Thread to defend stallman from the internet mob. Previous: >>20141 Know what happened: https://sterling-archermedes.github.io/ Seed the ZeroNet mirror, the pestilent witch is trying to take us down: http://127.0.0.1:43110/1ArYmjJhnn2Ltf58MgBqqfnH6VSetD6kvS Sign the petition: http://chng.it/GGPxTnfNz6 Quick rundown: The public discussion against Stallman started on September 12 with a post on Medium.com by MIT graduate Selam G. about Stallman's opinions in a private mailing list of MIT's CSAIL. Her post was followed by an article on Vice.com by Edward Ongweso Jr. and then followed by several other articles and public statements, e.g. by The Daily Beast, GNOME Foundation, Software Freedom Conservancy. SPECIFICALLY, THEY HAVE WRITTEN THAT STALLMAN >(1) Defended Jeffrey Epstein (while in reality Stallman was defending Marvin Minsky); >(2) Described Epstein's victims as entirely willing (while in reality Stallman was arguing that one specific victim of Epstein, Virginia Giuffre, was PRESENTED to Minsky as entirely willing because she was coerced by Epstein, not that she WAS entirely willing); >(3) Defended pedophilia (while in reality Stallman was arguing that age doesn't matter in a case of rape because rape is always a terrible act no matter the age of the victim); >(4) Defended pedophilia in the past (while in reality Stallman already countered his controversial claim from 2006 -in which he expressed skepticism in case of consensual sex- with a comment in 2013, where he said that children can't really be consensual); >(5) Condoned sexual assault (while in reality Stallman was arguing that the term "sexual assault" does not fit the description of Minsky's act towards Virginia Giuffre since she wasn't assaulted by Minsky but coerced by Epstein; Stallman also added that the term is generally too vague as it refers to bad acts that can range from harmful to very harmful, and that the term usually makes readers think of the worst case); >(6) Implied that the victim wasn't harmed (while in reality Stallman explicitly claimed that she was harmed); >(7) Made comments that are excuses about rape, assault and child sex trafficking (while he condemned all three as explained above); >(8) Used to keep a mattress in his MIT office, implying sexual activity and/or macho behavior at work (while in reality Stallman is known to have lived in his office for a certain period of his life). As a consequence of these writings, Stallman resigned from his position at MIT and also from his position at the Free Software Foundation. *REFERENCES IN CHRONOLOGICAL ORDER* SEPTEMBER 12 https://medium.com/@selamie/remove-richard-stallman-fec6ec210794 SEPTEMBER 13 https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/9ke3ke/famed-computer-scientist-richard-stallman-described-epstein-victims-as-entirely-willing https://assets.documentcloud.org/documents/6405929/09132019142056-0001.pdf https://www.thedailybeast.com/famed-mit-computer-scientist-richard-stallman-defends-epstein-victims-were-entirely-willing SEPTEMBER 14 https://www.stallman.org/archives/2019-jul-oct.html#14_September_2019_(Statements_about_Epstein) SEPTEMBER 16 https://medium.com/@selamie/remove-richard-stallman-appendix-a-a7e41e784f88 https://blog.halon.org.uk/2019/09/gnome-foundation-relationship-gnu-fsf/ https://sfconservancy.org/news/2019/sep/16/rms-does-not-speak-for-us/ https://stallman.org/archives/2019-jul-oct.html#16_September_2019_(Resignation) https://www.fsf.org/news/richard-m-stallman-resigns *OTHER REFERENCES* STALLMAN ON HIS HOME https://stallman.org/rms-lifestyle.html STALLMAN ON PEDOPHILIA, 2006 https://www.stallman.org/archives/2006-may-aug.html#05%20June%202006%20%28Dutch%20paedophiles%20form%20political%20party%29 STALLMAN ON PEDOPHILIA, 2013 https://stallman.org/archives/2012-nov-feb.html#04_January_2013_%28Pedophilia%29

