Any of you ever made an operating system? I was wanting to make one based off illumos.

I once tried to make a custom lisp os userspace with linux as the kernel, i even had a sort of working primitive prototype with the init being a console. Needless to say it didnt go so well as i hoped and it got stuck in the toilet. One day i will get back to it, but i will probably switch to plan9 as my primary development environment cuz i cant put up with this compiler mess on linux.

>>30791 while i found plan 9 easier to use myself, is 9front not an option for you?

>>30792 Eh yeah i did mean 9front but i mentioned plan9 cuz i didnt want to confuse people too much. The 9front system at the base is the same as plan9 but has more features. I dont mean to make it based on a os/kernel, the idea is to use it to produce the binaries for the system.

>>30794 i love plan 9 i wish p9port wasn't so busted

>>30794 If you are just compiling binaries why would you not want a modern gcc toolchains ? Any linux distribution will do. What hosts the compiler is the most trivial part of the project. Its even easily changeable later.

>>30849 They are terribly overcomplex and particularly prone to problems when using static libraries and glibc with its quirks that are linked to gcc make it untrustworthy at best. It is the main reason i had to discontinue development. I have also tried clang at one point but it to proved too heavy for my needs. In my experience changing the compiler host proved to be too difficult. Plan9 compilers seem simple and easy.

>>30790 If you ever start working on your own Illumos distribution, please consider writing a proper ports system as part of it. I like pkg(5), but having to write my own scripts entirely from scratch or rely on extending the distributions existing build system kinda is like kicking dead whales down the beach. pkgsrc is fine, but it would be really neat if packaging things for pkg(5) were more accessible.

nix on illumos might be neat
