what are the best stacking window managers?
Technician · 2021-11-10 21:47
>>53350
Start by learning GNU/Linux skills: https://linuxcommand.org/tlcl.php
Install Debian (if you don't have GNU/Linux system already): https://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/unofficial/non-free/cd-including-firmware/current/amd64/iso-cd/firmware-11.1.0-amd64-netinst.iso
Learn a scripting language, for example:
Tcl: https://wiki.tcl-lang.org/page/TCL+for+beginners and https://wiki.tcl-lang.org/page/Tcl+Tutorial+Lesson+0 and the man-pgae: https://manpages.ubuntu.com/manpages/jammy/en/man3/Tcl.3tcl.html
Ruby: Programming Ruby 1.9 & 2.0 (4th edition) The Pragmatic Programmers' Guide and https://rubyfu.net/
Then read the newest editions of Gray Hat Hacking, Web Application Hacker's Handbook, The Art Of Exploitation and Malware Analyst's Cookbook and DVD. I recommend reading https://savannah.nongnu.org/projects/pgubook (Programming from the Ground Up Book) to get the basics of how a computer works. If you want to learn to design programs, https://htdp.org/ is the right way to start.
>>53354
>what are the best stacking window managers?
It depends. OpenBox, FVWM and windowmaker are good. See https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/WM#Stacking_window_managers for other options. If you don't know which to pick, install OpenBox (also install obconf and lxappearance-obconf). If you want a full DE, LXQT is good.

I looked at a couple of guides but they only hide the small icon and not the giant text box on screen in Raspbian OS.
sudo nano /boot/config.txt
# Disable under-voltage warning
avoid_warnings=1
Only hides the icon, not the giant text that's actually annoying. What can I do? Puppy Linux does not do this message however I'm trying to make a proper OS out of Raspbian, it connects to the net easier than Puppy for pi and also it's resolution on my monitor is much better for book reading than puppy and I doubt puppy would have Retropie working on it anyway very well in comparison to Raspbian having it of course. Maybe Mednafen I could do I assume but no thanks. I don't want to flip flop OS's, have no confidence that I can dual boot via one sd card (nor should have to) and I read the sd switcher hardware requires unplugging to reset of which defeats it's purpose.
Advice in what to add to config.txt next? Do I have to downgrade the Raspbian to it's older version? Will Retropie still work if I do or is the repository going to not be backwards compatible?

I also tried:
sudo nano /boot/cmdline.txt
loglevel=1
at the very end of it in that text file but it's still there. I'm an eternal noob. I got rid of the easily ignored lightning bolt icon but it's the text box that's killing me taking up too much of the screen to ignore.

I am trying to block companies from selling data from my android phone, it is bootloader locked, the settings app does not allow me to change the dns without setting a static ip, using those kinds of apps that block connections by routing packets back to the device via vpn leak at startup and just after connecting, and they also cut out sporadically. this make it limiting on public networks. Is my best bet to install the android ndk and test out some expoits or am I missing something simple? Could someone share some links about how android devices are usually exploited?

Originally they used BeagleBone Black as a root of trust because it runs fully free software OS. This quickly jumped into Raspberry Pi because that's what everyone has an it also can run fully free software in headless mode. In practice, all of these setups are baseless LARP and waste of funds. I understand that a small single board computers can be positioned closer to flashing motherboard. However, same can be said about dedicated programmer on USB extender cable.
CH341A programmer + Pomona clip clone + second Linux computer with USB port and flashrom. Even Windows XP + GUI software that interfaces with this programmer board would work equally if not better.
Prepare to have coil whines, backlight problems and whatever embedded controller bugs are there. I hope you've read all libreboot docs and consulted their repository. Last time I bothered to check, "stable" version hasn't changed since 2016, and all the cool hackers long since moved to newer laptops with coreboot and me_cleaner.
Here's fun thing to do instead. Install Windows 3.1 on BIOS flash chip:

