NewPipe - Frontend app for YouTube
Would be happy to hear yours.

Clover works for lainchan? (I don't have a phone) Does it work for all vichan/tinyboard type boards?
Nameless · 2019-05-06 19:16

it currently only works on these three sites.

Maps.
Maps is a maps app that is fully libre software. It works amazingly and lets you add your own places to maps and track your own movements. And it's entirely offline. It downloads maps data of your local area from OpenStreetMap and stores it locally on the phone. I don't have a data plan and I have been many places without cell signal, and Maps is always there to help me. I love Maps.

miniVector - Matrix client based on Riot
Silence - Encrypted SMS
Tor Browser - Needs no introduction, enable the Guardian Repo in F-Droid settings to get it

GNU Icecat (or, as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU+Icecat) - Libre FIrefox fork. Turn off the bundled addons unless you really think you'll use them.
Vinyl Music Player - Fork of Phonograph. Has all the premium features unlocked. The best music player, in my opinion.
Netguard - Adguard + Adaway at the same, but without root. However, it's not quite as good as them and it won't allow you to use a VPN at the same time if I recall.
Aegis - A 2FA client that I think is the best at the moment.
Orgzly - Emacs org-mode note-taking
ObscuraCam - Camera app designed with privacy in mind
Termux - Bash terminal
T-UI Launcher - Terminal style launcher, very customizable
ZimLX - Fork of Lawnchair, without the bullsoykaf
Case · 2019-05-07 23:30
Aard2 - for offline wikipedia. Files are smaller than kiwik databases but have no images
Ankidroid - for spaced repition flashcards
Antennapod - podcast aggregator
Diskusage - visualize diskusage
Openkeychain - manage gpg keys
Osmand - offline map app
Overchan - more boards than clover
Passwordstore - password manager with gpg, git and ssh
Quickdic - multiple language dictionary
Syncthing - cloudless file synchronization
Tuner - if you're playing a string instrument
Yet Another Lainon · 2019-05-08 01:39
AnySoftKeyboard - best looking and more featureful (I disable almost everything but gestures) keyboard
Binary Eye - The barcode and 2D code reader that actually does what it intends to
Deja vu - Best offline location provider (NLP)
DictionaryForMIDs - because it has the Webster dictionary and is also the lightest dictionary app out there
Equate - I have tried other unit conversors this is the one I like most
Ghost Commander - dual panel file manager (not-so-fun-story; I del'd my whole data partition once by legendary mistapping)
Libre Torrent - Lighter than "Torrent Client", it also lets you do sequential downloads and has a nice UI
Mupen64plus AE - N64 emulator, it has the awesome GlideN64 video plugin that supports widescreen hacks, 3 point filtering and texture upscaling filters
opsu! - Musical pocket weebry
primitive ftpd - ftpd daemon
Scrambled Exif - metadata remover
Space Trader - fun game
The Light - best Bible app
Trebleshot - Wifi file sharing app with the ability to create hotspots that can also do share via plain http
About PDF viewers I have a personnal debate between MuPDF viewer and KOReader, koreader is mupdf in the core, modified for use with ebook readers and provides alot of features and an unusual UI for an smartphone so I use koreader for reading books and mupdf viewer for quick checking pdf files or to make zoom.
Outside of the F-Droid default repo I recommend Retroarch if you are into emulation and Bromite webview as a replacement for regular webview.
And by last, mpv-android has recently recieved an update which includes AArch64 support being now viable as media player (for me).

Not directly related to this thread, but since this is the only android thread I will ask. Does anyone know of a rootless systemwide adblock method that will work if I already am connected to a VPN (via openVPN)? I know about dns66 and blokada, but those will not work in my case since I would need to disconnect from my actual vpn to use those.
Of course I could always root and use adaway, but I do not think just this one function justifies the security risk associated with allowing root access.
Tyrell Wellick · 2019-05-31 23:29

Use an actual adblocking DNS, (which I personally would'nt trust) or modify your /system/etc/hosts file using custom recovery

Yeah, I'm assuming it has something to do with older versions of Android. I'm using Android 4.4.4 and it doesn't work.

StreetComplete pops up all the stuff around me with incomplete information and makes it real easy to contribute, with less of a focus on navigation and all the crazy tweaks you can do with OsmAnd~. It's just an easy way to see what places need more info and submit it back. Futzing around in OsmAnd~ I didn't see similar functionality.

Orbot app does suck since the focus was given to Tor Browser on android whch is also soykaf but at least kinda works. Are there alternatives to the insufferable orbot app?, there is a tor pkg on termux, is it possible to make it work with all the enviroment?.

>K-9 mail - For reading mail
Let me know when the various years-old "syncing disabled" bugs are fixed. I've just given up on K-9 and started using Simple Email (also on F-droid) instead. Not nearly as many features, but at least it syncs reliably.

Tried turning off battery optimization for it? (If on Pie, not sure about Oreo)

>Tried turning off battery optimization for it? (If on Pie, not sure about Oreo)
Multiple Nougat and Oreo devices, same issue with or without battery optimizations on all of them. I've fiddled with so many settings suggested to me on various forums. I've done full-scale factory resets. It happens on both stock ROMs and LineageOS. I simply cannot get K-9 to reliably sync.
And I'm no tech newbie. I hate it when people trot out unrelated tech experience as if it proves their capabilities in another situation, but I'll be that guy right now. I've built LFS for fun, multiple times. I can do careful, methodical troubleshooting that requires lots of reading and lots of patience. I'd actually planned out my troubleshooting for this issue on a spreadsheet that lists every combination of various settings (including developer settings).
But Simple Email? It just plain works. I never miss an email, regardless of battery optimization settings. For me, that reliability outweighs the extra features of K-9.

From a security, privacy, and anonymity perspective, the two most indispensible apps on F-Droid are Afwall+ firewall and Orbot Tor proxy/VPN, in my opinion.
[Pic unrelated: Cellphone geiger counter and tritium glow-lights for entropy generation.]
Vasya Pupkin · 2019-07-22 08:10
Muzei with pixiv or danbooru plugin, whitout NSFW filters and maybe tags of some dark soykaf. Best way to stop loosing your time on the phone as you would probably not dare to use it in public 110% prooved to work.

Most reliable way to customize DNS on Android is OverrideDNS app on Play Store. Needs root. Doesn't _seem_ to be boobytrapped or backdoored.

So this means you can run spyware cancer apps inside an isolated profile so they cannot access your data outside the profile? Nice.
