dead internet
Bob Arctor · 2021-11-06 01:01
anons i come looking for the knowledge you migth poses on the chances of the internet being dead since the ending of 2016 and beginning of 2017. the possibility of bots stearing public opinions on imageboards, reddit, facebook and other hubs for public opinion. what are the chances of this being truth and to what extend?
H.R. Giger · 2021-11-06 01:29
That video is a nice way to waste bandwidth compared to the screenshot.
I could swear there was already a thread on Lainchan for this; I thought it was in /zzz/, but haven't found it.

Bots and ai are more advanced and widespread than we are lead to believe, no doubt there are crawlers here, just to feed the ai data.
I dont think writing on lainchan serves any purpose for bots and most other chans are even worse off.
Its no secret facebook and co have deployed bots and ai of the worst kind on their places, no doubt most of it is machine controlled.
Minor places are just too insignificant to be of any value.

>Minor places are just too insignificant to be of any value.
That kind of thinking doesn't apply when most imageboards use the same software and similar input fields and the work required is insignificant.

I didnt take that into account, in that case yes you are correctomundo.
If there is an easy solution its obviously gonna be put in the tool shed, i just dont see what you can really get out of chans other than how to soykaf up your platform.

I think the fact that there's wide spread bot manipulation is a bit of an open secret, as in anyone with a brain knows it's true. It certainly ramped up in 2016 but it was likely there beforehand. Here's a good video series on it.

There were some pretty good threads on 4chan's /x/ a while back about dead internet theory too, I would try and find those archives if you can.

I wouldn't trust people on 4chan. It would be easy enough to pretend to be a bot or make a bot with the intent of the bot either being found out or intentionally have bad arguments for something the bot creator is opposed to. So the intent of a bot isn't always clear if they are indeed bots.

Lainchan's server robot thinks I am trying to spam because I posted archive link of your third image threadshot:
https://archive.4plebs.org/[politics_board]/thread/252885400/
Paid human "trolls" who inflate discussions and copy pasting robots on fast-moving forums (twitter bots and /b/ boards with 1:1 full copypasta threads or generic OP posts) are old news, but if we apply Pareto principle, and it's derivative, 1% rule [0] to all public discussions held on any kind of Internet forum, it would become obvious that most people might read, but never participate in any of discussions giving strong advantage to actors with access to automation, monetary incentive, or some sort of mental predisposition ("insanity", "boredom", fan club wars) to inflate published opinions supporting their cause.
"Normal" people ether don't care, or too anxious to participate or add anything of value to public forums. In this sense the internet is indeed "dead" as only small percentage of it's users operate outside of read-only mode. However, if we take close-personal communication, how much signal to noise ratio is exchanged across personal messaging systems, closed forums, chatrooms, and so on? Silly memes, emoticons, stickers, voice messages, glittery animated postcards shuffled around these chatrooms to be never read, are real humans themselves operate on consciousness levels not higher than a flood spam bot? Picture strongly related [1]. I have mentioned literal bots on fast-moving forums above, but have to comment on human bots in that context as well: people who repost popular images on reddit for upvotes, people who parrot trendy opinions on twitter, people who create "post your ex", digit roulette threads on chans, and so on. These are sources trivially observable and confirmable, I can no longer tell whether person on that end of the wire is this dumb or just a computer program.

It's worth noting that this theory gets mentioned on altchans often and all the "proof" of it is common between threads, and often just trolls trolling trolls.
It's almost as if these threads are being automatically posted.

Forgot to add, absolutely typical highly voted comments on almost any youtube video with view counts above 100k. They follow few templates and usually revolve around retelling what comment poster (an any other viewer obviously) just witnessed on screen. This is probably more of a social gag, but looks uncanny and robot-like in textual/digital form.

>It would be easy enough to pretend to be a bot or make a bot with the intent of the bot either being found out or intentionally have bad arguments for something the bot creator is opposed to.
For sure this happens, some people are just spiteful. What's more worrying is the bots that you can't detect, that are often indistinguishable from humans. Once you realize this all online discussion becomes untrustworthy.
>So the intent of a bot isn't always clear if they are indeed bots.
Making this more complicated is that there are multiple parties using bots for different things. That said you can track them with enough resources, and militaries and universities around the world are doing this.

If people see a certain pattern they'll often replicated to fit in with the culture. In that way the bots are trying imitate humans so as to get caught, but then the humans are imitating the bots once the bots take control. Art imitates life, and life imitates art as they say.

On a second thought I would have posted a bot-like reply just to troll OP. Probably half of that thread are humans trolling OP. Sometimes I get these urges to post something low-effort when I'm tired of argument or see something provoking, not participating in pointless arguments is even more energy-conserving, some low-inhibition persons might actually pursue. Where does border between roboticism, ironic wit and fully-conscious humanity lie?
It's hard to dilute hard topic discussions and pseudonymous communities centered around hard topic discussions or stricter than average anything goes chan rules. We've had like a dozen threads about "Internet is low quality" on lainchan this year, so far when your interests are video games, cartoons and low effort posting, your communities are of corresponding quality as well.

