Decentralized Internetz

Koichiro · 2019-04-13 06:47
There are a lot of anonymous/decentralized internet clients/projects and whatnots. I figured instead of making a thread for each and everyone of them, we could discuss them all on this one thread, give our opinions on them, advice us which ones are the best, ect. Currently these are the ones that have flown into my radar >tor everyone already knows this one! most mainstream way of accessing the deep web https://www.torproject.org/ >i2p second most popular way of using the deep web. the main difference between this and tor is that i2p doesn't have a server host, all the websites are peer-to-peer! https://geti2p.net/en/ >zeronet pretty similar to i2p but easier to navigate https://zeronet.io/ >anonet here's where things start to get pretty weird. I haven't actually used this one, so I don't know what it looks like or how to install it. if you want to try, be my guest http://www.anonet.org/ >openweb network I don't know what to say about this one. It requires you to install a chrome extension (already a big red flag but I guess you could just use chromium instead of google chrome). It seems like you need to pay with etherum in order to host your websites. The idea seems interesting, but I have not been able to find any websites in this deep web https://openweb.network/

>>16646 >tor Is not decentralized, nodes need to coordinate with directory authority servers which are maintained by the Tor project. >the main difference between this and tor is that i2p doesn't have a server host, all the websites are peer-to-peer! This is incorrect. Eepsites are just webservers which accept connections through the i2p network, exactly the same as onion sites. >pretty similar to i2p but easier to navigate Zeronet is not similar to i2p in any way except they are both p2p. Must importantly Zeronet is not anonymous or private whereas i2p is. Please do at least a little bit of research before posting complete garbage.

This is probably at best laterally related to what y'all are talking about, but damn if it isn't pretty interesting: https://hackaday.io/project/164092-npr-new-packet-radio

>>16688 This is one of the coolest implementations I've seen so far. No need for some buttcoin, just file sharing, which is what is important about the internet. The browser, beaker is cool in that it allows you to deploy a website pretty effortlessly. The forking of existing websites should be the source of great creativity. It's still buggy though, but I'm not complaining.

>>16646 Yours truly is working on a decentralization project. Ideally it would fit right in. + fully open/crowd-sourced. Unfortunately people would accuse me of chilli'ing as an IEO awaits.

Here's a dump of all decentralized/federated projects/topics that I've been wanting to research more. I just learned about Tahoe-LAFS yesterday, and now I'm kind of intrigued. > https://tahoe-lafs.readthedocs.io/en/tahoe-lafs-1.12.1/ It seems similar to IPFS, but with a more modest scope, more mature codebase and end-to-end encryption. It has built in redundancy, multiple frontends, support for Tor hidden services and I2P, and the gateway software can function as client and/or server on the same machine, which lets you adjust the network topology between a handful of mirrors and fully peer-to-peer as needed.

Dox · 2019-08-11 00:13
>>18583 Freenet isn't only compromised in that the majority of nodes are feds, and if you control a large enough chunk of the network you can determine who's requesting what. If more people were using it, that would be less of an issue.

I don't know if any of you checked out 08chan on ZeroNet after 8ch lost Cloudflare, but it's a huge disappointment. One person can continuously spam the board, and the "admin" can't do anything about it. I hope one day we can figure out how to have a working decentralized anonymous image board, but right now it seems like a pipe dream.
Trinity · 2019-08-13 06:04
>>18642 Frost over Freenet would be a good alternative. If someone could update the damn thing and add image functionality.
Cutter · 2019-08-13 15:55
>>18594 Not offhand, it's been a number of years since I really looked into any of this. But the idea of the majority of nodes being controlled by a single entity being able to determine traffic flow and where requests come from is one of the bigger issues in this area AFAIK. Freenet's attempt to solve that is the darknet mode, where you only have connections to other people you trust, versus just going online and connecting to anybody, but even then, if that darknet at any point connects to the rest of the net it could potentially be isolated and singled out as the origination point of whatever bad stuff.
RenTec · 2019-08-14 05:28
>>18653 I think the basic rule of thumb is not to use anything US hosted, i2p seems like the best route and my only intention is to browse cool dark web boards and play weird dark web games
