Wmaker + FreeBSD is a nice combo. I was running a similar configuration a few years ago. If I remember right, the dockapp with the moon phases was using too much CPU (I was using a soykafty single core), so I had to remove it. Is that audacious with a custom wmaker skin?

wmmoonclock still uses more CPU than any dockapp and runs single threaded, is sort of insignificant since I am using a 2016 era laptop and yep it is audacious using the OmniAMP 3 skin from x11-themes/audacious-skins, it actually contains a NeXT theme which apparently was used as base for this one, I am regularly switching between them

No, I have compiled and enabled everything on it newest version can even use your freetype fonts but I prefer the classic png ones. It is actually easier to use as I can fully control it with the mouse or the keyboard, the only oddity is that I can only access my local (torified) searx instance from another config, having to change my $HOME as using Tor strictly forbids making connections out of it and cookies are handy for keeping my configs as now torified searx cannot use google search which is a default.
Sorry for downgrading to gif but I had to remove my username which is my real name out of the pic and I like to use grafx2.

Thanks for the tips, once I have time to mess up with my install I will try wmaker again, and I am going to try that audacious theme. I had almost everything working last time, but I still had issues with Japanese IME input and hot plugging a second monitor. For now I am stuck to Gnome as I need these things working for my daily activities, but I am pretty sure I can solve these problems and upgrade to wmaker once I have the time to look into it.
HELIOS · 2019-07-21 19:57

That issues are really simple, setup mozc with ibus for japanese IME and for hotplugging monitors use xRandR or a GUI like ARandR. Works on every window manager.
The x11-themes/audacious-skins port is just a collection of .wsz themes so it can be used on any audacious installation on whatever OS and can be accessed from http://distcache.FreeBSD.org/local-distfiles/ehaupt/audacious-skins-0.4.tar.xz

You guys made me go further into and made me go find a solution for the lack of non-ASCII characters on the audacious font and the small frame on the theme so I got these two solutions: To have a font that actually fits into, so I painfully did sorta extend spleen 5x8, and to edit the theme extending the frame (to 11 px height to fit ttyp0 font).

Nice work. I have no idea how themes work, so, since you are looking into this, do you know if binary fonts are compatible? Do you think it would be possible to use a binary font such as Fixed? I am using that for my terminal for having nice Japanese characters, and those never worked well with audacious.
Yet Another Lainon · 2019-07-23 21:18
>>18230
An audacious Skin is just a bunch of .bmp or .png images and some txtfiles on either a dir, a tarball or a zip.
You set font on ^P preferences menu, it does work with bitmap fonts, pic with fixed and japanese titles. Shared the theme changing everything to color indexed PNGs and without separated frames and thus a blackened stereo sign. To install b64decode theme.txt then cp the tarball to /usr/local/share/audacious/Skins on FreeBSD or /usr/share/audacious/Skins on linux.

Not really, nothing I did was particularly special. My rice takes advantage of multiple workspaces (with workspace names/non-miniature view reflecting AppVM names), the xfce dark style guide, and a lot of playing around with the xfce desktop customization. The wallpaper uses the Qubes blue from the style guide on the wiki to black vertical gradient, with an included Qubes icon centered as the wallpaper. The "Qubes OS 4.0.1" on the bottom left is just a clock item with custom text. My favorite part of my current setup? The empty space on the bottom of the screen is always available to use the scroll wheel to switch desktops. The worst? The xfce-made popup menus below go topmost respective to the horizontal bar if I click on an icon on one, until I click the horizontal bar again.
If you like the setup a lot feel free to try and replicate it.

