inferno os/plan 9

Have you ever worked with inferno OS? Inferno OS is a light weight OS that can run on just about anything, even on 1mb of ram. You can run it as an application ontop of an OS or as a regular OS (although I have not tried this) links: - http://www.vitanuova.com/inferno/ - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inferno_(operating_system) Ever worked with it or do you/have you used it for anything? As for me I only use it for hosting a gateway for configuring some very old devices (a router) but I'd love to convert more local services to it, and plan 9 in general. Here is a picture of me running it on a tablet ... also, plan 9 thread I guess?

Its various programs are pretty useful if you're running 9front, the web browser Charon for example supports ecmascript (a javascript standard) and it also has an excellent acme variant which I prefer over stock acme (called acme-sac i think) I'd like to try and see about porting over their file manager too but I have not really had the time.

from a UI/UX perspective it's certainly ugly
John Rain · 2020-10-19 21:24
>>34606 sure but that stuff doesn't matter
John Doe · 2020-10-19 21:31
>>34611 How many people on here genuinely believe this?
Cypher · 2020-10-19 22:17
>>34612 And I haven't tried this OS, but it does pull off "so ugly it's charming" retro look. But to use a housing analogy, I would compare such a UI to living in a near-empty monk cell with a leaky roof and a door that falls of its' hinges once every few days. Can you live and work in it? Yes, but that's not the point. Could you fix the roof and the door? If you have the means, then of course. But at that point why not make the extra effort to thoughtfully choose more furniture, especially if you're trying to organize any complicated work? And maybe make the extra effort to make the place look nice, so you're not staring at a bare concrete wall and floor every time you're home.

>>34612 How something looks doesn't matter unless the look starts to effect usability. Font doesn't matter unless it makes it more difficult to read. Colour doesn't matter unless it makes it difficult to look at. UI elements don't matter unless they make it inefficient to use.

henlo plan9 best os .

Inferno and plan 9 are just cat-v memes I've never tried plan 9 for more than 9 minutes because can't be bothered with learning a new OS, again

>>34614 The bar for each of those seems to vary quite a bit for each person. I think most STEM people really aren't visually inclined - if something looks 'bad' it doesn't bother them, but this has the drawback of being unable to make something look or feel 'good' to use, even if they try. I also assume human usability would be a much more nebulous concept compared to the logic of math and computers. But that's why we have different specializations disciplines for everything.

Motherfucker, the browser ate my post deletion password. Reply >>34620 meant for >>34615

>>34620 And i don't think ignoring how good design can be is beneficial, it just leaves you stunted. Like the inability to distinguish a masterpiece painting or musical piece from a mediocre one, it denies you a whole realm of experience.
fsociety · 2020-10-20 00:04
>>34622 If you compare a painting to software, you shouldn't compare how the software looks to how the painting looks. That doesn't make sense.
Demeere · 2020-10-20 07:54
>>34632 Even though appearance/usability isn't the main point of software, I think my point is that when saying there's no point refining it past the absolute bare minimum (>>34615), and this bare minimum varies per person and context anyway, the software is probably going to suffer for it. And that such a mindset - that any refinement past the bare minimum (which again, varies per person and context) is pointless, would imply that the whole realm beyond that minimum might not really exist, and is just some leisurely playground for shapes and colors.

>>34612 why would the ui being ugly on something being used as a server or some other embedded application matter..? >>34621 >>34615 i can see this was the wrong place to post this, never for a second did i think of inferno as a desktop os, why does everyone assume this? are you children?
Eldon Tyrell · 2020-10-20 09:03
do you people also complain when you debian server's console is ugly? the point of the thread flew right over everyone's heads, i guess this is what happens when 4chan users infect your site no longer monitoring this thread OP out
Bobby Newmark · 2020-10-20 09:09
>>34657 >>34658 I don't know why I'm proselytizing about design on a technology imageboard/thread, I guess other websites suck and I mostly just use lainchan. And I wanted to reply to >>34611, you can still talk about the thing. It's a slow website and even if you think the thread is "derailed", it can still go on and resume topic after a very long time.
Chani · 2020-10-20 09:12
>>34657 >>34658 lol, always love the instant backdown after getting called out as an idiot. But yes, obviously Inferno will be discussed as a desktop OS unless you specifically state otherwise.
Demeere · 2020-10-20 09:18
>>34660 I didn't back down on my opinion and it's not idiotic, I just admitted my design tangent doesn't strictly relate to the topic and that OP shouldn't think his thread is doomed after it.
Mentat · 2020-10-21 02:27
>>34658 >do you people also complain when you debian server's console is ugly? plan9 and inferno are hobbyist operating systems at this point it wouldn't hurt if someone gave them a personality