To understand which phone processors are most supported by open source developers, I refer to this table:
https://wiki.postmarketos.org/wiki/Mainline_SoCs
Then visit their individual kernel source repositories and check what devices trees are most active. Generally Qualcomm devices are well supported by at least an "Unofficial" build of LineageOS, from this point you have to deep dive into XDA forum. From what I've seen, some devices are even able to dual boot Android+GNU/Linux on kernels versions 3-4 with backported patches with external screen (SlimPort) working. Snapdragon 820 and 845 are the most popular ones. Last removable battery "flagships" were LG G5 and V20. First one has removable bottom part, hence replaceable ports, the second one - doesn't, logic board is literally one solid C-shaped PCB and USB port is soldered right onto it. Coincidentally, there was a "mini" version of V20 sold in Japan as "ISAI Beat", it's battery non-removable (although relatively easily accessible from what I've seen: no glue, only screws) with promises of spill protection, but both audio and USB ports are on easily replaceable ribbon cable, hence you've got to choose between two metaphorical chairs as they say in Russia. V20 (as well as G5 with special bottom part accessory) also has a reportedly high-quality audio chip praised at audiophile forums, so it's a good candidate for DAP device à la iPod Touch.
Instead of car I recommend stop being a fat burger and ride a bicycle, and for telescreen I recommend not having one. For monitors, there's not much choice if you need quality. Go to panelook.com and look up panels, buy a controller board from china, assemble your own. Flat panel TVs are basically the same except modern ones have additional computer inside which compromises their longevity. If you're intended on doing Thinkpad-tier component drop-in ""repairs"", then what I have just described should be sufficient. Or just buy Dell/Eizo/LG from office clearing, they'll work for another 10 years after you replace the backlight.

Maybe if Google gets blasted by public for this move negatively impacting poor people isolating them and potentially making them lose their job during a pandemic they will reverse the decision. It costs money to have a phone and service and money to buy a thumb drive to use as a key which also cant be done on phones if they happen to have a phone and no service. People may not care about privacy but they will go on about that. Extra outrage points if you make it a racial issue how it will disproportionately effect POC since a lot of people dont really give a soykaf about poor people. Worth a shot. Get some "woke" Twitter influencer on it or something to manipulate the masses into caring about something they should have to begin with

Math Matt · 2021-12-09 06:49

Sorry dude, in order to mine bitcoin you have to do some expensive soykaf and you have to buy a 12k asic computer to get 10$ worth of bitcoin in several months (and don't forget your electricity bill)
Best you can do is download a monero wallet and a mining script for your CPU (must be a good/powerful), you can download Feather wallet for monero and from there you can create a wallet and download the script from within the app
Monero is better that bitcoin anyways in term of privacy/ anonymity and it's cheaper, faster and easier to use and mine
And don't pretend that you have nothing of value to hide, because if that was true you wouldn't be on this board

Hello Lain.
So basically I was spraying my PSU fan with some WD-40 cause it was buzzing loud as fuarrrk, when I reconnected everything, my hdd suddenly stopped working, at first it was making weird noises but my pc was detecting it fully, then after couple restarts it started showing "ata1: device not ready" or something like this and heads started clicking quietly, my bios wasn't detecting anything, couple restarts later I heard the heads wasn't going back to where it should be (was just flopping all over the drive when I shaked it) opened up the drive (some retards on teh nets say it is a death sentence for hdd cause specs of dust but my room isnt a fuarrrking desert) and snapped the heads back into its "starting" place (without touching the platter ofc), it started going quieter and returning to its starting position after turning off, but still nothing, still clicking quietly, opened it the second time and noticed that there is a tiny, like 2 mm scratch on the platter, closed it and after couple restarts and stuff I noticed that the chipset is overheating
so...
yeah...
am I fuarrrked totally or should I try buying the same exact model and try replacing the chipset? (costs like 5$ on ebay)
been really depressed because of it, I feel like I lost everything that made me valuable as a person
how true could it be?
I'm dying here

