A 3D anonymous imageboard
Meddler · 2019-06-15 20:40
Hi Lainchan.
I am working on a 3D anonymous imageboard, running in the web browser. The base concept is to use the 3d space and the video game logic as a layer of abstraction for the forum. But the long term idea, is far more ambitious (and crazy): using augmented reality to post files in the real word (It’s a very long term idea!).
Some people on 8ch advised me to post on Lainchan, due to the proximity of the concept with the Phantoma videogame.
Here is the chan: http://snuffchan.com/dungeon/
Opinion are welcome, and pardon my English, I am french.
Also Lainchan looks neat. There’s lot of cool topics like IA or just philosophical one I looking forward to read and may be contribute.

prob one of the coolest ideas i've seen, just try to keep the community alive for the long term idea. i hope this grows. I assume you will give each board their own space and/or make them bigger in the future?
Neuromancer · 2019-06-15 21:25
Holy soykaf this is amazing.
How did you build this?
Cypher · 2019-06-15 21:50

Thanks for you reply.
Not sure than keeping alive a community will be my strength, but I will try, one of my being problem is than I am passionate about very small niche stuff like horror movies and gagged girls (Yeah it’s sound silly). If anyone has advice on the topic, that would be great.
An idea would be to allow people to publish their own board using webtorrent (a peer to peer javascript library running in the browser), so the people would bring their communities. But this method would add a layer of complexity on the project and it would be a mess to maintain (and it’s already a mess).
But maybe NPC and enigma I am planning to add will bring the community together...
Concerning the size, the last version had bigger space, but I made a roll back due to performances issues. Don’t forget than you’re playing 3D in a web browser and the current version, even if it’s looks small, has more than 200, maybe 300 images-slots.
Nguoi La · 2019-06-15 22:07
I don't remember what it's called but the camera movement effect that makes the camera keep moving after I stop my cursor, I don't like it. I want the movement to stop when I stop my mouse. It makes it hard to look around. Same with movement I don't like sliding around like the ground is ice.
Also how about making a room for each thread?

I used BabylonJS, an incredible javascript library and it was not so hard to code.
I started the first prototype with Unity 3D (picture related), but the webgl export was just hell, firing random error and blocking the whole game for no reason, and result wasn’t working on Ubuntu or mobile. I will maybe go back to Unity 3D if want to make a virtual reality or augmented reality version to earn money on it.
Turner · 2019-06-15 22:57
Interesting concept but its pretty buggy and some of the boards are distasteful and only catering to the creator's fetishes. Kinda strange there is a no porn rule but there is a hentai board...

Wow so it's just another worthless webpage that no one will use. Why don't you promote it on facebook? the audience there will be more than happy to roleplay with you as a hacker for 5 minutes till they get bored.

