How do you have fun on the internet?

Hououin Kyouma · 2021-09-11 18:37
Lainons. I feel like once I've released how much these corps spy on you and collect your data I can't help but not find the internet fun in the way I used to, even knowing that the youtube videos I watch is being considered on how to add me, and even the possibility of the fact simple programs can have key loggers really makes me not comfy. How do you deal with this Lainons? am I just crazy? am i the only one who thinks this?
Agent Jones · 2021-09-11 18:38
>>50511 You're just paranoid, lainon
Terzibashjian · 2021-09-11 18:47
>>50511 I block lot of soykaf by default and only let essential stuff through. Obviously I still am to some degree tracked, but much less than the average person. I don't really consider my YouTube playlist or my browsing history to be that important. Keyloggers so far i know I never have to deal with since 99% of the programs I use are Foss. Maybe discord in browsers logs my stuff, but eh. I am smart enough to not say anything sensitive in there.
Unidentified · 2021-09-11 19:11
>>50511 That sinking feeling you get when you realize the stuff you've used for years is actually malicious is real. The great thing is there's lots of useful information and solutions for reducing the power that corps have over you. To use your Youtube example, frontends like Invidious let you watch and even manage subscriptions without using Google's Javascript or account system. FOSS software is generally pretty trustworthy, on the rare occasions that dev teams have implemented spyware in their programs the community has always called them out (Audacity is a good example) and either provided fixes or started forks of their own (such as Tenacity). Security is a process and you learn new things all the time, when you find out about something you didn't know before you can implement solutions as you see fit, over time your exposure will be less and less. If you're looking for fun online, checking out the various sites on Neocities is a similar experience to the internet of old (we even have our own unofficial webring!). There are also various FOSS games like Minetest with small but dedicated communities, there's a lot of cool servers out there with mods aplenty. It can seem like an insurmountable task sometimes to overcome unjust digital practices, especially when the majority of people don't have the knowledge or even willpower to make changes in their own lives. The thing is the world has no chance of changing if people who are aware of these issues don't make an effort themselves. Just think for a moment that neither of us would be discussing these topics in detail if not for the advocacy of others. We can contribute to change if we try. Regardless of how much impact any one individual has, I think it's a worthy cause to work towards.
Neuromancer · 2021-09-12 05:28
>>50511 No, you're correct. Basically nothing is fun any more. Even worse is the censorship, so the fringe stuff is just deleted and you can't even find it. The internet just isn't fun, general. I'm trying to find more offline activities to fill the void.
Acid Burn · 2021-09-12 06:15
>>50511 Not feeling good. But I gave up and deal with all. You can't escape perfectly while you are staying on the internet. But you can stay far away best how you can. Of course if you take care of privacy more and more, your life experience is worse and worse during you are living in 21 century. >And this is my rule. >1. Find the alternative which can be considered it's better than owned by corps or closed source. >2. If you find alternatives than move to it >3. If you can't find alternatives then deal with that softwares. But set up settings how you can set for privacy even though it maybe meaningless. This. And these are my lists >1. Youtube -> Invidious >2. Google -> Searx >3. MS Office -> Libreoffice >4. Android stock roms -> Official custom roms like lineage, calyx or grephene. >5. Gmail or Outlook -> disroot, rise up etc. >Any many others. Maybe banking apps, payment apps, online shopping or government programs can't be used with alternatives. Deal with it is better at your mental condition. Anyway, It's your choice. I understand why you felt not good at nowadays softwares or internet web. I can't feel fun. I just use internet cuz it's essential in 21 century society.

>>50511 In most cases, the "spying" is benign and does nothing to or for me. I will say that applications and bypasses exist for Youtube such as Skytube for phones and invidio for web browsers. As for censorship, I generally do not use services that use heavy censorship except Youtube for videos. I have a Discord account since I find some servers too much fun to avoid. I am on my 3rd account since Discord employees enjoy STD dix in their dookieholes. I also suggest checking out Bitchute as a workable alternative.