AOSP is not enough that's why lineage builds come into play but even Lineage builds are never enough as they also do not audit their stuff.
Your install might still probably phone to google like the wifi/data/gps/captiveportal connectivitychecks and some apps still have certain features.
It's safe in terms of privacy ONLY if you have SELinux set to enforcing and if it's not set to enforcing (disabled/permissive) then any app can literally have access over your packets down to the network level so any app can know you browse lainchan even if you use another app.
The last of your worries is the unsafe implementation of clipboard which after my constant blabbering online they finally decided to do something about it (maybe just a feature to let users know who accesse clips) on android 12 but I don't think it's still that secure as clipboard data can still leak across apps especially malicious ones like proprietary social network/botnet/tracking apps.
You can however disable certain apps of access with app ops command or app, but it's tricky for novice to do. And install the "potentially malicious" apps over Shelter to isolate their storage and access over other apps (such as app enumerating and fingerprinting which they will probably never address but let's just hope).
Stop buying meme phones though, it's not worth it and it's not sustainable and it's trash market.
Google can literally decide and let us all have unlocked bootloaders and allow people to truly have open source control over phones but they decided otherwise to "protect from malicious tampering by signing boot" and what happened is a dead market of ejunk comprised of phones which while are "capable enough" for modern computing and more powerful than a literal atom netbook 8 years ago, they decided it's not okay to promote the spirit of open source and AOSP is literally the biggest cu*k of the entire world of open source while being the most unsustainable thing to ever happen in the planet. Stop buying memephones with memeOS, I hope lineageos just dies and one day all their efforts are to be put somewhere else better which is a platform that doesn't lock down people into junk bricks with life span less than 5 years and work on actual linux mainline devices.
Just think about it, phones could have been just as good as a PC in terms of security and updates but they're not going that route or at least they're trying to avoid that route to maximize profit and then there's a horde of these literal botnet-infected android slodge filling the internet which are somehow part of these massive DOS attacks because locking down a phone was a good idea (?), one would argue "it's open source" but that's just the ideal, not in practice or reality, it's all unsustainable soykaf called smartphone which is the worst to ever happen in society and they're not stopping at that, it's the literal most sophisticated tracker and wiretap machine on everyone's pocket, including your loved ones so enjoy that Present Day, Present Time! AHAHAHAHAHA!

Anything that has a radio on it can be triangulated by something as easy to do as a DIY school project and if we go by that logic it's the same way they implement covid bluetooth/wifi beacons and add to that the extensive list/database containing all of the captured MAC addresses which are also the cornerstone of covid beacons / exposure notification.
An the fact that rooting is dead makes it impossible to spoof location data, AND the fact that your phone has proprietary wifi/bt drivers means it can turn on bluetooth and wifi every 66.6 days to inform the nearest database for your location update. Cellular network is just the topping in the ice cream, if a phone emits radio it phones its location quite literally and there's no way around that, and even worse today with the prevalence of exposure-activated phones so they just report your current unique MAC identifier to the latest database for who knows what they're going to use with. Literally an assassins wet dream I would say Present Day, Present Time! AHAHAHAHAHA!

Are the specs on a wall wart maximums or constants? If I plug a device that wants 0.5 amps into a wart that says 1 amp, will it burn out (and the same for volts)?
Sabo Engle · 2021-12-15 13:49

Afaik typically the device you are plugging in will draw as much current as it needs. So if it needs 500mA it won't pull 1A and fry your circuit. You may want someone else to answer though as I am not an expert by any means. But I do this a lot with no issues yet. Also make sure the polarity is matched c+ or c- theres a label on the DC wall wart and the device ideally

What are subnet masks used for? I know that a subnet is a fraction of a VLAN, and each VLAN has a unique number representing it, (e.g. 192.168.1.2, 1 is the subnet) but I simply do not understand how ANDing an IP with a subnet mask helps in.
inb4 https://www.guru99.com/subnetting-subnet-mask.html#3
>A subnet mask is a 32 bits address used to distinguish between a network address and a host address in IP address. A subnet mask identifies which part of an IP address is the network address and the host address.
Is not the first two bytes always representing the VLAN, and the last two representing the machine?

