What laptops do Lainons use?

Just another Random Lainon · 2021-03-01 14:31
I got pic related as a gift and god do I hate it. Anything over 5 tabs makes it heat up and life off and it's just so bad in general and is just expensive cause it's pretty. I had thinkpad X230s before but although they were alright they heated up badly as well. What's my next laptop? Are there any even good laptops left in 2021? Obviously there's thinkpads I could look into like the T480 but even then their a bit dated. Macbooks are apparently soykaf with soykaf OS, Dells suffer from everything, etc. - What laptops do lainons use? I'm a developer if that helps and I like having a lot of tabs open and lots of vscode work. I want good battery life and not horrible heating and fans and not gamer soykaf.
Emmanuel · 2021-03-01 14:42
>>42567 >T480 >dated What are you talking about? Coffee Lake isn't much different from modern Intel CPUs besides the fact it's 14nm vs the current 10nm node that Intel's been rolling out. Put an SSD in that bastard and it'll be good for another decade. t. using an x240 that's still fast even on Winblows
Aristóteles Amadópulus · 2021-03-01 14:50
>>42568 Yeah honestly T480 might be one of my best options. But mostly what I meant was how there is no good modern laptops which is insane how the only good laptops now are old thinkpads. So do I have any other options beside a T480 though? Honestly it looks like it has EVERYTHING I ever need. > Perfect keyboard that I loved on x230 > Insane Battery Upgrade Potential > Good Linux/Windows Compatibility > Port and IO Selection > 14 Inches and not tiny 13 inches and not big 15 inches
Bob Arctor · 2021-03-01 14:54
These are the things I hate about the XPS 13 9300 if that helps narrow down options Don't Like: > Starts heating up insanely and it's tiny fans sound so annoying when you have more than 5 browser tabs, or something like vscode or discord open. I'm a huge multi tasker so it's important I can keep a bunch of stuff open like in a desktop > No IO available except two soykafty usb c ports and the charger itself has a fan that heats up badly > turns into an electric magnet while its charging to where you can feel the electricity with your hand if you touch the chassis since its so thin > Battery is advertised as 10 hours but gets 2-3 at most cause of the heating and fans. > Can't program for soykaf on it withour burning my fingers from the heat with vscode open

>>42569 Maybe a Dell Latitude or HP EliteBook? They're not quite as good as a ThinkPad, but they usually run for much cheaper since they don't have the brand recognition, I guess. p.s. post in the thinkpad thread next time, this board is very slow so each thread counts
Tomohisa "Tom" Kanezaki · 2021-03-01 14:57
>>42571 If I posted in the ThinkPad thread though I would only get people recommending to buy thinkpads Regarding Dell latitudes I probably would never buy a dell again. I've had many and they just suffer from insane heating and fans although solid looking laptops.
Chan Siu Ming · 2021-03-01 14:59
>>42572 it's for other business laptops too, but i understand the confusion. anyways, HP still has great office hardware (compared to their consumer-level junk) if you need more power than intel HD graphics, check out their Zbook line
Incognito · 2021-03-02 21:43
I have a thinkpad T440. Only thing I dislike is the touchscreen. It's presence means people will want to touch it, while I want to keep its value.
Spooky · 2021-03-02 22:12
>>42567 Using a T480 to type this - upgraded from an x230 with a dead battery. It's fantastic - pretty much the "last true thinkpad" since it's quite upgradable and has the dual battery system. All around fantastic machine. Should be able to find components and batteries for years to come.
John Titor · 2021-03-03 07:51
>>42567 Currently using a Dell XPS 13 9310 without any issues. Get decent 6-8 hours on battery while doing some light lisp coding in VS Code and writing technical manuals (my day job). Not done much work with compiled languages on it but I'd imagine that wouldn't be too fun. If you put the laptop in sleep mode when the lid is shut it can spiral into heat death and quite a lot of the time IO just doesn't work properly, but since I bought it mainly for portability it's not too bothersome for me and a reboot fixes most things. I also have a Thinkpad X200s which I don't use for much because it's an underpowered chunky thing, but its keyboard is delightful and I'm gutted that they stopped making it with the X220 series. For work I also use an M1 Macbook Pro. The less said the better.

>>42703 I should specify: I'm not having issues *right now*. I do have issues.

I have got Ideapad L340 with i7-9750HF proccessor and GTX 1650 gpu. It is okay to play games and do general daily stuff. For coding it is great too but there is a big flaw. Battery lasts only 3 hours with -100 undervolt. Other than that it is really solid af and easily fixable/repairable. Keyboard is really great. Almost comfy as thinkpads. For 400-600 budget it is the hands down best laptop I've ever used. Also it looks like a normal laptop not like those flashy dumb "gamer" laptops. [By meaning fixable/repairable I really meaned it. It is easy to open and put hard-drive or replace ram[only one ram slot sadly] also it is not too hard to apply thermal paste.)

