ITT we discuss the I2P anonymity network
What is I2P?
I2P is an anonymity network (Like tor) but with the difference that it is in-proxy (you cannot go to the clearnet using I2P). It allows users to host and visit websites (or any kind of service) anonymously.
Differences with Tor?
>Supports TCP and UDP (Tor only supports TCP)
>In-proxy only, you cannot exit the I2P network, meaning that traffic is always end-to-end encrypted.
>Peer-To-Peer, you connect to other I2P users rather than Tor relays.
>Distributed.
>You can use I2P for torrenting.
>So small it hasn't got censored (yet...)
>Basically every peer contributes to other peer's traffic
How to install?
There are 2 implementations of I2P:
Java I2P (First picture) and i2pd (Second picture). First is written in java (who would have said it?) and i2pd is written in C++.
Java I2P is a bit more user friendly since you can configure it via a web interface, i2pd is more for advanced users since it has only config files.

Here's a paper about I2P

Bump, attaching a comparative study of tor and i2p

Is Java I2P embeddable? Is it like Freenet where each peer provides some shared storage or more like Tor where it just relays traffic?
Nemissa · 2020-11-10 15:23
bump because i2p is relevant to rooskey wired

>Is Java I2P embeddable?
dunno
>Is it like Freenet where each peer provides some shared storage or more like Tor where it just relays traffic?
I2P does not have that feature (You can have interactive content in i2p because they're actual http servers rather than .html files that make a freesite). so it's more like Tor in that sense, Nevertheless if you want anonymous file sharing over I2P, just create a torrent.

There's a lot of russians in I2P for some reason. but >>35508 has a bit of demographics in I2P

>Is Java I2P embeddable?
afaik no, but the c++ implementation is available as a library (libi2pd), if that's what you're looking for
>Is it like Freenet where each peer provides some shared storage or more like Tor where it just relays traffic?
it's designed to anonymize traffic (in a different way than tor). but people also run tahoe-lafs nodes over it, so that gives you that anonymous distributed storage.

i2p had a huge spike in popularity in russia around 2010, but that has died down by now
