How hard is it to convert one distribution of Linux into another without simply reinstalling over the old? Like say a *buntu to Devuan for example. So no need to deal with changing package manager, but it does use a different init and kernel version.

I have recently been interested in naming my files and directories according to the Portable Filename Character Set (https://pubs.opengroup.org/onlinepubs/007904975/basedefs/xbd_chap03.html#tag_03_276) as defined by POSIX, i.e. [a-z], [A-Z], [0-9], and [._-]. This should ideally make my system and filestructure both more UNIX-like (by which I will likely begin to use lowercase only for the most part) while being compatible with other systems (e.g. if I were to share files between another operating system). However, I have been stumped on how exactly I should name different things with these restrictions, in particular media files. If I cannot find any help here, I will probably just make up something that "just works" or I'll leave everything how it is. However, I feel like it is possible that somebody here uses these restrictions, so I thought I might ask here.
Some of my main issues revolve around how to handle "sort names" and which characters should be implemented for different logical separation.
As for sort names, I currently use the following formats: `~/doc/book/Doe,-Jane;-Smith,-John-Jackson/Whatever-Book.epub` for books (a similar format is followed for other media that have multiple authors; the semicolon and everything after is omitted in the case that it is single authors/etc.). Of course, `,` and `;` are not part of the "Portable Filename Character Set", so I would like to avoid them. I have considered using a format more like `~/doc/book/doe.jane-smith.john_jackson/whatever.book.epub`—I think the `.` could work sort of like a file extension (e.g. ".txt") by which the names other than the last name are suffixed after, but still "attached", to the surname in question. The one issue with this is that it looks sort of weird with `interesting.book_an.epub` because it seems to put "epub" on the same level as the actual words, making it possibly translatable as "An Interesting Book Epub" instead of "An Interesting Book". The underscores (which I have been reluctant to use because they are not a delimiter that will naturally be separated in text editors, web browsers, etc.) could be used in this circumstance because the parts of the name following the surname are still "one" and can be connected more tolerably than other things. The remaining special character, `-`, which I had previously used as a space substitute, could be used as a separator. This may not be the best way—I am open for feedback.
As for logical separation, I suppose it would only make sense that I stick with the above rules: use `.` in the place of spaces, use `-` for separation, and use `_` for sub-separation when there are items on separate logical levels. So, in addition to the changes to documents I've listed above, I could change a music listing from `~/aud/mus/Interesting-Music-Group,-The/1999~An-Interesting-Album/01~An-Interesting-Track.flac` to `~/aud/mus/interesting.music.group_the/1999-an.interesting.album/01-an.interesting.track.flac` (however, I do not know how I would set up `beets` to do something so specific with words moved to the end for sort names; I have been substituting special characters with `_` so maybe I could settle with `interesting.music.group_.the`, although that is a bit weird and ugly).
==I have had some uncertainty on how I should implement this and if I should commit to this new WIP naming system, so any feedback would be appreciated. Is this any good? Does anyone else do anything similar?
Haruyoshi · 2021-06-06 20:06
Does anyone know of any themes (GTK, Qt, or window manager themes) that look similar to Windows 95/98/2000 but are also a bit different, as in they don't look exactly like Windows 9x.

Actually, for musical sort names it may have to be different in some cases. Sure, in the case of multiple artists, one could do `bach.johann_sebastian-gould.glenn` but in the case that an article is being pushed to the end, it wouldn't quite work: `interesting.band_the` does not make sense because "the" is attached to the entire thing and not just the last word. I could perhaps do `interesting_band.the`, which would make sense, but it would take away a large portion of the delimiting ability and it would be inconsistent since names that are not being sorted like this (e.g. an artist name "Interesting Artist" → `interesting.artist`) would be separated primarily by `.`s whereas things that do have a special "sort name" would be primarily separated by underscores.
I feel like this might be too complex for a simple naming scheme. Maybe I should not do such specific modifications based on comma/semicolon separation (maybe I should just do a certain substitution for `,-` or `;-` without changing out the separator between words) but at the same time I sort of like the orderlyness of this system (but at the same time it may make scripting or navigation difficult).
What are your thoughts on this?
>>46978
I only know of Chicago95, which is meant to be a clone of Win95. Maybe you can modify it.
Older versions of desktop environments sort of look more similar to Win95 (than newer versions of those DEs) but I'm not sure if it's quite what your looking for.
If you want something more Windows-like look into LXDE/LXQt — you could also try out a window manager (you may not want a tiled windows manager, although I would recommend it: I've never used a non-tiling WM on its own but I believe openbox fits that description; for tiling WMs look into i3wm for something simple that just works, dwm for something a bit more advanced but also more customizable, and herbstluftwm for something in the middle)

