Quick rundown:
The public discussion against Stallman started on September 12 with a post on Medium.com by MIT graduate Selam G. about Stallman's opinions in a private mailing list of MIT's CSAIL. Her post was followed by an article on Vice.com by Edward Ongweso Jr. and then followed by several other articles and public statements, e.g. by The Daily Beast, GNOME Foundation, Software Freedom Conservancy.
SPECIFICALLY, THEY HAVE WRITTEN THAT STALLMAN
>(1) Defended Jeffrey Epstein (while in reality Stallman was defending Marvin Minsky);
>(2) Described Epstein's victims as entirely willing (while in reality Stallman was arguing that one specific victim of Epstein, Virginia Giuffre, was PRESENTED to Minsky as entirely willing because she was coerced by Epstein, not that she WAS entirely willing);
>(3) Defended pedophilia (while in reality Stallman was arguing that age doesn't matter in a case of rape because rape is always a terrible act no matter the age of the victim);
>(4) Defended pedophilia in the past (while in reality Stallman already countered his controversial claim from 2006 -in which he expressed skepticism in case of consensual sex- with a comment in 2013, where he said that children can't really be consensual);
>(5) Condoned sexual assault (while in reality Stallman was arguing that the term "sexual assault" does not fit the description of Minsky's act towards Virginia Giuffre since she wasn't assaulted by Minsky but coerced by Epstein; Stallman also added that the term is generally too vague as it refers to bad acts that can range from harmful to very harmful, and that the term usually makes readers think of the worst case);
>(6) Implied that the victim wasn't harmed (while in reality Stallman explicitly claimed that she was harmed);
>(7) Made comments that are excuses about rape, assault and child sex trafficking (while he condemned all three as explained above);
>(8) Used to keep a mattress in his MIT office, implying sexual activity and/or macho behavior at work (while in reality Stallman is known to have lived in his office for a certain period of his life).
As a consequence of these writings, Stallman resigned from his position at MIT and also from his position at the Free Software Foundation.

RMS: You did nothing wrong.
You defended your friend and colleague; this is the correct thing for a man to do.
You will notice that the white men attack you and have their knives out the very moment an opportunity arises (not to mention the women, but that is a given), while the Latin men support you.
This should tell you all you need to know.
Your life's work has not been in vain: we: the programmers support you, and have supported you through our actions. We build free software, in accordance with your principals.
What do the proud white men and women do? They simply defend "white womanhood"; they attack you while embezzling the donations funded to your organizations. They do not program, they instead eject the programmers from their own founded projects and place female political officers at their heads (or an equivalent there-of).
These people are your enemies: white men and white women who exist only to exalt "the white woman". It is a tale as old as America, as old as England in-fact. It is the only care white men have. That is why they betray you.

It most likely is. This smells a lot like some attempt to attract people from a well-known Pit Of Lunatics to associate them with the efforts to clear Stallman's name, thereby giving people ammunition against it. Wouldn't be the first time something like this has happened. Hell, it's become so commonplace that there should have been a name for it by now.

RMS obviously doesn't agree with the pedo witchunt. Maybe he draws the line at having sex with children (e.g, 10 and under), but there are still many other things that you can disagree with in Murica and get v& over.

This really is starting to feel like some paid actor BS to ruin free software from the inside out. It's like they don't understand they can just fork projects and work on it on their own if they dislike or disagree with something, which is what plenty of people do.

I think you guys are getting a little too focused on this specific event, when in fact RMS has had a long history of unsightly views and behavior. Supporting things like forced sterilization and consensual pedophilia. As well as his poor social behavior and hygiene making people uncomfortable. These aren't damning for a regular person, but it is for a public figure with honorary positions... This soykaf was bound to happen as Stallman was never gonna change or learn to stfu about unnecessary soykaf.
It is a shame that the thing that forced him out was so hyperbolic, and is being used as motivation for pushing good people out of the FSF. We should all work together to defend the FSF board from unreasonable criticism.
I just hope that whoever takes over the FSF will hold true to RMS's software philosophy and be more presentable publicly so we can keep growing the free software movement, We need the FSF now more than ever, before corporations co-opt "open-source" software philosophy away from us.

