Nameing Projects

Allegedly one of the two hardest problems in computer science.
How do you folks go about naming the programs you write? Do you have a particular process, or do decent names just come to you intuitively?

If i don't know i'll just take a latin name of an animal or plant.

I use obscure occult words like some chuuni kid.

i'm bad at this too. i usually start with the name for the thing it does, or the main technology it works with, and then make increasingly abstract conceptual leaps to related words until i hit one that both sounds good and isn't taken already.

I name them after amazing, exceptional people's handles that used to be in communities I used to belong to as an homage

I name them after cute little girls. Preferably blondes.
Demeere · 2020-10-24 17:57
I name them to reflect their function, if its a game i chose a catchy name that reflects the theme.
Names are hard to come up with, but i find most projects have soykaf names that arent even memorable.

Have the logo after an animal, gem or historical figure. Then name is after yourself or just an acronym, like GNU (GNU Not Unix) or just something stupid. Look at Java, Python and ruby

can you give an example? I just thought it would be random white girls name
Random · 2020-10-24 18:53
I name them based on what they are and what they do. Anything else (like how they do it, what they use and stuff) should be documented somewhere else, preferably in a README.
Here are some examples on how I name things:
>web browser
web-browser
>image viewers, parsers, editors
img-view, png-parse, jfif-ed...
>sandbox
sandbox
>a firewall script
firewall
It's all very simple. If i need to rename something, I try not to strive away from the simple name I'd give it; for example if I were to rename 'sandbox', I would name it 'sandboxer' or something like that.
Also, if you need some help with naming, here are some ideas:
Abbreviations which tell you nothing until you look them up - gimp, mpd
Abbreviations which tell you exactly what something does - youtube-dl, mkdir
Seemingly unrelated names - firefox, >>34956
Simple explanation of what something does - echo, proxychains

Sorry for mixing abbreviations and acronyms :>

Careful not to name it something copyrighted (I.E youtube-dl). make sure to name it something like ydl or just DL. And make sure not to put copyright examples of how it does something if you know it's gonna be a gray line.

I will use puns or play on words sometimes
Sometimes I use a movie reference
I'm considering using a D&D theme for my next series of names
like spellbooks instead of libs, wands instead of plugins, etc
I still try to make it make sense once you get the idea though
I stay away from "enterprise" naming like
>SimpleBeanFactoryAwareAspectInstanceFactory
I'd name a BeanFactory a PeaShooter or something
So this class would be the PeaSniperTrainingCamp probably
It produces PeaSnipers, who are aware of PeaShooters, and knows how to use them

Hey, I do that too!