if you want to try another package system, macports worked pretty well for me. if i recall correctly you could compile xorg and use that as your main X11 server and then compile xfce4, kde, etc and use that. beware that newer upgrades of macOS can cause problems with these programs (ex waiting for the toolchain to be available or not being able to compile i386 binaries).
>>18423
not him but ive started to see macOS as a somewhat 'better' alternative to windows 10 for a just werkz machine since i dont remember there being ads in the home screen or that much privacy problems when being compared to windows 10. also i feel that using macOS can give people a higher chance to be more exposed to using *nix software.
Roy Batty · 2019-08-05 18:02
>>18423
Um, while I love linux, actually I used to run manjaro on a desktop and have been thinking about getting nixos or arch on a new one soon, I've always felt kinda weird running it on a laptop. Plus I need my laptop to work, and osx allows me to mess around with all my linux stuff without constantly getting questions about wtf I'm running and why it's not windows. But for everything I'm *nix all the way.
>>18429
I'll definitely take a look into macports, but in general I'm pretty happy with homebrew especially since I've recently started messing with compiling software. Any reasons why macports specifically? Haven't heard of the xorg thing but may be something I may attempt in the long run. Personally quartz is pretty good but suffers from a lack of customization. Yeah, the new version of mac kinda fuarrrks things over and gets a little of the Win 10 company monitoring thing going. Albeit it can be turned off if you know what your doing.
Lain Iwakura · 2019-08-05 22:22
>>18444
i started to use macports instead of homebrew since macports had more support for the older mac versions. it also had support for either being installed system-wide or user via the source tarball (./configure --some-option i cannot remember) and i forgot if homebrew could do that. on some ports you could be able to add or remove what things you would want to include (ex qemu -x86 +sparc, etc.) and if you were on a work computer and wanted to use xorg and didnt have administrator to install xquartz you could just install xorg via macports. other than that there isnt much i can remember. but whatever works for you, you should use it.
also even though you should be aware of newer macOS versions (ex not being able to obtain the toolchain until a certain time) you should be aware of bugs in older macOS versions. not sure if it was a hoax, but i remember seeing videos of a root bug where it allowed you to do root commands since root was unassigned a password. i mean you could easily fix this by just 'passwd', but there could be other bugs.

>>18818
in the sense of information theory, there are more takeaways upon pondering a "random linux distro" image than there is from a very (conventional) mac user screenshot. There isn't a lot of variance to it except for maybe wallpaper and binary homebrew/non-homebrew user, hence less information content, hence less extractable information to really process thus making it uninteresting! With random distros and esoterics combining WMs like i3 or dwm with toolbars and boxing these different components together for various aesthetics, there is at least much more detail to think (aka stop and make possible interpretations of why) about.
I really don't see the reason for going into a desktop thread other than
- what I mentioned above
- stealing wallpapers
in which case it seems the mac users would do more of a favor just posting their screenshots instead. I don't mean to spill soykaf and though el mad scientist's concern wasn't articulated particularly well, he does have point

Sorry that I came off as a little hostile. It's just a poison in the global GNU/libre software community that these tryhards use GNU because they can seem "edgy" to others or some soykaf (see SZ's ebin hacker interface) and don't give soykaf about their own or others' enslavement. This has created a tragic situation in which most GNU distros to this day are filled with proprietary garbage.

plus I wanted something a bit less system intensive.
I mainly use chrome because it's less hassle and prefer linux because I've become comfortable with it and dislike the direction windows is going, and don't want to shell out for apple.
plus I like the freedom gnu/linux gives me as far as interfaces, control over hardware, and tinkering goes.

Well, it may be experimental, but it's not gigantically bloated pile of bugs that is Qbitorrent, or as I have taken to call it, boost + libtorrent + Qt + spaghetti C++/Qbitorrent.

>What are the advantages of using Arch over more popular distros?
Not an Arch user, but Arch is a rolling release distro, which means you have the newest version of software quickly, whereas on Debian-based distributions, such as Ubuntu or Mint with "stable" release you can wait a few years to use latest versions. Disadvantage of rolling release is your system being less stable, especially if you use a badly designed package manager, such as pacman. On Guix System or NixOS package managers provide transactional updates and rollbacks, making your system bullet proof - you can have both stability and fresh software.
Also better don't use Spotify, because it is malware:
https://stallman.org/spotify.html
Same Telegram - it is a honneypot.
https://spyware.neocities.org/articles/telegram.html
Better try GNU Jami:

What? I can see systemd and Arch logo on those screenshots clearly. Did you port systemd and pacman to *BSD? XD
Also Linux is just a kernel, GNU/Linux is the system. Please read the FAQ:

I've read the GNU manifesto many times before and I am a fan of Stallman's but GNU is not the solution. He is living in the past. BSD is the future, it just takes everyone time to understand that.
You misread my post I am the guy from >>18920
Why would you ever choose to use systemd or pacman lmfao. Systemd is garbage, and pacman is an inferior ports tree.