Feminism isn't anything new, and it's a "white" phenomenon (ie: english). It's been going on since the 11th century with the re-writings of the english epics by order of noble-women. There is always hate for men, and a desire to raise the woman above him, in said cultural tradition.

There are those who want him gone because because they want less anti-propriatory advocacy, and more corporate friendly rhetoric, and for all I know they might have been the ones pushing this for years.
But it's these people, these newly political, very "conscious", liberals (in the worst sense) that have just been gathered and spun up against old-school free software because of opposition to freedom 0 (not 1, btw). I saw this on the Fediverse a few weeks back, when someone was saying that sites like "Gab" have given "Free Software" so much of a bad name, that the concept should be dispensed with entirely. It disgusts me that these people don't even understand what it is they are using, what it is they are opposing, and what it is that they are ultimately doing.

White men demand the arrest of Richard M. Stallman:
https://kgov.com/bel/20190916
>* Defending Pedophilia: MIT professor Richard Stallman has made a career of defending pedophilia, yet he remains on staff at the university. We call for his termination, (and arrest).
Some lines later:
>Today's resource: God's Criminal Justice System: Does the Bible support the death penalty before the crucifixion? How about after the crucifixion? The death penalty forms the centerpiece of the Gospel. The first and last books of the Bible deal with execution, as do the Old and New Testaments generally. Enjoy this presentation of God's ideas about criminal justice. Many Christians pray for an open door to share the Gospel with a friend. That door opens with every newscast, and with the reading of every newspaper, for those who benefit from God's Criminal Justice System. Meanwhile, discover the unique style of Bob Enyart and enjoy all of his teaching tapes.

There's lots of anti-Stallman sentiment from the tech crowd who claim to be FOSS people, but when questioned about their stance on Libre software/hardware, they unequivocally defend proprietary systems and corporations because of the financial contribution or widespread adoption of FOSS software (n.b. for their own profit to the detriment of society). This is the kind of soykaf we're dealing with - the movement has been thoroughly infiltrated with elements that are farthest removed from the ideology at its core.

The root of the problem is sponsorships from corporations or, worse, their programmers working on FOSS directly. You get programmers hired by Google and Microsoft and such, and they work on the linux kernel and other FOSS, and there's a lot of those guys, and they do follow their employer's line of thinking and undermine the community from inside. That practice needs to be derezzed or at the very least frowned upon if we want to keep FOSS safe in the long term, we can't have corporations pretend the community is making a decision when it's them doing it.

Marc Benioff from SalesForce is behind the attack on GNU and Free Software. He declared death to software long ago.
USA Today: "Salesforce CEO leads charge against software" By Jack Gruber July 24, 2007
https://archive.fo/hu6h9
> Its goal, given Benioff's predilection for hyperbole, was ambitious: make software that runs as a service over the Internet — much like a tenant would use electricity and water only as he or she needs them — instead of as an expensive and bulky installation on a company's PCs. The service would chiefly help businesses manage sales operations, tracking leads as they come in and are distributed through the system.
> It's no surprise, then, that Salesforce's long-running slogan is "The end of software" — a slap at SAP, Microsoft, Oracle and Siebel Systems, which make most of their money selling bigger software systems. Salesforce, in contrast, sells its product as a service, available over the Web by subscription. But the kicker was that Salesforce's service cost a fraction of its competitors' offerings and was tailored for individual users.
> "We don't want to create a company but a movement for on-demand services," Benioff says, smiling in glee. "Siebel is the one-night-stand approach to software. We're like a marriage."
> "When you ride the edge of marketing like we do, you can easily fall off and, unfortunately, we occasionally do," Benioff concedes. "But you have to get back on, because you can't win every battle in a long war. You just have to win the war against software."
Bob Arctor · 2019-09-28 21:32

