What is your absolute worst tech fuarrrkup?
When I was a teenager, I was fuarrrking around and accidentally wrote over the wrong hard drive (I don't even remember what I was trying to do). This resulted in several hours of panic and attempting to save what I could. Unfortunately, I permanently lost some really horrible teen angst poetry.
Jean Dupont · 2019-06-22 07:09
Well, either that period during which I had every single byte of (emotionally) valuable data and rare media on a 1TB external drive without any kind of redundancy. Yes, it died without any warning signs.
Or the time I, uhhh... Got too high on psychedelics and clawed around inside my computer, tangled up in it's cables (not intentional mind you). Wouldn't boot afterwards. It was just an inexpensive (sub $100) used machine, still sucked having to use a first gen pi as my main PC until I could afford a replacement though.

My fuarrrk up was similar to both of these as I overwrote an external by accident. Lost a bunch of stuff; but thankfully it wasn't a total loss as I had an older archive laying around.

Same, though it didn't overwrite much, so I've saved everything I wanted.
Faye Valentine · 2019-06-22 17:18
most of my fuarrrkups were storage related so far. from dd of=/dev/sda instead of /dev/sdb to chown -R root:root / instead of /root.
Faye Valentine · 2019-06-26 10:03
I didn't plug in the backup hard drive correctly and thus the drive I had to clone wrote itself to soykaf. Had an internship at a public transportation company at the time and this fuarrrkup caused a major outage for the evening.

I forgot the password to my master key database (kdbx) after hours despair I finally accepted my fate and started over
Roger Pollack · 2019-06-26 15:52
Soon after turning 18, I finally got to replace the toaster I had been using since I was 12 (and which was made when I was 6). I copied what I thought was all of my data over, then later on I decided to throw Linux on it just to mess around with it on a real computer. A couple years after that, I realized there were some things on there that I forgot to move to my new machine, namely godawful FL Studio songs and some other things that I kept outside of my user folder. Not that they were any good, but it just feels nice to have an archive of everything I've ever made in my life, no matter how much it may suck.
In terms of files that matter, I distrohopped earlier this year and forgot to back up this game I was working on before doing so. Luckily I still had an old version from when I was moving from hard disk to SSD, but I still lost months of work.

1) I was cleaning my printer from ink that after custom modding of catridge got all over case. I accidentaly shorted the circuit when the printer was one, and it died. fuarrrk me sideways for this.
2) I had a great smartphone which I got almost for free from some contest. I used it for 4 years w/o any issues, didn't even use any protection like case or glass cover. One day when I was on a bicycle I accidenaly pushed that phone with my hand against bicycle handlerbar grip. The screen cracked and now it's doesn't work anymore.
3) It was a winter and streets were icy. I was rushing towards uni because professor was a piece of soykaf who didn't let students in if class has already started. I slipped and fell over. My thinkpad screen cracked, and almost 50% of it died. At least I learned a lesson - never let assholes poison you with anxiety, it doesn't matter if you have to go through argument with them or get some soykaf from them.

When i was a teenager i was fuarrrking around with hacked cracked modded Windows 95 and 98 CD's, trying to install them and multi-boot with Windows XP and Ubuntu. One of the CD's was such a pretty one that when you boot it, it instantly starts to deep-format the entire hard drive. So i lost all the soykaf i had, everything. I stopped it something like quarter way through, so lots of data remained, but the allocation table was destroyed. I recovered a few things with EASEUS recovery wizard, but most of the things are lost forever because of fragmentation.

This is legitimately my biggest fear. Between this or FDE passphrase loss, I'd be fuarrrked. Starting to think I ought to write them down and stash them in a safe deposit box or something.
I'm sorry to hear that happened, Lain. How bad was the recovery?

not me but my stepmom was goofing around on facebook looking at conspiracy pages. She clicked on a link on one of them and her webcam turned on and heard a womans voice saying "Hello are you there?".Since then she covered her laptop webcam with a sticker and is more careful of what she clicks on.