About censorship, hate speech and porn
It’s a complex question. Better than a long answer I will publish the last cover of Charlie Hebdo. Just to say than there are some blurred line between PORN and adult content in my country. Hentai have some artistic qualities, I personally consider them as a piece of art and not as porn. Another example: guro Hentai, porn or art? You can’t tell.
For hate speech, my first version of the disclaimer was “Non-ironic hate-speech”. The muhamad caricature made by Charlie Hebdo can be considered as hate-speech. Another example: If I post some My Little Pony neo nazi board screen capture (that fuarrrking exist), you obviously know that’s a joke. But it can be considered hate speech.
You have also a great example about how censorship can be incredibly subjective with gagged girls and bondage! Did you ever heard about Bettie Page and Irving Claw? They were running a soft bondage magazine send by mail in the 50’s. Their business was destroyed by the FBI, and for no reason clear, because most of the scenes they were despicting were already existing in books, or hollywood movies. State censorship IS something subjective. Now imagine corporate censorship.
>>17713
I strongly thinking about making the whole thing Peer to peer to escape to the censorship, like I mentioned it in a previous post, using webtorrent.
>>17724
By the way, I am sorry for stuff offensive stuff posted on the board I wasn’t awake at the time, I deleted them. I got a word filter in my code, I will add a few forbidden words to it.
-------------------
Now from the technical point of view.
>>17717
I have a lot of instabilities, that’s why the board wasn’t active a few hours ago. I am thinking about deleting the player chat + the ability to see other players. It brings very little to the game and it cost a lot in terms of maintenance.
I suck at building community, and to be honest I don’t really know what to put in the kind of boards other than alpha and lulz. Tell me if you got ideas about it, I will suppress most of the old boards. The only one I was hyped about by was the horror board (I am a big horror movie lover), but someone posted some real gore picture and even if I deleted them I don’t want the board anymore.
I think maybe what I am doing isn’t a community, but a tool. The whole thing use zero database, it’s just a bunch of JSON files + PHP. One of my numerous goals was to create a CMS where you just drag and drop it on your server and it’s work. And now with the peer to peer technology running in the browser, it’s opening the way to some crazy perspective to fight big cloud platform, no or very few file hosting from the server side. Imagine a mass adoption of this techno, and the Internet won’t be the same for the next decade.
Maybe I should trash 75% of my dev and keep the rest to make a fully decentralized network. What is your view on this, Lainchan.
Crazy Jake · 2019-06-16 12:52
Cool idea, but the ban on copyrighted content and "hate speech" kills any interest I might have in it as a community.
Sipho Nkosi · 2019-06-16 13:11
It just looks like a Source game. You have avatars and sprays and a chat in the corner. Is there more to it than the screenshots show?
Either way, it doesn't seem like an "imageboard".
>One of my numerous goals was to create a CMS where you just drag and drop it on your server and it’s work. sounds very interesting, however it has already been done and failed. Long before even Second life, in the very late 90s or early 2000s, there was something called chatcity or chatville or wtf it was called. which did just that, plus real time communication, as the name implied.
In the end what the users care about is having concentrated information as quickly as possible. 2D text is idea for that.
Eldon Tyrell · 2019-06-16 14:16
Very cool project. I love the idea and I think it has potential as a browser game or a VR application.
Here are some things that are on my mind right now:
1. The controls are a bit awkward. I'm pretty sure someone could find a more convenient way to interact with posts.
2. Add more sandbox game elements. something that allows users and board admins to build a little space according to their own aesthetics.
3. Maybe custom avatars. I'm not sure how that fits with the idea of an anonymous imageboard but traditional imageboards have flags and tripcodes, so.
4. Having all the images stored elsewhere is a bit cumbersome. I think it would be better if you could just upload them to your server or a decentralized/distributed data storage.
5. Add some secrets like hidden rooms/boards and other features that makes the player want to explore the world.
John Rain · 2019-06-16 14:47
>3d
>running in a web browser
I think you should really stick with AR / unity rather than run it in a web browser.
The WWW is so bloated and libraries / frameworks are changing every few years.
AR stuff has URI's so you could just put a link to the AR space on the webpage and have your users tunnel through.
I would recommend trying to make what you're doing compatible with VR chat or anything else that you can so it doesn't fall into disuse.
Kudos to you for trying to make something, but continue planning your build so you do not burn out.

In regards to porn (specifically the "gagged girls" board) I don't mind that it is porn. I mind that you, the author, put a board on there that is catering only to your specific and niche fetish. If you are trying to build a community it seems almost creepy as its obvious the board was made to find more porn for you.
Otto Normalverbraucher · 2019-06-16 20:50
Nice concept but not my cup of tea to be honest. I come to places like this for the text, not for the images or any kind of interactivity so it doesn't do anything for me

The game is offline for moderation. I got around 800 posts last night, and being currently alone with a custom CMS make the task a bit complicated. I will temporarily allow only 20 post every 12h. it's the quantity of posts I'm able to moderate right now with my everyday life.