Thinkpad™ T60 with Void Linux Not pic related >Good enough to attend classes on web MS Teams >Discord uses too much CPU so it forced me to use qTox >3G of RAM is enough for the CPU (Core Duo T7200) >Can watch 720p videos (even Netflix) >Yesterday I spilled grape juice on the keyboard and it's still working. >Lacks OpenGL support so I can't play Open Arena
Morpheus · 2021-03-04 18:03
I have a modern ThinkPad X1 Carbon, it's been good

>>42709 >Lacks OpenGL support so I can't play Open Arena Literally what?
Project 2501 · 2021-03-05 17:15
i've got a thinkpad s340. barely any usb ports, no ethernet, 5~ hour battery and heated up like crazy when i had windows on it. ever since i moved to artix, it's been generally very cool though. the best part of this laptop is how slim it is, but that comes at the cost of the build quality feeling kinda flimsy. i don't doubt that i'll get rid of it for something older and sturdier later on, but it does its job as a computer for now.
Lady Jessica · 2021-03-05 19:21
>>42787 Have all the modern thinkpads gone this direction? I don't see why a business would use them. Or is that just a "consumer" oriented model?
Nguoi La · 2021-03-05 19:35
What does Lain think of Tuxedo Computers? They're a little pricey, but they're not mass produced in China and the prices seem more fair than System76. They sell some thick ones and both Intel and AMD. I don't think I would be able to handle "Battery life approx. 5 hours with min. brightness in idle mode" though.
Spooky · 2021-03-06 16:11
Most laptops nowadays suck ass. I'm not going to buy one unless I get it for free (or is workplace-issued). I've also heard that Lenovo is making Thinkpads less repairable. >>42709 Discord is cancer. >>42787 Is that even a Thinkpad? It looks like a modern version of an HP Elitebook. >>42790 Aren't they just refurb? Or is it actually a manufacturing company?
Unspecified · 2021-03-07 02:14
>>42567 You should think again about gamer soykaf Asus gaming laptops are looking really good and they're getting rid of the soykafty aesthetic too I use an Acer Aspire 7 with i5 9300h and gtx 1650 its nothing special at all but easy to maintain it has average build quality but decent cooling and 4 hours of battery
fsociety · 2021-03-07 12:14
i feel bad for caring about privacy yet getting a macbook air for the allure of it(and the locked down but efficient m1) like i use debian on my main pc, but a locked nightmare of privacy as my laptop. Its such a good laptop though, instant unlock, great kb, amazing screen, but like, fuarrrk, i should have gotten an hp laptop instead probably.
Arisu Mizuki · 2021-03-08 22:45
>>42842 How restrictive and closed is the M1? I've yet to own an Apple product but the M1 seems alluring. Does the brew package manager improve it much?

I have a Thinkpad P1 Gen 2 because I do weird ass simulation work but with the overall "Thinkpadness" of the machine is something I'm not satisfied with. Nothing like the old ones imho.
Unidentified · 2021-03-09 21:26
That looks gay as fuarrrk. You should just buy a thinkpad. It's more than a meme. Best laptop keyboard, best looks.

I want to sell my MBP 2018 because I don't like macOS anymore, do you reckon the xps9300 would be better with 16gb of ram

Using PineBook Pro for 200$. It's not fast like other notebooks, but for school stuff it's enough. There are switches for camera, microphone and Wi-Fi/BT. Not physical unfortunately, but supposedly power to these modules are controlled by keyboard FW and OS has no way to enable it. Also official Debian should be available since Debian 11.
sage · 2021-03-16 23:41
>>43084 XPSes are nice, I have a 9360 and it's bretty gud. However, I'd suggest buying used, since that at least doesn't support the global supply chain (which relies on slavery in Africa and China). If you can figure out a way to buy new without supporting it, go ahead.

>>42896 brew improves it a lot, but a lot of terminal-side scripts cant work with apples emulation lkayer. brew still works great on it, as it has been ported, but some stuff only works partially, for example the yabai tiling manager, the main manager works but its scripting addition doesnt. also if you use 32 bit apps/games, they wont work because of post catalina macos not supporting 32 bit. its still really powerful and the instant unlock, great battery life kinda make it a nice experience. if you disable sip you can fuarrrk with it as well to an extent. personally i like it sf, brew is a very great package manager imo and having a laptop that both work with my creative needs yet has some modularity and terminal support
Mentat · 2021-04-03 19:00
Is it even worth getting a new laptop nowadays? I used to have a thinkpad t430 that I'd use to make fun projects on but recently it died on me ans I've been forces to dual boot Linux on my gaming laptop that looks like a spaceship but I'm constantly anxious that it will break down too. I just need something that can do basic programming projects for fun and school stuff.
