Captcha
Wintermute · 2020-03-09 04:01
It seems I am now unable to post on /pol/. I get endless slow fade captchas, failed captchas, and after three or four posts apparently they didn't like what I was saying, as the captcha is successful, then it says I didn't complete the captcha when I go to post.
I said it way back when it first came about, captcha is a big trojan and its propagation is not unlike a beast's many tendrils spreading throughout the tissues of the web. It seems we have finally arrived, as I am barred from posting on /pol/ by something (probably) other than 4chan itself. Non-local control has been established.

I disagree, I don't mind captchas as long as it's a libre one. It has its purpose by keeping away malicious bots and spammers. I wouldn't have issues with having to fill it out every 30 minutes or so on an imageboard. fuarrrk google captcha though.

>I wouldn't have issues with having to fill it out every 30 minutes or so on an imageboard.
It's not every 30 minutes on 4chan. In fact, you don't fill one out at all the first time you post in a session. I'm not sure what the exact pattern is but you have to fill one in after a certain time or number of posts, some combination maybe, and then the rate of CAPTCHAs assaulting you increases. The more you post, and this is more severe during image dumps by the way, the more layers you have to fill in each time. Other users confirm what I'm saying every time I mention it.
It quite directly discourages contribution and encourages lurking. You are punished for sharing pictures on an imageboard. They must have lost hundreds of long time users to this, indicating that there is some higher purpose to it that they've calculated for. The only explanation that makes sense is that they sell passes this way. They must make enough money selling passes to bypass this garbage that it makes up for the lost ad revenue from driving people away.
Imagine being so dependent on your relationship with a for profit hobbyist site, that you pay a monthly fee to avoid a CAPTCHA that is intentionally designed to frustrate the loyal userbase. Just THINK about that for a minute. That's the sort of demographic populating the site these days.

The more privacy measures you take, the longer and more onerous those captchas get. This is a well-proven phenomenon. Supposedly the rationale is that it becomes harder to prove you're human when you're going through all that obfuscation and aren't as easily fingerprinted, but obviously there are ulterior anti-privacy motives involved. It's perfectly possible (for the time being, at least) to prove one isn't a bot without tracing and fingerprinting the connection. It can be done locally and sent back to the remote server through any kind of obfuscating connection for checking and proof, no sniffing and probing necessary. I mean look at the kissanime captcha. Looks like garbage, works just fine. Lots of big captchas (especially the google ones) are mainly tools with nefarious uses and their role as DDOS protection or anti-botnetting are secondary at best.
Also why the hell are you on 4chan, and that board in particular? That place is a huge filthy fuсking psyop. That imageboard is extreme ѕһіt-tier. Take it as a sign and get off of there. Nobody needs to be there. Their choice in captcha is one minor damnation that is part of a veeeery long list of horrible things happening on that site.

I wanted to highlight a certain topic in a high throughput board. I usually (soykaf)post on /sci/ or browse dpt on /g/ occasionally otherwise. 4chan has been pretty much destroyed.
The uses of captcha are too numerous to list. The most interesting thought which has come to mind though is that 4chan is the ideal platform for training an AI. Lot of sarcasm, lot of social context, lot of saying one thing and meaning the opposite with subtle social cues. Beyond that you don't know if the bulk of what you're conversing with are even real people, there could come a point where everyone has their own internet. Where it's no longer a matter of biasing and filtration, but outright fabrication based on psychological profile. Eventually youtube could just be deepfake, all comments made up, so on. Persistence is the difficulty, but that could handled by targeting groups that will be unlikely to ever meet so they can compare what the other is seeing.
Just another form of moving from prediction to control, to creation. Why stop at tracking and manipulating, when you can just make a person outright.

Oh, yes I'm aware how 4chan's captcha works, I was just giving an example because it's related to captchas. It was brought to my attention recently that kohlchan has a 24h captcha. This is secondhand information, I've never posted there, I just find it interesting. Anyways I'll play devils advocate and say that what 4chan does is somewhat justified given that they have an insanely large userbase. My main gripe with 4chan's captcha is that it's literally datamining its users. I can understand why they'd have 4chan pass but my gripe with that is that you can't pay anonymously. Their captcha and pass are intentionally anti-privacy. Then again even if they had a libre captcha I most likely wouldn't post there because quality of threads is usually rather low but that's a topic for another thread.

Yep, reliably reproducible. Interestingly there's quite a delay which could suggest an active monitoring and review component, however I can't rule out keywords or some other factors.

Jewgle captcha was the final nail. Just let it rest already and pretend that 4chan was deleted.
Hiro was kicked off of his own site by his moderation for forcing people onto the pass that didn't break the rules. It's just his same old (((tricks))).
Let it die. Moot trolled 4chan by giving it to the man.

No, it encourages you to pay to avoid them.
It happens everywhere the moment the owner doesn't have the resources to take care of the site and begging proves ineffectual

Except most people aren't going to do that. Certainly the traditional 4chan user is going to ditch the site before they do that. Ergo, it discourages contribution except from the sort of people willing to pay money to avoid a CAPTCHA, which explains the current quality of content there today.

Honestly,it actually really doesn't. I don't actually know what can explain it.

Nostalgia does, we were young and impressionable
Seeing the things that made you wonder and be amused back then you not only know how to do them, you know why you don't bother doing them too. And seeing the things that young and impressionable people today get amused about you wonder what on earth is wrong with them like a good old grandpa.

8kun /pnd/ is similar to 4pol and allows Tor users, might be a government honeypot.
