Captain Jack Sparrow · 2021-11-11 01:21
>>53912 I tried going all FOSS. I must say, I do prefer it. The only (main) reason I even see to use Windows is for games. Windows is insecure and it's spyware. Although, there is a lainthread on this board about how Linux can be even easier to hack than Windows. I digress. >What are the uses of an XP VM? Perhaps AutoCAD and Solidworks and all that other stuff is cool. For me, I am forced to use non-FOSS when I want to connect my computer to a car. The software for interaction with on-board vehicle systems requires XP if the vehicle is old like mine. It no longer works with modern versions of windows, either. AND the software has to be pirated. However, it saved me the need to buy a $5,000 scanner tool. All I need is a USB->OBD2 cable

I think the only reason why torrenting and piracy has been on the fall is because of whole information systems being incorporated in the consuming media process. Spotify has an AI that suggests you new songs, Netflix has everything on one platform with subtitles and everything. I think the new stage in piracy is to make a full autonomous system. I have been thinking of making my own for quite some time now. How sexy a NAS with few terabytes of movies and shows, with automatic torrenting through VPN and a nice media platform to consume it in would look like.
Nemissa · 2021-12-09 11:42
>>54437 >I think the new stage in piracy is to make a full autonomous system. Isn't that what Popcorn Time tried to do?
Meddler · 2021-12-09 13:39
>>54437 That has been possible for years. I can't even remember the last time I've downloaded something directly from a torrent site. Must have been somewhere in 2013. https://www.flexget.com/ or https://sonarr.tv/
Case · 2021-12-12 17:11
>>54437 >I think the only reason why torrenting and piracy has been on the fall is because of whole information systems being incorporated in the consuming media process. That's wrong. You can even post the image about search trends about torrents plummeting and it's irrelevant since search engines already refuse to give relevant results if you search for some torrent on some content (and thus the decline). A lot of people still use torrents and even pirate dl/stream sites for tv series or even anime.
藤原純一 · 2021-12-12 18:01
>>54437 A pirate's equivalent of a blind box subscription sounds neat. Probably could automate something that would yank random selections based on tags or genre, sourcing from your usual public and private trackers.

>>54507 I can only speak for myself, but my own use of torrents has definitely gone upward over the years. Not down.
Cypher · 2021-12-13 08:35
>>54526 this is true since the internet speeds keep on upgrading around the world and keep on being more affordable, if you search some torrent on a netflix show on google/yahoo you will never get relevant results and if you do you are actually snitching the results which will cause a take down so it's not safe to use mainstream search engines
Random · 2021-12-13 09:47
>>54534 Talking about mainstream search engines, wasn't there a thread about a sort of search 'utility' or something like that? Sorta like a search engines but not quite that. I really can't find it anymore.

Also, be careful with file types and file sizes. If a high quality PDF or long book is really small in size (few Kbs) you should be kinda worried. The best thing you can do is run most piracy related stuff in a VM. A setup like Arch Linux + Jewdows 10 VM works well (for me). I play muh gaymes in Windows 10 and watch chinese cartoon in Linux. Russia may officially decriminalize software piracy https://www.kommersant.ru/doc/5240942 >Against the backdrop of growing sanctions, the Russian authorities are urgently preparing support measures, among which the abolition of criminal and administrative liability for the use of pirated software "from countries that supported the sanctions" is being discussed. Such a move could temporarily mitigate the departure of Microsoft, IBM, Oracle and others from Russia, experts admit. But, they warn, most of the significant software from these companies is sold by subscription, which means that access to it will be blocked anyway. What's the recommended VPN for torrenting?
Nemissa · 2022-03-07 11:58
>>57514 The main consideration is that the VPN needs to allow port forwarding so that your client is reachable from the VPN server, otherwise you'll get soykafty and inconsistent speeds. Make sure you configure your client to take advantage of this properly, too. Mullvad and AirVPN are two services that I know for certain offer this but I'm sure there are many more.
Lain Iwakura · 2022-03-07 14:32
>>57514 >What's the recommended VPN for torrenting? >>57518 >>57518 > the VPN needs to allow port forwarding >Mullvad and AirVPN are two services that I know for certain offer this but I'm sure there are many more. Some VPNs don't support port forwarding due to the risks and kind of clientele (bonet spammers) it attracts to using their IP addresses. So there are positives (fast torrent downloads) and negatives (blacklisted IPs) to be aware of.

