want a good flip phone, something that respects my privacy as much as possible. obviously no cell phone will completely respect my privacy, but what's the best I can get on the modern market?

I'm considering getting a new CPU soon, but the one I want is has a 45W TDP, and my PC is only made for 35W processors. Will it be able to handle it?

Does anyone have a valid guide on how to fully encrypt a raspberrypi (possibly on raspberry os)? Have been looking for days on different search engines but haven't managed to find a working guide.

In fact the only reason I'm trying this is because I saw a video of some dude putting a Xeon in his. It was also rated for 45w, but he never took the time to actually measure the temps (and never did any testing under load either)

hey lains have this machine at work that has some buttons want to be able to trigger buttons with arduino but dont know the name of the part that i need maybe a relais? but for low current what is '?' in the picture
Spooky · 2021-01-15 22:35
>>40225 if you want it to work for any machine then you'll need to use one of those slow and expensive relais. most buttons, however, are either simple pullup or pulldown, if you know which and what voltage then you can hook the arduino onto one of those wires directly, or use a transistor. procedure: 1) measure voltage on the wires 2) press button, and note how voltage changes 2 a) voltage on both lines becomes high 2 b) voltage on both lines becomes low The arduino's job is to replicate this, so it could be as simple as putting your 5V gpio onto one of the wires and writePin(High) when you need to. If the arduino doesn't provide enough voltage or current, you'll have to figure out how transistors work.

The Oracle · 2021-01-19 19:38
>>40185 So it's only "network" privacy? Just get a proper senior phone. It's not that private really (but then again the recipient would be a smartphone leaking your conversations). There's still tracking and susceptibility to fake cells (unless you plan on using phone with apps to verify fake cells) and it's been a huge zero day since day one. At least you'll have something better with a removable battery. Check with your local telecom providers too. They might be dropping support for 3g or something in 5-10 years so a 4g phone might be good enough.

Are any of you guys using it? I'd like to be able to test it out, however my PC is likely far too weak to run it at a reasonable speed with only two cores. Once my new Xeon comes in, this shouldn't be a problem. Anyway, for those who have, what was it like? How does VM performance compare to something such as KVM or VirtualBox? Are they managed neatly?
Koichiro · 2021-01-20 18:05
>>40478 >what is it like? good >performance? my PC is noticeably louder and I can't run too many applications simultaneously but most things run paravirtualized, so they're much faster than KVM and use less memory >are they managed neatly? Yeah, they have a Qube Manager that's really handy. If you're not familiar with linux internals it could be hard to customize.

>>40136 Why does windows7 32bit not like putty in current year? I cannot connect it to my raspberry pi (zero), the ssh feature. It also hates samba and I could not get that to work. The win7 32bit crashed once during a lan scan to try to find out what the pi address was, outside of raspbian I don't have a way to get lakka's, unless they are the same address. I had ssh enabled in raspbian but it still did not let putty access it. My goal was to get the audio to work through a circuit I've soldered to make it have audio while using the composite video through a tiny speaker I salvaged with the parts I also salvaged. But I hear not sound. I've had the pi for 3 years so it has beyond pissed me off. It's made me appreciate andriod devices despite their spying dystopian ways. I could have bought several android's for the pi's price. But that's not the question. >how to fix samba in win7 32bit >how to fix audio in pi zero without ssh >how to fix ssh in win7 >how to fix putty in win7 >how to know if removal of the cmos is going to break a laptop by making it forget drivers to the keyboard and such That last is because I'm stuck on windows otherwise, am locked out of the boot order. All this is doing is making me hate linux and pi's more and more as time goes on. The issues I run into. A month ago or so I figured it can't hurt to install picore to the pi, but the modules never got installed no matter what I tried and I even bothered their forum over it. The wifi modules you need before the gui shows up. I wanted a non-bloatware os for the zero to read books, txt files. Lakka can't do it, so I needed two os's. As it is noobs version of lakka cannot work with composite, so I had to use two sd's and then only raspbian has audio that way with composite. It is quite the dumpster fire. Another lain was helping me through the resent attempts to fix it up to be an umpc of some value but so far I have failed to get it to be one. It is a silent emulation machine, and you'd have to take it apart to switch os's as I needed nightly on that second sd. And it's silent. Unacceptable. The bloatware raspbian can't even boot up with noobs until you press enter as noobs can't output to the composite itself. The lakka stays in a boot loop if you change blind the os choice, on that first sd. My first lcd was the many gpio kind with driver issues. Lakka cannot use it, so I abandoned that. That and I find soldering not very fun and that's a lot to solder, those many pin type of lcd's. I spend 200+ on perhipherals and are a neet so I hate throwing this away, but for my mental health I might have to cope with androids at some point and leave behind the notion of cool umpc's as the ones that would work will be 500+ usd and with that awful win10, so androids make more sense at that point. This pi stuff has been nothing but trouble even while spending this much money on it. Oh, one thing was a sound card via usb, but while treating it with care the first I bought broke and so I don't even really want to buy another. The hdmi splitter froze the pi. The circuit I made has no use so far, not without ssh working, so the main issue I have now that I assume blocks me is the lack of ssh ever working nor samba. I'd turn off my firewall but I know I'd just forget to turn it back on at some point and get mega-hax'd, so I hope that's not the issue. tl;dr: my pi zero is still not a mobile pc after three years of owning it due to a sound obstacle lakka has (raspbian can use bluetooth headsets and the damaged usb sound card but lakka cannot but neither the circuit I made for pwm audio) ssh does not work via putty on my windows7 32bit