OP here.
Some news. The chan is up again.
Due to my personal life and new laws planned for july in France that will definitely trash free speech it’s very probable than I will shutdown the board in the next few weeks. It’s not advertised on the international press, but they (the french gov) are trying to push a system where they will be able to jail people for 2 years of prison for caricature if there are suspicions of antisemitism (an israeli flag is enough), sexism or homophobia. We have clearly a huge problem of antisemitism in France, but it has absolutely zero correlation with free speech. More info for french speakers here: https://francais.rt.com/france/63094-reforme-loi-1881-menace-liberte-expression-selon-secretaire-generale-snj
I also have a problem with the project size. Moderation + game developpement + server side is really over-helmeting. I will go back to a more simple imageboard project (no more 3D display) using peer to peer tech. It’ will be far more simple for me to develop as an open source software. I am also curious about what you would recommend me as a server side language.
I will publish the source of the 3D board on a Github next month.
The code is probably a bit messy, with tons of unused features, but it works, you just have to drag and drop it on a PHP server.

Hi, friends, thanks a lot for your support.
For personal reasons, I am pausing my 3D Anonymous Imageboard project. It’s too much moderation and maintenance for a lone person and I will not be able to provide this amount of work during the following year. Lot of people were hyped by the project, so I published full the sources on Github: https://github.com/AlexKrunch/AnonIB-3D
It’s a pause, I will comeback with a new project (I think, in 1 year), with a minimal server side part + and the files being torrented to escape censorship.
>>17902
I disabled the file uploads + drawings for security reasons on the current online board.
>>17877
Yeah it’s creepy. And exhausting when you’re the admin and than you see a dozen of anon sprites in the alpha entrance when you go to sleep the sunday evening. I will not continue the other player display feature because that’s a superficial one, cause lag on certain computers and it multiplies the code on the server side. But I am planning to add NPC.
>>17878
Seriously, I don’t know what I am risking something, the main target being FB and twitter, but there’s a kind of tabula rasa of the right of press and computer science in France and globally in Europe, the goal being openly to pronounce true prison sentences for caricatures and tweets. It’s also complexify the way you launch a social platform in France because we got a lot of laws about computer science, about user data and copyrights. That’s why the next part of my project (next year) will be about torrenting content in the browser.
>>17885
Like I’ve said here and on my TOS, I am for adult content, not ugly porn. I want the people to be able to share Electric Retard comics and stupid Alex Jones .GIF
>>17899
I am mostly stopping the project because my work and my personal situation doesn't allow me to moderate the site properly. Also moderation is exhausting. With my imageboard being in english + the video game working as a layer of abstraction, I am not sure if I am really risking something.

Hi folk. OP here.
I relaunched a working version, on https://3dchan.net
I chatted a bit with Hotwheels on Twitter and he convinced me to change the name of the project.
I am still rethinking the map/level mechanism for the project for the next iteration.
Everyone should be able to create his own map, it’s a must have.
I'm thinking about going back to the Unity game engine, rather than BabylonJS. I know I am a visual person and the time lost to just having an ok 3d render could have a long term impact on the project. Unity will definitely ease the production of polished visuals and won't prevent the drawing or file upload features. Of course, it won't run on all web browsers and, unlike the current version, it would be a mostly desktop game. That's a tough choice.

Your concept is soykaf, by the way. The reason why old forums, imageboards and social media are popular is because their goal is to share information and they do it in the fastest, most exhaustive way possible. Your third-rate JanusVR can give some interesting screenshots for fourth-rate vaporwave artists but the overall tediousness of this project will kill it before it's even finished. The AR thingie is even more hilarious: you could just leave floppy disks on the ground for the same effect.

The 404 display errors are most of the time due to Cross Domain Request errors. To make it short, because the picture and the 3Dchan view are not hosted under the same domain there's a security error.

I like your idea and I hope you will finish your project soon. I do have some critique, though.
1. It was not immediately clear to me that I could look around by dragging the left mouse button. Instead, I was trying all all keyboard options to turn to the right of left. Only after a few minutes of trying, I found out that I had to drag the mouse while having the left mouse key button pressed.
2. I think that opposing "hatespeech" is not clear enough. Hate speech is an extremely subjective concept, since everyone has a different on opinion on what is hate speech and what is not.
Some people even consider it hate speech if you don't want illegal immigrants to flood your country, while others think it's hate speech if you start wishing death upon someone.
Replace "hate speech" with something that is more clear, for example: "Don't make death threats and don't death upon others!"
3. Perhaps this feature is still missing, but as of now, I don't know how to enter a room. If this feature is still missing, then it's fine. If it is possible to enter a room, then you should explain to the user how to do so.