>I have recently been interested in naming my files and directories according to the Portable Filename Character Set
I happen to follow this character set out of coincidence, unaware of it being a part of any standard body of definition until seeing your post. My reason for it is encountering programs that lose their soykaf when spaces or some "odd" or "special" character show up in a filename or directory. I don't usually feel like patching these tools since I'm lazy and so conform to their behavior. And just like that I've become a luser, oh no...
>Some of my main issues revolve around how to handle "sort names" and which characters should be implemented for different logical separation.
Maybe keep that to a minimum? The reason to follow this character set in the first place is to have a higher chance of compatibility with tools and avoid unexpected behavior across filesystems, not sorting or anything humans care about, like logical separation or aesthetics. Use an interface over filenames instead. It can be as light or heavy-handed as you want.
With your books it seems that you want to have a view of them structured by authors and handle multiple if present, right? Then a simple approach to an interface could be a wrapper for ls(1) to provide alternative output, a shell script if that's your thing. Sort and list the books that way you want, could even throw xdg-open(1) into the mix and it wouldn't be a bad setup.
For something more interactive there's ranger. Write a custom command or "plugin" to do some custom output and displaying: https://github.com/ranger/ranger/wiki/Custom-Commands
Personally I use Emacs and make heavy use of Dired with it. Crafting an interface can be achieved through whatever program or combination of them you like. Point is to layer over the filenames to have a more pleasant way of viewing, organizing, and interacting. The benefit being nothing to disrupt current tooling and compatibility with whatever else you might use in the future.
>As for sort names, I currently use the following formats: `~/doc/book/Doe,-Jane;-Smith,-John-Jackson/Whatever-Book.epub` for books
Is this directory structure nesting, along with that of author names useful to you? My own approach is to keep it all as flat as reasonably possible. I have a top-level directory ~/documents/ and roughly intelligible names. See attached tree.txt
Books are placed along with any other textual content that I'd read and isn't my own. Papers, guides, documentation, slides, and so on. I have a basic naming scheme I loosely impose:
<title>__<author*>.<extension>
Dashes are the separator for the title and for authors individual name. Underscores to distinguish the title from the rest of the filename but is also used in the case of multiple authors. Capitalization of the title follows the style from the document itself and always with author names. The naming scheming is loosely imposed though as I said, which allows for when author names are unknown, non-existent, or a pseudonym instead of a real name.
I avoid creating directories as well, and nesting is evil as far I'm concerned. Little is more tedious than going through directory after directory after several directories later and being forced to cognitively parse it. You don't want directories, you want a file. File managers and efficient means of jumping to important locations can alleviate this but might as well not make the mess in the first place. An easy top-level location is decent enough with avoiding the tedium of repetitive navigation. Reliance on my own memory of titles, author names, and the structure is significantly reduced as well.
I have a simple approach to imposed structure with my music directory as well, see the attached file again. Inside ~/music/ are directories named after the artists, within those artist directories are directories named after their albums, and thank god that's the end to the nesting.
Filenames follow a basic scheme:
<tracknumber>-<title>.<extension>
But I'm thinking of using a simpler one instead:
<tracknumber>.<extension>
Which would be like 01.mp3. For my need of track titles when playing albums audio metadata tagging is plentiful and easy. I use mpv (via EMMS in Emacs) so that handles titles from metadata just fine.

Yes, part of the reason I want to conform to this standard is to minimize any weird errors that might come up as a result of special or unrecognized characters in filenames
>Maybe keep that to a minimum? Good point, perhaps the actual appearance of the filenames themselves is not that important, although using safe characters might be. I have sort of considered doing something like this in the past but haven't gotten to it. If I am going to use that, perhaps it would be easiest to list things without "sort names" and rather in their normal format, so maybe as something like `jane.doe-john.jackson.smith` instead of doing weird things with moving things around. At the same time, I like having things ordered correctly, but this could probably be accomplished with some script involving `sed`, or an `ls` wrapper like you said (I'm not exactly sure what you mean by this, maybe an external script of sorts).

I do use ranger already, quite frequently for file browsing. However, I did not know about the custom commands to display files differently; I think I'll look into this. I've never really used emacs and probably won't for now. With my music player, ncmpcpp, I normally use the option to browse through files by browsing through the actual filesystem, but there is an option to browse based on tags and metadata—perhaps I will customize that to format a bit more like I'd like and start using that instead.

Separating things into increasingly more specific directories has just been something I've always done. I can see why it would be an issue. I sort of like the way you do it—it seems pretty elegant. I may or may not adopt a similar technique.
>Filenames follow a basic scheme:
<tracknumber>-<title>.<extension>
Yeah, that sounds pretty good and simple, similar to what I thought of for my new naming scheme. What do you use in the place of spaces in <title> if you separate it from <tracknumber> with `-`? Do you use `.`, or `_` (or maybe you just use `-` regardless—that's what you used in the place of spaces for authors and it likely wouldn't make it difficult to distinguish).
>But I'm thinking of using a simpler one instead:
><tracknumber>.<extension>

This actually seems really nice and simple; maybe I'll start using this instead. Very rarely do I actually need to look at the actual title from the file itself.
Side note: I have been wanting to find ways to easily access and perhaps edit the metadata of various types of content without needing an entire "program" (like viewing the information of a music file without a music player or book info without something like calibre. I think ranger does this but it is a program, not a simple command line script, and I don't know how I'd edit metadata from there).
Anyway, thank you for the detailed response. It is very helpful.

>I want to avoid Javascript and php, are there any good alternatives? I'm thinking something like Clojurescript or Typescript.
Clojurescript and Typescript are, to use an overused phrase, just Javascript with extra steps. They'll help you avoid writing Javascript directly but they and everything else like them (Coffeescript, Dart, etc) "compile" down to Javascript. That's really all that browsers can use for scripting.
Avoiding PHP is easy. Just use hosting that's not PHP-only shared web hosting. Use a VPS and you can take your pick of any server-side language. A great choice for this is Go. The standard library packages "html/template" (for parsing HTML and CSS templates) and "net/url" (for parsing URL queries) can get you a long way towards a slick interactive site without a single line of Javascript.

Sorry, I didn't see that at first. Thanks, looks good—I may base my files off of this (again, still not sure about putting author after title, but that can be viewed differently with some scripting)

For video and audio there's mediainfo(1) along with it's --Output=JSON option that'd be useful for scripting with something like jq: https://stedolan.github.io/jq/tutorial
Alternative to mediainfo could be ffprobe, it has optional json output as well. I prefer the output of mediainfo but it's an option too.
For pretty much everything else there's exiftool.

Interesting, I didn't know about this. Is this part of coreutils/is it installed by default? I had it installed already when I tried to run the command, but it may have been installed my something else
The JSON output seems like it would be quite usable, at least for music and video files. It doesn't look like this can write information (I may be wrong) but that would also be a useful functionality (maybe provided by the other programs you mentioned—I have not looked at those yet)