>>21102 >Learn that autists probably shouldn't be in put in positions that require social finesse? At its core, the free software movement is a social movement. Maybe the president of the FSF shouldn't have been somebody who is socially inept. This is really the core of the anti-RMS argument, "I don't like him, so he shouldn't be in control." Some say he smells, some say he's creepy, and some say he's autistic. Very useful life tip, what makes someone good with other people is how well they handle people who aren't good with other people. RMS has dealt with bizarrely inappropriate socially stunted trolls, like you, for over two decades, but you don't see him lowering himself to their level. >>21122 >There is no anti-RMS argument It's difficult to even know where to start with this. There have been anti-RMS folks since 1995, https://www.xach.com/naggum/articles/19951104T224244Z@naggum.no.html >I think he needs to be dumped in the cold-load stream with a bar of soap. Leave him there for a few hours to clean up, cut his frigging jesus beard and hippie hair off, and lock him out of the AI Lab for a few months or so to let people disinfect the building. >Then maybe they can let him back in, after they have replaced his eunuchs workstation with a SHOWER. And this is explicitly noted as a common occurrence. >I wonder what's wrong with whoever wrote this. I've seen a lot of people express the most intense hatred for RMS, with an accompanying deep interest in vilifying those who work on GNU projects or with him. frankly, whatever it is that might be true in what they say, why should anybody listen to them when _they_ don't want others to listen to someone that _they_ think is mad? it doesn't make much sense, does it? I am sure many people reading this have seen bizarre RMS prejudice. The present day LWN article about RMS's resignation is filled with character attacks. Character attacks on his personality are below. You'll notice that the word 'creepy' is used a lot. It's a nice thought terminating cliche, because it ends any possible discussion. How can you possibly defend yourself against people who think you're creepy? >The question is not whether FSF was diverse. The question is whether he made even a few women uncomfortable, or worse, with his behaviour. The evidence is overwhelming he did. Plus he had self-documented creepy views. > If you lack a way of telling which kind of person you're dealing with, but still go ahead with the card, it implies that you are fine making an interchangeable target out of them by default with no thought and/or care toward their feelings about it. That's a creepy behavior. >It is also creepy, and does not reflect well on any institution he represents. > It's entirely possible for RMS to have made wonderful contributions to the Free Software movement while at the same time being somewhat creepy to women. >Reading the stories of women who have come forward in the past few days who were pushed away/out of our community due to RMS's creepy actions has been very troubling. >RMS was a pioneer in the world of free software, and in other arenas not so much. Politically, he reminds me of Chomsky. Morally... he can be creepy at times. >That aside as well, the dude has said/done some creepy soykaf which could prove damage to reputation of his previous employer and therefore I think his resignation is in the best interest of the FSF and the movement as a whole. >That may well be the case but in the meantime, “not weird and creepy” should already be a more achievable standard to aim for. https://lwn.net/Articles/799375/ And there's the obligatory hygiene quips. >From a practical POV, I think that finding somebody whose personal hygiene conforms to the generally accepted standard would be a start. >Fourthly: let's not disregard the added context that the approach in question comes from someone who does not care enough about the comfort of others to do them the courtesy of personal hygiene. >The UN somehow manages to operate a General Assembly where people from many cultures can apparently congregate without offending one another's sensibilities as to dress, behaviour, and personal hygiene. https://lwn.net/Articles/799375/ Irrelevant character attacks on RMS have been pervasive for decades. There is very much a 'anti-RMS' argument, and it is very weak. >For me this thread speaks about the lack of content nowadays even in an interest focused site. Cyberpunk and technology? lol bring me my soykafty gossip, I want some more of the us vs them mentality to get by. You'll be disappointed to hear trying to have a meta-discussion about this makes you worse than everyone else rather than better.