I also need to move from my custom PHP server side to Drupal.
>>18467
These are valid arguments, but I think than the 3D space and video game provide a layer that can improve the imageboard (I insist on the term, I am more about Danbooru than 4chan) experience. Also, I feel than the pictures are enhanced by the 3D space.
>>18809
1. Yes, I should implement keyboard options to turn. The problem is than the base controls are provided by the BabylonJS framework (powerful and very cool framework by the way), but overriding control is a bit complicated. Having a familly life + a full time job it's hard to find time for the project, and most of this time goes to content moderation + server side issues. So it will be for a next, 2020, version.
2. I am 100% ok with you, unfortunately I not on US soil, and I cannot afford to put money in some potential trial. My current solution is only about exposing the source code for people wanting to create a more permissive space.
3. It’s need a tutorial. But I will make the same reply than for the first point.

It will be a software running ElectronJS with probably a light browser version. Every player will be able to create and post on their own maps, create their NPC with their own sprite sheets and share them in torrent on the 3DChan’s boards. This is my vision for the future. It's hard to have rich browser interaction with Unity, mainly due to the Unity player behaving like a black box, and I am not sure it will change. I talked about it to the creator of the very similar project 3dforreddit.com and he come to the exact same conclusion eventualy using BabylonJS like me. The only point to use Unity is about graphic quality + FOV that takes too much CPU in BabylonJS.

Talking of boards, I am sorry Anon, I cannot create a board each time few people ask me for. Most of the time they use it during 2/3 days and doesn't post anymore after. Hi there.
I am currently working on an offline software version of 3DChan , where people will be able to make their own map. If concentrate only on the front code, I will (probably) have more time to work on graphism and game design. The software will be shipped with a system to share files & map with your friends. Planned for late 2020.
Screen captures are the current state of the new editor. I don't want anymore blocks and right angles.
>>21054
An huge maze sound incredibly cool, but the reality is that it will be incredibly empty. And most of posts will be located near the start point. I need more in game contents for this. Also I more thinking about an open map for this, like RDR or Death Stranding.
Turner · 2019-11-19 16:28
>>21863
A real 3d chan should be something like this, except that everybody should have the same sprite (or maybe just random sprites which you wouldn't chose, though that would be basically tripfagging) and with the addition of being able to show temporary images above you, similar to our reaction pics, or displaying them on the map like objects for others to see for a longer period of time, all that in addition to regular text for chatting of course.
Also, it would be cool if there was a hub through which you could access all boards, like the warp room in Crash but bigger, would be like the /random/ of the site.
It would be like a fuarrrking online agora.
Jens Hansen · 2019-11-19 16:43
>>22281
Or maybe this, every board would be one of those warp rooms, and every portal of that room would lead you to a thread, a thread is a room, when nobody is on the room anymore the thread/room would be deleted, this way the warp room would be dynamically changing. Also, every board should have his own unique sprite for all his users, for example a board where all his users are shown as pepes or lains.
Some details I think would be cool: *you can specify the topic of your thread and even the type of room (a bar, a park, a living room, a museum, etc.), but OP has no control of what users do in his thread, only moderators can kick off people from rooms.
*When you are in a thread, you can go back to the central hub/portal room whenever you want.
What do you think anons?
HELIOS · 2019-11-20 10:50
My view on >>22282
1) Main hub with each room link to it being a thread is what a 3D imageboard should be. Also each OP should be able to manage the architecture of the room. The big problem is how preview the posts and images changes from the thread in the main hub.
2) On the whole chat idea, the idea is nice but it would exaggeratedly limits conversation between players, because you have already a space abstraction layer (you need to be at a certain place to read a message), and you would add a time abstraction layer (you need to be at a certain and limited time to read a message)

It's because of this mindset that people are scared of doing anything vaguely creative and we're knee deep into creative bankruptcy. People today spend more time trying to deconstruct or criticize what they see than actually enjoying it for what it is - unless it's advertised to them nicely, then oh they sure do love the novelty.