><title>__<author*>.<extension>
I think I am now going to implement something similar, but I do not think I am going to do it just the way you do it, because I still want to use the delimiters properly. Although I will be losing out on a lot of the delimited content, I might use the delimiters only to separate different items, i.e. I might do the_book_title--author_name.extension . I think this is pretty nice, but I am not sure about the double hyphen/underscore—those things look a bit odd. Regardless, I think this oddity allows it to make more sense for separation since it is much less likely for something to include a double hyphen in the title. I guess this would allow me to do somethings like the_hyphenated-story--author_name.extension if the original title was stylized like that, although I suppose I could also omit those. If I wanted to delimit every item, I guess I could do something like the.book.title--author.name.extension or the-book-title..author-name.extension but these seem kind of weird and it's as though the underscore is remaining unused in that case. I might just go with the first one I mentioned—what do you think?
>Filenames follow a basic scheme:
><tracknumber>-<title>.<extension>
>
>But I'm thinking of using a simpler one instead:
><tracknumber>.<extension>
I think for music files I will keep the title, or at least part of it (maybe capping at a length at 30 characters or so), in the filename in the case that I am navigating or scripting without access to the metadata or otherwise being in a CLI-only environment. In this case, I will likely do it in a similar style to the documents. For tracks, probably 01-the_title_with_underscores_in_the_place_of_spaces . I am still mildly bugged by the non-delimiting, but it seems pretty standard for people to use underscores like this in filenames. Even my Vim spell-check I'm using to write this now is acknowledging individual words separated by underscores as it would any other delimiter.
With artist names, automatically sorted/placed by beet import , it is a bit difficult to handle in a way similar to the documents. I have several considerations:
- Do not use a "sort name", simply use the original name, e.g. John Smith , [Frédéric Chopin; Artur Rubinstein] with some substitutions to make them conform to the standards (e.g. john_smith , [frederic_chopin--artur_rubinstein])—this seems quite easy to do since it involves no reordering or anything, it is fairly easy to substitute and convert characters including things like ; . The one issue with this is that you will end up with things like 50 occurrences of the-band under T instead of their respective "actual" letters. This can be handled with my music player (ncmpcpp )'s "Media Library" listing—I would have to figure out how to change that from sorting by Artist to sorting by Album Artist. Also, that isn't perfect either. An example of a flaw is that although it works with English names, it does not work with non-English names from what I can tell. For example, Der Rote Milan is listed under D while The Doors are also listed under D. This issue does not happen with sort names (as defined by MusicBrainz), where these items are listed as Rote Milan, Der and Doors, The .
- Using sort names and then using wizardry to make them appear in a desirable format. MusicBrainz, which beet uses, nicely gives everything a sort name which puts it in a way that can be listed alphabetically. A nice thing about this is that it converts non-Latin names into their best-known equivalents—if an artist is best-known by a Romanized transcription of the name, it will do that, but if they are known by a translation, it will go with that. Using the actual, non-"sort name" will not do this, and beet can use ASCII equivalents, but this is less nice, may not always be what is desired, and sometimes it does an awkward/sub-par transcription. The main issue with using sort names is the fact that it is awkward and non-standard. It is difficult to convert/substitute these into a "valid" format because there are many different ways to mutate a name into a "sort name" and sometimes this cannot be distinguished from a name that is identical to its sort name—especially to an automated computer program like beet .
For these reasons, I think I will use the "actual" name, not the sort name, and just do substitutions, although each method has the pros and cons I've mentioned.
If you have any further feedback about formatting or what I've just said, that would be greatly appreciated.

I currently have a lot of symlinks in use to manage my files. Perhaps I am overusing them, and I feel like I should do something else. For example, basically all of my non-hidden directories in ~ are symlinked to individual directories on two separate hard drives, my .config directory is symlinked to my repository which is downloaded into a directory within documents, which of course is symlinked into a hard drive. I have my gnupg and pass things symlinked to a hard drive location as well. Etc.
Perhaps I can make the separate hard drives into one via LVM or something, but I do not know how to do that. I also think I need to wipe the drives first. I think I could actually do that since I do have I drive with an older backup, I can copy everything over to that, hoping rsync will update it all.
I also think it might be a good idea to mount these locations rather than symlinking all of them. However, there's still a lot to mount. Maybe I could just have a separate partition/mounting mount for my entire /home, but I sort of like the ability to re-install, get all the filthy random files removed, but still have my "files".
Thoughts?

And Tor provides privacy from sites/servers you connect to, assuming you use it right. Vivaldi's own license explanation page (https://vivaldi.com/blog/vivaldi-browser-open-source/) says otherwise. The only parts of Vivaldi that are open source are the parts they've scavenged elsewhere and are legally required to make open, for example the Chromium backend. The UI stuff is all closed.
Vivaldi is exactly as open source as Microsoft Edge is, because they're the same frigging thing: proprietary UIs bolted on top of Chromium and some other BSD/MIT/etc glue they've grabbed from elsewhere.

Usually the question goes the other way: which laptop is well supported under Linux? If your laptop has poor support, none of them. If it has good support, any of the desktop-oriented distros should be fine. Mint if you don't know what you're doing.

Of course, you did not specify any use case beyond "laptop", which is pretty broad. You can use basically any distribution.

There were laptops before with similar form factor as pic related that had issues with the keyboard dock that linux or any rolling distro haven't supported yet.
They wiped their entire drive including windows recovery and driver files so they had to wait until it was fixed because their keyboard and track pad refused to work and reinstalling windows requires to manually add a proprietary driver upon installation and use the mouse while USB is blocked for security reasons. It's like installing linux on a chinese windows tablet with only one usb port.

The problem is more about how new or old the laptop is, too old or too new is usually where you get problems while there may also be issues with having a bugged EFI that rejects USB, USB keyboards, the POST being way too fast when fast startup, hiberboot, hybridboot, is enabled on windows and skipping the bootable linux drive. There's also wifi cards that linux blacklisted.

hey, I'm really liking how tmux lets you have multiple viewports open on multiple machines updated in real-time. It's totally changed how I organize my workspace. However, the "tabbed" window abstraction that tmux uses gets difficult to navigate when ~20 or more windows are open at once (as a matter of fact, web browsers have the same issue...) and I've been thinking about alternative schemes (besides tree-based tabbing, which I also dislike). Something that crossed my mind was using a single, discrete coordinate space (units being character cells, of course) and having all windows geometrically allocated across this space. Windows, as well as viewports, could be shifted/transposed. That way, spatial 2d organization could help to group things, much more intuitively than with 1d tabbing (imo).
pic related is a mock-up. and here's a pastebin:

Okay, I think I am nearing a good naming scheme. For book/document files I basically just did what the other lainon mentioned and I had started to write a thing with awk and sed and etc. but didn't reach a point of success. I might try further later.
As for music files, I am getting there. So far, it is just the ordinary artist name (I am considering using the sort name just because the romanizations of names can be weird/unpreferrable sometimes, but I might just stick with it since I will be interfacing via ncmpcpp most of the time and just file navigation will "work") which is then converted to all ASCII characters and then to lowercase, and then there are some substitutions which I am trying to work out and perfect. So far:
>Space in general (as well as Japanese "space" character ・ and maybe other things like that if I find any others) replaced with underscores
>Comma with or without spaces following it ,\s\? is replaced with a hyphen - (although I am considering doing a period, which looks closer to comma)
>Semicolon with or without spaces following it ;\s\? is replaced with a double hyphen -- but maybe I will opt to a single hyphen or something with periods.
>Special characters in general are replaced with hyphen. Maybe I should do period though.
>Aphostrophes ' are omitted. Something like "dont" seems more natural than "don-t" but it seems a bit odd to selectively omit some characters.
This still needs to be worked out some. Does anyone have any suggestions for what to change about substitutions or if I should use sort names?
I am also thinking of working out video files. I think for shows it will just be vid/whatever/show_name/s01/s01e01.mkv (basically just lowercase, de-verbosified, and underscore-spaced version of what I currently have). For YouTube/Peertube-style things I may leave capitalization as-is for authenticity, mainly since I have not worked out anything regarding tags or metadata yet.
Rick Deckard · 2021-06-29 15:42

And maybe if there are several authors, e.g. if there are more than 2 semicolons (or even commas) I'd just replace the entire e.g. ;.*;.* with et al. This is just a consideration, though—I may not do this.

Or maybe all special characters can be omitted/replaced with underscore since hyphen is used to separate from track name and . is for the file extension. I do not think this will necessarily be required though, since it is only the first - and last .

>bugged EFI that rejects USB, USB keyboards
Many laptops have that problem, usually there is that one and only USB port that lets you use peripheral devices while every other port is blocked by EFI or secureboot (sometimes turning it on would make a device refuse to detect the keyboard). With nu-laptops,that work like tablets, that might be a problem. There's usually only two usb ports, a full type-A and a type-C and usually one of them is block by EFI BIOS or even the fact that secureboot makes it impossible to boot EFI ISO unless that distro comes with Canonical's UEFI signing keys and rarely there's even no option to turn off secureboot for some device.

Every public file? A wget recursive/spider crawl might be what you're looking for. It checks every link for links and keeps going until none are left or it reaches the maximum depth if you defined one. Just make sure to restrict it to the domain you want.
Molly Millions · 2021-07-06 17:59

This, generally: >>48130. Also consider dirbuster or gobuster . Note that finding every file isn't exactly feasible.
1. Consider the case of a file that isn't referenced by any other (that you're aware of): if said file has a sufficiently long/random name, you probably won't be able to locate it without brute forcing all possible file names.
2. Further, consider a file referenced by a fluctuating name. Say its name is determined by f(time) (or even f(secret, time) ): without knowing the definition for f , you can't feasibly guess the file's name.
Outside of these special cases, the aforementioned solutions are probably what you're looking for.
Dr. X · 2021-07-06 18:01
>>48155
Also, in the case of #2, the fluctuation aspect doesn't have to be implemented by the web server. The file could be moved to f(time) by a daemon, cron job, or by the site administrator. In all of these cases, the site is still served statically.

Only today I discovered that there is the "inetd" and that GNU programs use a library called "gnulib".
My question is: Is there any material that teach in a systematic way how a UNIX system works in its entirety?
What I want is a material that grab in my hands and take me to walk throughout the UNIX (Linux or BSD) system. I just want to see what tools there are and what I can build with them, so I can deepen what is interest to me. The most important thing is to know that that exists.
The same dilemma happens in programming, I should reuse code and use libraries, but as I can know which libraries and functions there are if someone does not tell me.

Why people don't use nice/renice negative priorities on cpu intensive tasks like compiling the Linux kernel or cracking hashes? Using "nice -n -20 make -j4" with the linux kernel saved so much time on my crap computer and in some games I even got a fps boost using nice.

So I'm trying to set up a LUKSv2-encrypted logical volume group containing my boot, swap, root, etc. while my EFI system partition where GRUB resides remains unencrypted. I have to compile GRUB from source because there still aren't many distros that distribute v2.06 with LUKSv2 support yet. I have looked at many, many guides and it seems like no matter what I do the end result is I get grub installed but its lacking all the modules necessary to decrypt and read my logical volume group. Can anyone with a lot of experience with GRUB tell me what secret step I'm missing here? I have been fuarrrking around with this on and off for months and I am really fuarrrking tired of having a non-functional machine until I solve this.

I don't think grub knows wtf lvm is. You need something called an initramfs.
https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Custom_Initramfs
Dox · 2021-08-08 16:45
>>49371
GRUB definitely has an lvm module. You're getting ahead of me with initramfs, which is found in /boot. My problem is I cannot even get GRUB to successfully decrypt and open my partitions including /boot so that I can load initramfs, dracut, the kernel, etc.
Unnamed · 2021-08-09 10:03
>>49375
initramfs is just a mini linux root filesystem which grub can boot into. The initramfs can then decrypt the disk, setup lvm and then hand over to the real root filesystem.
If you say grub can do decryption and lvm then you don't need an initramfs. I've never used grub like that before.

An update: by specifying the modules I need directly with grub-install --modules="" I have managed to get the tools necessary to decrypt my LUKS2 volume from GRUB shell. In the process I managed to expose a bug dealing with parsing LUKS2 keyslots and got it patched by devs. Now I need to figure out how to automate the LUKS2 detection (another bug and patch dealing with successful probing may be necessary) so I don't need to do stuff manually from the GRUB shell. And it also turns out my initramfs still isn't setup properly to have encryption tools. This is still necessarily even though GRUB has this stuff because it needs to be able to pass what it knows about the filesystem on to the kernel. I'll have to do some further research to figure out what I'm doing wrong there. Progress, lainons!

thats the problem with windows, the WH_MOUSE/KEYBOARD hook only hooks a single program, so you only have a single pipe taking in input, if you hook it to a keylogger the input stops at your keylogger, so you either redirect it from the keylogger after being consumed like a smart person, or dont hook at all and just spam GetKeyState() which gives insane high cpu usage