>>21157 >Then it sounds like the FSF did a good thing in asking him to resign. Handling people who are bad with others doesn't mean doing whatever they ask. I'm much more interested in what the yearly budget report of the FSF will show. Anonymous polling of the associate forum showed that because of the resignation about ~40% planned to reduce support of the FSF, ~40% didn't care, and ~10% would increase support. An annual $10k donation was dropped because of FSF's resignation. In contrast, the most I've seen from the mob is, "Now I'm even less likely to contribute!". Threatening to stop doing something that was never done is a weak threat. Handling people does not mean just doing what a bunch of outsiders scream about. The FSF fuarrrked up. >If that were actually true he would still be leading the FSF. That's a circular argument, so I want to say something like, "I guess he must still be pretty amazing if he's in charge of GNU!", or "Guess he must be pretty amazing to have lead the FSF for several decades!", but it's better to say you've made the same mistake as last time. You think being good with people is about maximizing some arbitrary goal. Before, your goal was making a bunch of scandal chasers happy. The FSF succeeded at that, so you think they're good with people. In reality, they lost funding and public support. Now, your stated goal is helping RMS maintain his position. RMS failed to stay president, so you think he must be bad with people. In reality, he deliberately avoided an internal schism, a schism between people who's values actually matter.

When they're talking about him being "creepy" and "weird" and "[not] conform[ing] to the generally accepted standard," and "not car[ing] enough about the comfort of others," we know what they're really talking about. They want someone who will do everything they want, whenever they want it, with no shred of personal principles or vision. RMS has requested an example of messages that were defending him that were deleted or blocked. He says that with a good example of this it will be possible to show what is happining, and suggests that it would be best to use an example of one that was deleted on the guix list etc, as such would be an example of how those trying to push themselves into control on GNU are censoring. (A good example would be one that would strike the Free Software community as reasonable, and one that doesn't make broad political statements (ex: without referancing feminism, SJW) etc, just defends RMS) I know you've had your messages deleted, and I've seen tons of "Message missing" posts on the mailing lists (obviously I don't know their content). >>21370 >Also what is up with the lack of Green is my Pepper and other positive advocacy and supporting memes ? It is almost like lainons have forgotten. I personally have been watching the situation since the beginning and it became tiresome, while people using the situation to wage slave pedophilia never get tired. Additionally even if the current situation with what Stallman said about Minsky is mostly overblown and arguments against Stallman were mostly wrong, there's one thing Andy Wingo pointed out in the new mail that's too much for me: https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/guile-devel/2019-10/msg00005.html Some of these posts are not bad, because they're just pure logic, but this one is not: https://web.archive.org/web/20170612074722/http://stallman.org/archives/2017-mar-jun.html#26_May_2017_(Prudish_ignorantism) Don't know how old they were, but the entire situation described there is controversial and I can understand that for some people this can be too much to accept Richard as the leader, especially if they were hurt in the past. I know sex with teenagers, if over the age of 12, is not considered by the medical definition as pedophilia, but I'm skeptical consensual sex between an adult and a teenager is a healthy relationship. I did what I could, I talked to devs on mailing lists, I've been looking for helpful information, but that's it. Now it's up to him to defend himself and I'm glad he have finally started talking with people on GNU/Guix mailing lists. He shouldn't be excluded from the project, but I think he should stop playing socially responsible roles, especially because free software enemies are waiting for the slightest mistake - he should've known that and shoud've prevented this. So yeah, even Stallman supporters can get tired.

https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/guile-devel/2019-10/msg00007.html > Now, onto the present. Seeing Mark step down from as a Guile co-maintainer was an indicator that something was amiss internally with Guile. I have a great respect for Mark, but I must admit that I've been extremely disappointed to see him, on internal GNU lists, steadfastly defending what I consider indefensible behavior by RMS. Upon seeing the mail to this list that Mark was stepping back into his co-maintainer role, I had assumed that Andy and Mark had worked through their differences and disagreements and was glad. But now that I know that the truth is that RMS, as chief nuisance, put Mark back into this role without the consent of either active Guile co-maintainer, and without even telling them, I am extremely disappointed and I do not approve. RMS, once again, has abused his leadership role to make unilateral decisions to the detriment of a GNU project. Yet another data point that reinforces my belief that when RMS "leads" the results are negative. This is not the behavior of a leader that I support, and I certainly don't personally recognize him as the leader of GNU. He truly is a broken stair, a stick in the mud, a roadblock. What happens if we pay no mind to him? Does the GNU brand mean anything at this point? If anything, it's probably negative.

