>>47483 I don't like to soykaf on peoples distros, but you obviously have no shame if you are posting FUR on top of Winblows. You don't even have to use a hard to install distro. No one installs Gentoo at first. Everyone either does Ubuntu, or maybe even the free software version Trisquel. You could use Debian even, there is no excuse to sodomize the good name of your installed software with a Windows operating system. And what the fuarrrk are SMAs? This is bait. I'm literally hyperventilating because you would waste good CPU cycles on this nonsense. Whats sick is you're prob into those weird animal noises. You could have at least tried to make the argument that "b.b..but I need photoshop" and I would have given you the pass, but you are too proud and shamelessly a fury boi. Good day sir.

It's pretty neat yeah, in dark theme it looks super good but on light theme it looks meh. KDE sort of has it but some programs don't comply. Although I think that the global menu on macOS is tied to the current running program (i'm not kidding), so if it freezes, you can only open the items on the right side (battery, clock, etc), but clicking on any items on the left will freeze. This even applies to the Apple menu, so you have to switch applications to open apple menu > force quit, lmao kino design apple. >>48568 haha lol, that's a weird problem. I'm having this weird problem where 9front won't boot from a certain usb I have (it boots from other usbs). So I was trying to install 9front on this external hard drive that I have, but every time I got to the partitioning section I'd get scared that I might accidentally wipe my main ssd and I'd just power off my laptop without doing the installation. So I did this like 3 times within an hour (I changed the filesystem on my external hard drive once and then booted from 9front to make sure that I would be certain which name represented my hard drive), and then when I was finally sure of everything, I dd-d the 9front iso onto my usb but my laptop magically decided to stop booting 9front off that usb. So fuarrrking weird. It boots other linux/*bsd ISO's off that usb just fine, though.

Liet Kynes · 2021-09-22 16:22
>>51076 Imagine all the good things they told you about UNIX were true, and also extended to the hardware. In fact, the whole philosophy of "do one thing and do it well" applies to the operating system as a whole. Using GNU/Linux tends to be a fairly disjointed experience, because everything has a different interface and output. In Plan9, everything is a file. Your mouse is a file. The screen is a file. The internet is a file. Everything uses one uniform interface. From unity comes power. The 9front implementation of git, for example, is nothing more than a collection of tiny shell scripts manipulating files. It is also interesting in that it makes full use of the mouse and (2d) graphics, which usually are either underexplored (UNIX) or explored in really annoying ways (Windows, MacOS). You basically can't use Plan9 without a three button mouse and a graphical terminal. Everybody talks about the distributed nature of the project, which, admittedly, is probably one of the most important parts, but there are lots of other innovations that Plan9 made. UTF-8, for instance. It truly tried to be something original, and I think that it really paid off.

Yuki Nagato · 2021-09-22 18:39
>>51096 >Keyboard control of that stuff is simply superior For window management I think it comes down to personal preference. But for text editing this is simply untrue. There have been studies where groups of people who believed they were more proficient with the mouse and those who believed they were more proficient with the keyboard were both tested. An even mixture of mouse users and keyboard users were told to edit text using either only the mouse (not counting the actual typing) and then only the keyboard. What they found was, regardless of preference, typists thought that they were faster with the keyboard. However, in reality, the mouse was faster for both groups. It's an illusion caused by the hand's travel time to the mouse. Mice have human understandable precision. Mouse controls probably feel unnatural to you, but that's only because of your muscle memory. I felt the same after switching to a mouse-based setup after years of tiling WMs and vi as my primary text editor. But the more you use it, the more effective it becomes.

I'm fairly certain that people have written shell scripts that tile windows for them using rio's file interface. In addition, on 9front, you could open a terminal and open a second rio session inside of that terminal, and then simply hide/unhide it as you need more desktop space. You couldn't do this with plan9port's rio, but I'm fairly certain wio (wayland port of rio) will allow it. I keep seeing cool DWM configs but everyone who has them ends up talking about how they've got like 40 patches in theirs to make it look good, which to me seems to defeat the purpose of using DWM since it's meant to be "lightweight" and "suckless", since you'll have to recompile and apply patches every time you wanna set your rice up again on another computer or something, makes much more sense to me to have something like bspwm where you can configure it just using a .config file since you can just keep a git repo to pull and you don't have to recompile anything.

I've been using Adwaita recently and actually kind of like it now, and I like the new libadwaita version of Adwaita even more, so I don't really mind terribly if they totally demolish theming of GTK and GNOME, but they're being objectively scummy about it. They're literally lying and spreading disinfo to smear people like that Jeremy guy who runs Pop!_OS whose entire livelihood essentially depends on his ability to make a nice GNOME theme. The same people that have previously said they hate theming and want it to die are the people who he is supposed to be begging for a theming api, and he's been told he is going to have to be the one that puts all the work in on it, and they'll only let him make it if it appeases them, but it never will because they don't want theming to begin with. Then he starts trying to work on it and gets dogpiled by these people who are all claiming he's been toxic in response to them objectively mistreating him. Then those same people start posting on Reddit that he is posting disinfo and lying when these were literally all public discussions. IDK. It put a sour taste in my mouth. I dont use Pop!_OS so it doesn't affect me but its still fuarrrked up. I honestly am okay with the direction GNOME is going because I don't really customize GNOME to begin with, and I think these changes will probably improve the vanilla experience greatly, but they're really burning a lot of bridges with a lot of people over their own ego. If Ubuntu and Pop!_OS fork GTK4 or switch to Qt+KDE it will literally be the 9/11 of the Linux desktop and it will 100% entirely be the GNOME project's fault. Which is sad.

