Hello dear Lainons! Do you have a netbook? What do you use this old, portable device for?
The one that i have is the only portable x86 pc that i habe at the moment, due to a lack of money, i use it for coding in java :)
Have a nice day

Well, if it counts, I have a thinkpad x60. I don't use it because I have no way of give it electric power. But I would probably use it as backup computer. I have a T60 but I use it as server. I though love that x60

I use my Acer chromebook which I got for free from friend.
It is the socalled modern netbook, so I am posting the pic of my chromebook. I managed to remove Intel ME from it and ported coreboot on. As fast as my T450s in the background, so far I am in love with it. The battery lasts for almost two days browsing and listening to musics.

I have my old Acer C738T from high school a couple years ago, but I haven't found much to do with it,considering I have a better laptop for that size (dell XPS 13). May just turn it into a server.

Great idea to use them as a server. Usually modern chromebooks provide more than 2 USB 3.0 ports, so can turn them into NAS as well. The point here is that they use passive cooling and it will be absolutely nice to put under your bed.

I don't care if you care other lainons or not. Did I ask you to tell me whether you care or not?
Splicer · 2020-10-17 07:49
I have a HP Stream if it does count as a notebook since its like 4GB ram and has a celeron. I haven't used it in many months now since it fuarrrking is like kicking dead whales down the beach for desktop usage. I'm not sure what to do with it especially when I have a RPI4 lying around anyways.
Cypher · 2020-10-17 11:16
i've got the latest debian stable on my 12 year old dell mini 9. basically the thinkpad of netbooks, it just refuses to die. still, it's only my backup machine.
Erik Johansson · 2020-10-17 17:11
i have an acer eee pc 701 4g. slow as hell with xorg running, so i use it only in tty with void linux installed. use it as an mpd server for playing music. pretty useful use case for it i reckon

do you keep the battery in?
does the chargers transformer get very hot?
ever had any fire issues?
Neo · 2020-10-17 17:53
>>34445
I cannot answer those questions because I don't have a charger for the X60. I use the x60 charger to my T60, which is a server

oh, i'm an idiot lol
nah, i don't have any of those issues in my t60

I've been considering getting a cheap used netbook. Seems like the perfect thing to have on my bedside table and use as a dream diary, as well as a place to dump all the thoughts that go through my brain while I'm trying to sleep. I imagine all it would need is just Emacs for org-mode, the Nextcloud client to sync with the rest of my org notes, and wpa_supplicant for wifi. Maybe Xorg and a window manager, if Nextcloud's command-line client doesn't work out for me.
The only challenge is getting one that suits me. My only real preference (aside from "you can easily put a decent distro on it") is that it be powered through USB, so I can hook it up to the adapter in the only outlet near the table, behind my bed. That essentially narrows it down to chromebooks. We have a few of those in the repair shop I work at, but I think they're all broken so I'd have to fix one first.

Been using FreeBSD on my EEEPC 1000HA.

we had these at my school, they run like soykaf on chromeOS but would fly if you set them up with a good light linux installation.
It was a shame we only got to play around with the broken ones, their speeds were impressively annoying when we'd have to set up 250+ for students to use, just loading the login screen took ~15 seconds at initial boot.

When I was younger I always wanted a netbook, since this UMPC idea is very appealing to me (also cute), but never ended up getting one. About half a year ago I reminded myself of that and got an eeepc 900hd.
On one hand it terribly slow, 900mhz celeron does it's best, but yeah. Also the -hd suffix means that you'll have a jolly time finding a battery for this thing.
On the other hand, the -hd suffix means that I can stick a 2 TB drive there for funsies. And yeah, since I live mostly in the terminal it's a nice little machine for some coding/mail/music, with mpv+youtube-dl it can even play 480p YT, which actually doesn't look that bad on a 1024x600 screen.
**Also no rice yet, so far it has been my OpenBSD dev mosh box**

Nice, also very good friend you have :o
my battery lasts 20 minutes only using ssh :(
>>34404
yes, turning it into a server is a very good idea, go for it!
another one would be torrent seeder, wich is allways nice, low power machines are great for this kind of stuff
>>34423
mine is 10 years old and most wear is because i buyed it from a guy in 2016, but also refuses to die, and is my only backup machine
>>34501
love the colors, also, that machine is a classic one! :D
>>34584
the machine looks nice, and for using terminal is great for sure!
how much did it cost you? if you payed for it, i would have gone for an atom n450/550
Elliot Alderson · 2020-10-21 01:50
I need to fix mine.
It stopped turning on, but still charges and sometimes turns on until it couldn't even charge anymore.
I'm thinking of looking for a short, or jumping the MOSFET. Any suggestion? I also don't know how to use my multimeter. Any good ebooks?

Does a Librebooted X200 count? I mean, its small enough

Nice theme. How's FreeBSD compared to other linux based OS?
Lunch · 2020-10-29 10:26
>How's FreeBSD compared to other linux based OS?
you made it sound like you think FreeBSD is "Linux based"

Can't afford a real computer, so this is all I've ever had.
It hasn't failed me, and I find it really comfy, I like to think of it as my little hacking box.
Since it is a comouter and therefore should do all I could expect of it, for me it's sufficient. In practice I don't do much. Barely anything at all, really. I've always wanted to do something like LFS but it takes decades to compile something as gargantuan as gcc (linux kernel takes considerably short time at that), not to mention binutils and all that....

Netbooks are under 9 inches an were not supposed to run anything heavier than a web browser, that Lenovo's got pretty decent CPU for it's time, could run light CAD applications.
The Plague · 2020-10-31 06:17
my home network's dns server is an eeepc. it filters hosts that i don't like. it runs debian and i only log in to it every so often to check logs out of curiosity.