Sick of lurking around wondering, is there a device with e-ink that is not android that has no restrictions and can read cbz (and has text to audio synthesis) of which is the size of a typical manga and costs a bit under or around 100 usd?
>was censored on r*ddit of course
>have nowhere to ask that will get attention now
>perhaps should make a thread on /lit/
Well anyway, they have weird offbrand Chinese ones that show up then immediately get bought, then show up on another seller, unless on ali, so with how much of an unfortunate bum I am I figured I'd just go ahead and ask someone.
About hacking, I figure would hacking brick it? Won't android's, though recommended, try to control you and also have planned obsolescence in their software design, even hardware design?
I've already used calibre to make all books txt so I can read them on any shabby device and even have my pocketgo v1 reading to me (that's a gp2x sort of thing, for emulation of old consoles really but it has text reading capability and text to audio) randomly (sounds bad really but it's a cool device to me anyway and it can show the text of course though it's a bit small for even normal reading I'd figure) but honestly manga I've never had a convenient small device for as tablets look bad when cheap on their sides in portrait mode.
Well, my overall point is that I know nothing about the weird offbrand ones if they often have no actual title but have a familiar hardware design. Do they have stores? They claim to have real e-ink and can read cbz, some claim it, but I just don't know.
The two types I keep staring at are this one and preferably this one as they come up a lot and that second ones seems to claim cbz and the other generally does not claim to be able to do it. I take it they are both bad but still. I assume they are both terrible in some way? These two designs that have no specific title nor name?
Also I don't like the idea of a touch screen.
I'm thinking that the pocketbook might be my best option and lurked enough to see someone claim most can do cbz? I'm reading and pondering ereaders_101, the wiki link, right now. It mentions not cbz in it though is nice to see.
I'm tempted to get an ancient barnes and noble one and forgo cbz as they can be dirt cheap and on their last legs but that'd be silly all things considered. I'd probably not.... actually probably not even if remade to be new. Cbz is kinda the whole point for me and cheap android tablets would seem best but last I tried that I needed to wear an eyepatch like a/as (a) pirate as they look bad on their sides due to cheaper lcd's, android tablets I've had. Also, again, they break easy. That and as add as I am, even if okay with being spied upon and such, really I'm not going to read if it can do anything other than reading, or manga viewing if that is not to be called reading, whatever, just as I'd not read for long on a tiny pocketgo v1 as it's going to tempt me to play games on it.
I don't really care about battery life also, though I figure that's an appeal, I have battery banks and solar panels stocked up, though it indeed lasting long would make me slightly less distracted by a constant wondering of the batteries percentage.
Also I know I could make it myself (the 'pi' soc route) but it'd be a terrible experience with how ham-handed I am and it'd not end up...sleek... even if it did work as a book reader. Is there a book reader OS I'm not aware of though that is not android for a pi (,or whatever name of system on a chip)? What do they do? Come with the driver for the e-ink? I'd not though, the last time I tried to make an umpc due to lack of funding I forwent trying a second (third really, but this post is too long as it is) try. It involved a cigar box that ended up quite demolished and the glue wasn't sticking on top of my having only a knife and drill to work with...I'm not in the mood to contemplate it in any case. I spent far too much on peripherals as it is to never use them for that rather failed experiment. I should buy lots of polymer clay but then that would harm the wallet when other priorities take precedence and I only get at most 400 usd per year, 200 at a time. I have another device I would like to get rather than just a book reader, hence the limit being half and half (yes it is a playgo (or perhaps an rg280v (or maybe an odroid-go-adance (or one of it's clones)))).
tl;dr: see first run-on sentence.

Are there easy to use dosbox frontends? I'm over 30 and only ever played games through stand alone emulators for gaming consoles and grew up with no pc gaming in my life and hardly any real console games I owned and are a neet to this day. As large of space newer pc games take up I generally don't even think about attempting to get them to work with cracks or whatever but dos games are small and I just realized today that elder scrolls is actually pretty old and 8mb big the first one is. I downloaded ampshell and the game and it kept crashing and I hate the idea of trying to remember code to type down, what was the point of the shell?
Also my father is even dumber than I am and wanted me to set up mame before and I failed hard on that. I just could not get it to work and on a machine he bought even that crashes a lot for his mame games and dos games I've seen crash too on those chinese 'emulator boxes'.
My life is bad enough with frustrating myself failing at computer technology in current years. I could learn 15 years ago on my windows 98 computer in hs that I got upon turning 18 but really I'm too burned out now days. Youtube does not help with computers as my computer is very neet tier, needs low rez to not lag so a 9 minute video becomes 20 minutes of trying to pause a lot and see what the higher rez monitor did on my lower rez of which is set to an even lower rez on youtube. Written tutorials seem to be for win3 and I've got win7, 32bits. So yeah....

Shouldn't people lead with convoluted stuff like this, a link to it? Because it's not worth the time. It's literally as easy to program pong in lua this sort of tier is. To start up a game you need to practically put the effort into learning real live computer programming. Tell me after 30 years it's still not like this?

Another day goes by that I cheated my way out of something...I'm happy I guess. I doubt many such pre-setup stuff will exist for other games I might want to download though so my gripe is still there really though at least I can try out pc gaming now. They have some cdemulator type thing that mounts cd's without having an actual cd and only an iso I read about on the piratebay so maybe I'll get some newer pc game later and hope that is just as easy. I always wanted to play Vampire The Masquerade Bloodlines after seeing people playing it when I was still an adolescent with no computer of my own. That and lots of other games I read about...
I'm still sad it's so convoluted though with how inefficient I've been in the last 1.5 decades of my life as a neet. If I ever got intelligent I'd like to have my pocketgo v1 running it's dosbox playing stuff but I shudder to think about how much configuration that'd take.
Honestly I've such learned helplessness that my IQ, low as it is, halves whenever feeling that something won't go well so I get flustered and panicky inside and never learn anything. That goes along with the other problems. Also about the pocketgo, the screen is so tiny that the text is almost impossible to read. Such a stressful life. Then there's the fact that the game(s) will be too hard anyway!

What's wrong with Manjaro? I've heard of some drama around donations and low hardening. All my (imaginary) friends advise switching to Void, but I'm afraid of hardware issues and the general immaturity of the system. And I'd also like to have LUKS from the box.
John Titor · 2021-09-05 10:03

Manjaro's dev team is very irresponsible, they have let certificates expire more than once so they announced to everyone that they have to set their system clock back (which is a horrible workaround if the system is being used as anything beyond a web browser). They have tried to hide things like that when they happen too, although I don't remember the specific examples because I don't follow distro drama much. The main issue I have with Manjaro is that it installs too much baloney that I don't need, and its repos are arguably equally unstable (equally likely to break something) as Arch's but less up-to-date. So there's really no good reason to use Manjaro. If Arch is too hard to install, EndeavourOS is essentially just Arch with a nice installer and update helper, so that's a better option.

