lainchanBBS

OP of >>29010 inspired me to expand on their ideas for a telnet lainchan BBS. They also provided the ASCII art for the welcome screen.
Code: https://github.com/nofacereally/lainchanbbs
Test server as of this post:
telnet 157.245.241.132 5000
Have a go at it lainon!
Questions:
How did it work for your terminal?
Any feature requests?
Find a bug you want me to check out?

The welcome screen isn't scaled. I can add that to the list. It's currently static for 80x24 screens.
Also, a broader oops. I didn't consider anyone using a phone to access it, but that makes a lot of sense and totally fits within cyberpunk. I'll work on it!

This is pretty cool, and web technology free, which I think is awesome, but the use case is extremely limited: You cant post.
I understand why you can't post: You would have to proxy posts to lainchan for the user, and that would potentially make you liable for whatever they posted. You could get around this by proxying through TOR on your server side, but lainchan will probably require captchas, preventing your use.
I like the idea of a non-web interface to lain-chain, im just not sure what to do with yours.
This is also, not a BBS. BBSs have user accounts, private messages, and read/write forums. This is just a view only proxy to lainchan.

You can run a local instance. In fact, I think you should.

Took a couple of screenshots from st. It works neat albeit there's a bit of delay when you're typing something on the keyboard. And yes, it does work with torsocks which is neat.

Well, I see a number of issues:
1.) Running a local instance wouldn't let me post - so how would this benefit me?
2.) A BBS doesn't work that way, a BBS is a central store that uses connect to, to post.
Your front end is effectively just a schway read only lainchan front end. Its pretty cool, but not particularly useful.

This is fair. For lurkers that want a text based browsing experience, it'll help. I'm not keen on abusing the API or working around posting limitations to provide the ability to post from this. It's just more of a way to learn Python a bit better and enjoying the process.

Thanks! I've really enjoyed doing it. I'll host it for as long as I can and keep working on it. Who knows, maybe it'll lead to something else.

I found that you can connect by using PuTTY you can connect to LainchanBBS, glad I can access it using Windows.
BloodCat · 2020-08-04 16:55

Hey man, I have a problem setting it up. Following your guide on github I was trying to install the dependencies by executing pip install -r requirements.txt but there is no file named like that. Am I doing something wrong?

If you're in the root directory of the repository, then you probably don't have Python installed, or it's symlinked to something else. Try pip3 install -r requirements.
If you aren't in the root directory, but pip is installed and symlinked properly, change your directory.

OP! Nicely done, I have been keeping an eye on this project of yours since you mentioned it quite some time back. When I find time, I will definitely poke around the code base/
>>31018
There is no language enhancer in effect here.
Miho Iwakura · 2020-08-18 06:16
It needs a relay chat like telehack.com

It's working great for me on Kubuntu in Konsole. Really cool project! It's interesting that Nmap thinks you're running a UPnP service on port 5000, rather than Telnet:
PORT STATE SERVICE
22/tcp open ssh
5000/tcp open upnp
9000/tcp open cslistener
Cypher · 2020-08-19 11:03
I was able to connect from ConnectBot on Android. Very /cyb/. Good work OP.
I kinda wish there was a BBS that wasn't an interface to lainchan, but its own ANSI-based splinter community.

I would definitely participate on a /cyb/ or lain-ish BBS. I've thought of hosting something like that myself. Might be a cool community project.
