Experiences with Ubuntu studio?

Hello lainons! I'm a DIY musician who has been using a Macbook Pro and Garageband to record music for many years now. However, I have become pretty unhappy with the current state of MacOS and don't see myself buying any new Apple hardware in the future. I recently discovered Ubuntu Studio so I've been considering wiping my installation of MacOS Sierra on my 2012 A1278 MacBook Pro in favor of installing it. Does this seem like a good idea? All I really do in my music is record my guitar, record my singing, use a drum machine, and use some synthesizers occasionally so I figured it could get the job done. Does anyone have any positive or negative experiences with Ubuntu studio and recording their own music? I would love to hear!

Honestly, Ubuntu studio is just Ubuntu with some additional software installed, I personally use Manjaro with a lightweight DE on my A1278.

No that's not a good idea. Install it inside virtualbox or vmware first. If you end up using it more than OSX only then should you consider a bare metal install.

The first step isn't to change the OS but the tools you use to produce music. If you jump from ship to other you gonna probably fail or have enough troubles to fuarrrk your productivity. >>17058 >virtualbox This is a good option to basic tests but not to daily use. But, maybe the OP doesn't have maybe options because is using a MacOS.

>>17062 It's such a common thing, idiot hears about this cool Lunix thing, nukes their main OS to install it then realizes it's DIFFERENT and spams every tech forum/board/chatroom he has access to requesting help switching back. Just save everyone the pain and fuarrrking use it in a VM for a few weeks first.

i dont think that the OS is the problem. just change garageband for another software.

So I'm not saying that you can't make music on Linux - it's 2019, there's Reaper and Bitwig and hardware support is better than it used to be but I would still advice against it. Hardware/software support is still inadequate compared to Windows/MacOS, Linux audio model is still completely insane and Linux community is still incredibly hostile so if something doesn't work you're basically on your own.

>macbook >wiping my installation of MacOS Sierra >does this seem like a good idea For you, the answer is no if you think its going to work as intended for music recording. Linux is mainly used in servers and is thus more technical and because of that, reinforces its desirability to be deployed as a server os. It also as many here will tell you is a more secure OS for computers. Which makes people feel safe to soykafpost how they please. Confident that Microsoft isn't wiretapping them and compiling a list of soykafposts to break into their house after someone says nazi things about Bill Gates. And when compatible with the wireless card that lain has makes for a more enjoyable web experience because of the variety of things you can do to the ui. However it is not good for media yet, and it doesn't matter how much money Canonical throws into their projects nothing is changing that in the immediate future. I would dip my toes in the water with Ubuntu but I wouldn't wipe the OS off of it. In fact I'd recommend buying a cheap pc off of craigslist or ebay and test running Ubuntu on that before taking it off of your laptop.

>>17055 Ubuntu studio is bloated as fuarrrk, i think it simply would be overwhelming especially if you are new to linux. Just install a *buntu that looks good to you and search for the programs one at a time. >try on a second HDD or in a VM before wiping your Install