The first time I got a VPS I was reninstalling it several times a day for a week or more. I couldn't connect to it through VNC and I just managed to fuarrrk up sshd or iptables over and over most of the time

1) Got frustrated while learning Linux. Ragetyped "rm -fr /". Wait, is my MS-DOS partition still mounted? Fuaaaark!!!
2) Dropped a screw on my motherboard while the PC was still running. The power connector got some nice burn marks. No sir, the warranty doesn't cover this kind of damage, but we can do a discount on a new motherboard. Thanks, but I can't afford one right now...
3) Adding a system board on a client's server. Why can't I plug this motherfuarker? Maybe I should push a little harder? Orrrr maybe I should have removed the plastic protection on the board's connector first.... Great, I've fuarked the backplane, the part we all prayed we'd never had to replace...

How did that turn out?
Jean Dupont · 2019-07-09 22:39
My worst was probably when I was trouble shooting an old PC that wouldn't post, I started to get a little frustrated and was trying to see if the power supply wasn't giving it enough power, I for some reason tried a 4 pin video card power supply connector to the 24 pin motherboard connector on the power supply tester, my logic was that it didn't work in any area outside of the middle, so I thought that it would work, a flash and bang later it never powered on again.... it was pretty funny to everybody else who was around when it happened though.

I had a hacked togther "desktop" computer made from a laptop with the screen and keyboard removed, using an external monitor, mouse and keyboard. Worked really well for about 4 years, even when I put it through some soykaf. Loved that tough little bastard.
Had some scripts to run on startup to initialize the external monitor and turn off the (now removed) original screen.
One day I decided I wanted to play minesweeper, (I was running Lubuntu so it was not preinstalled like on windows). Somehow, the minesweeper game I apt-get installed fuarrrked up my display settings. No more external monitor display. Couldn't even SSH into it to fix it seeing as it was my only computer.
Don't play minesweeper kids, you might just hit a mine.

Built a super-secure machine due to paranoia, with TPM full-disk encryption and BIOS password and everything. Of course, since I'm a security-conscious guy that knows his stuff, I choose giant passwords with random special symbols and don't write them down anywhere.
Long story short, the motherboard could be saved after de- and resoldering the battery. The SSD was a goner though, along with all the data.

I bought a japanese Hello Kitty dreamcast with my first salary.
I am in Europa.
I plugged it into the power outlet.
The dreamcast burned because of the voltage difference.
I was so upset.

Ffffffffuuuuck that is like kicking dead whales down the beach. Did you open it up? Might have just been a fuse or some component on the power supply that got fragged. Might be salvageable?

This was 10 years ago. It's dumb, but I give it to someone else. This accident really disgusted me about retro gaming. That wasn't just this, I also bought a PS2 to play Killer 7 and the disc cannot start due to an issue with HD DVD reader (other games like Persona 4 and MSG 2 run fine). At this point I started to understand than retro gaming was a big investment of time, money and also just room for the consoles. As a video game lover, I cannot content myself of having just one console, being able to play only one continent's video games. I am now thinking about jailbreaking my PS3 to transform it into an emulator. It will be free and practical.
Spike Spiegel · 2019-07-14 22:00
>>18073
Yeah. Emulation loses a little bit of the qualia associated with all that old stuff and the hazy memories I have of them, but it's not a bad solution. Of course you can get a hell of a lot nicer emulator than a ps3, but that should do most of it alright.
Get an old crappy CRT too. I think the retro community is all about the Sony Trinitron monitors, often professional monitors, but eeehh those are almost a little too perfect. I like an old, curvy, crappy glass teat. The rounder the better. Bonus points if it creaks and chirps and hisses as it powers up, and makes your hand stand on end 5" away from the screen. CRTs aren't great display devices, but they have a soul or something.

Not OP, but I got a similar message from google at one point. It said something more along the lines of "child abuse is illegal" instead of anything having been forwarded to the authorities however, so they might be referring to something different. I remember being scared to hell for a bit, even though what I searched had nothing to do with CP.
Looked into it, and apparently it was something google were forced to add by some subsidiary of the U.K. government.
I'd imagine certain doujins I'd been reading triggered it, but I didn't think that was too heavily enforced. I also certainly don't try and find that soykaf through google. I just hope I wasn't put on some sort of list because of it.
Really struggling to find anything on it now for whatever reason, but I believe after the U.K. forced them to add it, the big G just implemented it site-wide.

Dropped screwdriver into running system that was open. Made some amazing fireworks before taking mb,cpu, psu to their grave. Was semi success because that gave me justification to upgrade as it was outdated.
