Dystopia Reading List

Unnamed · 2021-11-06 20:38
With the growing trend of silicon valley companies moving to create a metaverse, the rising surveillance state, the police state, a lack of care for the truth over convenience and personal narratives, the disintegration of purpose, closed-source corporate brain chips, mandatory ID chips, wage cage and robotic displacement, and other things becoming a reality I think it's important that we all get ourselves read before people decide to do with books and information what they did in fahrenheit 481. So let's make a thread to share books about dystopias that we might have to prepare for, and let's hope that hope is not vanity. I'll start: 1984 Fahrenheit 481 Brave New World Snow Crash
Erik Johansson · 2021-11-06 23:23
>>53206 Honestly, the thing about dystopian fiction is that it doesn't really have a resolution. I don't need to read it to know things are bad. I can just look outside if I want that. These books don't offer anything beyond that, and the best you can prepare for with them is perhaps a few more years before you will be sucked into the machine. What we need is some stories on how to make the world a better place instead of how to sustain yourself in a terrible one. Because dystopian fiction always to me end in a sad conclusion that's also more of a internalized belief than truth: the world is terrible but it's the best there could be. So what is required is something that tells how things can change for the better said in a mature and wise way, the same way a good theraphist can help you organize your emotions and make the unecessarily internalized pain that stops you from enjoying life be lifted from your shoulders.

>>53222 I guess I was being a bit pessimistic. Maybe what we need right now is hope, and ideas on how things can get better. It's not good for our health to always focus on the negative, I was just hoping to find more dystopian novels to read and perhaps somehow that will make me feel more prepared for the storm ahead.

>>53222 What I'm saying with >>53224 is that anything to help with these down feelings and bad forecast are more than welcome. I need hope, we all do.

"""Dystopian""" fiction is public conditioning and hypernormalization of the proposed changes. Also known as Overton window. Lainchan is prime example of this thinking, all these threads: >oh boy oh boy I can't wait to live in le cyberpunk dystopia it's so cool just like in my corporate TV shows!
Hacker · 2021-11-08 04:00
>>53242 You could maybe say that about more recent things but I don't think this is true of all dystopian fiction.
Tyrell Wellick · 2021-11-15 08:22
>>53206 >Dystopia Snowcrash looking more and more like a welcome alternative to the centralized authoritarian pseudo democracies. At least there'd be some power balance between warring corpo states instead of one de-facto ruler. If you want some interesting depictions of Virtual Reality and don't mind veering off into the fantasy realm I can recommend Dead Boys and Ian Banks' Feersum Endjinn. I'm wondering if there are any recommendations for hard scifi depictions of VR in literature? >>53242 It's still a niche culture, also nothing new about misfits wanting for change of the current power structure. If you have can elaborate on that point I'd be happy to indulge you, but so far I coup you with the YT conspirationists.
Drifter · 2021-11-15 08:29
Aurora is probably the most "soft dystopia" book I've read in a while. Basically imagine the world if Elon Musk and his ilk were totally successful in their utopian vision of the future... what then?
Mario Rossi · 2021-11-15 08:59
For the record the "wage cage" actually was for the safety of Amazon warehouse employees. All the fuss over it online prevented an important safety for them being that they work along side heavy machinery now they are still out there getting injured and dying in one of the most hazardous work environments out there.

>>53242 Most cyberpunk media is warning against the dystopia and not pretty painting it, unlike industry, elites and gov. People here probably like the aspect of being a rebel and going against the man, also using technology, but i dont think anyone in their right minds would support the powers that be. Also lots of trolling, irony and bad jokes.

>>53242 Snatched this ebin reddit pic from coroonabiirusii thread. Illustrates the point. Remember, it's middle school reading. All around the world. If not read, it's ingested through audiovisual culture. Dystopia-dystopia-dystopia. Is all we know about, is all we dream about. Last three fiction books I read were dystopias. The non-fiction ones were about building dystopias. I listen to dystopian music and watch dystopian films. I post on dystopian forums, my life is not what it seems.

>>53559 >YT conspirationists There are no more YT conspirationists, they have been deplatformed from every mainstream platform & some of them have been derezzed from using payment processors, membership platforms like patreon & gofundme etc also some of them have been derezzed from fuarrrking LinkedIn. You probably haven't watched any YT conspirationists or only know of them from those crazy clips of Alex Jones ranting about interdimentional aliens or some bread tuber debunking flat earthers. The definition of Conspiracy theory today is so ill defined that anyone challenging any mainstream narrative can be called a conspiracy theorist, from GMO's,Corrupt Politicans,Banking and interdimentional space aliens all grouped together with an umbrella term "conspiracy". CIA Coined the Term “Conspiracy Theory” in 1967 To Deter Criticism of Warren Commission and in 2021 it is used to deter criticism of any power structure as the negative connotations (right-wing troll,Qanon follower,Insane etc) undermine any discussion of topics deemed taboo by the ruling power. What >>53242 is saying >"""Dystopian""" fiction is public conditioning and hypernormalization of the proposed changes. Is called Predictive programming, it is a subtle form of psychological conditioning provided by the media to acquaint the public with planned societal changes to be implemented by our leaders. If and when these changes are put through, the public will already be familiarized with them and will accept them as natural progressions, thus lessening possible public resistance and commotion. Or you could just call it propaganda for concepts, ideas, technologies, etc that are being developed & will be deployed sometime in the future, for example Minority Report's predictive policing, which is a real thing today as the technology to do so is available, so was the writer Philip K. Dick in on it ? I dont know but it could be a possibility knowing the history of Hollywood & its connections with intelligence agencies, the military & the occult https://www.independent.co.uk/voices/hollywood-cia-washington-dc-films-fbi-24-intervening-close-relationship-a7918191.html Also read The Cultural Cold War by Frances Stonor Saunders. But this doesn't prove predictive propaganda as I cant objectively prove Philip K. Dick had some insider knowledge about predictive policing in 2001-2002 when the movie came out .But Aldous Huxley had the insider knowledge about the dystopic societies he described in his books as his brother was a prominent eugenicist (who coined the term transhumanism) also look for his lectures on YT (The Ultimite Revolution) & Also look into the Fabian Society & its members like H. G. Wells.

Read Ready Player One. Not because it's a good book (it's not), but because it's what they're reading, too.

>>53206 >The Maddaddam Trilogy Driving by a fast food restaurant that was advertising what appeared to be synthetic chicken brought this book to mind. Its partial a post-cyberpunk novel because the cyberpunk character "fixes" the world by creating transhumanist superhumans in his ideal form, then creating a super ebola STD to reduce the human population for the sake of the environment to preserve his superhumans and then theres a bunch of lo-tech/lo-life hippies who sing about trees n'sheit while surrounded by a cyberpunk dystopia >>53222 What if you just like to wallow in suffering? >>53593 I remember reading seeing 1984 on my English teachers desk and when I started talking to her about it she said it was unfortunate that almost none of the students understand the central message. I've like dystopian books because they make you appreciate how good you have it now, and if you really think about them, it gives you reason to want to preserve what you have now or improve it instead of letting society fall into the story. Dystopian stories became popularized because of the escapism and doom and gloom foreshadowing of 2008-9 >>53632 Did it involve dragons fuarrrking cars?

I highly recommend "The Windup Girl", or the collection of short stories in the same universe "Pump Six and Other Stories". While Snow Crash et. al. prefigured the world we live in today, The Windup Girl shows where we'll be in another 30 years. I guess it runs with the idea that the dystopia's already here, it's just not evenly distributed yet.
