yo lains,
i could get my hands on a pretty cheap thinkstation d20 and wanted to ask you how a 2009 xeon is holding up? would it be a pain in the ass even with 32gb ram and a ssd or can i still get a decent computing experience (mostly programming, brewing soykaf and communicating)?

it's ddr3 up to 96gb (i'd probably try to max that out for the lulz)

it's worth it then i guess? ddr3 will still be relevant i think

as i already stated, i don't do ressource heavy computing and was just worried, that a decade old xeon could struggle with basic usage already. on the other hand, i saw configs within the 4-digit-range on ebay for this machine, so it can't be that bad yet.

I use an HP Z400 workstation. It still gets BIOS updates (for security) and despite consuming too much energy for what it is capable of, it is a very solid machine. ECC RAM is always good to have. Enterprise workstations are cool. Go for it!

Xeons are still holding up pretty good actually, you still do some heavy stuff but nothing too demanding.

About 6 months ago I bought an hp work stations with xeons a gen below the op’s, they hold up extremely well for cpu heavy stuff. They didnt work so great for gaming but I also had dual cpu’s so that could have made it much much worse

OP here, had a talk with the seller and he offered me a unused P300 with 8GB RAM and 1TB SSD for the same price. pick it up next week, looking forward to!

If you can get something ~3ghz then all is good...
Posting from an X3470 packing 16GB Ram SSD and 6GB 1060... VMs all day long - check, 100 tabs web browsing without delays - check, Running Assetto Corsa & Project cars 2 near full grfx (not full AA), without issue (running at gods res of 2560x1600) - check...
And whats more I can do all 3 of these tasks at the same time - with only a little slowdown in games when VMs on...
Can edit 2GB photoshop files no problems, can edit HD in premiere all day long with real-time effects and just a bit less than real-time output rendering...
So what do you need to do thats so demanding?
I also have a 2600k 8GB ram SSD + 1080ti - runs BF5 full grfx smoothly without issue... have not tried on the xeon!
New CPUs are kinda overrated, maybe if you have heavy 4k video rendering and 4k gaming... but thats always a better experience with a bigger grfx card than a bigger cpu!