Bradly Kuhn outlines his treachery. On Recent Controversial Events > >Tuesday 15 October 2019 by Bradley M. Kuhn > >The last 33 days have been unprecedentedly difficult for the software freedom community and for me personally. Folks have been emailing, phoning, texting, tagging me on social media (\u2014 the last of which has been funny, because all my social media accounts are placeholder accounts). But, just about everyone has urged me to comment on the serious issues that the software freedom community now faces. Until now, I have stayed silent regarding all these current topics: from Richard M. Stallman (RMS)'s public statements, to his resignation from the Free Software Foundation (FSF), to the Epstein scandal and its connection to MIT. I've also avoided generally commenting on software freedom organizational governance during this period. I did this for good reason, which is explained below. However, in this blog post, I now share my primary comments on the matters that seem to currently be of the utmost attention of the Open Source and Free Software communities. > >I have been silent the last month because, until two days ago, I was an at-large member of FSF's Board of Directors, and a Voting Member of the FSF. As a member of FSF's two leadership bodies, I was abiding by a reasonable request from the FSF management and my duty to the organization. Specifically, the FSF asked that all communication during the crisis come directly from FSF officers and not from at-large directors and/or Voting Members. Furthermore, the FSF management asked all Directors and Voting Members to remain silent on this entire matter \u2014 even on issues only tangentially related to the current situation, and even when speaking in our own capacity (e.g., on our own blogs like this one). The FSF is an important organization, and I take any request from the FSF seriously \u2014 so I abided fully with their request. > >The situation was further complicated because folks at my employer, Software Freedom Conservancy (where I also serve on the Board of Directors) had strong opinions about this matter as well. Fortunately, the FSF and Conservancy both had already created clear protocols for what I should do if ever there was a disagreement or divergence of views between Conservancy and FSF. I therefore was recused fully from the planning, drafting, and timing of Conservancy's statement on this matter. I thank my colleagues at the Conservancy for working so carefully to keep me entirely outside the loop on their statement and to diligently assure that it was straight-forward for me to manage any potential organizational disagreements. I also thank those at the FSF who outlined clear protocols (ahead of time, back in March 2019) in case a situation like this ever came up. I also know my colleagues at Conservancy care deeply, as I do, about the health and welfare of the FSF and its mission of fighting for universal software freedom for all. None of us want, nor have, any substantive disagreement over software freedom issues. > >I take very seriously my duty to the various organizations where I have (or have had) affiliations. More generally, I champion non-profit organizational transparency. Unfortunately, the current crisis left me in a quandary between the overarching goal of community transparency and abiding by FSF management's directives. Now that I've left the FSF Board of Directors, FSF's Voting Membership, and all my FSF volunteer roles (which ends my 22-year uninterrupted affiliation with the FSF), I can now comment on the substantive issues that face not just the FSF, but the Free Software community as a whole, while continuing to adhere to my past duty of acting in FSF's best interest. In other words, my affiliation with the FSF has come to an end for many good and useful reasons. The end to this affiliation allows me to speak directly about the core issues at the heart of the community's current crisis. > >Firstly, all these events \u2014 from RMS' public comments on the MIT mailing list, to RMS' resignation from the FSF to RMS' discussions about the next steps for the GNU project \u2014 seem to many to have happened ridiculously quickly. But it wasn't actually fast at all. In fact, these events were culmination of issues that were slowly growing in concern to many people, including me. > >For the last two years, I had been a loud internal voice in the FSF leadership regarding RMS' Free-Software-unrelated public statements; I felt strongly that it was in the best interest of the FSF to actively seek to limit such statements, and that it was my duty to FSF to speak out about this within the organization. Those who only learned of this story in the last month (understandably) believed Selam G.'s Medium post raised an entirely new issue. In fact, RMS' views and statements posted on stallman.org about sexual morality escalated for the worse over the last few years. When the escalation started, I still considered RMS both a friend and colleague, and I attempted to argue with him at length to convince him that some of his positions were harmful to sexual assault survivors and those who are sex trafficked, and to the people who devote their lives in service to such individuals. More importantly to the FSF, I attempted to persuade RMS that launching a controversial campaign on sexual behavior and morality was counter to his and FSF's mission to advance software freedom, and told RMS that my duty as an FSF Director was to assure the best outcome for the FSF, which IMO didn't include having a leader who made such statements. Not only is human sexual behavior not a topic on which RMS has adequate academic expertise, but also his positions appear to ignore significant research and widely available information on the subject. Many of his comments, while occasionally politically intriguing, lack empathy for people who experienced trauma. > >IMO, this is not and has never been a Free Speech issue. I do believe freedom of speech links directly to software freedom: indeed, I see the freedom to publish software under Free licenses as almost a corollary to the freedom of speech. However, we do not need to follow leadership from those whose views we fundamentally disagree. Moreover, organizations need not and should not elevate spokespeople and leaders who speak regularly on unrelated issues that organizations find do not advance their mission, and/or that alienate important constituents. I, like many other software freedom leaders, curtail my public comments on issues not related to FOSS. (Indeed, I would not even be commenting on this issue if it had not become a central issue of concern to the software freedom community.) Leaders have power, and they must exercise the power of their words with restraint, not with impunity. > >RMS has consistently argued that there was a campaign of \u201cprudish intimidation\u201d \u2014 seeking to keep him quiet about his views on sexuality. After years of conversing with RMS about how his non-software-freedom views were a distraction, an indulgence, and downright problematic, his general response was to make even more public comments of this nature. The issue is not about RMS' right to say what he believes, nor is it even about whether or not you agree or disagree with RMS' statements. The question is whether an organization should have a designated leader who is on a sustained, public campaign advocating about an unrelated issue that many consider controversial. It really doesn't matter what your view about the controversial issue is; a leader who refuses to stop talking loudly about unrelated issues eventually creates an untenable distraction from the radical activism you're actively trying to advance. The message of universal software freedom is a radical cause; it's basically impossible for one individual to effectively push forward two unrelated controversial agendas at once. In short, the radical message of software freedom became overshadowed by RMS' radical views about sexual morality.