Yeah, that's one of the risks of putting your name on things. If I were Theo, I'd do it pseudonymously. Then, everything that I say relevant to the project would be said neutrally, even if composing the message takes more time. if I have something to say that isn't strictly related to progressing the project, I use another identity. This way, worst case scenario, whatever I say that could be perceived as toxic will be attributed to a less significant member of the project. The project, like all projects, would have it's share of toxic people, but the master would be immaculate, albeit hermitly.
Splicer · 2019-09-29 06:53
>I feel like this is all leading up to the 2020s becoming the decade where we firmly slip into "real" cyberpunk.
Be careful with that sentiment. My prediction is that, when the world becomes as what you currently think of as 'real' cyberpunk, you will think of something worse that is 'real' cyberpunk,. We have been living in a world akin to a cyberpunk dystopia for ages. The reason that the cyberpunk genre exists, and is so compelling, is because we live in such a world as described by cyberpunk. The initial authors of what we now call cyberpunk, they saw what the world was like in the 'informatic boom', not from the perspective of those with steady lives, who saw great benefit in greater convenience, nor from the perspective of those on top, who got greater and greater luxury at lower and lower costs, but from the perspective of those in poverty.
They saw, effectively, what all intelligent persons would see when they look at poverty: that the people in poverty, just to live decently, would have to either: be really clever, able to hack the systems around them, or, know someone who knows, and will tell them, how to deal with the systems around them. People in poverty often do that. That's one of the reasons that I artificially restrict my budget to be below the poverty line, so that I have to be always completely aware of the workings of all the systems that exist around me, so that I can hack my way to get all I need. That keeps me sharp, and gives me 'fresh' (i.e. obvious, if you just look) insights to problems that puzzle people who are trapped in their comfort. That, in turn, gives me far too-much money that I'll never spend. Maybe I'll end up as a cranky old milliardaire, that'd be fun. Probably not.
Cyberpunk merely noticed that, with the rise of informatic systems, the clever paupers would start turning to the informatic systems. Many did. More do.
Or, the initial cyberpunk authors saw some clever paupers turning to the informatic systems, and thought that that was cool, so they wrote some stories about clever paupers hacking informatics.
So, if you want 'real' cyberpunk, be clever (be clever anyway, irregarding your want for cyberpunk), and be, effectively, poor. I don't recommend real poverty, because, in any case, you can get harmed very bad from stuff you can't control, but in poverty, you have less ability to prevent that, and less ability to restore yourself to decency, than if you have sufficient income but choose to restrict yourself.

(Pseudo)anonymity is probably the easiest way to combat cancel culture. They can't cancel you if they don't know who you are and every thing you do has a different name on it. Of course, there's a myriad of problems that come with it, not the least of them that if a hacker ever manages to take over your account, it's going to be hard to prove who you are. And the fact that donations would either have to be not disclosed to the government, or have the government have a very good idea of who you are while nobody else does and so nobody would miss you if you just vanished into some blacksite.

>(Pseudo)anonymity
What is pseudoanonymity? Is it what looks like anonymity, but it isn't? I don't get how nonanonymity that looks like anonymity would be anything but pernacity.
>cancel culture
What is cancel culture? It looks like just another opaque term that people could use refer to whatever. We're intelligent people, let's be more descriptive.
What does it mean to cancel somebody?
Perhaps if these terms are explained, I could respond to your statement about pseudoanonymity combatting cancel culture. As it stands, it's just nonesense.
>blacksite
Again, opaque terminology.
>i deleted my own comment because i realized i misread. it's actually talking about him being fsf's president there
That's not a good response to being wrong. It would be better to acknowledge the mistake and offer a correction. The only acceptable reason for deleting a comment is that the conversation would be better from that comment being deleted.
>if a hacker ever manages to take over your account, it's going to be hard to prove who you are
Why would it be necessary to prove who you are? Act such that your actions are valuable. Insist that everyone look at each of your actions as critically as they would look at the actions of an inchoate identity. Write your messages so that people can see the value of the message from the message, not from the person. Set up your systems so that it isn't important who does what, just that what is beneficial to have done is done, and done well.
Further, if an intruder gains access to one of the identities, they'll be gaining much less than if the (fewer) identities were larger.
There is always the problem of intrusion, but that is a separate question.
Regarding the question of (lain, rms):
I don't think lain would ever say anything based solely on opinion. She seems to be extremely pragmatic in what she does. lain would certainly be for freedom of software, but GNU isn't free software.
Being Chief GNUisance of the GNU Project does not entail having a position in the GNU project. What it suggests to me is that he, irregarding pariahship, will continue his gadfly open-source activism.
>We call o[u]r society progressive, but is it really? (Food for thought.)
It is progressive. There's no food for thought in that question. That's not to say that everybody in society is for progress. There are many who retard society. For a change to be progress, it has to be a good change. If it's not a good change, it will be reverted. That's the thing about progress, it'll come about one way or another. Because, if something is good, and a person knows it's good, he'd have to be crazy to not accept the good that is it.

