Best color scheme?

Unspecified · 2021-12-28 22:42
What is the overall best color scheme for readability, syntax highlighting, ergonomics etc?
Zero Cool · 2021-12-28 23:38
Whichever you're more used to.

>>54940 I used to love dark themes. Now I'm a sucker for solarized light. I find it relaxing. In the end use whatever feels right to you.
Neo · 2021-12-29 10:07
>>54943 Same. White on black or Black on white is the best.
Bob Arctor · 2021-12-29 13:27
I came from dos, so i love dark backgrounds (also, I'm a firm believer in eye strain benefits, as a sufferer of migraines). Because I'm a huge tranny, I love gentle pastel foreground colours, with an emphasis on pink.
Ender · 2021-12-29 13:29
>>54940 Pic rel. 1 is my colour scheme in python, 2 is in haskell (ignore the appalling code)
Armitage · 2021-12-29 20:32
I encourage everyone to explore less syntax highlighting. I feel like the fruit loops inspired trend of today has gotten out of hand and the visual assault is a detriment to productivity. At first just colorize (or just boldify) strings and comments and add other stuff you feel like you actually need. I have keywords italicized in addition to the aforementioned and haven't needed anything more since. Books don't highlight verbs in green, either!
Case · 2021-12-29 20:50
From what I've read on design and vision best is a slightly off white background with slightly off black text. Though of course if you're in a dimly lit area then it's reversed unless you have a screen that produces black by flickering which the invisible flicker can cause potential problems. You definitely don't want too little contrast but also not too much contrast either. You need to find the balance and use a monitor that uses a non flicker way of producing black such as DC regulating.
Terzibashjian · 2021-12-29 22:23
A big fan of emacs's deeper-blue. For the terminal, #aaaaaa on black goes well with bitmap fonts. >>54979 I don't disagree. In my example, I'd do better without the blue, red and orange.

Debbie Charteris · 2021-12-30 17:44
Anything dark high contrast/OLED focused. Its nice to larp with funky cyberpunk aesthetics but I always go back to ugly '80s CAD looking soyk.
Special Agent Bob · 2021-12-30 22:50
i use bright themes, dark is distracting

>>54994 See https://marc.info/?l=9fans&m=111558908224071. You may not care about syntax highlighting in specific, but there was still thought in the choice of colors that go with Plan 9 applications and how they reflect into the user and whatnot (and, judging from your reaction, they were pretty good).
llz · 2022-01-01 11:33
You just write your own if you want to have a great theme. The thread ends here.

>>55046 Man of I wrote my own theme it would end up looking like Windows' hot dog stand theme. Believe me, the thread does *not* end here.

I for one can't use dark theme during day light otherwise I would vote for Gruvbox. My eyes are about to fallout when I have to constantly switch between light background & dark text (web browser) and dark background & white text. I don"t like the idea of constant switching between dark/light environment using tweaks or extensions so I rather prefer to use the light environment. And for what it is I pref whatever light theme is preinstalled in whatever software I'm about to use. Yet most of the time I spend is in emacs so for me it's color scheme named leuven.

>>54940 i like solarized dark, i know thats unpopular to like now because it became so popular. Also dracula is nice, what im currently using. Really i dont think it matters much as long as there is some difference to quickly differentiate pieces of/types of text
Sabo Engle · 2022-03-31 23:01
>>54940 I used solarized dark, nord and gruvbox. IMO grubox (especially in its hard variant) is the best from aesthetics and usability standpoints, but I can use whatever at this point. To be honest, the only reason for why I stuck with gruvbox is that I fuarrrkING HATE the blue color. It makes me fuarrrking sick. Blue belongs on cars only, period.

bad thread. Use default, color scheme is not important for productivity.

Joe Bloggs · 2022-04-25 12:14
zenburn is cool color scheme.
William Holtzer · 2022-04-28 16:48
>>54943 I found this to work best in terms of contrast but can be harsh on the eyes sometimes. I tone it down by choosing a slight shade of warm off-white for the background, and a very dark shade of gray for the foreground.
Hong, Guil Dong · 2022-05-23 19:18
>>54940 White on black/black on white is ideal for contrast, but this mix is bad for eyestrain due to the large amount of light they produce, and the blue light. The ideal color scheme is black background with a colors ranging from red to green for UI elements Green has best contrast, but red is best for eye strain. I personally run a mix of pure green mixed with some orange and then some yellow/red for special text that I want to stand out.
John Titor · 2022-05-23 21:37
Cyberpunk because I'm a cyberpunk

some really nice color schemes in this thread. >>59211 stop using compilers or programming languages, they're memes. build wooden shack in forest.
Nemissa · 2022-05-25 15:31
>>60241 A wooden shack, assuming it looks like millions of previous wooden shacks the world over since the emergence of carpentry, is a structure based on imitation, passed on via culture. Wooden shack is therefore also a meme.

>>60239 Downloaded from web because I posted it on break at work while away from home. I daily drive orange/green UIs because I got bad eyestrain looking at white/black/blue colors during online school. I studied lighting and eye strain until I got the color mixes I found to be ideal for minimum eye strain. The screenshot I posted is not great, but it was just to get the idea across.

Solarized Dark is very popular and some spaz took a six month leave of absence from his job to fuarrrk with it every day and make it perfect. They have it for most IDEs and CLIs so you can have consistency across all your soykaf.