I'd just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Sphere, is in fact, Belly/Sphere, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, Belly plus Sphere. Sphere is not a digestive system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning Belly system made useful by the Belly's pepsin, pancreatic enzymes and vital bodily components comprising a full DS as defined by RSB. Many organic users run a modified version of the Belly system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of Belly which is widely used today is often called “Sphere”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the Belly system, developed by the Belly Project. There really is a Sphere, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use. Sphere is the stomach fat: the circumference of the system that allocates the organ’s energy build up to the other muscles that you run. The kernel is an essential part of a digestive system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete digestive system. Sphere is normally used in combination with the Belly digestive system: the whole system is basically Belly with Sphere added, or Belly/Sphere. All the so-called “Sphere” distributions are really distributions of Belly/Sphere.

23 September 2018 (Cody Wilson) Cody Wilson has been charged with hiring a "child" sex worker. Her age has not been announced, but I think she must surely be a teenager, not a child. Calling teenagers "children" in this context is a way of smearing people with normal sexual proclivities as "perverts". They have accused him of "sexual assault", a term so vague that it should never be used at all. With no details, we can't tell whether the alleged actions deserve that term. What we do know is that the term is often used for a legal lie. She may have had — I expect, did have — entirely willing sex with him, and they would still call it "assault".

https://www.stallman.org/articles/children.html Most fathers in the US have to work very hard to get money for their children. I did not want a life of running on a treadmill, doing whatever people with money would tell me to do. A large fraction of US fathers eventually get divorced, and subsequently rarely see the children for whom they are spending most of their time scrabbling for money. What a futile life! But even those who are not yet divorced see their children little, since they are so busy at work.

He ain't about to stop: https://www.stallman.org/archives/2019-jul-oct.html#19_October_2019_(Sexual_education) 19 October 2019 (Sexual education) The UK has canceled its requirement for porn sites to identify users. The stated motive for this was to exclude teenagers, but what is important is the tracking itself, not its purpose. Why stop people from viewing porn, if they want to? Much of today's porn is aimed at heterosexual men and presents a totally wrong idea of what women like. When teenage men believe this, they can get twisted. When they practice out what they have learned from this, they can make women very unhappy. Leading them to porn showing sexual practices that various real teenage women really do enjoy would solve this problem in a better way. (This does not require real teenage actors, or even real human actors.) Why replace bad education with no education? Replace it with good education.

