What would be a good choice for a portable and somewhat discreet usb wifi adapter for long range reception that is also linux compatible? Something that you could take with you and connect to your laptop while sitting on a bench? And what kind of antenna would be ideal in this scenario? Possibly the small Alfa panel antenna?
My guess would be an Alfa, but I notice that their recent models tend to deviate from the "discreet" requirement in favor of multiple antennas and more weight.
Additionally, how would this (connecting from a large distance) work with ac, which tends to work better indoors?

Don't do this bro. Spent like 5 grand on one of these babies they said was 'inux certified. Wasn't. Now I'm poor and have a soykafty useless antenna no one wants to buy. I think I'm gonna kill myself soon.

The AWUS036NH™ if you want the ALFA™ branded one.
Or a BT-N9100 from aliexpress if you want a chinese model.

Is this satire? Hopefully you're just joking but you can get some good external wifi for just $15. Older ones are probably better too.

You can even get actual panel wifi and hide it in your bag although it's not "discreet enough" or maybe make a bag that's actually a panel antenna and you just put the bag over some floor or something.

How's 5ghz with those? Iirc linux doesn't have proper 5ghz support usually.

If range is the goal use 2.4ghz, the 5.8ghz signal offers nothing advantageous and will always dissipate faster than the 2.4ghz signal the AP also emits.

They're single-band, the very idea of long range 5.8ghz wifi is silly.