You're doing some cool work OP. For sure, switch to Unity if you want to be able to convert it to a VR version. Running these types of applications on a website with JS isn't since many people disable JS off the bat.
If you still want to keep the site, maybe make a lighter build for the site and keep full functionality for the Unity version. Also, are you using any sort of database?
On a side note, your project is giving me a worlds.com vibe to it. Surprisingly, worlds is still running at the time of this post.

I am back on the project V2 coding. This version will focus on map edition and NPC creation. I trashed the non-perpendicular architecture idea for a more simple block/tile architecture. The first one would have been far too complicated for users and would have made the whole coding much harder.

How can the Charlie Hebdo Mohammed caricature be considered hate speech? Criticism of religion from a satirical lens (or any lens, arguably) is not hate speech. If they said something like "I hate sandniggers" and did so without a shred of irony it might be hate speech, but the problem with punishing or even categorizing hate speech is that the laws required to do this are often overly broad and lead to innocent people with senses of humor and/or autism getting their lives ruined. All it takes is for someone to get offended - and people are becoming increasingly less resilient so the threshold for what is considered offensive drops with every passing day. Eventually, you won't be able to say anything interesting at all - and in many cases this has already happened. Any community (or website, software company, etc) that considers itself civilized should not have these "hate speech" rules, because they are antithetical to the concept of freedom in a just society. An imageboard should not have these rules because it is against chan culture, and quite frankly such an idea is retarded. Which is unfortunate, because the concept of a 3d imageboard is intriguing.

>How can the Charlie Hebdo Mohammed caricature be considered hate speech?
Because it fosters hate, duh?! See, after those caricatures were published, a bunch of hateful people barged in and slaughtered a bunch of cartoonists. If those caricatures didn't get published, none of this would have happened.
Yamaoto Toshi · 2020-02-07 17:58
Surely you are joking. How are non-violent cartoonists responsible for a bunch of religious zealots choosing to shoot up a publishing house? Responsibilty lies with those who committed the acts of violent aggression, not with some peaceful artists with a penchant for soykaf-disturbing.

J.C. Denton · 2020-02-07 18:27

The cartoonists who were slaughtered were the ones at Charlie Hebdo who made the insulting strips against Mohammed. The worst thing was the reaction of people who commented on the event. Nobody wanted to fully absolve the cartoonists for their joke. This included public figures around the world who at best, said "It's awful that is happened, but they deserved it". All speakers argued, first and foremost, that the caricatures were wrong and hateful and all the murderers were guilty of avenging themselves with excessive force. The legitimacy of satire was never defended.
What happened with CH was a stress test for free speech, which is literally what satire is designed for.
>Ladies and gentlemen, the title I’ve selected for this little chat is “contra jogulatores obloquentes”, which you all recognize as Latin, mediaeval Latin to be precise. It’s the title of a law issued in Sicily in 1221 by Emperor Frederick II of Swabia, an emperor “anointed by God”, who we were taught in school to regard a sovereign of extraordinary enlightenment, a liberal. “Jogulatores obloquentes” means “jesters who defame and insult”. The law in question allowed any and all citizens to insult jesters, to beat them and even – if they were in that mood – to kill them, without running any risk of being brought to trial and condemned.

