Do any of you use a older, weird device for an actual purpose?
My PS2 has been an mp3 streamer for over a decade now. Just as an example, would like to run more on it but i'm afraid of opening such an outdated OS to the internet.
Have any of you done something like this? looking to read about peoples experiences in using things like, say the ...
ps2/ps3 as a server or perhaps the wii u
or
old, flashed android phones/tablets
or even socs, other than gay arm broadcom SoCs.
Picture isn't mine, I don't run x because 29mb of ram.

As much as I would love to upgrade it to something else,
Linux distros for consoles are not up to date or maintained at all and I cannot really get security patches either way.

Only old device I use is a 6 year old smart phone, but I don't use it for anything interesting besides being a phone. I was interested though in seeing if I can find an old phone with a keyboard that I could install linux on, but haven't looked too much into this (although would probably be better to just use raspberry pi).

Back when all I had was a laptop, I modded my Wii so I could play SNES ROMs more comfortably on my TV. But then I gave it to my sister since I have a desktop now and the pandemic has left her with little to do.

I have a hacked Nintendo Wii running as LAN media player.
It just has a 256GB thumbdrive in the back full of .flac music files and I have it hooked up to a good pair of speakers. Sounds great and has an uptime of about four years currently, I've been running debian on it for longer than that though.

I used to have a Asus EEEPC 900 with a USB webcam and a cron job made to take photos every hour of the forest. Sometimes deer or birds show up in the photos. Snowstorms and sunrises are very pretty. The EEEPC is very broken. The trackpad is dead and the screen just fell off, but it runs fine.
Here are a couple photos from 2018.
The project was something that I really loved until heroin junkies destroyed the last 8 moths of photo data. I was very sad about that. Actually no, I'm pretty upset about it. It was a long term art project out in the woods, not bothering anyone and they ruined it for me.

You should set up a Neocities site and post the photos online, including the junkies ruining all of it. This could be a really good art project / documentary. Also those woods are wonderful, I'd be upset too.

Not sure if this counts.. but.. I use a i386 SBC from pcengines it functions as Tor gateway and GPS clock. I also have sparc64 running a public web service and a couple old PPC running network filesystem and wownero daemon.

Man that really is like kicking dead whales down the beach. It would be cool to see the collection. Nice pics!

Well, since they destroyed the last 8 months of data, it would include any photos from that it may have taken of them. IF they approached the shack from behind and IF they did it exactly at the top of the hour. But you're right. I still have everything from up to before the last time I up north to copy out the photo data, I still can do something with that.

>a older, weird device for an actual purpose?
You can do, but it is often easier and cheaper to get a modern equivalent that has higher specs and is easier to configure.
e.g.
small mobile router with NAS ability > old big ass router needing a power outlet for shorter range.
tiny battery powered SBC server with wifi > old laptop as 24/7 server gets hot enough to cook on

I use a weird intel atom board i bought at an e-recycler as a router. Used to keep an old pentium 2 hp pavilion in my basement for recording music. Still have almost every monitor and television i've ever owned (which is frankly not that many..) and use most of them for all kinds of unnecessary soykaf. Mostly I just use >gay arm broadcom SoCs tho because they're a cheap way to get something small with hdmi and gigabit ethernet, though admittedly pretty boring once you get past the novelty of it.

Lesson learned, more cloaking skills needed for the camera. It's also possible that it could be narco soykaf especially being in the woods. Have you tried looking for chinese/refurbish spare parts to hold it together? If it's just minor cracks I'd just use baking soda +super glue trick and repaint it.

Don't forget to keep all the (broken) laptop (working) screens too, you can get a universal controller board to rework them as a paperthin monitor of some sort.

It's not that weird or old but I repurposed my 6 yr old Android phone into a GPS for my motorcycle. No SIM card, just a downloaded map of my area.
I also have a surveillance cam setup similar to >>31630 but using an older raspi.

My old laptop is more powerful than some soykafty ARM SBC and has big vents and more ports, especially with the docking station. It runs more programs too because its a x86_64 arch, works just fine, save your money.

>i'm afraid of opening such an outdated OS to the internet
It should theoretically be safe to put it online. After all, most malware still going around for old computers is for Windows XP devices with an x86 processor. I assume you're running Linux (what else is there), and the PS2 uses a MIPS ISA. I doubt there's much malware going around for that OS+CPU combination, but the real challenge would be getting any website to display properly.

i dare not try with so little memory

Every laptop I own is around ten years old or older. People underestimate how much a gigabyte of RAM really is, and how fast even older machines are. The only thing that gives me any issues is playing videos and browsing the WWW.
I use an old sansa player with rockbox as a USB drive occasionally.

People don't even realize low end laptops are the same as they were 10ya.
Dualcores with 2 or 3gb ram.

>any website
Well, as far as that goes, it's only the browser you're running
The browser mostly depends on libc, which depends on whoever's compiling your distro, so.....probably quite viable?

I keep a old Galaxy S in my glove box to read OBD II data from one of those Bluetooth plugs. Not sure if that counts.

I do want to. I want to write some sort of ruby scripit to automate the process of taking the date-created file metadata of each photo and printing that date + a link to the photo into a html page.
The battery life was like 10 minutes but that never mattered because it was plugged in.
