Laser guns

I like laser guns. Do you like permablindness weapons?(USER WAS WARNED FOR THIS POST, Rule 4 VIolation, Please elaborate on your subject material, your OP is terrible and the thread so far is also terrible, I don't want to have mop it up again.)
Netrunner · 2021-06-02 00:58
>>46675 As an expert in lasers, I am deeply concerned by this thread. Also why did you have to kill a thread for this lain :( plz If you think these are toys, you should probably not be anywhere around them, even more so if you want to use them to hurt or injure people. Treating lasers like toys is the same as people pointing loaded guns at each other for fun and saying "its harmless, my finger isn't on the trigger" Don't make me break out laser rekt photos
Emmanuel · 2021-06-02 01:03
Also that snowy image... snow can reflect lasers and if you are in the ocular hazard distance you can still get the blind. If you put a magnified optic like the one picture, I assume the first blurry one is an eotech, but the other one looks magnified unless its just a soykafty ACOG or something, you run the risk of severe ocular damage like how you put a magnifying glass under the sun. to be honest I hate that I understand why the FDA made lasers difficult to obtain, and typing this I am filled with rage about normeees who ruined my hobby.

The Phantom Phreak · 2021-06-02 23:01
>>46729 Part of it is the way the OP is phrased, lasers are really cool but it seems too forward with "use these lasers to permanently injure feds" that are reminiscent of incitement or glorifying violence, rather than a less aggressive discussion: "are lasers useful in protests? I think they are underutilized, we usually only ever seen handheld ones that distract riot police and pilots, like in the recent Bolivia protests".
Miho Iwakura · 2021-06-02 23:04
There was a thread here a while ago about those police robots that resemble large dogs, can their optical censors be protected against lasers?
H.R. Giger · 2021-06-02 23:33
>>46744 There's been some relatively recent success in anti-drone usage of lasers.
Sabo Engle · 2021-06-02 23:53
>>46745 Electro-Optical coatings make laser defense super easy. They are also the reason militarized optics cost a gorrilion dollars instead of the cheap off the shelf cost (like your go-pro 4k camera). Many coatings are trade secret though, especially doped optics. I don't know about the specific optic in question, but Laser defense has been a concern since IIRC as early as the 80s, if not earlier. IIRC there was also a phase where many modern armies tried using directed energy weapons as the wave of the future, but findings were that power generation, cooling, and atmospheric effects (rain/fog/dust) all reduce the effectiveness in combat, and the problem with reflection remains a hazard to unprotected troops. >private snuffy takes off his laser goggles because they fogged up, and takes a reflected beam straight to the eye In the examples of >>46744 who discusses the use in protests, One of the problems is blinding protesters, and causing irreversible damage. The secondary effect is people might stop going to protests if they expected to go blind. Distributing laser eye protection also becomes a costly matter, and sunglasses do not provide protection. I used to provide safety demonstrations to people using lasers, and people would ask why they can't just wear sunglasses to protect from lasers and I would set up a laser and show how it just goes right through. >>46746 Those are very expensive lasers. The difficulty becomes output vs. mobility, and if you are hand carrying or using electronic tracking and engagement. The first pic is a military laser weapon, the second is one of my favorite demonstration pictures of potential damage, IIRC it was a rabbit eye hit with an IR laser (I can't find the written explanation of it right now). Note that the Glare LA-9/P has a secondary safety attachment that detects safe firing range and will disable if the target gets close enough to cause damage (within the NOHD). >>46732 >They are not toys, they are not hobbies, they are weapons fuarrrk you, they are also industrial and scientific instruments and are also extremely practical in detecting IED tripwires. Misusing lasers as a weapon is also treated as deadly force in many cases, and in some states lasing someone will also land you in jail the same as if you were to shoot them or stab them, and in some cases people are justified in shooting you if you lase them. wearing tin foil shiny side out might make useful mirrored laser armor, laserlain should test this Present Day, Present Time! AHAHAHAHAHA!

>>46758 Except you know that you can't see near ir and I doubt you can stop a drone before it uses it's onboard facial recognition to blind you
Spike Spiegel · 2021-06-03 01:39
>>46753 There are already laws because of people like you. Its illegal to buy class 4 laser pointers because people thought it was funny to permanently blind people who pissed them off. It's like going around stabbing peoples eyes out because they called you a glitterboy and thinking that is acceptable. Instead of making it permit based, you just CAN'T buy high powered handheld lasers. Sites will still sell them, but customs often seizes them and writes you a letter about how you fuarrrked up. A few laser sites that I am not even going to mention got wrapped up in a whole legal battle and stopped selling any laser over class 3.

>>46769 After a certain point the output simply makes looking anywhere near the user an extreme risk hazard.
Undisclosed · 2021-06-03 02:55
>>46768 We are specifically talking about you standing in the middle of a crowd and shining a visible laser at the police. In that situation the only thing that can protect you is the police being too pussy to do their jobs. But yeah I'm sure you'd prefer to be far away and with an invisible laser, like the fuarrrking pussy glitterboy tranny subhuman you are.
藤原純一 · 2021-06-03 02:57
>>46771 Naw i prefer scatters. This one combines near ir, red and blue/purple to create a laser that's extremely hard to defeat with most commercial and military eye protection.
Masami Eiri · 2021-06-03 02:59
>>46772 Oh and widebeams. Widebeams like scatters can do their job instantly with very little aiming required, although unlike scatters are limited to ranges of about 100 yards instead of thousands of feet.
Ivan Petrov · 2021-06-03 03:01
>>46769 >>46770 So in other words a tool that poses just as much harm to the user and allies around them as to its intended target. I fail to see how lasers strong enough to do the things you want them to do aren't the most useless kind of double-edged sword.

Elliot Alderson · 2021-06-03 03:09
>>46781 That's the biggest takeaway I actually have from my laser weapons. Even if something isn't illegal if you try to change a paradigm people will actively try to supress and silence you. If lasers bother you, did you know you can make a sonic blinder/killer, and you can even buy them on eBay?
Liet Kynes · 2021-06-03 03:10
>>46783 Discussion of completely legal weapons and their use is not a crime. It's not my fault the government forgot to ban these weapons.

So you're either 'four chang's' laseranon or a fed larper. Either way it is clear you don't get l a i n c h a n. p.o.l-ethics and associated terminology are frowned on here. Think cyberpunk - non-political technology for the little dude. For example: How does such a laser device work projecting messages through a stencil over a mile away? Is it a viable "non-vandalising remote graffiti 'meme-sniping' system" for projecting memes on a distant wall? How viable is it for modulating encrypted communications like optical digital systems? Have you attempted a high-security low-eavesdropping comms system by transfering data between systems in the infrared wavelength range? Have you considered how this could be used to relay information on law enforcement strategies employed at a protest between disparate groups at that protest? What would you consider the result of such secure-spy-proof communication to be? Would it make Stingray type spying systems obsolete? Is it a viable technique for communicating with and flying a drone? Doesn't this make such a drone control system impervious to all current jamming systems? If not, why? Is it a viable technique for fishing in a survival situation? etc...
