Hi Lain, I would like help from some users on this subject, as I live in a third world country, games are very expensive here, and my computer does not have such a good capacity to run many games, so I have to resort to piracy.
does any lainon have a website recommendation to download pirated games?, most of which I download come with malware, viruses and etc ... (i use utorrents sites, pirate bay is what I use the most), would have any tips or any program that could identify any viruses within these files?, or a more reliable website?, thank you for your attention!
The Phantom Phreak · 2020-09-15 03:06
Install gnu/linux and only play libre and open source video games.
藤原純一 · 2020-09-15 03:16
It's very rare for there to actually be viruses if you just use typical things like the pirate bay, 1337x.to, etc. Just pick things with trusted uploaders like the skulls on the pirate bay, and lots of seeds.
99% of the time antivirus is wrong when it says something you torrented is a virus
i also suggest to linux for everything except for games. Dual boot. Then it doesnt even matter if you get a virus on your windows drive

Can't the virus just modify files on your linux partition
Drano · 2020-09-15 03:53

why would it when almost all targets use Windows and ext4 isn't supported by Windows anyway...

There's also a whole world of proprietary games that are accessible via free emulators. Some people think this is against the spirit of libre software but there's no conceivable harm in playing City Connection on MAME.

Seconding this.
There's so many awesome retro games you can safely get. Emulated or libre games are myriad.
SHODAN · 2020-09-15 04:24

There is a collection of free older games on https://archive.org that you can play right from your browser. That's not even piracy. You can play classics.

>Can't the virus just modify files on your linux partition
But yes it could. Theoretically, that is. Why wouldn't you be more concerned about your boot record and firmware?
You would need to live within your means, security-wise. Group your attackers based on what would they be willing to do to get what from you. Some attacks you will be able to evade, others you wouldn't. Once the groups are set, you should be able to decide on what risk level of risk certain games are worth to you.
I would recommend installing games on a different device, one without internet. (If you start your malware on a device, it gets normal access. However, if you never start your malware on a device, its only dim chance is to exploit the program that downloads it, which is magnitudes smaller, so it's safer.) You would only move the files over to the non-internet device. (You may be able to get another device real cheap.) Second best would be a different drive, with your main one disconnected at game time.
If you have shiny, expensive hardware you spent your entire budget on, alternatively you could mess around with virtual machines with hardware virtualization and GPU pass-through. (I think the project another lain was recommending was called looking glass?) YMMV. That should take care of the weaker malware just as well.

Blozzboygames.net, most are in Spanish but I guess that's better than nothing, the best way to go about this is open source or steam, it has a bunch of free games and occasional good discounts

rutracker.org pretty good, well curated and they have policy of displaying original names. Only downside is soykafty search for not registered users.

Lolno, that hasn't been trustworthy for a long time.
OP, Rutracker is your answer >>33087, along with http://fitgirl-repacks.site/
You can also use Sandboxie wherever possible.
Frank Garza · 2020-09-26 03:47
torrminatorr.com is a pretty good forum. Has links to downloads (not torrent files) so sometimes slower than torrenting, sometimes faster.
Has Linux and GOG games, which I can attest to not appearering to be modified compared to the GOG games I own (same file size, etc).
You need to register with an email, but I just used one of those temp ones.
To download efficiently at all they suggest you use Jdownloader.

I second fitgirl. That site is legit, I've downloaded so many games out of there, and never had any issues.
William Holtzer · 2020-09-27 19:27
most of which I download come with malware, viruses and etc ...
in my experience of 20 years of pirating i have never seen evidence that a program or game i downloaded contained malware (nothing ever stolen, no adware or soykaf bundled). it sounds like you have an antivirus further bringing your PC's performance down just to show you false positive reports
>(i use utorrents sites, pirate bay is what I use the most),
i have never got observable malware from a TBP download (usually i get the files that look less suspicious though)
>would have any tips or any program that could identify any viruses within these files?, or a more reliable website?
there's nothing you can do aside from rely on other users' reports. if it's a targeted attack there's no way to detect it without being an expert on your OS internals

Come on, son.
Cutter · 2020-09-29 00:39
If scene groups would just PGP sign their releases, this problem would not exist. Hosters, repackers and any others would not be able to tamper with the files.
Why do they only provide CRC32 checksums on srrdb? It is completely insecure and no faster than SHA256. At least redump provides SHA1.

GazelleGames is probably the best place, but its a private tracker that requires some effort. Maybe lurk /ptg/ on /g/ or /r/trackers if you arent familiar.

That version was not used until 2017 if i recall correctly.
I posted the remixed version because that is what I heard first and like the most.

I second private trackers. Read about them:
https://wiki.installgentoo.com/index.php/Private_trackers
Sometimes some PTs have free-reg, they usually get posted to this site:
https://opentrackers.org/
Some of them accept members by an interview, but the best of them need invites.

1337x.to is my go-to site for torrents, but viruses are kind of rare now, haven't seen one in ages, look for torrents with good reviews.
If you are really paranoid, then isolate your pc by having separate user accounts, one for games and one for everything else, maybe even a vm?
Nemissa · 2020-10-06 15:18
>>33705
User isolation is wholly insufficient given that most games require privileged access at install time and may do just about whatever they well please. VMs are better, but the performance of games inside VMs is often not great. Improvements in GPU paravirtualization are helping, but it's not quite the same.
On the other hand, using PCI-passthrough exposes you to the risks of malicious DMA requests, especially if your machine doesn't have functional IOMMU.
Dox · 2020-10-17 17:29
a lot of
pirated games will have malware
focus on isolation of said games, maybe?
i personally have a seperate hdd for games
it's a eufi windows install and i never use it with other disks or network
euf7, because issue supposedly more secure against bootkits
idk why it would be

Archive.org is good for retro romsets.
Isosland.net, downloadgameps3/downloadgame360.com, and plenty of subreddits for newer console games.
IGG-Games has plenty of PC games and usually run well.
GOG-Games hosts copies of GOG releases.
All of the above provide links to file host sites such as Google Drive. Much better than the headache of keeping up with ratio. Just be sure to use a VPN, only enable Javascript neccesary to get to your link, and use JDownloader to grab your files. IGG-Games is probably the riskiest of the bunch, but nobody I know has ran into any obvious problems using their cracks and such.
(he/him/they) · 2020-10-17 18:28
One option I explored was dual booting my gaming pc to a linux livecd image to play flatpak games stored on persistent partition.
I think at some point an overlay filesystem was part of my plan but I forget why.
(Maybe one of our linux obsessives can pipe in why this was desirable)
Lots of flatpaks on piratebay. Maybe not everything you WANT but more than enough newer free games to always have stuff you want to play
It turned out not to be worth my time compared to just buying them but it might be worth your time and I'd be happy knowing that my plan helped someone.

Not for games but music i was using utorrent years years ago. You can give it a try
