Vasya Pupkin · 2021-11-04 22:13
>>53127 Sure. I never learned how to touch type on qwerty. I managed to reach maybe 40 WPM (being generous) with hunt and peck, but every time I tried to learn to type properly, I would fall back into my old habits. Switching to dvorak helped me to start fresh. I have no clue if it's actually faster, but I do find it a lot more comfortable, and it was necessary to erase my poor training. I'm not sure if I'd choose dvorak if I had to do it again, because it does have its drawbacks, but I don't think that another switch would be worth it, and I still think that dvorak is the most comfortable for me. The thing about dvorak is that it's basically unusable if you don't touch type with it. The whole point of the layout is to alternate your hands, so if you try to hunt and peck you'll be going back and forth and it will be very uncomfortable. Basically, dvorak forced me to touch type. The way I learned to use it was by setting it as my only layout (I can't recommend this if you have to use a computer for work, I didn't at the time). At first I was really slow (less than 10 WPM slow). I knew that I didn't want to hunt and peck anymore, so I didn't even bother switching my keycaps around. I simply hit keys until I found what I was looking for. I did my usual forum posting, imageboard posting and irc chatting until I more or less memorised the layout, and then I started training speed. It was rough, but at a certain point, it just clicked. I can't even really remember what it was like not knowing dvorak. I've been using dvorak for around six years now. I get about 80 WPM. I could probably get ~95 if I trained more, but honestly I don't feel like it's necessary. There have been drawbacks. Shortcut keys for copy and paste in particular were annoying until I started using vim (which is actually better on dvorak imo). I find that most shortcuts are pneumonic though, so I don't think it affects it too much. It's also a bit heavy on the middle column of the keyboard for 'I' and 'D', which can be uncomfortable for some people. I also can't really use other people's computers for long periods of time without switching the layout. I'm not much of a gamer, but I know that default keybinds in most games are unusable on dvorak. However, I've been very satisfied with it, and I've never felt a desire to switch back to qwerty, or even to use a layout that's more similar to it, like colemak or norman. I feel like switching layouts all the time would have diminishing returns anyway though. Anyway, that's my blogpost. If you're looking to switch, I would only say to do it if you can't touch type or if you have really bad habits on qwerty. The actual benefits are either negligible in the case of speed, or subjective in the case of comfort. tl;dr I love dvorak and I've gotten a lot of mileage out of it, but it was pretty rough going at first.

KDE has also gotten really lightweight on system resources. It's my go-to choice now when I rehabilitate the old Windows computers of friends and family to Linux. >>53196 >>53189 Unlike bspwm, it manages windows, hotkeys, startup commands, includes a bar and has its own configuration file format instead of using its IPC capabilities. You want hotkeys? sxhkd. Startup commands? .xinitrc/.xprofile. Bar? lemonbar. To elaborate a bit on the IPC thing, bspwm is a true UNIX daemon, doing everything it can via IPC (including window management, except for mouse events), which means that all configuration can be changed at runtime. i3's IPC is for read only stuff like property getting; not to mention that it soykafs on the UNIX philosophy by using a contraption like JSON when it's not needed and can't be parse by standard tools. Get a look at these manpage, to get and idea of the difference in IPC power: https://man.archlinux.org/man/i3-msg.1.en https://man.archlinux.org/man/bspwm.1.en Bspwm even manages to be more powerful (cf external_rules) while being >10 times lighter (tarball size, not even counting the way larger dependency tree).

I rotated my monitor recently. My monitor is 27 inch, that means it's little bit tall when I use it vertical. But it has benefit when reading books, looking source codes and web browsing. But watching videos is kinda suck. Also I recognized I concentrate only 1/2 lower side of this monitor because it too tall to look comfortable. So i think I'm using this wide screen as an 4:3 screen monitor. Anyone using main monitor vetically like me?
藤原純一 · 2022-01-21 15:21
>>55949 I think it's bad ergonomics to have to look up to see the top of your screen. The top should be level with your eyes. If I had a vertical monitor I wouldn't want it to be any more than 17 inches or so vertically. Also, it looks like you have a keyboard-based workflow, but for anyone who uses a mouse, vertical mouse movement is a lot less natural than horizontal, so it's best to minimize vertical space in that case. I do think that monitors should be taller though. I'm thinking of getting a 4:3 or 3:2 screen. My ideal would be 1:1, but they're rare.

>>56618 They're not trolling. They also say that the people in suckless are fascists. Normally, I wouldn't care about the BLM virtue signalling but that's just ridiculous. Really says something about them.

>>56618 one developer got kicked out of the project for saying "tranny" or something in the IRC or mailing-list. he got back after he apologized.

>>56722 Lagrange is quite cool and minimal. It doesn't require much dependency. Only mpg123 on my current Void desktop.
Linda Lee · 2022-02-06 13:15
Damn. My void was died. Thankfully there's a old backup files which are essential configs what I used.
Batou · 2022-02-06 13:43
>>56721 >how do you make your terminal looks like that ? tmux ? No, that's a feature of the wm I'm using, shod. It can tile windows inside a floating window container. Kinda like tmux, but it works with other windows, not only terminals. >and the little menu in the right? That's πmenu: https://github.com/phillbush/pmenu

>>56508 >>56516 you guys are actually retarded. XML is ugly and annoying to write but it sure as fuarrrk is one of the most verbose and readable syntax's out these. does that make it good, in my opinion? hell no.
Cat Mother · 2022-02-07 09:48
>>56728 How can you look at that wallpaper and not want to poke your eyes out?

>>56842 >mullvad-us200 your IP address and browsing history has been logged and reported to the FBI. Mullvad and all other VPNs are compromised and cannot be trusted. Use Tor/I2P instead. >napster OBEY YOUR NAPSTER! NAPSTER!
Erik Johansson · 2022-02-09 21:08
>>56843 i trust mullvad more than my ISP and more than a random tor exit for not getting tracked on daily life activities cause i don't really do anything that is my security model, i am the cloak traffic to prevent the feds from scooping up a VPN entirely because "it's mostly criminal activity" (also captcha > me) if the feds really want me for some reason, i'm fuarrrked anyway :D
Noodle Soup -1/7 · 2022-02-09 21:13
>>56763 Yup, that's the whole point; XML is readable. I don't get why people get scared so easily when they see some verbose language.
Shogun · 2022-02-09 21:38
>>56846 You don't get it. Mullvad is probably sharing all of your traffic with your ISP and every 3-letter agency. All VPNs probably do that.

>>56854 I liked Unity but it was slow on my old laptop, also that yaru theme looks neat.
Naomi Nascimento · 2022-02-11 00:36
>>56854 Unity is quite nice, I just wish it wasn't so hopelessly tied to Ubuntu...
