specific regional knowledge you still have to visit web resources or dig up books from obscure national library online catalogues in target language. E.g. my interests have put me in front of lots of Japanese, German, Swedish, French, Russian web pages and books. Example: you won't find live knowledge in English language on European-centric housekeeping, e.g. electric wiring and small stuff like this. Every time you make a search query it's either about North America or Britain which have completely different consumer markets and separate standards like sockets and wiring schemes. You won't find info on efficient firewood stoves unless you know Russian (thanks to pirate sites it is now possible to see some old soviet books), all resources in English language on this topic come from Russian migrants in north America who sell installations to rich yuppies for their Montana mcmansions, the list goes on and on. Same for log building and associated carpentry and forestry techniques, most stuff is Russian or Swedish. My first ever interaction with foreign-nets was due to my obsession with pepakura and origami, I used to visit lots of Japanese web in the mid 2000's.

I know Japanese. Maybe I'm just looking in the wrong places, but the Japanese web doesn't seem that great. It looks like almost everyone just uses Twitter or YouTube or some other English-web garbage, though it seems nikoniko is becoming more popular recently because they're less jewy than Youtube when it comes to paying creators. Japanese text/imageboards are terrible from what I've seen. They're are usually very difficult to navigate, having huge lists of boards that are 99% dead with no organization or indication as to which are active (although if there are vt*ber boards they'll get tons of activity). The post quality isn't that great either in my experience. Occasionally I'll come across an oldschool personal site, but they're prone to link rot and/or so much autism that I can't bring myself to read half of what they post. I remember seeing someone write an actual academic paper on an idolmaster song. One site about actually good webnovels I had bookmarked recently went offline. If any other dekirus have links to actually good Japanese sites, please share them.

>>56088 You're really revealing your age here. Back in 2008 it was a fantastic site full of everything, and had a similar culture to 4chan. The spanish speaking web experience has become super similar to the anglo web in the last 5-8 years: youtubers, twitch streamers, etc are the main sources of content. People use IG + WA to chat (and now telegram). Folks who would've used Taringa / 4chan are all in subreddits. When the anglo web started to crack down on piracy and Megaupload and Rapidshare dissapeared, I used to mostly use Taringa + spanish/portuguese language blogspots to find content. But then the web monetized everything and people began expecting to get paid for sharing content.

Argentinian here, also lived for some years in Spain so I can talk about both online communities: they are pretty soykaf, barely anything interesting going on, even the tech-focused ones are mostly about javascript, webdev, etc. very casual stuff. I'm amalgamating Twitter, forums, boards, etc. here The only thing I can say it's better is that usually we are much more relaxed in terms of "serious topics", you can joke with almost anything: shootings, covid, wars, whatever. Everyone I follow from USA or Europe seem to take things waaay too seriously (except maybe in 4chan or similar places ofc). >>55093 This is true though, come to Argentina, top notch education in public universities, completely free, and if you bring USDs or Euros everything will be dirt cheap for you. Buenos Aires is a great city. Just don't expect to have Macs or even toilet paper in the university, I said the education is good not the infrastructure.

>>55430 5 months late reply but here's a textstorm anyway; You clearly aren't familiar with the userbase of Kiwi Farms or what they actually do. Seems to me you just read headlines and gossip whenever some big drama happens. Back in the days of real trolling, like /b/tards harassing vents, paltalks, irc groups full of teenagers that enjoyed naruto, true capitalist radio, etc, the owner of the site, Null, was one of the many children that enjoyed watching such trolling get archived and reuploaded onto popular internet hubworlds, such as YouTube. Fast forward a few years, Null learns more about the adventures of Christian W. Chan and takes over the CWCki Forums, listens to forum user requests, and not too long after that, the KF is born. Now by this point, the trolling sphere is dead, after many of the anonymous posters participating in the wars against moot and his fagmods got burnt out. By then, internet culture was already in dire straits, with terms such as "edgy manchild sh.itlords" becoming apart of our common online discourse. If you were to click on the front page of KF right now, you'd see that all of the subforums are dedicated to e-celebrities, specifically ones that are very depressing, and thus provide no laughter whatsoever. Digging deeper past those forums, you can start to paint a clearer picture of where Null's site is headed, as older users head for the door, and newer, less-comedic users muddy the site's traditions, more and more each day. There's no doubt in my mind that the Farms will become another Something Awful. Null's already stated multiple times that he hates the site's current userbase, and wants to get back to the simpler times, when Deagle Nation was active. Keep in mind, he's gone into many impulsive tantrums, front-paging his rants about the community, and wanting to pass down the keys to someone else so he can "settle down and have kids in asia" or some bullshit.

The post quality isn't that great either in my experience. Not to mention the relentless spam. I remember a few years ago, people would always mention how "Japanese imageboards are like the early 2000s chan community!!!", but if you go on Futaba and look at any boards that aren't the main nijiura boards, you'll see tons of retarded spam memes about some hikkiposter that got dawksd, similar to the wojack soykaf on english boards. >the Japanese web doesn't seem that great. It looks like almost everyone just uses Twitter or YouTube or some other English-web garbage The Japanese web has always been full of self-publishing mangaka/game developers. The fact that they can make a social media account to not only promote their works, but reach people with the same niches with the "related tweets" system, reaching more potential customers than they could with a website that wouldn't be indexed on major search engines due to: hentai, and not only that, but not having to bother learning HTML, is a godsend for them. >Occasionally I'll come across an oldschool personal site, but they're prone to link rot and/or so much autism that I can't bring myself to read half of what they post The Japanese interwebs was already basically a landing site for nerds that were on underground bulletin boards. Most "oldschool personal sites" are just that, spinoffs of pre-existing dial-up boards, and personal sites for creators that sold stuff physically at meet-ups and conventions.

