Hey Lains. My brother just got me a Raspberry Pi 3 B as a gift the other day, and I was curious about the kind of things that could be done with it.
I was kind of thinking getting a monitor, keyboard, and mouse for it, installing a lightweight Linux distro, and turning it into a little brewing soykaf desktop station. However, the specs have me a little wary about this. Should I just use it for network ad-blocking instead?
When use a Pi 3 B? What'd yo do with it?

tons of possibilities, could do a home server, pihole as you mentioned. Not sure about it's capabilities, but if it's any reassurance, I slapped void and dwm on one and it performed as smooth as on every other machine. I didn't play with browsers, I imagine that wouldn't go too well. You could host a mattermost instance (worked great in my case) for you personal friend circle, you could try running a webradio, host a mumble server, hsot XMPP, make a mail server, make an sftp dropzone for file sharing. People slap raspbian and bloated services on one all the time, you can expect it to handle most workloads adequately well. Good look finding inspiration lainon

If you're committed to use it as a lightweight workstation, that's totally possible. But a server is also good, I had one running void linux for ~1 1/2 years a while back, and it was quite comfortable.

I used it to learn the basics of /osdev/.

I've used https://wiki.freebsd.org/FreeBSD/arm/Raspberry%20Pi to install freebsd on mine recently.
I've heard that on servers it's way faster and more light-weight than your normal linux, and also because I wanted to learn it. I hadn't have the time since to play with it but you might want to give it a try.

You could try installing Plan 9 on it, http://9front.org hardware for it is hard to come by, it is an opportunity for you to experiment with it.

BTW you could also try installing OpenBSD https://www.openbsd.org/arm64.html it is well suited for minimal desktop doings, with xenocara being installed (optionally) all along with the base it should also be faster to set up.
>Should I just use it for network ad-blocking instead?
Why not do both?, with either *BSD you should be using PF https://www.openbsd.org/faq/pf/

As an addendum to what lainon said, you should ASAP connect your machine's ntp daemons in your LAN to it if it is on all day. You could also run a searx instance, you can torify it as you wish (highly recommended) but do not expect google search to work if you do.

I'm currently doing this with a Raspberry Pi 4 right now. I tried doing this with a 3 in the past, but it wasn't powerful enough for what I wanted to do. Currently I use my Pi 4 as a router between my Desktop and my Router. Pihole is always a good option if you're into that, but I'm a uBlock man.

The mattermost instance for a friend group sounds like a good idea too. I'll probably give that a go if the lightweight brewing soykaf station doesn't work out. I'll give Arch or Void with i3 a try or something.

What did you do with your server exactly? I've considered making one but I'm pretty much a fool when it comes to server-related stuff so I wouldn't know what to do. I've considered using it to store my music collection or something.

I'm not really a programmer but mite b cool. Might give it a go if I ever wanna learn.
>>19316
I'll give FreeBSD a try if I'm not happy with the performance of Linux. I've always wanted to try messing around with it, anyway.

9front works on Pis? I'll have to give that a try too just to mess around. Seems like I'll wanna do a lot of tinkering before giving my Pi a set purpose.
I didn't realize it would be possible to use it both as a workstation and for ad-blocking at the same time.

What exactly were you doing that it wasn't powerful enough for? Was it just chan posting or were you doing other stuff too?
Thanks everyone for your responses and ideas btw. I didn't realize so much was possible with such a little computer.