Question 1: is this thread for tech support?
Question 2:
What *Nix's do you think are most suitable for a bootable USB "toolbox" system?
If the awnser to question #1 is "yes":
openBSD installed on a USB drive took almost an hour to get to a login prompt, and takes just under a minute to several minutes to get to asking for a password after I input a username for logon. I know openBSD is not intended to be as fast as other OS's, but this is clearly something not working correctly, it even ran slightly faster when I tried booting my USB in qemu instead of booting it natively.
It is openBSD 7.0 for the i386, there may be some driver issues, however they are related to more advanced features such as networking, and I do not know how they can cause such a dramatic slowdown, so i think something else is broken as well.
What can cause this sort of issue?

IIRC standard and third party Android backup software backs up /data partition at most which is sufficient to preserve all passwords, certificates and application data, it can't literally make full image of whole flash memory drive because most of it: kernel, bootloader, recovery image are inaccessible from user account interface and would be useless on any other device unless it's exact same model with few caveats. Android-based ARM devices are not like Wintel-IBM-X86 compatible computers with better backward-forward compatibility between operating systems and standardized hardware.
Do you want to change a device to identical or newer one because it shows signs of hardware failure or some other obsoletion?
a) You could hypothetically make a dump of the flash chip with special IC reader used at repair shops and overwrite it byte-by byte on identical phone model's flash memory, however I am not sure if that's gonna work because when /data partition is encrypted as it usually is, the decryption keys are stored in TPM-like memory inside SoC on your first phone.
Additionally, if you transplant the flash memory IC itself to identical phone on post-2016 Qualcomm-based devices, first phone's flash IC wouldn't work with second phone's SoC processor since each SoC and flash chip are locked-in to each other at hardware level. When you change flash memory, you change the SoC and vice-versa. User data nowadays is assumed to be always backed up to external cloud/computer, and lower level operating system components: bootloader, recovery, kernel being non-user-serviceable but identical and provided through manufacturer channels are written by repair technician with flashing utility/hardware, then user data is restored from user interface of Android OS on top of partition encrypted on first boot.
b) My wild guess is that you have to only transfer application data for whatsapp from one device to another without concerns about hardware, since this is a standard backup/profile migration procedure. I assume it does contain all cryptographic keys for whatsapp identity, at most you would have to spoof the hardware data like MAC address when launching anew (I've read somewhere that this is how Whatsapp identified devices, but again I could be wrong in regards to current affairs).
c) Please elaborate why you can't simply receive a new code/scan QR to set up on another device and how does landline have anything to do with that.

I need to enter the UEFI, but booting into UEFI just shows a black screen. I'm pretty sure it's not a monitor issue, so my only option now seems to be to clear the CMOS.
The motherboard manufacturer's instructions on clearing the CMOS are absurdly unclear, which wouldn't be a problem (there's much better explanations online), except for the fact that they explicitly say to NOT unplug the power cord. Common sense (as well as all other instructions online) dictate the complete opposite - to unplug the power cord.
And what the fuarrrk is step #1 supposed to be implying - why is S5 in parentheses? S5 means a full shutdown, which I obviously would've done beforehand.