>Is everyone not thinking as hard for every interaction as I can a robot? Are they an NPC?
I wonder what it is about being on anonymous posting boards that makes you start to believe nobody but you has an internal monologue.
You don't have any more of a grip on what the hell's going on here than anyone else does if you believe the internet's all robots but you haven't pinpointed why you think that, or what you think they're doing. And you definitely don't have a grip on anything if you think that /pοl/ thread is anything but trolls.
Let's be real: do you really care? What are you going to do with that information, round up all the people you think are fully human to preach to them?
I'll be here, eating my steak, while you run yourself ragged over if this is a real post or not.

Robots can not decode patterns on images as good as humans (yet), but humans respond to visual stimuli in similar manner bots have responded to code words in OP post of that thread. A thread on fast-moving board gets more replies if it has image of a character (portraits, anime, frogs), more to female images and erotic(pornographic) content. Threads created without images, with long paragraphs or poorly chosen images get less replies.

You still can identify even advanced bots using Winograd Schema type questions. It basically takes a step beyond the Turing Test to take advantage of how AI cooperate.

That site is amazing, i am surprised that someone made a Vaporwave style site and a small hangout area. I know what you mean though, i have known for a long time that Youtube viewership is fake and that the Algorithms have been making sure we are eternally distracted in our chambers for a long time. But the one thing i would say is that it is a combination of NPC mentality in humans and that somehow interact with Bots or content overall creating an infinite loop for information, money and time.

Good thing I don't care about those communities. What I'm concerned with is mostly politics, and most of the examples in this thread are about that. When there are active attempts by foreign parties to manipulate the general public through bots, that's something to take note of. The example >>53205 here is concerned with the US but it also happens in other countries as well, for example with the UK and Brexit.

Political discussions on internet forums have always been special olimpics competition. Most people are not educated enough to have any valid opinion on this matter, with or without bots public forums will be drowned in low-value posts. I recommend hiding all anglopolitik discussions with keyword script (dollchan or similar), and instead read theory of political movements you are interested in and statistical data of their policy outcomes.

It's more about how it effects wider culture. For example, we can see that the Russian bots leading up to the 2016 US election weren't pushing for a specific party but instead were more just trying to cause chaos (see the PDFs and videos above but to give a tldr: some bots were tweeting BLM stuff and others Trump stuff, trying to be inflammatory to the other side) and it worked. The country is more polarized now than its ever been. That planted a seed that would grow more racism along the general population and would lead to the BLM riots. Even if I don't care about the opinions of the uneducated masses I do care about the election and the riots because they end up effecting me personally.
As a side note obviously the Trump and BLM issues are more complex than that, but the bot interference certainty played a large part.

That was one small private firm pushing silly memes on people to get them to subscribe to their feed so they could spam them with ads. Their activity was completely dwarfed by the astroturfing activities of the actual major candidates' campaigns. Go peddle your US national security state propaganda on a more gullible forum.

I had to unhide your post to see what you had to say, see this is the problem, you let anglopolitik live inside your head rent-free. It's not making your life any better. Use Dollchan script [0][1] to autohide these words:

Bots don't make well researched arguments (and if they did, I'd probably welcome it) - they rely on bandwagon. The idealistic argument is to resist bandwagon, but it's too innate. I don't believe anyone can block all out while letting in logically sound arguments. I've tried.
>The only worth that anyone has ever derived out of conversation on the internet is picking up new topics or avenues to research /on their own/. If you walked away from your enlightening conversation and didn't do any continued reading on the subject and actually just accepted what you learned from that alone, you didn't learn anything, and you're still an idiot.
You're never gonna find serious political discussion online.

Sounds like memex + intelligence amplifier are coming true. Might actually contribute to collective discussion if it suggests items out of band instead of pretending to be a smartass in conversation. Actually, chatroom bots are as old as IRC, why are there still no useful forum bots? (obv. excluding useless r*ddit automods and similar crap).

just read up memex. This is some really cool concept, and it's a shame, that the WWW is used for commercial gibberish more than scientific development and exchange.
about the bot thing: wouldn't a bot need to have some kind of quality control? thing is, a bot can search for structures, keywords, but it cannot deeply analyze content, can it? The human factor would still be present, and i guess that would either require some kind of incentive for the human part, or an extremely selfless group of people, who are in a position where they don't have to worry about their basic needs.
Hitomi · 2021-11-10 00:06
the surface internet is all bot driven. search engines no longer work, you will find copy/paste sites after the first few pages. social media sites are all bot driven, just try writing a script that creates a new account on reddit or facebook, will only take you a few hours at most a day to get working its that easy. video games are all bot driven as well, any game with an online component will be harvested by bots. dont trust anything with a monetary component, bots will be made. dont trust the HTTP protocol, decades of research and billions of dollars invested into crawlers have made the tools too sophisticated and its too easy to traverse and bot any site, including this one. other protocols as well have become infected with bots, IRC has been infected. the bots cant be stopped. if you want to talk to humans on the internet, turring test the people you speak with, the ones that pass exchange gpg keys, this forms the network of confirmed humans, the web of trust.
this post was written by the life internet copy/paste bot. this bot crawls the web to free people from the dead internet.
