Dear Mozilla, fuck you

"Gee, it sure is a good thing that I'm not using Windows and Edge and/or Chromium, and am instead using Linux and Firefox so that I can be sure that vendor forced-update bullshit can't interrupt lengthy uninterruptible processes. Hmm, my 2GB batch upload to Flickr on my slow 3mpbs-upload-speed connection is nearly done, I think I'll open a private tab and kill time on random sites while I wait for the last 10-minutes-or-so of the upload to finish."
>pic related
>switch back to regular window with ongoing batch upload
>flickr upload has stalled out
Godjammit, Mozilla. Godjammit.

Download icecat disable the fsf add ons and add yours.
They have made it very clear what their priorities are and personally i cant bother anymore with a browser that every once in a while breaks/finds something to make my life miserable.Or fiddling with 10000 settings in about:config that reset and change in every update.

I have never seen firefox update itself on linux. All the updates come through my package manager. What distro are you using?

He probably downloaded the files from the firefox site, instead of using a PM

I have to use Fedora at work and firefox autoupdates itself outside dnf unless you explicitly go into about:config and turn it off. Might just be something IT enabled on the corporate Fedora images. I would check for yourself though and don't assume Mozilla respects anything even Linux anymore.

it shouldn't be able to update itself on linux even if it wanted to
(unless you're using the root account)

How does sudo work then?

It could be dropping updated files in ~/.mozilla, or anywhere else in ~/. Never seen this behavior myself, so I don't know where Firefox would install updates.

man sudo

Plain Xubuntu 19.04, with Firefox installed via ordinary apt-get.

Firefox does that when you update it through apt. I guess next time don't update your browser while doing a batch upload ?
Nell · 2019-05-29 12:49
auto-update or repo, its still a bad design

"Bad design" is the watchword of Mozilla these days. They may have fixed performance issues, but the interface is totally schizophrenic. It's neither a clean friendly design suitable for the hoi polloi, nor is it a power-user tool suitable for people who want to extend and privacy-harden it. And the config UI shows it.
Firefox is to browsers what Windows 10 is to operating systems. There's some neat stuff under the hood, and performance issues are largely a solved problem, but it's so jam packed with privacy-killing telemetry, so unreliable due to flakey update issues, and so saddled with an insane hybrid UI that both are really only used by people who really want the legacy third-party ecosystem (extensions and applications, respectively) built around them.

I had this thing pop up on ubuntu, I think it's about addons updating, not the ff per se, not sure though. But yeah I'm thinking of using Icecat weasel etc. if the latter if the case

Lains, can explain benefits and some settings to use Icecat instead of FF? Its possible to install uMatrix?
I dont use JS very much, only at some specific sites like banking and stuff. Also, why the «Content blocking» feature says that only block trackers on private windows, but its working in a normal session.

icecat is endorsed by the FSF
you can add firefox add ons to icecat but not all work due to not having an extension ID in their manifest json
can be fixed if you can spare some time
most work however

I have automatic add on updating turned off. And I didn't update the system in a while and it still pops up. It's obvious they update some files under ~/.mozilla. That's how they solved the ssl certificate problem a couple of weeks ago. fuarrrk mozilla

yeah i noticed that too
the update that fixed the certificates was via the system but after that the browser updates itself
i dont know how and the add on updating is off