What about removing and reinserting the battery instead? It's not listed in this manual, but other guides list it as an option. There's shouldn't be reasons for that to either:

You probably don't need to read the whole story, I have a fairly simple question at the end:
>bought an HDD (WD Black 6TB), but kept it in a cabinet unused for two years
>recently formatted it into 3 x 2TB partitions
>tried "copying" an old 2TB HDD onto one of the new partitions with Macrium
>Macrium gave no errors and everything went quietly, but the end result was inaccessible: even after a lengthy chkdsk "repair" suggested by Windows, the cloned partition was still unusable
>there were likely several reasons for it to be inaccessible: the old 2TB HDD was nearly full, the allocation unit size for the two partitions was different (old was 4k, new partition was 64k), and the old HDD was a "dynamic disk" while the new HDD was a "basic disk" (which meant "cloning" was unavailable in Macrium and i had to use "copying" instead)
>none of this was the real issue though: during the 24+ hr. chkdsk "repair" of the failed clone, the HDD made god-awful grinding noises. it was mainly during the 30+ min. index verification/repair, which sounded like someone sharpening a rusty shovel
>afterwards, i ran smartctlshort tests which showed no errors, but the SMART attributes likely don't look good
>those smartctl short tests also cause bursts of awful grinding noises - although the HDD is completely quiet at all other times, even while reading/writing files
So my question is how good or bad these SMART attributes really are, as I really distrust the noises the HDD makes during those tests, and would like to have as much justification to replace it while it's still under warranty.

What's the real difference between the two? I'm sure W11 probably has more bloatware, spyware (I call it as I see it), and maybe a few new admin and server tools, but the UI is still basically the same and 11 is just a remasked 10. What's worth upgrading to 11 if you're comfortable on 10?

Chan Siu Ming · 2022-02-07 08:21

The short and long tests didn't show any errors, but it was all the noises that worried me.
My much older and worn-out HDDs don't make a single noise during chkdsk or smartctl, or while reading/writing. Never before have I had any tests make an HDD sound like a medieval sword sharpener's workshop - let alone an HDD which has never seen any usage.
Furthermore, after 30+ minutes of seriously intense grinding during chkdsk, I strongly suspect that that's affected its' lifespan somehow. I plan to use this HDD (or a replacement) for a long time, and for important soykaf, so I don't want to ignore anything like this from the beginning.
I misspoke when I said it was completely quiet now - whereas it used to be, after that chkdsk procedure the HDD occasionally makes very short and very subtle scraping noises. And they're longer, louder, and more frequent when I'm writing files.
Honestly, this has all worried me enough to look for as many excuses to get a replacement at this point.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you're refering to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called Linux, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project.
There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine's resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called Linux distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux!
Cypher · 2022-02-19 23:39

"I use Linux as my operating system," I state proudly to the unkempt, bearded man. He swivels around in his desk chair with a devilish gleam in his eyes, ready to mansplain with extreme precision. "Actually", he says with a grin, "Linux is just the kernel. You use GNU+Linux!' I don't miss a beat and reply with a smirk, "I use Alpine, a distro that doesn't include the GNU Coreutils, or any other GNU code. It's Linux, but it's not GNU+Linux."
The smile quickly drops from the man's face. His body begins convulsing and he foams at the mouth and drops to the floor with a sickly thud. As he writhes around he screams "I-IT WAS COMPILED WITH GCC! THAT MEANS IT'S STILL GNU!" Coolly, I reply "If windows were compiled with GCC, would that make it GNU?" I interrupt his response with "-and work is being made on the kernel to make it more compiler-agnostic. Even if you were correct, you won't be for long."
With a sickly wheeze, the last of the man's life is ejected from his body. He lies on the floor, cold and limp. I've womansplained him to death.

Although I use Tor to access some web sites, I'm not really into alternative networks nor I understand much about computer networks in general. So I have a couple of questions related to these topics.
1. In Russia Tor only works through bridges. Which actions of russian cyber-gendarmes can make it go offline for russian users completely? How can a user counteract these actions?
2. Also, could you please recommend some fault-tolerant means of "friend-to-friend" internet communication? I'm considering teaching my computer illiterate friends how to use tox or Retroshare over Tor right now. But maybe should I try setting up Retroshare over i2p with i2pd? One american cop said that i2p is harder to block than Tor.