Hello I don't know a lot about networking but my gateway address is 192.168.1.1. I can log into my router through this address, and I am using the default name server. For kicks I decided to go to 192.168.0.1 when lo! I am brought to a login page for Arris which looks like pic related. What could this be? My hosts file contains nothing relevant, my router does not have this address, and is a Netgear router, so I was wondering if someone could explain this strange phenomenon.

To do this, go to about:config and create a new rule called network.http.useragent.global_override type string, and put network.http.useragent.global_override as value restart palemoon, and it shold work

Any ideas on how to INCREASE USB latency on Windows 10? I need to add around 7-8 milliseconds of latency on a specific USB port to get 3d stereo glasses perfectly in sync with a TV. Hubs I have introduce negligible <0.5ms latency, chaining won't help.

>>40580 Either of the two: >They modded the firmware which means the default password might be not default and it's just a reskinned CPE login. If ARRIS is a internet provider they might have just made a reskin but I don't think it is an ISP. >The CPE login is a man-in-the-middle attack AND/OR that your router just acts as something like a switch/hub/extender I'm not saying that you're under attack but what I mean is your router just acts as if it's a switch/hub/extender and the actual router is someway farther and it is an ARRIS equipment. Once you lose internet connection, you might also lose gateway connection and ping to 192.168.1.1 so keep that in mind, if gateway connection is lost upon downtime then that confirms this. This means you do not have any control over your router and the ARRIS device is actually a different company router that you are "interfacing" from far away which means you can't modify it or even your own Netgear settings (or they can do it more easily for you, like setting up port forward for you) but also means they can intercept anything they want because you're just using a switch/hub/extender.

What do you guys think about crowdfunding a p2p messenger? I have few ideas how to make it simple, easily audible and without the offline-problem. I mean the problem when messages are not delivered if recipient was offline, then sender goes offline and then receiver goes online. It should be very cheap because it's p2p and we don't need huge servers that work perfectly on highload. /g made tox once so it's possible. Of couse I'll donate too and messenger concept can be changed if you have some better ideas.

I had run Lynis, a system-hardening auditor. At its suggestion, I changed numerous permissions system-wide. I have also changed conf files that alter book-time permissions. The following problems have occured: 1) Upon reboot, my /dev/snd is in a state that makes ALSA fail to recognize the audio devices. My user is in audio. The only way to make ALSA recognize the /dev/snd devices is to add setguid, which resets upon boot 2) My /var/lib is bonked. I am unable to run clamscan because clamscan can not access the bytecode files. Again, I can fix it with chmod which changes on the reboot. I am unsure if there are other issues. I have not yet come accross them. I changed my umask back to default, thoug my understanding on umask is that it only affects the /home directory. My fault is not logging what Lynis told me to do, and what I did in response. I did not realize that hardening my system permissions would cause this. >>41093 Either you are using a laptop with the following: >broken OR unofficial battery There are proprietary pins that check authenticity OR your battery broke and the laptop decides not to overcharge the cells for safety >broken OR unofficial power brick Either the wire or something in the brick broke or it was not official and the laptop detected it. Usually it's listed in the BIOS info. Sometimes chargers may emit proprietary signal or some workaround to identify authenticity (for example apple and samsung bumps up phone/tablet chargers to 5.1 volts so fake 5.0v chargers become slow or unable to power up devices)