>>60888 Thankfully yes. It looks like the owner went radio silent in mid 2019 and the website expired judging by the squatter look it has now, but who knows. I now keep a "save page now" bookmarklet to archive anything I find interesting so I don't have to hope it happened to be archived by someone else. It's not a complete archive of the site but the pages I was thinking of are archived and linked to from the homepage. The URL was oreno-jinsei.work if anyone is interested. Also of note is megalodon.jp, it's kind of like a Japanese version of the Wayback machine. Not nearly as expansive, but worth checking in cases like this (this one wasn't archived there).

Arabic internet is trash. Everything is strictly controlled and censored. Dictatorships, monarchies, and the US government work with Facebook and Google to make sure their sites are scrubbed clean of any form of dissent. If your Palestinian, expect your posts to be taken down for antisemtism or some other soykaf, if your Egyptian and you criticize the regime your just as good as dead, if your a Saudi and you say something the royal family doesn't like your going to be charged with "terrorism" and sent to prison. After the invasions of Iraq and Afghanistan, the US military had a program to install tons of spyware cellphones, PCs, and laptops being sold in the Middle East and to this day countries like Israel, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE do the same. Before they killed Khashoggi they installled all kinds of soykaf on his phone and PC to allow the hit squad to track him. Because of all of this, there really isn't a unique internet culture in the Arab world outside the jihadi sites and nowadays most of those are fronts designed to entrap people. Everyone uses Whatsapp, Facebook, Twitter, and Telegram etc. if your young its trendy to just learn English or French and surf the web in those languages rather than Arabic.

I don't speak Japanese so I can't say much about it. China is behind the Great Firewall, so even more locked down. The Spanish part of the Internet is a little too small, but seems nice. Russian Internet is truly glorious, but every day I get more scared that it'll get cut off from the rest of the world. The Russian chans are amazing, and the piracy sites are a treasure trove. bash.im used to be a great collection of stories, but after the war it became a black page with nothing but the phrase "No To War", and now no longer exists at all. :(

>>64304 Confession time. I was an active vichan user back in the day. There was a sticky thread on the music board with an instruction image on how to embed video links, I made that one, it was there for a couple of years. More importantly in one random thread I came up with a meme that would became unbelievably popular on the Polish internet. Later on I basically got bored and gave up on Polish internet and general chan culture as well and haven't really kept tabs on it. Ten years pass and I suddenly discover that this joke I made in some silly thread on viszą one evening is still all over the internet, youtubers use it, kids use it, my mother uses it, it's become a part of Polish internet vernacular and then crossed into real life. Even my uncle uses it and it was actually based on him. Crazy. I have never told anyone about this, you're genuinely the first. Anyway, what people don't realize about vichan is that there was like a 200 people there, 400 max. It was a relatively tiny community. And that tiny bunch of neets, actual children, tibia addicts, f23 refuges (by the way, f23 forume was the true ground zero of Polish meme culture, the absurdity and idiotic energy of that place were completely ahead of the curve, there was nothing like that on internet at that time cool czesc rucham psa jak sra biegam nago po lesie i płoszę cietrzewie) and that one guy that was forcing garbage demotywatory to óczucie meme that would later mutate into feels guy aka wojak created all those memes that are still in use 10, almost 15 years later. It's insane. It gets better though. In one thread on vichan about Polish culture and identity and racism and stuff like that this one anon made a very particular and very intelligent argument. A week later this same argument, verbatim made it to the speech of Donald Tusk, then Polish prime minister. Somebody from the government was a lurker or a even a vichan poster. There were some journalists lurking there as well and they got cenzopapa material printed in an actual newspaper (internauci śmiejo się z Papieża Polaka!) I actually bought that newspaper, I still have it somewhere, it was so funny.

You need a lot of contextual information to make Spanish net work for you imo. There is almost no intelligent discussion to be found in Spanish speaking forums, and every good piece of info you can find, it will be translated from English. The real interesting stuff is on the meme side, but those tend to be very local. Venezuelan memes were at the cutting edge of internet comedy for a while; right now I've seen gringo meme accounts reposting soykaf from two/three years ago. Sadly they've become more and more derivative, tho. Right now I'm more into Chilean political memes, which are being copied by Americans faster than before. I'm also getting into Brazilian stuff, I'm still getting over the language and contextual barrier but seems promising. I moved to western Europe a couple of months ago and it seems boring on the meme front. Maybe I just have lame acquaintances but they just spout old memes and TikTok trends from like 6 months ago. That and everyone loses their soykaf at 8 year-old pop songs like there's nothing more interesting going on right now. Russian net seems like an interesting place, lots of information and different perspective, but I fear it might be on its way to becoming as rancid as Venezuelan net is atm. I just have that feeling about it. Everyone seems to hype up Japanese net but I'm not a sexual deviant or a raging racist and most anime bores me so I'm honestly not interested. All in all, the internet is truly dead. The only way forward is to bring into the real world the culture that developed there.