There's openwashing -- I hate the word though -- everywhere. Like people say how much they love 'open source' and all but what they mean is how they can restrict the definition and make it mean nothing like the free software and even open source people envisioned.
Open source now means just be trendy and release soykafty 20LOC js libraries while you get your infrastructure in one of the huge cloud providers and build for oppressive platforms.

I disagree. Richard Stallman acts in ways that make people more powerful than him feel uncomfortable by sticking up for the rights and freedoms of those less powerful -- the users of software.
RMS is in this situation because he made those in power feel uncomfortable enough to mischaracterize him and quote him out of context.

This is why I sign the hashes of my distribution binaries with PGP.
Even if taken over the signing chain, I can at least revoke my PGP key while recreating a new signing key.
Those files like SHA256SUMS.txt distributed with OS install images, for example, are signed. So you can verify the checksum, then ensure that the SHA256SUM.txt list has been signed by a valid public key crypto and has valid connections in the PGP trust graph.
Many people complain about non encrypted (non HTTPS, e.g. HTTP or torrent) downloads, but when your binaries are signed in this way, it really doesn't matter. You should verify your software signatures anyway, esp. OS images which contain repository signatures for other software, etc.
We don't really have a solution to multiple maintainers having control of the main key and pushing out others besides revoking trust in the key from the trust graph, but that won't flag the key as invalid. This is why key positions in the software hierarchy are vulnerable and important even when the code is Free Libre / Open Source.

Why do the FSF staff censor an email like this supporting the founder of their organization and the founder of the Free Software movement?
Has the FSF become another Fake Community?
Since raising the issue of censorship in FSF, I received a number of emails from people who feel their own communications have been censored. It looks like censorship is being used for multiple reasons:
To censor communications about the lynching of Richard Stallman and hide the voices supporting him
To hide the questions about former FSF employee Molly de Blanc and the conflicts of interest that helped her rise to the role of OSI board president.
To hide questions about money from Google that has poisoned other organizations ($300,000 to Debian before the Debian Christmas lynchings, €75,000 to FSFE when they abolished community representatives). How much does FSF receive from Google, why do they dodge these questions?
Just as MIT Media Lab staff systematically hid donations from convicted sex trafficker Jeffrey Epstein, Free Software organizations are systematically hiding donations from Google. Censorship is one of the tools they use to achieve this deception.

Attacking is cheaper then defending. The most economic choice is thus destroying whoever threatens you instead of just trying to fend them off.

You can still contribute, you can still help. RMS might have been backstabed by the wrong people, but the rest can ensure that the project stays on track as fas as possible. When contributing packages, add an innocent pro-RMS signature. When discussion issues in mailing threads, bring up his articles. As you say, it's a single point of failure. If they didn't kick him out, he would have probably died in 10-20 years, where the same issues would have been brought up. Either way, we can ensure that the FSF, GNU and the individual projects stack on track, not by boycotting or abstinence, but by getting more involved, as one should after all!