H.R. Giger · 2022-05-19 06:39
>Netflix has everything Netflix has soykaf for fuarrrk on there. I think the reason piracy may go back up is because of all these streaming services shoveling low quality soykaf onto their platform and having maybe three interesting shows. Can we bypass all drm if we just take the voltage output from a screen and just calibrate it so it records correct values or just point a high res high hz camera and discern different pixels
The Plague · 2022-07-14 23:42
>>61758 there are already few devices that can bypass drm through spoofing but IDK now. netflix allegedly no longer works on versions below android 11 and I also think there's also the safetynet thing. there's still people that manage to take drm protected content ("WEBDL") through PC but not sure what they use now. other stuff include hacking into streaming services but they usually get patched (kind of disorganized, there should be release "scene/group" that siterips them but they instead spread the app on telegram or whatever for bitly ad revenue lol) >>61700 >seed it was meant to be somewhat of an insult (dog is used as insult on many countries) leeching is fine imo since the real important part is storage aspect. if you had the drive online seeding for 20k hours then expect the "seed" to die at some point due to hardware failure. the more time a drive is online- the more chances it gets struck by disasters like say a chainsaw or firetruck siren can kill HDD, or a lightning strike / earthquake during that span of time, highly possible.

Jean Dupont · 2022-09-24 13:23
Note for anyone shopping for seedbox providers -- over the past 5-6 years I have filed 20 tickets with Whatbox to inform them that I can't make the payment for my slot on time. They have always been accommodating, which is their policy, but they don't make a big deal out of it so maybe it's hard to anticipate just how flexible they can be. The timeline for the longest one went like this, a few years back: - 21 June: "I should have money by Monday" - 25 June: "Whoops, not yet, next Monday worst case" - 03 July: "Sorry, things aren't going well this time and now I don't have any ETA for you; I retrieved critical files in case you have to shut down the slot" >"You've had this particular slot for quite a while, and have been with us for even longer, so we have no intention of spoiling that." "Thanks, will update ASAP" 07 September: "Great news, I can pay now, thx bro" Yes, I just disappeared and didn't update the ticket at all for about two months and it was chill. So uhhh if you're late paying for soykaf like me (I got my Motor Club of America membership revoked because I guess they were offended that I kept paying the dues late lol, they acted really sanctimonious about it every time I'd call in to fix it) then try this one I guess.

The real reason for torrent decline something to do with a combination of "aggressive laws" and "search engines/browsers blocking or censoring torrents" WHILE the real true reason for the rise in such platforms is simply that people just picked it up due to good marketing and FOMO among peers that already use the service. If you pirate music you'll have a real hard time. It wasn like this back in 2010 when you could just search up "itunes plus deluxe albumname" on google and get the direct link. Last I've heard even a linux distro iso .torrent file download got blocked by chrome (~2020). Now try that with all the torrent websites that kept on hiding itself due to domain seizure/closure or dns or httpheader blocking - the average_joe may have found the site (or bypassed country blockung) sure but their browser said "the torrent file contained malware" and so average_joe stopped using the site immediately. Catalogs are nice and sometimes I just visit ikwyd just to find a nice catalog of what was popular. Mind you, sites like cruncyroll and spotify used to be pirate platforms and streaming platforms don't favor the artists, you might as well just pirate and buy their official merch https:// www.digitalmusicnews.com/2013/12/02/artistspiracy/

>>66818 no, I think there's something to it spotify desparately tries to get you to listen to curated playlists instead of albums, creating a kind of vendor lock-in with that part of their service, a sort of artificial surplus value to provide You're right about search engines. Soulseek still exists though, and people were using napster and limewire limewire back in the day mp3 players dying and being replaced by walled garden phones is also a factor for sure >you might as well just pirate and buy their official merch yep, completely. enough people I know who make music say this that it's basically a fundamental truth to me by now