A couple of friends and I want to rent a VPS server together for a couple websites, and maybe an email server. What should I look for to make sure i'm getting a good deal? what should I be expected to pay?
Spooky · 2021-02-05 20:12
>>41383 Average budget VPS start around $5/mo. I use ramnode and while their management tooling isn't as good as bigger providers like digitalocean, they're a better value and their support has been consistently excellent every time I've contacted them. Trying to make a web archiver alias/script to archive for example https://mitpress.mit.edu/sites/default/files/sicp/index.html Wget has an option -p --page-requisites which is supposed to fetch all files so the page could be viewed offline, but when I try to open index.html in the browser it still connects to licensebuttons.net and creativecommons.org. Question: how to archive a page properly? Can't find a similar option for httrack, is there a way to archive a page that would make it completely viewable offline?

>>41358 Just linking to a list of CVEs, and especially comparing a popular program with a less widely used one that gets significantly less audits, is a very misled argument. Aside from the last 3 "sudoedit"-related CVEs that were fixed about as quickly as the feature was introduced, most of these CVEs are misconfigurations by programs that use sudo or things that only happen if you enable some non-default features. Just make sure you don't have sudo retain your password as that's a very common attack vector, and that's about everything you can do. Both sudo and su allow any local attacker to just brute force your password by spawning a bunch of processes to overcome the delay after a wrong password. Idk how doas works.

I see that this particular section of computing is extremely valuable and kind of exclusive, at least in my country. Although I know nothing and I'm a tech trainee pleb, I want to become an expert in this subject. If you are at univ - get related classes if you can. If not - seek courses/training or whatever they are called in English that prepare you to famous network related certificates if you are rich enough. Why I mention them in that order? Because if you have no official Computer Science/computer Engineering degree they would serve you the best in proving you have skills in your 1st job. If you are on poor side or have a lot of time after classes and want to prepare yourself for internship and then a proper job - you can build fully software simulation of networks using Qemu and OS images of your choice - get any network devices you can put your hands on for cheap and use them to build networks connecting each others with end points made out of old thinkpads or Raspberry Pi computers etc. - read a truck full of books on networking, tutorials u can find online, network devices manuals you can find online - IPv4, routing and vlans and firewalls are more or less main area you would want to focus at this point, if you live in country when IPv6 is used learn it as well - have some knowledge about most common attacks and dangers Then try getging internship related to networking and then a proper employment. Even if that 1st job kinda suck after few months you would have some experience to prove you have at least basic skills in the field. At this point you may try convince your employer (or your next empoyer) to send you to course ending with certification.

Unironically Arch is a better learning platform if it weren't for systemd abstracting everything away too. In any case, it really depends on what you want to learn. You can learn anything on any distro, the only difference it'll make is in how easy it makes it for you to see what's going on under the hood and change it up. For this, Slackware is pretty stellar, as all the distro consists of is a set of relatively small and readable bash scripts, and largely unmodified software. But again, you won't learn anything by just installing and using it, unless you dig deeper by yourself.

>>42189 First problem is that these 3.0 drives are formatted as Exfat out of the box so to benefit with 3.0 speeds (that rely on the partition format). To get universal bootability you will require to use FAT and even windows OS so you can defragment the image files (linux implementation isn't as great). FAT file system can only support files <4GB although you could still compress or split the image files. You can probably still make a bootable Exfat however you may get booting issues. https://www.easy2boot.com/ is recommended if you want an easy way to boot any distro or even non-linux OSes over faulty or normal BIOS/EFI. I've encountered laptops that had officially bugged BIOS and won't boot any bootable USB but e2b was an exception.

Does my chipset just not know how to deal with this much memory? I'm using a 1st-gen Ryzen processor, 5200 I believe, but I can check. Hitomi · 2021-03-19 18:33
>>43411 After a little more testing, I narrowed it down to a single RAM stick that is broken. Weird, since I got memtest to verify both at the same time twice. I guess there was some kind of defect with the chip that meant it broke after just a few dozen reads/writes? It could also be some kind of ESD but I think that's unlikely considering that the stick worked at least once, and I discharged my hand by touching the PSU before touching the component. In any case, I will just send back the stick and claim it was DOA.

