Raspberry Pi

Cowboy · 2021-09-30 20:50
Let me be clear, I know what to do with a raspberry pi. However, this year I'm living on university campus rather than commuting, and most of the things that I did on my raspberry pi's (I have one pi 3 and a zero w) were using them as servers (NAS, pihole) or nodes (archiveteam, tor, seedbox) but now that I don't have control over my network this isn't a possibility. So my question is what are some projects I can do with a raspberry pi that I can do offline? Is there a way to make a raspberry pi NAS that does not use a network connection but an ethernet attachment to a PC instead? I'm not interested in any videogame related stuff or maker things that are basically toys.

I set up my pi zero to work as a piratebox, which was pretty cool although when trying it on windows pc's or apple devices it seemed to not stay connected to the network (probably because it can tell there's no internet on the piratebox network) and when they do stay connected they do not redirect you to the piratebox.local webpage. I might work on this in the future myself as the piratebox project has shut down. Something else that I've done with both my pi's is connecting them to my computer either via serial or usb and accessing them remotely. While this is interesting it isn't very useful, as I already have a Linux environment on my desktop and laptop. As far as a temperature sensor or something, I not only already have a thermometor in my room, but I have a TTGO T-display which I have as a weather station on my desk, giving me the temperature outdoors as well as the temperature on the on-board sensor. Whenever someone seems to ask about raspberry pi's on 4chan it goes like "put it up your ass consoomer" but I hope it's clear that I know what to do with a raspberry pi but I am looking for suggestions on other practical uses for these while I'm at university.

>>51420 Instead of searching for a nail to hammer, it would be more beneficial to question why you have a hammer.
Arisu Mizuki · 2021-09-30 21:05
You could start experimenting with platform specific features to ARM Linux, or learn low level ARM programming
Lain Iwakura · 2021-09-30 21:13
>>51421 Did you not read my post? I had nails to hammer before. I had a NAS, I had a pihole. Those actually serve purposes. But now I can't do those things anymore because I'm living on my university campus, and I want to try new things. I didn't buy a raspberry pi then decide what to do with it.
Miho Iwakura · 2021-09-30 21:16
>>51422 I don't know how to do that sort of programming, really. However I do know basic unix languages like shell, sed and awk. Would you mind elaborating about ARM linux and ARM programming? I'll look it up now.

>>51423 The best way to use a RP is to wait for something to come to you. You no longer have a use for it, so I would just put it in a drawer instead of trying to find a use for it. This approach will end most likely with you putting it in the drawer anyway. Still, since you asked, a suggestion would be some auto-dispenser to water plants/feed animals.

What do you mean you don't have control over your network? You can still use one as a pihole, you'll just have to point your DNS to something other than the router's advertised server. Or is it one of those captive portal situations, or even better, do they have client isolation turned on?
Liet Kynes · 2021-10-01 01:51
>>51424 The first difference that comes to mind is twiddling the GPIO pins by writing to memory addresses, akin to how one programs a micro-controller, instead of using RPi libraries. Here is a guide on that: https://pieter-jan.com/node/15 If you wanted to go crazy you could look into RPi bare-metal programming (ASM) or comparing the differences between programs compiled for the RPi vs the PC

>>51418 I'm using my pi3b for mail, web server, xmpp, pi-hole and minidlna. Also sometimes I use as an ftp with a 128g sdcard which in pi. But If you want to do something in pi without internet connection... maybe there's only Programming you can choose. You can use pi for a controller for cctv, door opening detector, alarm, turn on/off the light or anything else. pi has large potential to do.

9front works really well on a raspberry pi, so if you've never fiddled around with it, that could be an interesting experience. Most of the interesting things to do with an RPi are network-based though.