Only complete ban of all bridges. But people working in goverment are not that technologically advanced or interested in doing this.

Only if Tor team creates some new ways of counterattacking. Or people will start using VPN services that are still working, but most of them get derezzed every month or so.

int *a is a valid C declaration describing a pointer to an integer named a .
The int * part declares a type, and the a part a name.
When used outside of a declaration, * means dereference a pointer.
In this case, a subsequent statement *a would evaluate to the integer that a points to.

No. You could try https://github.com/Sycnex/Windows10Debloater but it can be just snakeoil.
It debatable whether you can even block the telemetry botnet because windows is proprietary software: https://www.gnu.org/proprietary/proprietary.html

>I'm little bit tired(bored) of Linux's flavor, So I just decide to go back to Windows temporarily.
Why?
Try switching the WM (https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Window_manager#List_of_window_managers) and ricing it. Try another distro, like Slackware, CRUX, Gentoo or GNU Guix system. Or dual-boot windows and GNU/Linux (mainly useful for games that won't run using Wine or Proton). Find something worthwhile to do, like writing programs or contributing to FOSS projects.
If you can't program yet, I recommend you learn Lua (https://www.lua.org/pil/contents.html) or something.

Not reply, but used that script before. It does help to make space and remove stuff you don't need, but I wouldn't say it helps much in privacy department. It disables certain services related to telemetry, which is nice, but I think at some update, M$ just decided to fuarrrk with the related services and re-enabled some of them.

It's a chinese fake copy of a higher end samsung phone. Touché, chinaman, touché.
To the point, obviously I don't trust anything preinstalled onto it. But it has a 10-core MediaTek Dimensity 1000 in it, and it's free tech. Could one nuke the current install and put on a fresh android? Or just give it a health check on how cyberhumped it is?

Needs to be more specific lain. You need to find out the issue to fix it. Could a filesystem problem. Could be a software bug.
Suggestion: make another clip file and fill it with colors, then open a hexdump of your existing clip file and the new clip file and see if any evident data loss occurred.

You can use a LiveUSB, like SystemRescueCD (https://www.system-rescue.org/), to use gparted to resize a partition. But the free space has to be in the right position (right next to the Mint partition). By "right next to the Mint partition" I mean that if Mint is in partition 2, you can shrink partition 1 or 3 (but not 4) to create more space for Mint's partition. You can get around this limitation by just shrinking a partition and then creating a new partition (using that newly created free space) and then mounting it somewhere (meaning basically anywhere you wish).

>some retards on teh nets say it is a death sentence for hdd
That's not always true. I've had 2.5" HDD "click" on me for several months (click click click), I left it unused for a long while until I tried it again and it started working normally ever since.
I guess what happened was the HDD wasn't getting enough power.
Issues can happen when capacitors are slightly degraded out of old age and the wattage is lacking to power up every components, it's the same thing that causes old gaming laptops to shut off when there's 80-100% load (the gpu requiring power that it cannot obtain, forcing shutdown when the mobo detects voltage drop on some other components).
Another experience I've had was external HDD clicking, as it turns out the USB3.0 cable had poor contacts (possibly corrosion also) it would make the HDD click and good thing is I had a bunch of spare cables. Another is on a laptop I had (quite old) which wouldn't power external HDD properly since the USB port was dead. I knew this since a USB LED wouldn't light up properly and keeps getting dim at certain equal and random intervals.
One more thing, I had a external HDD (superspeed) that got infested with bugs, there were eggs and stuff inside when I checked it open, it was clicking and showed errors on my kernel logs and it even overheat (due to short) when I plugged it in at first - I didn't know there's those critters in there, it turns out the moisture these ants had was what made it refuse to work, I just cleaned it up and did the rice/silica trick and it had no issues running after that.
>when I reconnected everything, my hdd suddenly stopped working
The issue could also be that there's static/electric charge when you touched your stuff which caused it to gain charge somewhere it shouldn't causing the voltage irregularities. My advice to others is don't try opening the HDD yet if it clicks. Just leave it be or do the discharge trick (remove battery and rtc battery, hold power button for minutes - if you use this method while on linux this will reset your EFI entries, mind you), check for insects or if ants are getting out the "drive hole", otherwise you start removing components from the computer itself, only use 1 ram stick, and free other SATA ports (like optical drive) to conserve power assuming your PSU/capacitors were degraded from old age.
When the clicks are quiet and it's getting it's usually lacking in power or there is a short somewhere (like on the ants thing) and there may also be some stuff underneath pic related (usually if a drive is old, there's a chance that the contacts have corroded due to exposure to moisture or being unused, I usually scratch that corrosion off, same thing I do with handling old age RAM).
Junichi Fujiwara · 2022-04-11 07:14

