Who Want a "lain.email" Domain Name?

Wintermute · 2021-06-30 19:24
Hi lainons. Does anyone want a "lain.email" domain name? I have this name for years without any uses. Extra points if you'll use this name for actual emails.

>>47979 >It would be cool and not cool because you'll might regret it. I know, it's why I want to transfer the domain name to a project which is interesting to me, so I know it's at least not a waste, and preferably E-mail related. But I also know that hosting a public email service, either by myself or transferring it to someone else, is inherently a somewhat nasty business, I don't want to create a cock.li. So I'm still not sure what to do about it. One idea is running a E-mail server myself, and create accounts per requests from Lainchan on a case-by-case basis. I'm not still I have the energy to manage it, though.

Zero Cool · 2021-08-25 23:26
OP here. I just remembered I posted a thread, so I'm back. On second thought, perhaps it really is a project worth trying. BTW, since I now want to get into OpenBSD (after 10 years on GNU+Linux), so running a server sounds like a fun way to learn more. This is the plan. Basic: SMTP and IMAP running on a VPS. Webmail: not sure, perhaps a Roundcube? Forwarding: Not sure, perhaps I should make it an option. Delivery: server will be SPF, DKIM, DMARC compliant, but if the destination is notoriously uncooperative like Microsoft Outlook. When the server is ready (not yet, save you requests for later), anyone who wants an address can leave a comment here with your personal guarantee that it'll only be used for personal communication only, without engaging in spamming, phishing, trolling, raiding, doxxing, or other forms of harassment. I'll review and create accounts manually.
Apoc · 2021-08-25 23:27

Are there problems avoiding spam filters when you run your own mail server? I think may be a big problem
藤原純一 · 2021-08-26 10:45
>>49806 Isn't the only way to get spam to have your email be publicly visible and well known? I really doubt they have bots trying to exhaust every possible domain name so unless you share it on shady sites it shouldn't happen. Besides that you can make blacklist for certain domains and emails which should already help quite a bit.
Chan Siu Ming · 2021-08-26 21:14
>>49807 >>49806 I think he was talking about your email being marked as spam by other servers. As somebody who runs a mail server, it can be a problem in the beginning, but when your domain has been around for a while, spam filters will stop catching you. I've had my domain for a little over a half a year now and I haven't been marked as spam in months. It also helps to use TLS and to serve some HTML from the domain as well, be it webmail or just a simple "Hello world!"
Motoko Kusanagi · 2021-08-26 21:16
>>49812 (me) I do remember hearing something about VPS hosts and the like having something about their IPs that normal users can't get (besides it being static), that basically makes it impossible to get through from a home server. Can't remember what though.
Yamaoto Toshi · 2021-08-28 05:17
>>49812 >>49813 Exactly. The E-mail servers nowadays use strict IP reputation systems, including community and commercially maintained ones. If you just grab a random static IP from a home ISP, it's likely that the IP (well, the entire netblock) is already blocked due to the spamming activities from viruses. Moreover, home ISPs usually proactively block SMTP ports, unbanning is not even an option. The same situation applies to VPS providers to a lesser extent. Home servers are out of question, but it's usually solvable if you are an VPS consumer. Just file a ticket request and your ports will be unblocked. Then go through the IP reputation databases and request an IP whitelist. Finally setup a server and follow the anti-spam conventions, like reverse DNS, SPF, DKIM, DMARC. Then you should be able to mail others without problems. It sounds tedious but easy for anyone with some sysadmin experience. However... Some E-mail services are known to be especially aggressive, or even unreasonable for blocking small servers and marking mails as spams - even when you've done everything correctly. A notorious offender is Microsoft Outlook. Thus, speaking of mail delivery, the best I can do is making to reachable to 90% of the mail services. >https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=23963872 >Microsoft (Live/Hotmail/Outlook/...) is the single worst offender against small mail servers. I have run a mail server for the last ten years spam-free and vulnerability-free. It has never been on any spam blacklists, delivery to GMail is just fine. I have implemented everything from SPF to DKIM to correct rDNS. >Yet, my IP address predictably ends up on Microsoft's "blacklist" every two months or so because of "spam behaviour or user complaints". I am rather sure that neither is true. Every time I have to fill in their appeal form, get unlocked immediately but have to do the same dance again two months later. >They have every right to reject a mail server but at least they shouldn't lie about the reason. My server's IP address gets blacklisted again and again even during months I don't send any mail to Microsoft addresses.
Lain Iwakura · 2021-08-28 05:24
>>49812 Try sending a mail to a Microsoft address, and see if you get a mailer daemon rejection message immediately. If no, you're lucky. If yes and you've already solved it, I would be glad to learn what magic form did you fill to make Microsoft unblocks your server. To be clear, I'm not really bothered by the Microsoft ban, I run my own server for 5 or 6 years already and I don't mail Microsoft addresses very often. But still, I'd like to find a solution.
Cowboy · 2021-08-28 18:01
>>49850 I have a friend who uses Outlook mail, but I've never had a problem sending messages. I do use a VPS though, so it's probably that.

