Do any of you use the federated free sofrware video platform Peertube?
Are some Peertube servers cooler than others? Is there a cyberpunk peertube server like the lain.church jabber server?
I already use federated things like Diaspora and Jabber. But thats all just text, it doesn't take up much space. I don't feel bad about brewing soykaf on them. But video files are huge. I'd feel bad about my videographic shiposts taking up so much space on some poor admins box. But I also really want to try peertube because it seems like really cool software.

Maybe you should actually read the article instead of just stopping reading when you see who wrote it.
Fredrick wrote vichan, the code at the base of lainchan. His political opinion does not matter here, he's explaining technically how he caugh bitchute liying. Go read the answers from bitchute on twitter about this article too. They digged their own grave.
Of course he looked into them because he hate them, but you can't fake technical explanations.
"I could not find a single video that was served via BitTorrent peers. Not a single one. In both Firefox and Chrome, all video data came directly from servers owned by BitChute. "
Either they are faking it, or they have literally 0 user on the site.
The only thing decentralized about bitchute is that they own boxes in different big datacenters and "seed" video from them... and it's not even seeding in reality just a normal http server with a openly accessible video file (.mp4) like... every other website.

I've been investigating alternative methods but that's the cost of block storage from the hosting provider.
The part that really throws me for a loop is the NodeJS part - Peertube is written in NodeJS and I don't really want to have that on anything I control, so I'd end up throwing it into a container.

PeerTube uses webtorrent or some other BS - effectively torrent over websocket - which requires JS to work in a web browser.
The options for the alternative are essentially either download from one place, using regular HTTP, or have a native (web)torrent client to that speaks to the PeerTube API.
In theory, one could do a no-JS AP-based federated video site but if the instance hosting a video went down you'd be out of luck - it's no better than Youtube in that respect.
tl;dr peertube and JS a soykaf but the only worthwhile way to do this in a web browser
It'd just be nice if PeerTube wasn't >nodejs
also YouTube works without JS if you have the video URL
Neo · 2019-12-20 15:39
>>22818
Maybe you shouldn't believe everything you see on garbage clickbait blogs written by frauds.
No soykaf that site doesn't serve videos via 'BitTorrent' it uses web torrents which is a completely different and incompatible protocol. If you want to watch bitchute videos through their p2p network you have to download and install a web torrent client.
What seems more likely; that the developers of the web torrent protocol are lying on github when they talk about bitchute in this thread
https://github.com/webtorrent/webtorrent/issues/1312
That the official for web torrent site is lying when they list bitchute
https://webtorrent.io/faq
That dozens of tech communities on the web that discussed the details about how the bitchute web torrent service works for the last few years are all lying in unison
Or that Frederick Brennan is a liar? Go ahead and grab a web torrent client and try any magnet link on their website to see for yourself. According to Brennan they're fake links that do nothing. See for yourself who's the liar.

>In theory, one could do a no-JS AP-based federated video site but if the instance hosting a video went down you'd be out of luck - it's no better than Youtube in that respect.
Elegant federation would allow easy mirroring. (e.g. I see a video which I want to have available on the internet, so I just click ``mirror'', probably near the ``like'' or ``share'' &c buttons, which copies it to my instance. I would also like to be able to pledge to pay (what/how I pay would be defined by me) an instance to mirror it, so that there is extra incentive to host it.) Only if the last instance which has a copy were to go down, or delete it, would you be out of luck---it is better than YouTube in that respect.
>IS there a single video site that works with disabled JS?
Invidious is inelegant. Also, youtube-dl.
In terms of decentralized video hosting, why not use plain BitTorrent? If it's the ``comments'' or ``social network'' part, why not use a forum (e.g. an ``uploader'' can open a thread with the magnet or .torrent and a brief description, thumbnails,, using templates for often-used forms)? I suppose there would be a desire to be able to see all the discussions from one place. (But I think of videos as merely the data, and the forum post as the thing, because it holds the context.)
(I suppose the question, then, becomes about decentralized forums.) Any other ideas?
>they don't have the courage to write "derezzed"
I've heard that term often. I've tried (fruitlessly) to find it's definition. From what I gather from how it's used, it's meaning is akin to ``derezzed'', but I've seen it used in contexts where ``derezzed'' would be inaccurate. There has, though, always been a general sense of inaccess. Had I a pointer to a resource about ``derezzed'' &c, I would be grateful.

So I've been trying out the Peertube instance "BitTube" lately, and I have to say I'm fairly impressed with their transcoding quality. It beats out Youtube easily. There is something that I find totally baffling, however. Like Youtube, they cap the frame rate of your videos at 30fps. How is it that in the year 2020 we still have video hosting services doing this asinine soykaf?
It's just so perplexing to me that we have all these super progressive, user-oriented video hosting solutions and there still doesn't seem to be one that gives users the options to just host the damn content without transcoding. Look, I'm a big boy, I've been around the video encoding block long enough now. If I keep my hosted files below a certain size, why don't you just let me encode with whatever specifications that I want already? Then you can even save yourself some bandwidth, by not forcing me to upload in the highest quality possible in anticipation of quality-mangling transcoding in the first place.
Seriously, what the fuarrrk is up with this? I started hosting my stuff on Youtube in 2006 and it totally blows my mind that standards on the hosting end have gone almost nowhere after 14 years of technological progress.

Not as big of an issue as with Bitchute, but they seem to overcomplicate what PeerTube does simply as far as decentralization goes. Ontop of this, they have a million third party scripts running on their site (Facebook, Google Analytics, Twitter, etc.), for people that call themselves "privacy conscious", this doesn't strike joy with me.
Where as in comparison, PeerTube has literally nothing as far as third party dependencies. Also PeerTube is part of the Fediverse. I do think PeerTube can use some polishing, but still it needs more creators on it. I think people should at the very least be uploading to PeerTube if they're going to be uploading to LBRY. I've seen many FOSS advocate, privacy friendly, etc. YouTubers (and similar) who upload to both Bitchute and LBRY, also YouTube, but completely ignore PeerTube. It kinda confuses me, because imo PeerTube is the best of the 3, just a little underpolished. But the more people that join, the more they have motivation to work on it. It just needs some content.

>GNU/MediaGoblin needs more love
I really want to love this project. I really do. But the last time I tried to install it, about a year ago, the installation process was a complete soykafshow. Unless it's gotten any better I really don't have any interest in reliving that.
And I'll say this up front: I cut my teeth on Slackware 3.4. I build LFS for fun every few years. I'm no stranger to carefully reading installation documentation and patiently following guides. I've been doing it for literally decades. But Mediagoblin just broke me.
