Hello I am looking into buying a some decent Navis for various uses.I have one for general use on the web ( a maxed out X60). I’m interested in one I can use outside of home that can do more than that so maybe a T530 for simple video editing or more intensive graphical tasks. An X230 specifically for a secure system where I can use Heads+Qubes in the future to better meet it’s system requirements. Finally one that can do above average work compiling software, playing games, more video editing and use as a home server; a non-mobile workstation preferably one that has some degree of respects for my freedumbs like a Coreboot or Heads system. I haven’t looked too long at the Libreboot workstations since Minifree/Leah refused to pay for contracted work on libreboot for these systems and if using Libreboot is an ethical choice I want to hold it to higher ethical standards…. I currently have two t400’s but I understand they often do not have much computing power even with upgrades. I haven’t tried to use an eGPU since I can’t find any useful information on the net regarding whether there are any that work with free software or not or if it’s even compatible with a libreboot system. I'm not even sure where to begin with eGPUs.I’ll probably sell one of these t400 to help with the costs of buying new tech. If anyone can recommend a good workstation or better mobile system than the T530 I’m all ears. >also inb4 “move to /tpg/” → this is for non-thinkpad systems as well

If you have the funds, you could get a Talos II blackbird micro ATX board with a quad-core CPU and build a decent workstation from that.

>>17633 Thank you for your reply.Unfortunately it is somewhat out of reach for me.I've looked at a few boards here: https://coreboot.org/status/board-status.html and I've seen quite a few that are cheap and have decent support I'm just not sure about graphics since I've never put a graphics card in a workstation before. If there are any resources where I could read about video cards and their firmware from a foss perspective that'd be nice. Also I'm not even sure how graphics cards work like are they similar to a CPU where only certain models will work on a board or not? Pls help I'm dumb.

>>17635 As far as graphics are concerned, you might try the old 1GB Nvidia card sold by Thinkpenguin if you want it to just work with free software

>>17636 I see a lot of people recommending this card.Is there something special about it? I thought that all graphics cards have non-free firmware. What's special about this one? I might buy it anyways but if it's no different I might look for something more powerful.

Desktop GPUs are relatively universal, the only thing you should worry about is size and power draw.