I just realized what they were and how silly my comment there is...it's to run win3 in the dosbox. Neat and all, but now that I'm feeling better I felt like giving my post a hairy eyeball and that's retarded.
I wonder what one could do with that though other than geek out at it.
But yeah, I've never even seen a windows computer older than 9x in my 30ish years on account of being sheltered so it being a period between dos and win9x blue screened my brain there.
I had went for a walk and felt better. IT doesn't look all that complex really, I just hate trying new things. As slow as the stuff is though I don't think I'd bother with the pocketgo v1 doing things as even if it were set up right it'd be very slow on such a thing, though hilariously someone loaded up win3 on it and solitaire and minesweeper I think.
But yes I'm glad that the first Elder Scrolls has that nice setupexe that they made. The second has laggy sound and a very large resolution by default as well that annoys me having to change my resolution to a higher one with an external monitor on account of having such a potato even if the sound is not that bad.
First person games with a 'middle ages', or whatever, setting with a magic theme like shadowgate or Elder Scrolls really pumps my gonads in any case. And it is a small file that first one is. I wonder if it's raycasting? I wonder if Doom was sometimes and have watched people argue about it. Not that it matters to a baka like me, just neat looking for it's time. Not being able to look down means it's raycasting I'd imagine... maybe.

On second thought figured I'd come back to say that the thing refuses often to recognize the keyboard and or mouse properly. Also the screen resolution gets often randomly stuck lower and I have to fix it of which is annoying a bit and the newer one would NOT do it manually at all so I'd have to bring that one up and down. Randomly it will fix it or not fix it, the first, and randomly the mouse will work or not or keyboard will or not. So annoying. Perhaps some day I will 'get good' and not use such software. Maybe my computer's drivers are off. But yeah, no idea what triggers it.

Question on FreeBSD. Reading on its ports collection, it reminded me of the way Gentoo is handling packages. The way of doing it might be different, but conceptually they are simillar in that you download and build a package from source in an automated way with an easy way to customize the configuration beforehand (at least that's the impression I've gotten from reading a summary).
Does the comparison do it justice? And is it also possible to create your own ports simillar to ebuilds on Gentoo?

What are the system requirements for opengl and directx versions in regard to what gpu I should buy? I'm poor and only make 400 usd per year, 200 usd at a time, as an eternal neet with no governmental assistance. Not all gpu's even list it, they list the vram and frequency though of which won't help necessarily. The ones that list it are always overkill as I need opengl 3.3 and or directx11.1, not opengl 4 nor dx12. I plan on getting a compatible cpu with it that's over 3ghz and using that pc building website to show if it's compatible.

I'm using Debian 11 with an Nvidia graphics card and i386 CPU architecture. Keep in mind I know very little about linux. On my very recent install of this distro, I have come across two pretty annoying graphical problems: the resolution is set to 1024x768 and there is also some screen tearing. In the display settings the monitor is simply shown under the name "default" and the resolution can't be changed. When checking system information, it shows llvmpipe as GPU instead of the actual graphic card. This supposedly means that the computer is using the integrated GPU and the proper GPU at the same time to save resources. The only possible solution I have found is changing the driver from open source (nouveau as far as I could find out) to proprietary. I enabled contrib and non-free repos but then I found that I don't know which one I should install. In the end I downloaded a driver directly the Nvidia website which is probably the one that I need, but then the install showed an error that I need to stop running this "X server" thing which seems like an important program, the kind that gives you a black screen when you shut it down. I found a command that was supposed to stop the so-called "X-server", and turns out that it actually did because it gave me a black screen when I ran it.
Is there an easy solution I might have missed somewhere down the line or am I on the right path in trying to fix a problem to fix a problem to fix a problem?

You need to convert to another format like x264

The file will be bigger but it won't take 9000% CPU to decode.

Yes you run it overnight to convert your library. Your CPU is not fast enough to decode the high compression h265 in real time, that's why it lags. Either convert it to a less CPU intensive format or buy a faster CPU. What other answer were you expecting?

I've tried with a P8600 before using arch's libva-intel-driver-g45-h264.
It can play any 1080p h264 video with no framedrops[*] and 1080p x265 with minor framedrops[*] for scenes with really too much activity which is more of a uncompression problem however playback is just fine with a non-highly compressed x265 video (however those are large like 700MB for 30mins).
Here are the best things you could do on your system if you can't upgrade them yet:
>use arch
>upgrade to dual channel ram
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DDR3_SDRAM
If you have two rams with the other having lower bandwidth, consider just going single-channel with the higher bandwidth which offers better video performance. I tested this myself.
>set audio resampler to ffmpeg
>suspend compositor during video (automatic with kde)
>disable all mitigations[*]
The biggest problem I only had was after spectre and meltdown got patched, I noticed my laptop could no longer play back even 1080p h264 video when it had no framedrops even when I'm only using DDR2. Now both h264/x265 video would drop lots of frames if I installed arch over that laptop.
I guess the minimum requirement for htpc now is hd graphics with a high clock cpu (even pentium or celeron is fine).
Newer devices are in the cheap though, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_graphics_processing_units#Gen8
celeron/atom/pentium still have near-identical graphics performance but you might want a higher clock rate.

I guess duck is fine but safe isn't a fixed attribute.
Even gmail and some popular social netowrk used to be unsafe back in the days someone could recover your password by visiting some php recovery page pre2009.
Security practices are much better now so the safe part should be ignored and left in how safe the servers or if the supply chain is intact.
Privacy over the service provider is more the problem now. At least duck should be okay but be sure to read everything even though the startup kinda had some dark history https://desuarchive.org/_/search/text/%22names%20database%22/ however it's probably just some phase. It's probably the 'best option' right now if you're not doing anything wrong or questionable (since servers still abide by the local laws geographically).