18 October 2019 (Protest and arrest for Extinction Rebellion) George Monbiot writes about planning to be arrested for protesting for Extinction Rebellion. (I read that he was indeed arrested.) It is misguided, even unfair, to criticize Extinction Rebellion for being "too white" or "too male" or too whatever of that kind, because that is not their choice. A volunteer activity must to go with those that volunteer. When an activity needs to recruit as many people as possible, it would be self-defeating to reject some volunteers for the sake of demographic balance. Rather, the activity must seek, and welcome, every volunteer that is willing and able to work for the cause. If you would like more blacks or more women to participate in Extinction Rebellion, by all means try to recruit them. But don't criticize the campaign for doing the most it can with the people who have volunteered. Indeed, people from less privileged groups may have rational reasons to hold back. Maybe they have to work 50 hours a week to get by. Maybe they expect the judicial system to treat them with bias. Maybe they can't afford bail and fear being jailed for months if they are arrested, or being stuck for years in a Ferguson-like cycle of fines and jail. Given that privilege exists, I'm glad that people with more privilege are taking advantage of it to take risks for the sake of saving the world from disaster.

Some years ago, Stallman noted to an interviewer that he was miserable: that he almost wished he was never born at all, and that he continued on for the sake of free software; his mission. Stallman has also written that he has chosen to remain "child free" in-part because he has observed the vast majority of fathers pay enormous sums, work their whole lives for another (whomever gives them the money), and then are divorced and forced to pay even more for their sacrifice. That this happens to the majority of such men; each thinking that it won't happen to them at the start. He was not so egotistical to believe he would be some exception. He chose not to start down the path to such a: futile life. He has also written some fiction about AI-love affair. He has also 'defended' paedophillia. Multiple times. The 'normal people', which include Bradly M Kuhn (neither a programmer, nor a lawyer, yet feels standing to viciously publically libel Stallman (in the non-american sense)) have pieced these things together and see: A programmer nerd, who, rather than become a mule for a woman/society, would rather have either an artificial wife (like seen in japanese Anime), or a child bride. What they see is, to use their own new term: "An Incel". They then deduce that Stallman would be much happier in some ways a traditional Muslim society, or an old Jewish society: and hates American society. Thus they attack him. They've infiltrated his projects, attempted to divide him from his friends (by driving them out first and away from him, and taking positions in their place), and are attempting to wrest from him the one thing that keeps him going. *(Many of their copatriots have stated they wish he was dead or in prison; some have stated they wish to effect atleast an imprisonment.)

Good. normal people do NOTHING, but attempt to control EVERYTHING. They are social creatures; not programmers; not thinkers; just worker automons (at best) >As someone who cares about the people who work in technology, Stallman’s views might contribute to talented people leaving the space. >>21624 But to answer your question: he means anyone with the ability to speak. It is pretty shocking to the current generation of techies what was considered mainstream in the 70s [0], wherein every important French left wing intellectual of the period signed in support. >Such a long time in remand to investigate a simple `vice’ affair, where the children have not been victims of the slightest violence, but have to the contrary testified before the examining magistrates that they consented — although the law at present denies them their right to consent — such a long time in remand we do consider scandalous in itself. Today they risk to be sentenced to a long prison term either for having had sexual relations with minors, boys as well as girls, or for having encouraged and taken photographs of their sexual plays. We believe that there is an incongruity between the designation as a `crime’ which serves to legitimize such a severity, and the facts themselves; even more so between the antiquated law and the reality of every day life in a society which tends to know about the sexuality of children and adolescents [0] https://www.ipce.info/ipceweb/Library/00aug29b1_from_1977.ht...

2 November 2019 (Non-denunciation) A woman in the UK received a child porn video and forwarded it to friends in outrage. One of the people she sent it to was her sister, a cop. Now the cop is being prosecuted for not denouncing her sister as a criminal for this. The article does not say whether the sister who sent it will be prosecuted too.