Use your words.
People like imageboards mainly because of their element of freedom of expression that they carried over from the early Internet days.
His soykaf is pointless with secondlife and secondlife was pointless with worlds.com to begin with.
Hate speech isn't even real. That's the thing that lets someone know if they're walking into "1984" "Demolition Man" territory, of which imageboards from their conception have never been that sort of thing. When they get too much traffic THEN they become that, due to advertisers demanding a faux smile from everyone to increase profits. The OP is corrupt at the start.
Sabo Engle · 2020-03-07 09:54
Hi friends,
The site didn’t get v& , I just stopped paying the snuffchan.com hosting service, that was an old imageboard project. My current project is hosted under 3dchan.net . If someone is interested by the snuffchan’s domain name, I own it till the 30th of March 2020.
I’ve made some technical tests with another dev for “decentralizing” a big part of the game. Believe me or not, I want to keep censorship under the bare minimum, unfortunately, I live and host my server in Europe and I am not protected under any kind of first amendment. To those that think that 3Dchan rules are only here to attract advertisers, they are wrong : advertisement and affiliation on Internet are a terrible revenue source, even for a mainstream/ family friendly web site. Having investors on the board is also a terrible idea, because it will limit a lot of my libertarian goals, which are sinceres. Making a premium desktop version, paying interaction with NPC or even a Patreon are far more coherent ways to monetise 3Dchan.net in the future.
I’ve made progress in 3Dchan V2 (pic related), but I think I will have to make a backlog and to lower my goals if I want to ship something for 2020. I am also asking myself if I should not focus on a desktop exclusive game for the next version.
Thanks for your interest.

>If you really cared about privacy and libertarian stuff, you'd host the stuff on i2p and Tor right from the start.
I've thinking about it, but:
-HTML5 canvas are not recommended over TOR, because they can leak your IP. And with real time player communication using websocket, I am pretty sure IP can be exposed. (https://tor.stackexchange.com/questions/4285/can-html5-canvas-image-data-reveal-the-users-ip)
-Even 8chan didn't authorize their users to post over TOR, because we all know what will be posted.
-TOR host tons of virus, scams and terrible stuffs. I want 3Dchan users to be safe.
-Most of libertarian stuff can be done on the Clear Net, like 3D gun printing's Ctrl PEW having an internet web site and an instagram account. Also drug dealers have now their own Snapchat and Instagram account. It doesn't mean they won't be shut down in the future, but right now, these stuff exist on the western clear net.
Also don't forget than I censor very few stuff (90% of the post I censor are just nazi flags with nothing funny added to it) and than my disclaimer is mostly here for a legal purpose.
HELIOS · 2020-03-27 15:49

IIRC Alex Krunch is a citizen of France and therefore subject to anti-nazi propaganda laws. I don't know the exact details of their laws but we have something similar in germany where it doesn't help to move your server overseas; you'll be still obliged to delete any pro-nazi/non-ironic nazi symbolism. I agree that it's a severe restriction of freedom of speech but sadly there's not much you can do about it other than risking going to prison.

why do we need to censor? just only allow it in one board.
you start "censoring" one thing, then people post something else you dislike, then you start censoring that, then people start complaining about another thing and you censor that, then it's no different than the other thousands of unfederated social networks outthere.

So I've been playing around in 3dchan and I got a few reservations about accessibility and flow of information.
Pictures on the wall are just posts - not topic starters. Replying to posts is done by clicking the reply button, finding a blank wall, and hitting either the reply or draw button on the bottom center. You look at a post and a little line shoots out to the post it's replying to. That bottom center also lets you interact with doors.
But what if you want a legitimate discussion with a sense of continuity? Even a small thread with 10 or 20 replies could take 10 or 20 minutes to read as the user navigates one post to the next, and since there's no directional relation between posts you'll have to navigate to an end without knowing in what order you're moving.
The "traditional" view offered alleviates this problem, but you can't post in that view without finding a new empty cell to post on.
How about instead having each block be the thread starting post, like a 3d catalog? Clicking a post would bring up a conventional view of the thread with a more common method of replying. All in a door-less 3d room where all topics can be taken in with a quick glance around the room. Or if you wanted to get fancy, the thread is a 3d pillar that rises or falls as you navigate the thread. Hitting reply would cause a block to jut out the side with a normal POST form. This seems like a good balance of the 3d environment and discussion without taking too many compromises on either side.
I guess I'll wait to see what happens in the next installment of 3dchan. I like the potential I see.

A minecrafty way to implement threads would be to have a physical room for every OP. You open a door or go down a ladder, and you have a room with all the posts in it. It would be hard to keep the conversation orderly in a non-linear fashion, though.
Small rooms with one post each would work great for a spooky themed board, like a long corridor with just a door and one post in every room. It could be an image on one wall and the message written on the other in a scratchy font.