So I started using audio DAC on linux.
It's quite good but there's a problem closely related to the kernel itself.
It's documented above but there's not much info, there's even something about ZC (Zero Cross) and I don't even know what that ZC's all about, search engines yield no result.
>>Playback pops in portable audio subsystems cannot be completely eliminated currently, however future audio codec hardware will have better pop and click suppression.
When will they implement this suppression :/
So this means linux is not ideal for audio production? I'm already getting issues when microphone starts during audio playback, whenever microphone (over USB dac) powers up, the audio gets choppy clicks and even the recording will be able to record that choppiness a few milliseconds in the file recordings.
What actually happens is my dac has an issue with linux exclusively I haven't tested with other OS aside from android and a linux distribution which makes it reproduce clicks whenever the music/signal dips.
I think the USB goes to powersave mode the same as how mouse goes idle/power-save when it's not moving (polling rate's also low during slow movement). I knew a fix before to force polling rates to stay at 125Hz which made mouse movements smoother. On USB dac I don't know how to implement the same thing.
One way to reproduce this is to play "Ticks" test signal from pulseeffects or easyeffects over a USB audio DAC.
The DAC would produce unnecessary clicks/pops from powersaving during dips. Even a track that goes mute mid-way will trigger the powersaving thing.
Adding another layer of test signal like a really low volume "Pink Noise" behind the "Ticks" or that "track that goes almost mute mid-way" stops the clicks/pops from happening so I'm pretty sure it's just USB going powersave and starting up (designed to save power for portable device?).
>>Pops and clicks are unwanted audio artifacts caused by the powering up and down of components within the audio subsystem.
Dujour · 2021-09-28 10:14
>>51306
I've also tried making the audio signal mono yet it still clicks. The clicks are leaning more on the right side the same clicks that happen when music stops playing.
>Red Noise test tone with easyeffects (0.01 volume) + 40% system audio + test track = no clicks
>test tone turned off + 40% system audio + test track = clicks
I made sure it's not a sample clock desync, I set to 48/44Khz and used different music players and nothing has changed.

What's a good Sata to USB3 enclosure?
I'm thinking of recasing my small HDD since its Sata to USB3 controller only reports (logical/physical) 512/512 sector with smartctl (however hdparm reports 512/4096 sector) clearly the original enclosure emulates 512, any ideas which enclosures can support 4K and doesn't do emulation? I'm using the other drive as internal drive and it runs at 512/4096 - it's also AF format drive as seen with the HDD sticker so it benefits much more with having a filesystem formatted with 4096B sectors which it cannot do with the original enclosure.
Is Orico good?
I also plan on going SSDs in future but I doubt my motherboard or even Sata enclosures would handle very modern 4K formats (like or 4224B or other substandard ones). I guess it's wiser to pick something like 128GB instead of 120GB SSDs right?

Fingerprint readers are just a convenience thing more than a security measure. They aren't very difficult to defeat so it's a vulnerability to anyone who has enough time and desire to copy your print. A removable one is probably better in that it wont be tied directly to your device and can be removed but depending how it'ssset up if you lose it you could be totally screwed. Personally Id be concerned about getting locked out from a fibger injury.

No, LFS is a book that teaches how to build a distro from source (manually), Gentoo offers well-maintained software repositories and the building process is automated (just edit your USE flags and emerge the package). The only way to make LFS feasible is to use Guix or Pkgsrc, and even then it's a hassle and not worth when Gentoo exists. I know that this question is considered rather silly, but still, how to choose the right VPN?
I got interested in this question, because most sites describing different services just advertise one of them, and many VPN services have no privacy policy at all, or it says that logs will be kept and transferred to third parties "to improve our services". Even those who "don't keep any logs" (like protonmail) suddenly find ip-addresses at the request of Switzerland or other authorities, and then make excuses.
I need good speed, so that I could safely do everyday things on the Internet, read articles, sometimes watch YouTube or other videos, without waiting for pages to load for 30 seconds.
How can I find the right VPN? Or are there any alternatives where you don't have to trust your internet connection to a third party?

You might as well use that same money you'd spend over VPN to just acquire a separate throwaway internet service where you can get your copyrighted material.
In my place it costs about $10 to get a throwaway 3G/4G/5G that hovers around 40mbps/month with 4G and about 20mbps with 3G so maybe that's just as good as buying "premium vpn which can still be tied back to you" since you're using home internet and the fact that they can reassociate your traffic back to you through timestamps and I got no time explaining the methods but it's very possible to track something and there's also the possibility of your packets manipulated with client (proprietary router) and isp side DPI data.
VPN companies may also block you or close ports when you generate too much vpn traffic or it could be in some block list already and they can use that as anchor to break your internet privacy (lets say you had downloaded copyrighted material or you didn't some vpn user from another country did, and you got absurd local laws, this would mean they will now be actively logging your internet as much as they like because of such reason and you don't want that right? VPN isn't about anonymity fyi, it only adds security over encapsulation of transparent ports/requests).
>Palemoon
Pale moon had a huge history of malware they don't want to talk about. At some point their archive servers got compromised (maybe officially?) and had a clipboard logging malware that targeted cryptocurrencies. The binaries they provide is also questionable and if you're serious about privacy and security you should instead build palemoon from source.

You say that like cellular operators are not the first to throttle, block ports and generally disrespect any kind of traffic that's not headed towards facebook servers. Using cell modem for torrenting is the dumbest idea ever just for that fact. A VPN server in country that slacks off DMCA letters is still a better choice. Governments don't look for torrents usually, copyright trolls do, then they send a request to company and start legal prosecution in country of origin. Your %countryname% copyright trolls will never scan foreign IPs, there's plenty of idiots pirating Photoshop in corporate environments, something where actual court cases can be won and sweet copyright money extracted.

trolls mostly exist in germany and US.
>cellular operators are not the first to throttle, block ports and generally disrespect any kind of traffic
then why not use a free private network?
>Using cell modem for torrenting is the dumbest idea ever just for that fact.
that's dumb, in fact I was able to just simply use internet years ago without having to pay a dime over modems.
a lot of people where I live do the same but do worse, I didn't do copyrighted torrents though as I wasn't really into mainstream capesoykaf or movies but it just werks as I've torrented few linux distros at fast speeds.
>block ports
you're not thinking outside the box, it's blocked to begin with. you need to find a way. even the possibility that you can authenticate 3G/4G means you're connected to the cloud so you're only left with tunneling your entire connection over a certain port they forgot to block or weren't meant to be blocked at all.
I think it got even worse now due to DPI but I think I can still pull it off if I tried.

Redmond 97 does even better job than Chicago95, it even has no-CSD version and some prebuilt color schemes, MS Plus and custom ones.
To style Qt apps, set Qt theme engine to "gtk2". About getting Xfce rid of CSD, there was ArchWiki's guide in Xfce article. Replace xfwm with Marco for gradients in title bars. (i recommend this)
Now i will ask a question: any best apps for Android to de-duplicate my pics? Proprietary ones will be fine too.

