I wonder if E-ink/an equivalent technology will ever catch on. Staring at a glowing rectangle all day gives me massive headaches. If someone found a way to make a non-glowing rectangle work, I'd buy it in a heart beat.

>>30428 They allegedly prototyped a high refresh rate, color e-ink technology a few years ago but it probably won't be used until it can be put into a phone. Sorry for no sources, you can probably look it up.

I'm also a fan of e-ink and hope that it will catch on soon. I'd love to have a non-lithium replaceable battery color e-reader in comic book size. Even better if it had a transparent oled overlay for menus and lighting options. Easy way to solve the the refresh rate issues. I've been considering building my own out of the 3-color displays but honestly I have so fuarrrking many unfinished products and the good tech is so expensive

>>30430 There are color ereaders out now and the color eink panels have been for sale for a while for use in signage. There are also middle ground panels that only do one color in addition to black and white. The nicer ereaders like the Kindle Oasis have the lighting all figured out already, you need a dozen LEDs and matte glass for even lighting and another dozen warm LEDs to really start being able to play with warm lighting. As of right now it looks like the color eink screens are going to need at least a few more years of development to rival the black and white ones we have today. The Nova 2 can play videos in black and white well enough to work in a pinch. The color panel that is out now for ereaders looks nice in its highest quality mode, but drops a lot of colors for the faster modes and ghosting is a massive issue.

Electrophoretic display technology is only suitable for supermarket price tags. For anything not in well-lit rooms it is worse than reading dull soft paper scribbles on soviet toiletpaper. Manufacturerers (actually, only one, E-ink display production is a monopoly) had to invent hoops such as "front light" to make it bearable, and most models can't even determine time of the day despite asking for city for timezone so it constantly blasts at you with one color or intensity depending on make (blame the OEMs). You can see individual LED beams as well. After all, the "ebook" concept was popularized by Amazon who earns 90% of their profits selling machine-generated romance novellas for women. Refresh rate makes it unbearable for anything but static images, as I said: for digital signage it's perfect, for "reading" as in tapping your finger at touch screen, waiting for 1 second wondering whether it's because processor has to switch between sleep and active modes or the display itself, end up 3 pages further than you need, tap back, see 50% of normal book page spread content without tangible tactile and visual cue of progress: thank you, no thank you.

Just saying, have you tried redshift, OP? That's how I deal with the glowing rectangle. Also you could use pomodoro or something like that to take a 5' break every half an hour or something. I don't mean to derail from the topic of e-ink btw, let's not.
Mentat · 2020-08-03 01:29

>>30532 I've an old kindle 4(physical buttons, no light) and I love it. No problems over-scrolling when you have a physical button. No wondering whether it registered when it's a physical button. It even clicks. And, well, I never found light to be an issue. I didn't have a habit of reading glowing books before, and now that you mention it I guess it's a little dimmer than a fresh leatherback, but it sure as soykaf beats any pocket I own. Really, the only complaint I could possibly have is it doesn't do manga, since being as old as time itself, it has like a couple dozen pixels total.

The e-ink renaissance is upon us. Color e-ink (https://youtu.be/C3NEmgG3JyY) + Foldable e-ink (https://youtu.be/Yi3wLzd128A?t=49 = Ultimate mango-reading/notetaking device.

>>30568 Same, a Kindle 4 with KOReader is great. Cheap, huge battery life, easy to pirate, comfortable buttons, no eyestrain, and a screen that's readable anywhere that a regular book is. Reading for long on an LCD is torture by comparison, especially in broad daylight.

>>30532 >For anything not in well-lit rooms it is worse than reading dull soft paper scribbles on soviet toiletpaper. Manufacturerers ... had to invent hoops such as "front light" to make it bearable Do you live in some kind of underground mole colony that never sees light or something? Printed books, magazines, and newspapers don't glow either, do you consider those to be "unbearable?" Even older e-ink screens have contrast comparable to a typical newspaper, and I've never met anyone who has any trouble reading those. >for "reading" as in tapping your finger at touch screen, waiting for 1 second wondering whether it's because processor has to switch between sleep and active modes or the display itself, end up 3 pages further than you need, tap back, see 50% of normal book page spread content without tangible tactile and visual cue of progress I have an e-book reader with a touchscreen (although I'll admit I'd vastly prefer buttons), and I've never had this problem. It reacts quickly enough. Is this something you've actually experienced, or is it just something you're assuming you'd experience if you tried it? >>30534 Light filters and screen breaks are good, but they're just ways of mitigating a problem that e-ink doesn't have in the first place. Non-glowing rectangles feel more like a solution than a stopgap. I do wish e-ink displays weren't so dang expensive. If it weren't for that, I'd like to use one to make a small SBC setup that I could do some work on in contexts where I can stick to textmode terminal stuff (which doesn't need color or particularly high refresh rates). I could keep an eye out for busted e-readers with salvageable displays at thrift stores once that's an option again, but I've never seen one there so that's kind of a tossup.

>>30428 Two things cause most eye strain, near focusing and eye-crossing to match binocular images. There's a sweet spot at around one meter where the binocular images match without any muscle tension. It's also far enough to relieve strain placed on the ciliary muscle by near focusing. If I stay at this distance from the monitor, I never get eye strain, even if I'm in front of it 12 hours a day for months on end.

>>30797 >Two things cause most eye strain, near focusing and eye-crossing to match binocular images. There's a sweet spot at around one meter where the binocular images match without any muscle tension. I wonder if there's an evolutionary explanation for this, as that's reasonably close to the distance between the eye and the hand if one's arm is outstretched.

>>30737 >Printed books, magazines, and newspapers don't glow either They don't need to. They are perfectly readable in moderately lit room regardless of natural color temperatures from warm incandescent 2700K to midday sun. Electrophoretic displays need special LEDs to make paper-like. >older e-ink screens have contrast comparable to a typical newspaper No. Older "e-ink displays" re plain old liquid crystal matrix like in pocket calculators, not even touching those. I specifically compared electrophoretic type to soviet toilet paper. if you don't know how it looked like, boogle it. >It reacts quickly enough. It does not. I've used both Kindle Paperwhite and Kobo Aura. Ereaders should focus on battery life, being as close to paper as possible, and being FLOSS + modular. Anything else just means being a plain old botnet tablet. Colour would be nice for comic books/magazines but anything more like playing videos/games even internet connectivity is overkill.

>>30959 Comic books and technical literature need full spread more than romance novels which are 70% of e-book sales. it's either print or reading from desktop screen. You have been tricked by corporations whose only purpose is to sell you machine-generated texts, show ads and record every location.

current displays shoot light into your eyes. e-ink allows the ambient light to reflect off of it like any other physical object. here are somegood sources for e-ink industry news and advancements: https://www.eink.com/news.html https://www.e-ink-info.com/tags/refresh-rate

>>30428 I hope so too. I got a kobo e-reader recently and it's helped me get back into reading as now I don't worry much about looking at it closely for a long time.

>>30428 Have you setup your screen correctly? The white on screen, shouldn't be any brighter than a white paper you'll hold next to it... I've heard so many times, from people, that black text on white background is so horrible. Who it is? That's how things have been for ages, and people still read books. Low contrast narrow fonts, can be almost unreadable, especially if you're doing that with bad display.

>>30980 How to set up e-ink screens? Personally I use an old kindle 4 running koreader with no problems of eyestrain or anything. Really great software, it expanded the usability quite a lot. Not only can it read epubs now but I can browse wikipedia and pull news via rss.