>>49850 >But still, I'd like to find a solution. Are your outgoing e-mails signed with DKIM? Are your SPF records otherwise well-configured? ("Big Companies" prefer to see more restrictive SPF records, to have a bit more assurance that incoming e-mails are at least authorized by the domain holder) Is your domain on any scummy "blacklists"? Is your network host (public-facing) otherwise reputable?

>53726 Yeah he's openly right-wing leaning. I mean, it wasn't a surprise as he's a post-2010 newfriend of 4chan /g/. Here is a list of things he did/do: -Didn't believe Covid was real/dangerous at first -Use the N word a lot and thinks everyone should be able to use it (he's a total free speech advocate) -Went to 36C3 conf to troll, got derezzed from the event and went totally retarded about it (claimed he was attacked etc. In reality he trolled and tried to refuse to leave so they had to use force and wait for police as he was totally autistic about it) -He sent 2 CVs to duckduckgo: _One of a white guy with a lot of skills _One of a black girl with less skills ---> He claimed the white guy was refused and the black girl accepted. But if you look closely it's obvious why they choose the black girl: White guy had a lot of skills but soykafty experience, Black girl had less skills her experiences were working at big companies like Instagram, Facebook, Google etc. ===> So he claim DuckDuckGo is anti-white racist for pincking the black girl, pointing about the fact that DuckDuckGo Talent Acquisition Manager is a fat woman (ironic knowing he's also super fat). But he's too retarded to understand why a company would pick someone with experience in big tech companies over a random skilled guy from nowhere. -He accused DuckDuckGo CEO of being a fed because of his previous company he sold more than 15 years ago. -He believe in PizzaGate (lol) -Promoted the DNC leak + he is actually hosting the files and .torrent on his servers I mean, Cockli is good but why would I pick this soykaf over Riseup? (Even if I were also a right-winger) He have less experience in emails. All his domains are edgy and more likely to attrack negative media attention. The only thing good about Cockli is the servers location, but try to remember EU also have intelligence agencies ;) Just use Riseup and PGP, at least they know what they do, they are not edgy kids begging for attention like Vincent Canfield. >53735 >I don't know if you've noticed but the establishment has been slightly harder on conservatives than liberals lately. I don't know if you've noticed, but a lot of conservatives are new internet users (40-50yo, even +60yo) or at least new social medias users. We see them spamming edgy soykaf every day, reposting obvious conspiracy theories (PizzaGate, Adrenochrome, etc) and are most likely to post racist soykaf. No wonder why they get derezzed lol. Last time I reported someone on Twitter for -full on- racism*, the guy got derezzed, created a new account and posted: "Dur dur I got derezzed because of my political views dur dur leftists bad, big tech is antifa dur dur". So... you know... people lie on the Internet when they do stupid soykafs (like video games' cheaters) *(The guy tweeted something using the N word and linking black people to rape or some soykaf. It was funny to reply to his new account with the screenshot of the actual tweet he got derezzed for. He blocked me 10min later lol)