In Russia, it's just enough to run your torrent traffic through Tor (only for BT trackers) to pull an Uncaught Joe. Fine even for ©'d content.

I updated to OpenBSD 7.0 today and the kernel isn't compiling.
After running syspatch and sha256 -h /var/db/kernel.SHA256 /bsd ,this is what my relink.log looks like:
(SHA256) /bsd: OK
LD="ld" sh makegap.sh 0xcccccccc gapdummy.o
ld -T ld.script -X --warn-common -nopie -o newbsd ${SYSTEM_HEAD} vers.o ${OBJS}
LLVM ERROR: out of memory
PLEASE submit a bug report to https://bugs.llvm.org/ and include the crash backtrace.
Stack dump:
...
Abort trap (core dumped)
*** Error 134 in /usr/share/relink/kernel/GENERIC.MP (Makefile:1788 'newbsd': @echo ld -T ld.script -X --warn-common -nopie -o newbsd '${SYS...)
I tried checking some forums and mailing lists, but this seems to be unique. I couldn't find much information on LLVM either.
Any help is appreciated.

yeah but if I can make a decent amount of money by doing next to nothing than that's a win for me. Are you saying that it's mostly hype? Not trying to put words in your mouth just want a little bit more clarity.

ofc it's hype. It has it's use cases but the soykaf they're trying to pull now is far beyond what it's good for.

how hard would it be to rip ms paint, snip tool, and wordpad from an iso and port it over to openbsd?
Emmanuel · 2021-11-03 10:55
My Bluetooth headphones disconnect from Bluez when there isn't audio playing over them.
So far I’ve just been opening Firefox and putting a “gentle wind” video on 10% volume, but that kinda is like kicking dead whales down the beach and also sometimes I hear the wind and forget I have wind open and get freaked out.
Is there any way to fix this, or at least work around it in a slightly less “makeshift” way?

>how hard would it be to rip ms paint, snip tool, and wordpad from an iso and port it over to openbsd?
For Windows executables you need something like Wine and that's not a real port. You either need to find alternatives (ms paint => Gimp, Krita or Pinta. Snip tool => Scrot. wordpad => libreoffice, abiword or a simple Mark Down/org-mode file) OR you need to create clones of those programs.

coudlnt I grab the source from the iso and compile it on openbsd?
Neuromancer · 2021-11-03 16:11

Not OP but these are all non-answers. Nothing was asked about using a Windows executable, finding alternatives, or writing the clone yourself.

>source
What source? Botnet 10 is not open-source. Also. Windows programs likely use different headers and libraries (that are non-free).
>>53108
Learn to read >>53101 used the word "rip". That means to extract the .exe files and get them working on OpenBSD. Of course you can just extract/mount the .iso file, but don't expect to get the full source code. Even if you had the full source code for MS paint, you couldn't just compile it because as I said, they depend on windows-only stuff. You probably can use Wine to get the MS paint.exe working but that's not a port.

I have come to a problem with displaying java application window correctly whether it's run from Eclipse or Intellij using Cinnamon.
When I run the built app it shows nothing but a small glitch of a window. I'm running this under Hidpi display scaling enabled (2x scaled) on 14" qhd laptop. When I turn additional hidpi scaling off the application window is shown correctly.
Here is a short video demonstrating mentioned problem: https://ufile.io/b76dreyt
thus far I'm forced to use Gnome and therefore am in a need to rise upon a horizone again

Hello. I am looking for a labtop/labdock like device that has a screen + keyboard + trackpad all together. I travel a bit and need to take my tower with me but I do not want to bring a monitor+keyboard+mouse everywhere. I looked at KVM consoles but I do not think they will work for me.

How good is the longevity/reliability on character LCD's? Are they all built the same or does reliability differ based on size since most projects that use them wouldn't need more than a 2x16. They look like the part people would have a few spares of so I'm queasy about them more than I normally am about parts.
If they're not good or there's something better what would Lainons recommend?

How bad of an idea is it to buy a cheap projector, for, say, 100€ to kind of do a popup cinema with friends? I recently saw that they go really cheap on aliexpress and similar shops, now I am fascinated by the idea of going somewhere (for example unused room in university) and have some fun watching a movie together. I could also use it at home if it is good, because I have a white wall.
Are those projectors any good or should I not do this? I don't have the money for a proper one, but compared to a laptop screen this should be better right? What should I watch out for when choosing one, what are the specs to look at? Any advice would be great, thank you!

I tried to off and on for years get a pi to be my daily driver but it never dual boots with composite out, things like noobs don't work. I tried lakka and it won't work at all on the pi 3 I just got via composite so with how when I had a zero I never fixed that without nightly i just gave up on it and then later using pinn to combine it to another OS for book reading. Instead i installed raspbian and then tried to install libretro and it's frontend retroarch. Then:
"Error creating SDL window!
Could not initialize OpenGL / GLES library
Renderer failed to initialize!
Window failed to initialize!"
That is as far as I've gotten trying to install on top of Raspbian. There's too much stress in my life to continue trying to get this to work. Is there an sd splitter that can work that won't need to be unplugged to switch between OS's? I think retropie on it's own can work and raspbian but I can't get this done without help.

>>53263 (me) told the gui to fuarrrk off in it's settings and now it can load without gui. People should make guides that include that step along with startx to get back to the gui. Wish I had a usb splitter for it so I could (easily) do something with it now.... then again a new battery too. It's current isn't enough volts/amps despite the seller claiming that it was a 3amp 5v output and the battery claming it as well. Constant power warnings with just one thing plugged into it. Despicable. Part of what had me too stressed to think, the parents complaining, the food on fire, dreading 'needing' to use ssh to transfer files when putty didn't work with a pi zero I had last time I tried 3 years ago, etc. I'm going to try to enable usb transfer once I get the splitter. If the splitter does not work I'm forgoing retroarch and using just mednafen though mednafen has dick psx file disc switching I've heard where you have to make a file to switch discs. This is why windows is better. i can't wait until I have a beta build of ReactOS to install on some small computer 20 years from now. Or 50. However long it takes.

Is it based on amplitude or something else? For instance, would playing silence in Audacity work?