There's also ways to make a "clicking" HDD still work. Usually the problem is when the platters spin has problems due to misalignment, or maybe due to lack of power, this varies by manufacturer but you should put jumper over these parts, there are modes like spread-spectrum clocking (SSC) and reduced power spinup (RPC), I recommend the latter if the HDD supports it, this would make the HDD run on slower/less wattage and it's possible to recover the stuff when that happens. Other manufacturers can extract data over those pins, there's really no standard for these pins but most of them have documentation somewhere.
Another thing is some drives (assuming it doesn't have enough damage to the point the motherboard/PC/USB port decides to restart the device driver) SSD/HDDs can self-recover by just letting them get powered and running, some advice removing the data lanes of the SATA and just leave the power lanes, this helps some drives that had bad sectors that cannot be fixed in the software level (unmountable) by letting the firmware do its own thing, it must stay powered on for about 3-10 or more hours without any attempt to mount the drive (in some cases, you just let your PC sit on the bios menu for a long time).

What is a good way of not having to do a chkdsk every time I want to shrink the C partition of a windows install? The disk is fine, the partition is clean and shows no errors, but I can't shrink it until I do a full chkdsk /f /r /x of the whole 2tb cianigger drive.

Auslogics Disk Defrag is my goto defragger before I shrink system drives.
I don't recommend shrinking the partition it with that program though. You must shrink it with the built-in disk management tool of windows since everything else can corrupt it (including Linux disk partition tools). The thing is windows' defrag tool is kinda bad or at least it doesn't actually defrag them properly. Do not use any other partition manager for windows other than the built-in tool.
The things preventing you to shrink are namely:
>system restore point
you need to delete and disable if it's in the way of the white space needed to be shrinked
>hyberfil.sys and pagefile.sys
it's easily removed by disabling them on settings, although you may need to restart or delete them manually sometimes when they don't go away
>disable hybridboot and fastboot
usually adds some system files on disk
>master file table / $MFT
usually the ones in the way are backups placed around the drives (in case the file table gets corrupted, the backup remains) it usually gets in the way of the shrink but you can shrink 2x or 3x to the maximum available then do restarts and it might go away.
When it didn't go away ($MFTMirr), I just shrunk a drive using a third party shrinker destroying that "master file table mirror" aka $MFTMirr and it didn't corrupt anything (although I don't recommend this if you have no backups and don't corrupt the $MFT, mirrors are okay to destroy I guess but it's still unsafe).

