Debloat Ubuntu into a Debian installation
fsociety · 2020-09-27 19:49
How do you transform Ubuntu into Debian and remove its overhead?
How to make it lightweight?
Donna Hawthorne · 2020-09-27 20:13
You use it to make a Debian install disk, boot into the install disk, and overwrite the Ubuntu installation

NOOOO
But replace Ubuntu repositories with Debian and it should work fine right
And /etc/os-release to Debian instead of Ubuntu so neofetch shows the right distro
Running just i3 alone using 300mb ram, how to debloatify

To lower ram usage make it more lightweight
How to debloat and reduce ram usage on startup

Stop being retarded.
Install slitaz, it's 50mb for the entire distro, and yes it's graphical

Literally Kalyx

Your question is indeed retarded, but you are touching an interesting topic that we can instead talk about:
How do you make your distro more lightweight?
I generally just inspect the processes and replace/remove the soykaft.
This process imply replace wm with evilwm.
Which other soykaft you avoid-install lainonz?

The most serious [and also general/cross-distro] answer to this is, get the "server", "everything", or "netinstall" installer CD, and then only install the packages you want
if you want more control than that, you're pretty much SOL unless you want to either Install Gentoo or contract out some company to make a very fragile version of whatever it is you're envisioning

Never forget that there are so many normal users infesting halfchan that it isn't worth it to post or even look there again.
Please do not force me to look at the catalogs again.

Yep. The easiest way to install a very minimal system I've found is to boot the Debian netinstall cd, deselect *everything* on the tasksel page, and install that. Then boot into your nice little working console system and add whatever you like by hand. Imo, beats compiling everything in Gentoo.

Best thing we can do is not to care about that godforsaken imageboard.
John Titor · 2020-10-12 20:25
While I do appreciate the discussion, make sure not to break rule 6. If you guys want to talk about it, make a /q/ thread. But the best way is to just report it and move on, and try to keep the quality discussions we are acclimated to.

Where do i report posts? there's no button for it, i also read the faq

I personally would like a debian distro with ubuntu repos and gui and no systemd.
I avoid such things because I'm afraid that it's going to become a pain in the ass one day.

Can't you just get debian and add ubuntu repos to your repo list?

Not sure what is exactly your issue, but you can report posts by clicking the checkbox next to the post, then this will come up under the post
Password:
Reason:
Put in a reason for reporting the post then click the report button. If this does not appear, look at the bottom left of the page and you'll find the same prompts I mentioned in this post.

Devuan is pretty much just Debian without systemd, plain and simple. It works amazingly well. Adding Ubuntu (or any other) repos to Debian or Devuan is asking for problems, and you won't get support for the problems.
>I avoid such things because I'm afraid that it's going to become a pain in the ass one day.
Good insight.

Nah dwm isn't Gentoo. But it may be Gentoo.
Debbie Charteris · 2020-10-17 17:31
sounds like a good way to break your system
just install fuarrrkin debian,

by crossposting on /lit/ and /a/, and seeing people mention it on those boards. I kept seeing references to it on those boards and 8/cyber/, and eventually decided to check it out after watching Lain. It's comfy here.

This, but with Devuan

You want i3 and keep Ubuntu the most lightweight possible?
Well, I use Ubuntu with i3, I'm talking from my own experience.
This is my advice:
Ironically, practice first with the Debian Netinstall in a Virtual Machine or something, don't install any graphical environment and start directly from the command line.
>learn the basic commands to work in a computer without a graphical environment.
>learn what you can uninstall and what not, Linux needs a minimal set of packages in order to work.
>look htop, see what programs are running and then compare them with an Ubuntu installation, learn what things you don't need.
>if you detect drivers or firmware problems from there, learn how to solve it.
Now in Ubuntu
>go to Synaptic and make a list of all the packages that you want.
>keep another device near you to search help and solve your problems (if you cant, keep at least another USB with a live install to fallback, don't risk to turn your computer into a paperweight)
>uninstall everything that you don't need
>delete those hidden folders in the home directory too, it will reset a lot of configurations to the default.
>reboot, and do what you learned from the Debian Netinstall
And if you really want to keep it lightweight, avoid programs from graphical enviroments like gnome and kde, they have tons of dependencies. Xfce and Lxde usually are more modular.
Yes, Debian is the best way to go, less work, faster and easier, but I understand if you need the Ubuntu Repos, it happens.
Good luck anon.

when did we become/r/techsupport
sage · 2020-10-29 08:59
this is what i was really interested in when i was brand new to linux. but it doesn't really matter.
just install a ultra lightweight window manager like dwm and call it a day.
dwm is conveniently enough being demo'd in this video

I swear to All*h, Windows 7 was faster with Aero and transparencies on than modern L*nux with all meme text applications installed instead of proper GUI. Did we fuarrrking regress into 1970s?