>>50511 >How do you deal with this Lainons? am I just crazy? am i the only one who thinks this? I find most of my enjoyment on the internet from more obscure sources without any user tracking: exploring random webrings, talking in chat rooms (IRC, Matrix, XMPP), talking on forums/message boards (like this one), etc. I recommend you try it perhaps. (https://nojs.club/) this is a fun webring in my opinion to explore >>50578 >In most cases, the "spying" is benign I wouldn't define government agencies implementing mass surveillance for malicious purposes, social credit-esque systems being implemented, and massive security breach risks as "benign"; I highly recommend you look into the subject further.

>>50578 >the "spying" is benign and does nothing to or for me ah yes good old "I'm not a criminal" or "I have nothing to hide". Until your data leaks or gets in the wrong hands and it is used against you
Naomi Nascimento · 2021-09-12 23:34
>>50511 I've jumped into the rabbit hole of FOSS and keeping a closer pulse on security trends and what's "on the horizon". The last 5-6 years I didn't give a molecule of a soykaf about my privacy and I regret it. Now it's something of a fun home project - piece-by-piece removing my reliance on public internet and cloud infrastructure, archiving data that sites tend to censor, creating safe paths of communication for me and the fam - and that push for privacy has been scratching a similar itch to what I used to enjoy about the internet back in the early 2000's. Of course as a counterpoint, bootlickers will say "nothing wrong, nothing to hide" etc. but I think that entirely misses the point. All people are easily influenced, even those who are consciously aware they are being influenced. It's been eons in relative terms since this became accepted fact. By extension, the more data you feed to the machine gods, the more you are willingly subjecting yourself to the 'personalized' influence they've crafted just for you, by it advertising or news media or services crafted in virtual laboratories to sink the deepest possible psychological hooks into your cheek. Maybe that's your thing, and you love being the catch of the day, but you should own that fact and wear it like a badge instead of obfuscating it behind the guise of swearing that privacy is a non-issue.
Cypher · 2021-09-12 23:43
>>50511 >>50588 To be clear, OP, I mean "you" speaking to the bootlicking audience. Maybe the golden days of a burgeoning, poorly censored, (relatively) untracked internet are over, but there's still fun to be had in creating your own dark corners and connecting with other people who feel the same.

>>50602 >Companies learn you are looking up topics such as home gardening as an example so you see ads for garden equipment. That's how advertising worked 2 decades ago, telemetry in the modern day is far more invasive. Location data, social media activity, purchasing histories, basically anything and everything is used to make a profile not just of your interests but of your psychology, your mood, your health. Any weakness that analysis exposes can be, and usually is, automatically exploited for profit.

When the original silk road died it died as a liberal experiment (like the 1990s were) as far as I was concerned. >>50612 I've had the exact same experience some years ago when I still regarded the "alternative net" to whatever we now have with hopeful interest and reverence. I never did get any further than whatever the hidden wiki (and whatever links there were listed on the related sites) provided, which - at least back then - basically came down to no more than an endless, desolate heap of abandoned sites, dead links, a couple of oh-so-edgy early 2000's "cool kidz" sites with their collections of "forbidden texts" that you can these days buy off of fuarrrking amazon for a pittance or just google it, a couple of drug sites and a rídiculous amount of all kinds of porn sites. Ugh. I realized that a long time ago. Wave of dread hit me pretty hard, but I got over it. My objective now is to limit as much information that I can give. With how I use the net, I will never be sane if I try to squash every trackers and peeping eyes. Best I can do is blindly trust SOME pet peeves here and there. Alot like many lainons here, I seek alternatives of what I use everyday and try to stay in the realm of FOSS and what not. Things like Discord or whatever to keep contact with my normal folks don't concern me too much. There is so much flying around that I don't think I am in risk unless my immediate virtual surrounding is concerned. Pesky user malware, Policy updates, etc... (Pretty limited too. Just hang around 1 or 2 friend servers.) In the end, it's all about trying to keep most of what you consider personal info at bay. Put on the net what you are comfortable putting out there. And for apps, well just make your research about what you use and ask if you really need it. I've not seen many keyloggers or malware, but that's because I got all the apps I need and never sought for more.

Kinda offtopic maybe, but I've been browsing the alternative websites: small image boards, lainchan webring and GeoCities sites and everywhere that might take you too. but while I actually enjoy browsing the net again, I feel something is missing. I think it's just services like YouTube before it was trying to squeeze every peny possible or some forums that had a bigger sense of community. It's not glowy soykaf, it's just terrifying that corps actually do this soykaf "without" reason.