There are moments I need to clone pcs fast, and the easiest thing I get to boot on anything is a linux usb, but I'll try the page and hiberfile remove next time
Normally the stuff isn't on bad drives or partitions, it just makes me run the chkdsk no matter what and when the drive is 1-2 terabytes with 100 gigs of data including windows in that, and I am putting the whole thing in a 256 gig ssd I don't want to be fuarrrking around and trying to shrink it or hope the cloning software we pay for stalls on pagefile or some other sysfile. Or, just won't fuarrrking boot.
When stuff is bad I run the chkdsk but usually I just want the data off as quick as possible since I don't want to even try to save the bad drive I just want it gone.
>mft
Is that kept at the beginning or end of the filesystem/partition? Because when I try to shrink from GPARTED I usually just try to slice off one or two gigs so I can keep ntfs from saying that the 112 gig image I cloned to a 233 gig partition is only 112 gigs. Or is there a more efficient way to fix that problem?

>Is that kept at the beginning or end of the filesystem/partition
It's kept everywhere, like say you have 500gb and has 1x $MFT and 4x $MFTMirr, every 100gb there's a MFT and you cannot shrink if it's in the way (at least windows won't let you until it's been settled).
There's also a thing with drives write cache so you need to do a proper shutdown or defrag otherwise you'll lose data from temporary MFT (I don't remember but there's like $MFTMirrTmp I think) assuming the files were written temporarily in those specific areas or the things needed to be on $MFT is placed somewhere. Other thing is if the drive already had reallocated sectors, it's possible that the $MFT is placed on multiple places (NTFS is really resilient, just in case more sectors get corrupted)
>>58855
Not FUD. Gparted can and will make you lose data back then. Linux only recently got proper NTFS support from paragon's drivers. It used to ignore and just slice-up the $MFTs while it's still "fine" it's a gamble, your drive might be lucky but some would lose data or may not even boot anymore (something to do with mappings and boot integrity, if you did this to vista or sp0 win7 your NTFS may destroy itself upon next mount). It's searchable
I still don't recommend it since last I saw even KDE partition manager still uses the old NTFS driver.
There's also a thing where the NTFS partition becomes unmountable when it has dirty bit set in place after a bad shutdown (which needs to be mounted by Windows for disk checking) and some poorly written disk managers may ignore it, and again would destroy the NTFS partition table (in which case you'll need to use testdisk to recover it, otherwise say goodbye to your data).

i need to implement a queue for my SIP code
i was thinking of using circular buffers but this wikipedia page has fudded me out
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queue_(abstract_data_type)
>The simple trick of turning the array into a closed circle and letting the head and tail drift around endlessly in that circle makes it unnecessary to ever move items stored in the array. If n is the size of the array, then computing indices modulo n will turn the array into a circle. This is still the conceptually simplest way to construct a queue in a high-level language, but it does admittedly slow things down a little, because the array indices must be compared to zero and the array size, which is comparable to the time taken to check whether an array index is out of bounds, which some languages do, but this will certainly be the method of choice for a quick and dirty implementation
so it seems i have implemented bounds checking, which is slow. C specifically has no bounds checking for a reason! how do i fix this?

You can use a doubly-linked list instead but personally I take issue with that blurb. A simple integer comparison is not going to be a bottleneck. The bigger issue with using an array is that you'll have to copy the array into a larger new array whenever the queue grows too large for its current array.

I would have recommended wxWidgets but there aren't bindings for C# (?)
However, there is QT (Qml.Net or QtSharp) and Gtk#. But as far as I know, you need to make the program FOSS if you use QT, unless you pay for a license. GTK uses LGPL.

Thanks for the reply.
C# is not a strict requirement, I am willing to use other languages.
I used Qt in the past (maybe 10 years ago) with C++, at that time it used LGPL for most libraries, so you could dynamic link to the libraries and keep it closed.
These programs are for internal use only, so I guess I could simply make it GPL, static link and not actively distribute it.

Disk checking is best done with windows tools or maybe if you could, pass it over wine or some VM.
There are times when NTFS gets flagged dirty (when plugged in dvd or tv) and linux tools do nothing but even worsen it.
The last I tried linux's native NTFS-3G chkdsk on a hard drive, it didn't go well and destroyed the partition table. Good thing testdisk could revert that somehow.