Most distros use systemd because that's what Red Hat and Fedora use, which are two of the most popular, and certainly most powerful GNU/Linux distros (Red Hat is the 2nd highest contributor to the Linux kernel). >>51562 >Linux is a kernel This is true, however, I said GNU/Linux. As in the version of the GNU distribution which uses the Linux kernel. I also never mentioned choice, I said freedom. Can you read? In any case, I've never used Arch. I use Artix because after distrohopping for a while, I found that it supported my hardware the best. Arch would probably be the same way, but Artix was easier to install. As I mentioned before, I do not use systemd simply because it offers no value to me. Runit meets my use case and boots more quickly. I've never had a problem with it. You seem to be getting pretty worked up about this. You do realise that your software choice isn't you, right? That just because not everybody agrees that your way is right, it's is not an attack on your character? You are not the software you run. Software is a tool. If tomorrow Ubuntu or Fedora or whatever distro offered me some benefit Artix denied me, I would switch, even if that meant using systemd. Would you do the same for Artix?

>>51562 Not the poster you're replying to but consider the following: https://lainchan.org/rules.html You're constantly using personal attacks, stop. >Linux is a kernel. >Init freedom doesn't exist. As far as I'm concerned the Linux kernel lets you load any init system, not only systemd. Also because Linux is just a kernel and not a complete system, systemd is a separate project and is not always shipped with Linux - see Android, Guix, Devuan, Artix and other memes. >If you actually think that you don't need systemd then you're absolutely delusional. I use Guix System as my desktop system, I don't need systemd and I'm not delusional. > Linus Torvalds is not obligated to give you """init""" """"freedom"""" You don't really seem to know what Linus is responsible for these days, anyway he didn't lock the kernel from running inits other from systemd, see Android. Linux developers in fact give me the freedom to run any init I want.

>>51561 systemd is only bad if you use some weird distro that breaks at some point like arch or some issue tracker distro namely "fedora" and "opensuse". (new software) - it does break since new barely-tested things usually do that but it's only a matter if whether you're on enterprise linux or not. enterprise usually never break and issue tracker distros tend to iron the job for their enterprise counterparrt (actually it's the clueless non-enterprise users' job to find out the bugs! hello?), it would be bad enterprise 'did' break. when systemd arrived it wasn't even used on enterprise since they knew and a lot of independent people's systems broke a few times and gotta press that report button to make sure the enterprise linux will know but "we'll fix that for you" and thus the ecosystem is born. after all you'll have to think and pause, how long will this "breaking" continue? protip: it won''t stop. maybe debian or ubuntu is on the other direction (conservative and use old as fuarrrk software) while arch is at the opposite (use new software, if it breaks good luck) but recently all these red hat things spread all over the entire distro ecosystem that what you have now has red hat software that might break (systemd, etc) and guess what, suddenly nothing is stable (maybe crux or slack but you get the idea). >>51562 > I run a SUSE system myself >BECAUSE I run a SYSTEMD'D distro you gotta thank the people who broke their systems for you rhel/sle both use older version of systemd and you can guess it's stable for you but most of everyone else isn't. honestly I don't have a problem with systemd but whatever arch is doing is to be a systemd bug tracker is not a good idea. there were times systemd forgot to "safely unmount drives" or whatever buggy soykaf that's cyberhumped or even an update breaks "cryptomount" or whatever. not good. don't forget that infinite shutdown timer.

>>51649 Windows is bad feeling now because of rampant feature creep, schizophrenic design choices leaving a garbled mix of almost NT looking stuff and hyper modern (and particularly bad) flat design and bloat no one asked for, not bloat in the oh no my linux install uses 750mb of RAM at idle sense, but the constant well my disk is pinned for no reason and One Drive is deciding to sync even though I don't use it and Cortana is telling me to buy more MS stock even though I disabled her last update and oh look Xbox game pass came up for no reason and the OS is giving priority to downloading updates even though it knows I'm trying to stream media and am near the peak of my available bandwidth way. It feels bad to use because its actively annoying, going back to using stock W10 after using any linux distro is like going on a dodgy website with your ad and script blockers turned off and being barraged with lurid soykafty ads, hideous Javascript and constant popups Windows 10 with the soykaf gutted out of it, in as far as that's possible, is actually quite pleasant to use, you can feel microsoft's cock resting against your backpassage still but its more implied than in your guts the way it is in a stock install. But even with debloating w10 is just more annoying than its really worth, I'm typing from a W10 machine right now but I only have it installed because I need it for university work, and I really dislike using it for anything else, the only upsides Windows really has now are Battery life and software availability, which is rapidly falling apart.

How do you lainons measure the boot speed of your desktop? I've heard this is possible with systemd-analyze but I don't have it. I think this is enough to determine it? I use openrc. Now that I think of it, I should probably plug in a USB device when the desktop environment is loaded successfully so that dmesg can give me the timestamp.

>>51576 Fedora will still break by the time they implement gnome 40 while the enterprise Rhel will still be on gnome 34, well I just checed and it's actually still at gnome 3.32 This breaking never stops as the ecosystem is the free users will have to iron out the bugs and then you have no distro that can support raid out of the box because it updates way too fast, RAID is not supported or will at some point break because some update was meant to find bug for the enterprise. I hope I'm actually joking. >>51579 You know what anon said is true, just look at the forums, the issues are archived, all the problems a casual free user had to face and will face again in the future when new software comes around the corner. Early adopters get the worm like. No one actually does conservative job at making a distro that will just support raid encryption and more out of the box I think they will just write a wiki how it's not gonna work or put disclaimers as it will break or whatever. They all break or will just jump ship to the newest red hat software same as Pipewire which still had distortion, I tested it lately and I'm getting desync and skipping of music playback.