That's not the GNU Manifesto, but the FAQ section explaining why people should not call the system only Linux, but GNU/Linux.
>He is living in the past. BSD is the future, it just takes everyone time to understand that.
How is that? GNU is developing faster than ever - we even have our own distribution now https://guix.gnu.org/ and there are some new packages addressing old problems, like Jami https://jami.net/
GNU is not dead, new versions of packages get released at least every week https://www.gnu.org/software/recent-releases.html
>Why would you ever choose to use systemd or pacman lmfao.
I know, I was joking. I use Guix package manager and the Shepherd.

BSD is absolutely not the future.
BSD is undoubtedly a well written operating system which is arguably "cleaner" than GNU/Linux has come to be unfortunately (not necessarily better though), however its license is trash and promotes abuse of computer users in the name of freedom.

I have nothing of particular interest on my desktop, but I like it that way.
I don't like tiling WMs, so instead I use the standard XFWM4, but I have no window borders (I move them with Ctrl-Space, resize with Alt-Space).
I also have bindings for pseudo tiles so I can move windows around screen halves/quadrants really fast, I use it very often.

So I switched over to bspwm, because I'm trying to set up a unified desktop between all of my machines, and I want to go without a toolbar. The problem is that I also really, want to know the time. What's the best way to be able to always display the time (or toggle the time) on my desktop without getting a bar? I was thinking of some kind of overlay. Also I will never have my desktop visible. Pic related is my bootup setup right now.

I wish I had a buddy to be with me to guide me to installin Gentoo. It's something I want to do just once just to say I did it. Kind of a "bucket list" sort of thing as silly as it may sound.
Posting on forums and waiting for replies just kind of feels so alienating, I guess.

You can install Gentoo with only the handbook, I did it as a teenager, spended two weekends of trial and error though and sound did never work out, maybe you can wait less because at the time had to wait a whole night building it. What you have to know well is the hardware you have and how partitioning works on a Unix-like system. If you are looking for real challenge try LFS.
If you want to talk here is a tox id 14D6F028655D8AAE6D734BD99C15543F606B8670623E76D279F90BFBB8AA0037E8E708E73DE5

Just read the handbook and look at the Arch wiki when it's not enough, user.
The only advices I can give are to switch from ld->bfd to ld->gold early, use git instead of rsync for portage and use eselect-repository instead of layman
Also, read the Gentoo wiki entries for Xorg, Radeon/Intelaviv and Alsa before building your first kernel or you'll have to do it countless times.
Some other tricks:
* Set LLVM_TARGETS in your make.conf to avoid building useless stuff
* Make use of PORTAGE_NICENESS and PORTAGE_IONICE_COMMAND to build in background
* MAKEOPTS="-j16 -l16", FEATURES="parallel-fetch parallel-install" and EMERGE_DEFAULT_OPTS="--tree --unordered-display --jobs=16 --load-average=16" to make use of your coarz (replace 16 by your $(nproc), of course)
* Install zram-init very fast, you'll need that RAM boost

I respect the boldness of people who post windows here, but yeah it's a bad system in more ways than most people imagine. Maybe have a separate boot partition just for gaming or whatever other software you just have to have running natively on windows, but yeah consider using something else for daily driving.

They'll eventually learn. It took me a decade to go from using only windows, to trying Ubuntu, to going back to windows due to the gaming addiction, to finally going BSD full time. It may take a day, or a week, or even a decade but the longer he posts here, and wants to gain knowledge, he will eventually find the path.

I'm using an extension called Midnight Lizard which modifies the colors in every site (customizable clolors, you can also add some site exceptions), I think it works in pretty much any browser (iirc it worked for me on Firefox, Chromium, IceCat and Brave). It consumes some important resources, though.

I did not plan to answer to that if it was not asked twice so next comes my answer and a pic that in that case comes before.
You can essentially emulate almost any other platform with the power of higan, MAME and mednafen, as a funny fact FreeBSD has primary support for higan with linux having second. Games that I do not have access to are those of PS2 and those who do not run with wine, so I could waste all my life trying to complete those games remaining and die first, I also spend several time on romhacking.net so that would be a hundred lives more so.
