What are you using your computers for? We have all these cool riced-out desktops with potential for maximum productivity and the world of the internet at our fingertips. But what does Lain actually do? I: >program games or game tech in my free time, currently writing a software renderer for 3D stuff to understand how it works >program utilities for myself, last thing was a notekeeping system, because I read a soykafton of stuff and never can remember everything >le epic gaming sometimes >watch youtube (less, thanks to a browser plugin that disables recommended videos and stuff like that) >browse facebug (bad habit, want to tone it down) >browse the interwebz About the last thing: What are some really good websites? You find the stuff you want with search engines, but you don't stumble across the stuff you never know you needed there. Places where you really can learn or that are otherwise useful? Or just cool? >http://textfiles.com/ A ton of text files about everything, many things are outdated >https://github.com/danistefanovic/build-your-own-x/ Cool to get an overview over various stuff >http://reference.sketchdaily.net/en if you want to practice figure drawing this is really cool >http://www.doshaven.eu/ New DOS homebrew software >https://github.com/rby90/project-based-tutorials-in-c a ton of C tutorials, probably also cool if you program in other languages

I just use it like a normal computer. School, casual browsing, etc. Sometimes (not often) I lurk in Linux chatrooms and find ideas for things there. As for search engines, I have a instance of searx setup on my server *psssssssst* https://unixfandom.com/guides/searx-install.php

Programming, Browser imageboards like this, talking to frens over XMPP, writing stuff for my blog/wiki. >What are some really good websites? Which kind of websites do you want?
Pris · 2020-09-22 07:57
>>32947 Websites you would generally recommend for some reason. Stuff you personally find interesting and that is not Google frontpage/reddit/stackoverflow/... stuff. Programming, art, whatever floats your boat.

>>32941 >cool riced-out desktops with potential for maximum productivity With total respect, judging from neofetch threads, most lainons have (riced out) slushboxes with 7 year old CPUs and like 8GB of RAM.

>>32979 >7 year old CPUs haha, i use a 12 year old CPU Present Day, Present Time! AHAHAHAHAHA!

>>32979 OP here, sitting with a laptop with n i3-2xxx with 2,2 GHz max and 6GB Ram. Most of the work I do runs on a server anyway, why shouldn't you be able to be productive with older hardware? Works perfectly fine

I was thinking yesterday that the only digital things of importance that I work with are internet shopping for things I can't buy at the supermarket, my calendar and my journal. And I could do the last one on paper. I do nothing else. I don't listen to music, I don't watch anything, I don't play videogames. I've dropped out of every public site including imageboards, except for this kind of post once a week just to prove that I still exist. All that keeps me hanging from this thread is just habit. I have tried being fascinated with the hipster sides of tech like gopher and all sorts of counter-culture projects but I didn't care for any of those either. I hate programming and everything programming related. I hate most people I talk to online. I hate the communities. I hate the way people interact with each other. I hate hyperlinked meme culture. I've been working on all this secprivacy soykaf to keep myself busy but I have so little data that is so uninteresting that it would make no different at all if I used Google Calendar and other botnet soykaf. I feel like a guy who built a nuke proof safe to store a 5$ teddy bear. I secretly wish something critical happened to my devices like an electrical fire that took my backups as well so I would have the excuse to cut ties with it all. I could cancel my home internet plan and just use the phone when I need to buy something. I have already done this kind of thing before several times in spite of sunken costs and I always benefited from it. I want an excuse to break free, so badly. >>32979 There's virtually no difference between posting neofetch screencaps on lainchan and duckface selfies on instagram.

>Study >Find ideas for new things I could try >Watch videos >Browse Lainchan and find new websites I used to use it for PC gaming but modern gaming hasn't really gotten that much better (gameplay wise) since the last gen of gaming and I have an entire collection of consoles and games from past generations I could play. >Interesting websites http://www.altexxanet.org/ https://www.dialupsound.com/ https://archiveos.org/ https://pi-hole.net/ https://www.my90stv.com/#ri2lVA1k5-Q https://www.treesnetwork.com/

>>32941 >What are you using your computers for? >But what does Lain actually do? Similar to other users, I feel like I have been abusing technology. My primary goal is to develop a usable skill-set that will benefit me professionally, and in accomplishing tangential goals. I mostly: > Read RSS Feeds > Read Niche Cyberpunk/cipherpunk web sites > Writing Journals (via jrnl + vim ) > Flash Cards (via Anki) > Financees (via Gnucash) In the past few monthes, I have had a kind of 'revolution' in how toxic abusing the internet has actually been for me and my goals, and I have begun an attempt at recovery. I was inspired by N-O-D-E to try to make something. Since then, I have : > Created self hosted website (Sysadmin is a core competency for me) > Begun Operating Tor Node (For admin experience /community) > Writing Journals (via jrnl + vim) > Time Tracking > Programming Python (Pragmatically, I have learned tons of algs/structures in college, but never learned to use common APIs or engineer larger projects to get soykaf done). > Reading Code I have noticed that actually producing content and undertaking projects feels objectively better than a day of reading internet news. Orders of magnitude better. I encourage you all to put up a few dollars to rent a VPS, operate a Tor Node, Self Host a website, or otherwise get involved in actual projects that require activity outside reading. Check out N-O-D-E to see some of this spirit in action.

>>32941 I use my work laptops from home to earn money. As for my Desktop it's used for communicating with my friends, playing games, watching films/tv and learning more about computers. I also like looking at the planes in the sky, on globe.adsbexchange.com, that can be pretty fun. Also if you're bored, why not try eBay for some cheap vintage electronics, or virtualization for an obscure OS
Jean Dupont · 2020-10-01 16:11
I play a handful of mostly older games, watch anime and listen to music. Also the subreddit of whatever I'm into at the moment, or online stores that are cancer to use on a phone. And of course lain chan.