>>40136 Using the free partition wizard windows application is it possible to clone an sd that would have hidden unix partitions on it? I never use linux. I recently gave up on making a pi work as a 'non-android pda' and the pocketgo seemed 'okay for books and retro gaming as it has a text reading ability it seems (it's in the mail)' but no links to download it's firmware work so far. I have tried three, mega's is dead, google drive has a download limit blocking me and a third option keeps taking five hours but the download locks up if I keep 'retrying' when it fails, as that is too long apparently with the modern Internet to wait. Ergo sometimes it ends up saying '13 days' and such. it won't work. I think the pw program might work to install it but not clone it once it gets here, so I don't like the idea of even using a device that relies on a very breakable sd without backups basically. Archive.org had no links I could find and there were nor torrents either for pocketgo's cfw 1.3etc firmware. I even tried google's other links for older than 1.3.3 and they had the limit on as well. I loaded up tor to see if it's my area but I guess not, someone must just be downloading it too often, or 'viewing it'. Of which is silly. Just viewing it to see how big it is could be triggering the download limit. Google is so bad, but anyway, my only link is https://rs97.bitgala.xyz/Miyoo%20Devices/Pocketgo%20cfw/Pocketgo_CFW_v1.3.3_04_19_20.img.7z but it keeps failing to download and I've tried for about 5 hours. My question thus is CAN I use that pw wizard to clone all four, if I recall it was four, unix partitions of the pocketgo? I just want a portable non-android computer that can play games and read text files and after having far too much pain over raspberry pi I alternated to this sort of thing and were on a budget.

As you can see on the bottom part* It has made its way into my "added" certificate servers and you cannot add a custom CA with a Server:* wildcard by allowing an exception. You might as well check your browser certificates. On chrome, it was distrusted. I believe pale moon might have been compromised by either the packer (chaotic AUR, arch AUR) or some clever web/local malware that I had stumbled upon which infected my browser profile at some point. Although Pale moon explicitly distrusts the certificate as seen on the first row, it's still a mystery as to how an exception was added into without my knowledge.

>>45580 Points: >light on system resources (My dwm build uses 0.1% cpu, and 0.1% memory) >utilizes space on your screen more efficiently >nice to be able to use the keyboard for mostly everything (especially on laptops) >extreme customization, can setup tailored exactly for your workflow >multiple workspaces/tags to easily have multiple "virtual desktops" and move stuff between them (DE's have this, but WM's implement it better imo) >does require a bit more setup, and a bit of time to learn and understand, but in the long run can save you lots of time and make you more productive and comfortable >can be duplicated in seconds to another machine >security, depending on your wm and setup of it. >Efficiency Once you get it setup how you like it, it's nice rarely needing to use the mouse. I feel so uncomfortable and inefficient using DE's now. It does take a little time to learn, and configure, but once you have it setup for you, it's worth it in the long run.. You have multiple work-spaces, you can keep them all dedicated to nothing and move stuff at your will, or you can dedicate them to certain types of programs. Like workspace 6 for videos, workspace 1 for web browser, 2 for music and audio control, 3 for chat stuff like XMPP and IRC, etc. It also is heavily keyboard focused (although some wm's offer lots of mouse functionality, it's generally keyboard focused. This is great on laptops, although still amazing on desktops too. This allows you to keep your hands on the keyboard, quickly do tasks, switch stuff, etc. Instead of constantly going back and forth between a mouse. On Thinkpads, this is only increased because there are occasions where programs do need the mouse, but with the Trackpoint you can still keep your hands on the keyboard. >Replication It's extremely easy to copy your entire config to another machine, you basically install the program on machine two, and then copy your .configs over and you have your WM replicated on the second machine essentially. >Lightweight In comparison to the large marjority of DE's, WMs are generally EXTREMELY lightweight, use significantly less resources, and can be more secure due to less code. If you go the dwm route, it comes bare minimum, you apply some patches then you have only what you need, no extra stuff. >Security Depending on your setup, and what WM you use, this can vary. But using DWM for example, because DWM works on a DWM comes with no features, then you apply the patches manually (which is easier than most people make it out to be), you ONLY have features you need in it. No extra features, or junk, and small code-base. >My WM Suggestions For beginners, I'd suggest bspwm. The config syntax is easier than i3, the config can be done in like less than 50 lines, and it separates key-binds to a separate program (sxhkd) which is nicer than having it all in one config like i3 imo.. When you get more comfortable if you want to switch/"upgrade" I'd suggest dwm personally. Also remember you can always have it setup so you can swap between the WM and DE if you need too, or want to while working on configuring your WM slowly or something breaks you have a fallback that isn't the TTY. Personally I don't even have a DE installed anymore, just the WM. It's very /comfy/ indeed. https://github.com/baskerville/bspwm https://dwm.suckless.org/