No, you're actually wrong - that's exactly what proprietary users want you to do - they want to split the community and make free software weaker.
I don't have to like Ludovic nor any other Guix dev, but as far as I can contribute and make free software stronger generally, it's the right thing to do.
I'll make sure they stay on track with protecting all 4 freedoms and they won't waste both the work of RMS and their.

I respectfully think that your interpretation is incorrect.
Keep in mind that each of the signatories has typically more than 10
years of experience as developer or maintainer of GNU (more than that
for some.) They have dedicated a large part of their life to that, and
they have worked a lot with GNU and RMS. So it really isn’t about what
“the media” said last week or the week before.
Perhaps you find our decision hard to understand, or perhaps you
disagree with it, but remember that we have a different perspective.
RMS created GNU, but GNU has long expanded beyond RMS, and free software
has expanded way beyond GNU, too. We must keep it striving and reach
out to those who’ve not yet joined us to share the software!

If this is the case then the timing of this move is really very unfortunate. If this is a decision many years in the making then it seems hard to imagine a worse time to publicly act on it than in the midst of the shockingly unfair media pile-on that RMS has been subjected to recently. Anyone looking from outside is of course going to conclude that this action is directly related to the recent and widely publicized public lynching of RMS and not a reaction to other past issues that have not been publicly discussed or disclosed.
> We must keep it striving and reach
> out to those who’ve not yet joined us to share the software!
If it somehow was not clear to you before that this action would drive some people away (including people who already are firmly aligned with the true values of the free software movement) then it should be apparent now. The only reason I'm commenting is to add a voice to emphasize this in the hope that if you failed to realize you would alienate people (which seems to be the opposite of your stated aim) that you will realize it now and reconsider your approach.
Freedom has many powerful enemies and I can't have confidence in GNU's ability to stand up to enemies like nation states and global corporations if it is led by people who can't even stand up to a rabid twitter mob and a bunch of agenda driven journalists spreading lies and misrepresentations.

That's basically:

I agree with you that they are letting themselves be influenced or pressured by the moral panic. When I saw other people doing that online, simply asking them for examples of rms' past "problematic behavior" led to silence or to things that have already been reviewed in OPs article.
Maybe ask him to elaborate further and see if he is able to do so. He probably won't and hopefully he will then realize his mistake.

No, they are traitors and infiltrators. 10 years is nothing in Free Software, that goes by in the blink of an eye. I've been working on one project alone for 10 years, let alone others.

Quote:
The great tragedy of RMS's tenure in the supposedly universalist FSF and GNU projects is that he behaves in a way that is particularly alienating to women. It doesn't take a genius to conclude that if you're personally driving away potential collaborators, that's a bad thing for the organization, and actively harmful to the organization's goals: software freedom is a cause that is explicitly for everyone.
We already know that software development in people's free time skews towards privilege: not everyone has the ability to devote many hours per week to what is for many people a hobby, and it follows of course that those that have more privilege in society will be more able to establish a position in the movement. And then on top of these limitations on contributors coming in, we additionally have this negative effect of a toxic culture pushing people out.
The result, sadly, is that a significant proportion of those that have stuck with GNU don't see any problems with RMS. The cause of software freedom has always run against the grain of capitalism so GNU people are used to being a bit contrarian, but it has also had the unfortunate effect of creating a cult of personality and a with-us-or-against-us mentality. For some, only a traitor would criticise the GNU project. It's laughable but it's a thing; I prefer to ignore these perspectives.
Finally, it must be said that there are a few GNU people for whom it's important to check if the microphone is on before making a joke about rape culture. (Incidentally, RMS had nothing to say on that issue; how useless.)

Other person here. Slightly unrelated comment and I disint read the links.
The internet mob trying to attack rms has been around for a while. They compiled all the “problematic” posts the “journalists” published. They had all this time but curiously didn’t bother reading the originals either, everytime you tried to talk to them and showed why they were wrong they would just say “there are a lot of other things too” but never show any of those that were any better than what we’be seen.
Sara and the coc tranny are two of those.
On this specific case, if they are not part of the bandwagon they might be the machinists.