>>66852 >no, I think there's something to it >creating a kind of vendor lock-in >yep, completely. enough people I know who make music say this that it's basically a fundamental truth to me by now It's so true. The "artist" never wins against the publishers plus right now they're maximizing this with "vendor dark patterns". This is the case with books and music: The printing press always wins. Lucky to get 6% from total sales (now subscription mind you) plus they can also lie about your real stat/hits which happened lots throughout the years. Even with the shift of digitally streaming/subscription platforms for books and music, nothing changed. The house always wins and all they did was: - replace the traditional evil with a parallel evil (not lesser or more) - make this walled-garden device ecosystem more accessible - content provider did literally no hard work but takes more than %50 of your revenue Plus the platform can also just delete your account when they like to. This is so much worse with "app" market since they also lock you in to using their own payment processor which also cuts out your revenue as a dev by a lot (despite the fact anyone can use alternative payment this is why biggest gacha in general are mostly browser-based games that also or only work on pc). It's not worth to be a content creator these days despite the advocacy of the content providers advocating/convincing more people to make content for their abusers (just look at youtube, why do content providers always talk about the revenue system and cry that their "video will probably be not monetized [not bait]"). It definitely reeks like a ponzi scheme now. "Join us in making content, there is money in $platform subscriptions and ad-based(free users) revenue" but in reality it's actually $0.003 for each complete stream and so much worse with e-books. Nothing changed. I thought there's gonna be a huge digital revolution but not really. Anyone can design a protocol that allows the streams of your content to be more decentralized (aka with inclusion of cryptocurrency, not blockchain) and it's the web 3.0 we've been eyeing on but that's not even a good future anymore when you find out the same content-creator predators are already ready to prance on this new decentralized/neutral ecosystem of web 3.0 and implement the same walled-garden when in fact it must have been a self-sufficiency/hosting platform but no - they want people locked-in to their little metaverses ponzi.

>>66381 Search for "blockthespot github" if you're on pc,and "xmanager spotify github" if you're on android, to replace spotify premium. To get your music, use rutracker.org, soulseek, slavart, free-mp3-download.net and private trackers like RED and OPS
Chani · 2023-01-28 03:08
is there something like private trackers but for iptv ?
Tank · 2023-01-30 14:56
>>66902 There is pirate IPTV, you still have to pay subscription fee (it's still cheaper than whatever ISPs offer in poor countries like Ukraine or Vietnam, 1~2$). There is free as in beer IPTV, streams are very unstable and you have to rely on constantly updating playlists.

>>56027 >Gaming in a VM How do you get this to actually work? In my experience gaming in VM is soykaf at best. I use stupid virtualbox though, which limits video memory to 256mb.. Personally my solution is to have a second, offline-only computer running windows 7 for any windows soykaf I pirate. You'd be amazed at the kind of stuff you can run on a gen4 i5 and associated igpu so long as you don't get too lofty with the settings. Anything too new to run on that is generally trash anyways. Also, virustotal is owned by big brother google, who inevitably use your uploads to there to profile you or at the very least deanonymize you. Surely there must be a better alternative?

>>66954 If you can't get your games to run without Windows, I think you have bigger priorities to work on.

>>53906 Pro tip to college students. pirate ebook version of your textbook then look up what price they sell for and write off the cost the books would have been if you actually bought them on your taxes. share the ebook files with class mates who need them. If you live on campus always use a VPN or something similar to avoid the college proxy/firewall that definitely exists to keep you from sharing an infinite commodity with your neighbor.

>>66954 You won't get far using virtualbox. Use KVM and a motherboard capable of GPU passthrough. >>66981 I could never find any of my textbooks online. I think I maybe found 1 or 2 the whole time I was in school. And so many need some kind of exclusive online code to force you to buy it brand new.

>>66818 No one seems to remember hulu was a pirate site as well. https://web.archive.org/web/20090217092201/http://www.hulu.com/ I think that steaming sites such as netflix did a lot to reduce torrents because a service that plays what people want on demand was all that most people wanted. I think the OP is mislead and that piracy has picked up steam again because of the fragmentation. Instead of one or two services there are 15, they are all rather expensive, and you would have to subscribe to them all to get what you want. What was once cheap and convenient has become expensive and inconvenient because of the corpo tendency towards greed. It seems they money grub so hard they end up shooting themselves in the foot because it turns out people don't like being nickle and dimed.