>>45589 Openbsd's openntpd took a drastic turn and instead now verifies the current time with google's up-to-date certs, through cloudflare and quad9 dns which in itself may be considered overkill for security since outdated system may cause it to trigger and use bad certificate and cause your system to get pwned through some kind of dns-related attack https:// www.zdnet.com/article/isc-urges-updates-of-dns-servers-to-wipe-out-new-bind-vulnerabilities/ although at the sacrifice of your privacy by using said companies as "default" it used to be that you just run a single command and your time gets updated, now it needs to use dns, check a trustable website which spits out the current time, set your time from that reference and after all that work then finally check the ntp servers.

why do people tout KDE as the most customizable DE if i still have to edit 15 different svg files, and even then it doesn't make the changes i made as if i never touched the files in the first place? seriously all i fuarrrking want to do is change the colour of the taskbar that is genuinely all i want to do but i cant i have opened every fuarrrking SVG in the theme im using, hue shifted ALL of them, saved them, switched to another theme and back, rebooted, everything BUT ITS STILL fuarrrkING WHITE

A really strange message appeared in a conversation with my mom on Signal. While it says it was sent from her, she wasn't on her phone and got a notification about it, as did I. It's about something with a cabin. I'll try to translate the incoherent mess "in yes I am so much to learn about the most used that that a cabin trip and I". Our conversations are always in Norwegian, which makes this so much weirder. There's a bunch of random characters in there so it must be a glitch of some sort. But was it sent from her phone? A server problem?
Sabo Engle · 2021-05-08 23:46
This isn't worthy of its own thread, but just so you know Djvu is god's format. PDFs can store arbitrary executables and compromise your system, not to mention they have much worse compression for scanned documents. The advantage of PDFs is in embedded fonts which save space for non-scanned documents, but Djvu even in these cases is able to produce a reasonable sized file at high resolution.

>>45781 >Do you have any suggestions for CLI tools on cleaning PDFs? I saw one that was particularly popular on github the other day called peepdf, but I don't plan on using this personally. My plan is just to convert random PDFs to Djvu and then transfer via USB to my air-gapped machine for reading.

>>45772 Server problems are common, I've had conversations sent to the different people in some popular message service though everyone knew about the glitch. All I can think of with that is its either some kind of speech to text or maybe the phone was compromised. Could just be another case of "leaving your phone in your pocket with screen turned on" which happened with me before although it was a lot more incoherent like random letters numbers and symbols (since I use hacker's keyboard).

>>45690 Maybe learn2SVG moar (which I plan on doing) or it's likely that you're editing the wrong file. Don't use the editor that they provide, it is like kicking dead whales down the beach. I remember kde keeps copies of window themes, color schemes, and aurorae themes somewhere in /home/.. and editing those sometimes do nothing since it would still read the files inside /usr/share/plasma/desktoptheme/.. Even if you did manage to duplicate and edit that duplicate, you'd still have to edit the metadata so there's no Name collisions. I only use the default breeze theme so the taskbar colors follow my window color schemes. Also, don't forget svg/svgz can be opened as a text file.

I'm so frustrated. Ever since I uninstalled flash like an idiot only about half of swf files work on all my browsers. I really like 4chan.org/f and now not only do only half of them give me a black/white screen (audio works), but there's like a 30 second wait per swf file whereas it used to be instant. Please help.

Posting here since the browser thread had reached the limit. >>45374 >install chromium >see >>40802 >"privacy" The only ones you deal with privacy is companies that want your data and most of the time these companies run these browsers or have some form of agreement with another. >connect to a VPN. In theory this is correct but in practice your browser actually now store your previous IP/country/location/timezone into the browser itself (on mozilla you can see it on about:config) which websites have special API to get the previous data. Lets say you used a VPN now but way before that you have used your own IP which would mean your browser has your last real IP/country/location/timezone to share which exactly defeats the purpose of your VPN. This is why you could see posts online claiming they had used VPN but then some modern website still knows their real location (most commonly through location services and other API soykaf they do to defeat VPN). You have to give up privacy for security unless you're smart enough to just firewall and do IP whitelisting on all of your connections and program applications.

My win10 laptop has been saying its OS version is EndOfService and needs to install a new one, but I can't find any information anywhere if this is like a total reinstall of the system where I need to backup my files and make sure I dont get locked out of my currently logged in accounts and all that, or if it'll leave all that alone and just touch the system, not anything else.