>>51431 Captive portal. I still might be able to use a pihole, but I already have hosts adblocking on my machine through /etc/hosts and a script that updates it with new lists. >>51509 Do you or anyone else know of a way to get a pi to do something like ftp with p2p through an ethernet connection? Online searches were unhelpful. >>51511 Agreed, pi's are in my opinion best suited as low powered headless servers. Really peeves me seeing so many put them in desktop computing situations. I always wanted to try 9front, I'll try this. Might be fun for a few days.
Armitage · 2021-10-04 05:03
>>51580 >Do you or anyone else know of a way to get a pi to do something like ftp with p2p through an ethernet connection? Online searches were unhelpful. Why not? Use ftp or p2p like torrent on pi. pi can do anything that linux can. Using sdcard pi as an stroage, or netdisk etc. I've heard that pi is supported SATA, but I didn't search about that. so I'm not sure.
Donna Hawthorne · 2021-10-04 05:39
>>51581 > I've heard that pi is supported SATA, but I didn't search about that. so I'm not sure The Pi compute module has a PCIe port exposed, so a SATA PCIe host card can be used.

>>51418 If you have any spare cash, just throw up a wireguard instance on a cloud/hosting provider and pivot to another network you do have control of. The only thing wireguard doesn't do by default is obfuscate the fact it's a wireguard encrypted tunnel by default, so you will be subject to deep packet inspection and if your uni's security team discovers it, they could block it. There are some third party implementations that allow this to make it look like encrypted SSL/TLS traffic.

This is a PSA for anyone looking to max performance on their raspberry pi, by the way: arm_freq=1500, arm_freq_min=1500 and gpu_freq=500 gpu_freq_min=500 (if you want to get great performance but not good for rpi health long term) Disabling cfg80211, rfkill, bluetooth, ipv6, mousedev, joydev

>>51418 Nah. Same here. I got rpi3b today. I setup pi-hole first. But I dunno what should I do with this. Searx, invidious, prosody etc are great. But those seems uesless for me cuz I don't use their services much. Maybe this will stuck in the drawer. I got pi with $30. That's not big money, but It little bit worthless how I expected.

I use my pi3 as a SMB server and am programming a instagram bot on it. In the past I set up pivpn to get remote access to my lan and deluge to seed for private trackers, but nowadays I don't really need this things. Since you don't have internet access on it, I guess you could access it via VNC/SSH and use it as you would use a virtual machine

>>51421 they can be tools, but they're also toys. It's just fun to find soykaf to do with these cheap devices >>51418 >>51420 Lain I can see you're just looking to have fun with your device. I use mine as a rubber ducky. It's cool for pranks. Basically you can write simple scripts, save them in the pi, connect the pi to a fool's computer for a few seconds. The code, which is basically input as an HID device (keyboard strokes), will inject and execute, then you unplug the device as if nothing happened. You can change people's wallpapers, write silly things onto notepad, etc. All in a few seconds of plugging it in via USB then unplugging it. >>51819 you're missing the point of it imo. There are tons of things you can do with a pi besides using it as a server. You could even, with some extra hardware, make it open and close your down via wifi. You could try this >>51825 if you can't think of a good use for it, then just set up a pihole and avoid ads on apps and smart TVs. You can also make it a firewall with IPFire. I'm sure that there are other passive functions for the pi but those come to mind.

>>51819 >>51826 >You could even, with some extra hardware, make it open and close your down via wifi. your door* or anything else for that matter since it can function kinda like a micro controller

Didn't see any SBC thread in the catalog so here I am abusing this one. I am looking for a board to use as a small server, for some software tinkering and that doesn't cost too much. what’s the best media center setup for pi? i was looking at kodi / OSMC
Haruyoshi · 2021-11-13 08:10
how about rpi3b+ with ubuntu or fedora for main desktop? I'm considering giveaway my current pc to my little brother, and I move to my rpi which is sleeping in the drawer. I remember fedora minimal requires me little patience even though it's running on cli. So I'm little bit worried about performance on gui session like gnome, xfce or dwm, openbox etc. I want to try OpenBSD, but it doesn't support input method of my native language. Anyway, Which Linux disturbution runs better than fedora with gui in rpi3? I'm using Void with dwm, so I think I try to use void in rpi too, but I'm not sure at my decision.
